Screening maps of the local Universe I -- Methodology

We introduce the LOCal Universe Screening Test Suite (LOCUSTS) project, an effort to create 'screening maps' in the nearby Universe to identify regions in our neighbourhood which are screened, i.e., regions where deviations from General Relativity (GR) are suppressed, in various modified gravity (MG) models. In these models, deviations from the GR force law are often stronger for smaller astrophysical objects, making them ideal test beds of gravity in the local Universe. However, the actual behaviour of the modified gravity force also depends on the environment of the objects, and to make accurate predictions one has to take the latter into account. This can be done approximately using luminous objects in the local Universe as tracers of the underlying dark matter field. Here, we propose a new approach that takes advantage of state-of-the-art Bayesian reconstruction of the mass distribution in the Universe, which allows us to solve the modified gravity equations and predict the screening effect more accurately. This is the first of a series of works, in which we present our methodology and some qualitative results of screening for a specific MG model, $f(R)$ gravity. Applications to test models using observations and extensions to other classes of models will be studied in future works.

Generating an Overview Report over Many Documents

How to efficiently generate an accurate, well-structured overview report (ORPT) over thousands of related documents is challenging. A well-structured ORPT consists of sections of multiple levels (e.g., sections and subsections). None of the existing multi-document summarization (MDS) algorithms is directed toward this task. To overcome this obstacle, we present NDORGS (Numerous Documents' Overview Report Generation Scheme) that integrates text filtering, keyword scoring, single-document summarization (SDS), topic modeling, MDS, and title generation to generate a coherent, well-structured ORPT. We then devise a multi-criteria evaluation method using techniques of text mining and multi-attribute decision making on a combination of human judgments, running time, information coverage, and topic diversity. We evaluate ORPTs generated by NDORGS on two large corpora of documents, where one is classified and the other unclassified. We show that, using Saaty's pairwise comparison 9-point scale and under TOPSIS, the ORPTs generated on SDS's with the length of 20% of the original documents are the best overall on both datasets.

Existence of non-Cayley Haar graphs

A Cayley graph of a group $H$ is a finite simple graph $Γ$ such that its automorphism group ${\rm Aut}(Γ)$ contains a subgroup isomorphic to $H$ acting regularly on $V(Γ)$, while a Haar graph of $H$ is a finite simple bipartite graph $Σ$ such that ${\rm Aut}(Σ)$ contains a subgroup isomorphic to $H$ acting semiregularly on $V(Σ)$ and the $H$-orbits are equal to the partite sets of $Σ$. It is well-known that every Haar graph of finite abelian groups is a Cayley graph. In this paper, we prove that every finite non-abelian group admits a non-Cayley Haar graph except the dihedral groups $D_6$, $D_8$, $D_{10}$, the quaternion group $Q_8$ and the group $Q_8\times\mathbb{Z}_2$. This answers an open problem proposed by Estélyi and Pisanski in 2016.

Real-time observation of single atoms trapped and interfaced to a nanofiber cavity

We demonstrate an optical tweezer based single atom trapping on an optical nanofiber cavity. We show that the fluorescence of single atoms trapped on the nanofiber cavity can be readily observed in real-time through the fiber guided modes. The photon correlation measurements further clarify the atom number and the dynamics of the trap. The trap lifetime is measured to be 52$\pm$5 ms. From the photon statistics measured for different cavity decay rates, the effective coupling rate of the atom-cavity interface is estimated to be 34$\pm$2 MHz. This yields a cooperativity of 5.4$\pm$0.6 and a cavity enhanced channeling efficiency of 85$\pm$2% for a cavity mode having a linewidth of 164 MHz. These results may open new possibilities for building trapped single atom based quantum interfaces on an all-fiber platform.

Analyzing Linguistic Complexity and Scientific Impact

The number of publications and the number of citations received have become the most common indicators of scholarly success. In this context, scientific writing increasingly plays an important role in scholars' scientific careers. To understand the relationship between scientific writing and scientific impact, this paper selected 12 variables of linguistic complexity as a proxy for depicting scientific writing. We then analyzed these features from 36,400 full-text Biology articles and 1,797 full-text Psychology articles. These features were compared to the scientific impact of articles, grouped into high, medium, and low categories. The results suggested no practical significant relationship between linguistic complexity and citation strata in either discipline. This suggests that textual complexity plays little role in scientific impact in our data sets.

Dark-matter-deficient galaxies in hydrodynamical simulations

Low mass galaxies are expected to be dark matter dominated even within their centrals. Recently two observations reported two dwarf galaxies in group environment with very little dark matter in their centrals. We explore the population and origins of dark-matter-deficient galaxies (DMDGs) in two state-of-the-art hydrodynamical simulations, the EAGLE and Illustris projects. For all satellite galaxies with $10^9 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, we find that about $2.6\%$ of them in the EAGLE, and $1.5\%$ in the Illustris are DMDGs with dark matter fractions below $50\%$ inside two times half-stellar-mass radii. We demonstrate that DMDGs are highly tidal disrupted galaