Generation of spin squeezing via a fully quantum degenerate parametric amplifier

Spin squeezing is one of the most attractive methods for realizing high-precision metrology. In this paper, we propose a protocol for generating spin squeezing in an atomic ensemble via a fully quantum degenerate parametric amplifier. We discuss the properties of generating spin squeezing with and without driving the pump cavity. Numerical simulation results show that the generated spin squeezing strength is sizable, and is able to be comparable to that obtained using a two-axis twisting (TAT) model. Moreover, we demonstrate that the protocol is experimentally feasible by introducing the corresponding experimental parameters. Therefore, the proposed protocol provides a promising approach to realize spin squeezing in photon-spin coupling systems.

Battery Valuation and Management for Battery Swapping Station with an Intertemporal Framework

Battery swapping as a business model for battery energy storage (BES) has great potential in future integrated low-carbon energy and transportation systems. However, frequent battery swapping will inevitably accelerate battery degradation and shorten the battery life accordingly. To model the tradeoff of BES use between energy and transportation applications coupled by battery swapping, we develop a life-cycle decision model that coordinates battery charging and swapping. This model is derived based on an improved intertemporal decision framework, in which the optimal marginal degradation cost (MDC) of BES is determined to maximize the BES benefit across time and application. The proposed framework and model are applied to manage a battery swapping station that simultaneously provides battery swapping services to electric vehicle customers and provides flexibility service to the power grid, including energy arbitrage and reserve. The case study shows that while the end of the physical life of BES occurs faster with battery swapping, the economic life becomes considerably longer. The results also reveal that the optimal MDC depends on the battery values in each application, and we analyze how the battery swapping price affects the optimal MDC and battery life. The proposed framework and model can also provide decision support for on-demand BES service, such as battery trading, renting and secondary use.

Vid2Avatar: 3D Avatar Reconstruction from Videos in the Wild via Self-supervised Scene Decomposition

We present Vid2Avatar, a method to learn human avatars from monocular in-the-wild videos. Reconstructing humans that move naturally from monocular in-the-wild videos is difficult. Solving it requires accurately separating humans from arbitrary backgrounds. Moreover, it requires reconstructing detailed 3D surface from short video sequences, making it even more challenging. Despite these challenges, our method does not require any groundtruth supervision or priors extracted from large datasets of clothed human scans, nor do we rely on any external segmentation modules. Instead, it solves the tasks of scene decomposition and surface reconstruction directly in 3D by modeling both the human and the background in the scene jointly, parameterized via two separate neural fields. Specifically, we define a temporally consistent human representation in canonical space and formulate a global optimization over the background model, the canonical human shape and texture, and per-frame human pose parameters. A coarse-to-fine sampling strategy for volume rendering and novel objectives are introduced for a clean separation of dynamic human and static background, yielding detailed and robust 3D human geometry reconstructions. We evaluate our methods on publicly available datasets and show improvements over prior art.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence for retrosynthesis

Retrosynthesis is the cornerstone of organic chemistry, providing chemists in material and drug manufacturing access to poorly available and brand-new molecules. Conventional rule-based or expert-based computer-aided synthesis has obvious limitations, such as high labor costs and limited search space. In recent years, dramatic breakthroughs driven by artificial intelligence have revolutionized retrosynthesis. Here we aim to present a comprehensive review of recent advances in AI-based retrosynthesis. For single-step and multi-step retrosynthesis both, we first list their goal and provide a thorough taxonomy of existing methods. Afterwards, we analyze these methods in terms of their mechanism and performance, and introduce popular evaluation metrics for them, in which we also provide a detailed comparison among representative methods on several public datasets. In the next part we introduce popular databases and established platforms for retrosynthesis. Finally, this review concludes with a discussion about promising research directions in this field.

InstantAvatar: Learning Avatars from Monocular Video in 60 Seconds

In this paper, we take a significant step towards real-world applicability of monocular neural avatar reconstruction by contributing InstantAvatar, a system that can reconstruct human avatars from a monocular video within seconds, and these avatars can be animated and rendered at an interactive rate. To achieve this efficiency we propose a carefully designed and engineered system, that leverages emerging acceleration structures for neural fields, in combination with an efficient empty space-skipping strategy for dynamic scenes. We also contribute an efficient implementation that we will make available for research purposes. Compared to existing methods, InstantAvatar converges 130x faster and can be trained in minutes instead of hours. It achieves comparable or even better reconstruction quality and novel pose synthesis results. When given the same time budget, our method significantly outperforms SoTA methods. InstantAvatar can yield acceptable visual quality in as little as 10 seconds training time.

An Effective Methodology for Short-Circuit Calculation of Power Systems Dominated by Power Electronics Converters Considering Unbalanced Voltage Conditions and Converter Limits

This paper deals with the challenge of short-circuit calculation for power systems dominated by power electronics converters. A novel methodology has been presented to identify short-circuit equilibrium point of the studied system considering the operation and limitations of power converters. The studied system has been modeled with an element-based steady-state formulation. In particular, the governing equations implemented on converter control, which involve a specific control mode and various potential current-saturation states, are included. Then, an effective and efficient approach has been proposed to identify the short-circuit equilibrium points that satisfies converters limitations. Numerical case studies with VSCs show that the proposed methodology can identify the short-circuit equilibrium point efficiently and accurately with different types and depths of short-circuit fault. The short-circuit calculation results have been validated with dynamic simulations.

Fast-SNARF: A Fast Deformer for Articulated Neural Fields

Neural fields have revolutionized the area of 3D reconstruction and novel view synthesis of rigid scenes. A key challenge in making such methods applicable to articulated objects, such as the human body, is to model the deformation of 3D locations between the rest pose (a canonical space) and the deformed space. We propose a new articulation module for neural fields, Fast-SNARF, which finds accurate correspondences between canonical space and posed space via iterative root finding. Fast-SNARF is a drop-in replacement in functionality to our previous work, SNARF, while significantly improving its computational efficiency. We contribute several algorithmic and implementation improvements over SNARF, yielding a speed-up of $150\times$. These improvements include voxel-based correspondence search, pre-computing the linear blend skinning function, and an efficient software implementation with CUDA kernels. Fast-SNARF enables efficient and simultaneous optimization of shape and skinning weights given deformed observations without correspondences (e.g. 3D meshes). Because learning of deformation maps is a crucial component in many 3D human avatar methods and since Fast-SNARF provides a computationally efficient solution, we believe that this work represents a significant step towards the practical creation of 3D virtual humans.

Attention Diversification for Domain Generalization

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated gratifying results at learning discriminative features. However, when applied to unseen domains, state-of-the-art models are usually prone to errors due to domain shift. After investigating this issue from the perspective of shortcut learning, we find the devils lie in the fact that models trained on different domains merely bias to different domain-specific features yet overlook diverse task-related features. Under this guidance, a novel Attention Diversification framework is proposed, in which Intra-Model and Inter-Model Attention Diversification Regularization are collaborated to reassign appropriate attention to diverse task-related features. Briefly, Intra-Model Attention Diversification Regularization is equipped on the high-level feature maps to achieve in-channel discrimination and cross-channel diversification via forcing different channels to pay their most salient attention to different spatial locations. Besides, Inter-Model Attention Diversification Regularization is proposed to further provide task-related attention diversification and domain-related attention suppression, which is a paradigm of "simulate, divide and assemble": simulate domain shift via exploiting multiple domain-specific models, divide attention maps into task-related and domain-related groups, and assemble them within each group respectively to execute regularization. Extensive experiments and analyses are conducted on various benchmarks to demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance over other competing methods. Distribution Knowledge Embedding for Graph Pooling

Graph-level representation learning is the pivotal step for downstream tasks that operate on the whole graph. The most common approach to this problem heretofore is graph pooling, where node features are typically averaged or summed to obtain the graph representations. However, pooling operations like averaging or summing inevitably cause massive information missing, which may severely downgrade the final performance. In this paper, we argue what is crucial to graph-level downstream tasks includes not only the topological structure but also the distribution from which nodes are sampled. Therefore, powered by existing Graph Neural Networks (GNN), we propose a new plug-and-play pooling module, termed as Distribution Knowledge Embedding (DKEPool), where graphs are rephrased as distributions on top of GNNs and the pooling goal is to summarize the entire distribution information instead of retaining a certain feature vector by simple predefined pooling operations. A DKEPool network de facto disassembles representation learning into two stages, structure learning and distribution learning. Structure learning follows a recursive neighborhood aggregation scheme to update node features where structure information is obtained. Distribution learning, on the other hand, omits node interconnections and focuses more on the distribution depicted by all the nodes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed DKEPool significantly and consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

A Survey of Neural Trees

Neural networks (NNs) and decision trees (DTs) are both popular models of machine learning, yet coming with mutually exclusive advantages and limitations. To bring the best of the two worlds, a variety of approaches are proposed to integrate NNs and DTs explicitly or implicitly. In this survey, these approaches are organized in a school which we term as neural trees (NTs). This survey aims to present a comprehensive review of NTs and attempts to identify how they enhance the model interpretability. We first propose a thorough taxonomy of NTs that expresses the gradual integration and co-evolution of NNs and DTs. Afterward, we analyze NTs in terms of their interpretability and performance, and suggest possible solutions to the remaining challenges. Finally, this survey concludes with a discussion about other considerations like conditional computation and promising directions towards this field. A list of papers reviewed in this survey, along with their corresponding codes, is available at: https://github.com/zju-vipa/awesome-neural-trees

Root-aligned SMILES: A Tight Representation for Chemical Reaction Prediction

Chemical reaction prediction, involving forward synthesis and retrosynthesis prediction, is a fundamental problem in organic synthesis. A popular computational paradigm formulates synthesis prediction as a sequence-to-sequence translation problem, where the typical SMILES is adopted for molecule representations. However, the general-purpose SMILES neglects the characteristics of chemical reactions, where the molecular graph topology is largely unaltered from reactants to products, resulting in the suboptimal performance of SMILES if straightforwardly applied. In this article, we propose the root-aligned SMILES (R-SMILES), which specifies a tightly aligned one-to-one mapping between the product and the reactant SMILES for more efficient synthesis prediction. Due to the strict one-to-one mapping and reduced edit distance, the computational model is largely relieved from learning the complex syntax and dedicated to learning the chemical knowledge for reactions. We compare the proposed R-SMILES with various state-of-the-art baselines and show that it significantly outperforms them all, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed method.

Federated Selective Aggregation for Knowledge Amalgamation

In this paper, we explore a new knowledge-amalgamation problem, termed Federated Selective Aggregation (FedSA). The goal of FedSA is to train a student model for a new task with the help of several decentralized teachers, whose pre-training tasks and data are different and agnostic. Our motivation for investigating such a problem setup stems from a recent dilemma of model sharing. Many researchers or institutes have spent enormous resources on training large and competent networks. Due to the privacy, security, or intellectual property issues, they are, however, not able to share their own pre-trained models, even if they wish to contribute to the community. The proposed FedSA offers a solution to this dilemma and makes it one step further since, again, the learned student may specialize in a new task different from all of the teachers. To this end, we proposed a dedicated strategy for handling FedSA. Specifically, our student-training process is driven by a novel saliency-based approach that adaptively selects teachers as the participants and integrates their representative capabilities into the student. To evaluate the effectiveness of FedSA, we conduct experiments on both single-task and multi-task settings. Experimental results demonstrate that FedSA effectively amalgamates knowledge from decentralized models and achieves competitive performance to centralized baselines.

Learning with Recoverable Forgetting

Life-long learning aims at learning a sequence of tasks without forgetting the previously acquired knowledge. However, the involved training data may not be life-long legitimate due to privacy or copyright reasons. In practical scenarios, for instance, the model owner may wish to enable or disable the knowledge of specific tasks or specific samples from time to time. Such flexible control over knowledge transfer, unfortunately, has been largely overlooked in previous incremental or decremental learning methods, even at a problem-setup level. In this paper, we explore a novel learning scheme, termed as Learning wIth Recoverable Forgetting (LIRF), that explicitly handles the task- or sample-specific knowledge removal and recovery. Specifically, LIRF brings in two innovative schemes, namely knowledge deposit and withdrawal, which allow for isolating user-designated knowledge from a pre-trained network and injecting it back when necessary. During the knowledge deposit process, the specified knowledge is extracted from the target network and stored in a deposit module, while the insensitive or general knowledge of the target network is preserved and further augmented. During knowledge withdrawal, the taken-off knowledge is added back to the target network. The deposit and withdraw processes only demand for a few epochs of finetuning on the removal data, ensuring both data and time efficiency. We conduct experiments on several datasets, and demonstrate that the proposed LIRF strategy yields encouraging results with gratifying generalization capability.

Label Matching Semi-Supervised Object Detection

Semi-supervised object detection has made significant progress with the development of mean teacher driven self-training. Despite the promising results, the label mismatch problem is not yet fully explored in the previous works, leading to severe confirmation bias during self-training. In this paper, we delve into this problem and propose a simple yet effective LabelMatch framework from two different yet complementary perspectives, i.e., distribution-level and instance-level. For the former one, it is reasonable to approximate the class distribution of the unlabeled data from that of the labeled data according to Monte Carlo Sampling. Guided by this weakly supervision cue, we introduce a re-distribution mean teacher, which leverages adaptive label-distribution-aware confidence thresholds to generate unbiased pseudo labels to drive student learning. For the latter one, there exists an overlooked label assignment ambiguity problem across teacher-student models. To remedy this issue, we present a novel label assignment mechanism for self-training framework, namely proposal self-assignment, which injects the proposals from student into teacher and generates accurate pseudo labels to match each proposal in the student model accordingly. Experiments on both MS-COCO and PASCAL-VOC datasets demonstrate the considerable superiority of our proposed framework to other state-of-the-arts. Slimmable Domain Adaptation

Vanilla unsupervised domain adaptation methods tend to optimize the model with fixed neural architecture, which is not very practical in real-world scenarios since the target data is usually processed by different resource-limited devices. It is therefore of great necessity to facilitate architecture adaptation across various devices. In this paper, we introduce a simple framework, Slimmable Domain Adaptation, to improve cross-domain generalization with a weight-sharing model bank, from which models of different capacities can be sampled to accommodate different accuracy-efficiency trade-offs. The main challenge in this framework lies in simultaneously boosting the adaptation performance of numerous models in the model bank. To tackle this problem, we develop a Stochastic EnsEmble Distillation method to fully exploit the complementary knowledge in the model bank for inter-model interaction. Nevertheless, considering the optimization conflict between inter-model interaction and intra-model adaptation, we augment the existing bi-classifier domain confusion architecture into an Optimization-Separated Tri-Classifier counterpart. After optimizing the model bank, architecture adaptation is leveraged via our proposed Unsupervised Performance Evaluation Metric. Under various resource constraints, our framework surpasses other competing approaches by a very large margin on multiple benchmarks. It is also worth emphasizing that our framework can preserve the performance improvement against the source-only model even when the computing complexity is reduced to $1/64$. Code will be available at https://github.com/hikvision-research/SlimDA.

Learning Domain Adaptive Object Detection with Probabilistic Teacher

Self-training for unsupervised domain adaptive object detection is a challenging task, of which the performance depends heavily on the quality of pseudo boxes. Despite the promising results, prior works have largely overlooked the uncertainty of pseudo boxes during self-training. In this paper, we present a simple yet effective framework, termed as Probabilistic Teacher (PT), which aims to capture the uncertainty of unlabeled target data from a gradually evolving teacher and guides the learning of a student in a mutually beneficial manner. Specifically, we propose to leverage the uncertainty-guided consistency training to promote classification adaptation and localization adaptation, rather than filtering pseudo boxes via an elaborate confidence threshold. In addition, we conduct anchor adaptation in parallel with localization adaptation, since anchor can be regarded as a learnable parameter. Together with this framework, we also present a novel Entropy Focal Loss (EFL) to further facilitate the uncertainty-guided self-training. Equipped with EFL, PT outperforms all previous baselines by a large margin and achieve new state-of-the-arts.

Functional acoustic metamaterial using shortcut to adiabatic passage in acoustic waveguide couplers

Shortcut to adiabatic passage (STAP), initially proposed to accelerate adiabatic quantum state transfer, has been widely explored and applied in quantum optics and integrated optics. Here we bring STAP into the field of acoustics to design compact couplers and functional metamaterial. The space-varying coupling strengths of acoustic waveguides (WGs) are tailored by means of dressed states in a three-level system, accounting for the desirable acoustic energy transfer among three WGs with short length. We show that the acoustic coupler has one-way feature when loss is introduced into the intermediate WG. More uniquely, when the propagation of acoustic wave is designed to mimic a Hadamard transformation, an acoustic metamaterial can be constructed by arraying several couplers, possessing the beam-splitting function and unidirectional, broadband performances. Our work bridges STAP and the acoustic coupler as well as metamaterial, which may have profound impacts on exploring quantum technologies for promoting advanced acoustic devices.

Distribution-Aware Graph Representation Learning for Transient Stability Assessment of Power System

The real-time transient stability assessment (TSA) plays a critical role in the secure operation of the power system. Although the classic numerical integration method, \textit{i.e.} time-domain simulation (TDS), has been widely used in industry practice, it is inevitably trapped in a high computational complexity due to the high latitude sophistication of the power system. In this work, a data-driven power system estimation method is proposed to quickly predict the stability of the power system before TDS reaches the end of simulating time windows, which can reduce the average simulation time of stability assessment without loss of accuracy. As the topology of the power system is in the form of graph structure, graph neural network based representation learning is naturally suitable for learning the status of the power system. Motivated by observing the distribution information of crucial active power and reactive power on the power system's bus nodes, we thus propose a distribution-aware learning~(DAL) module to explore an informative graph representation vector for describing the status of a power system. Then, TSA is re-defined as a binary classification task, and the stability of the system is determined directly from the resulting graph representation without numerical integration. Finally, we apply our method to the online TSA task. The case studies on the IEEE 39-bus system and Polish 2383-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
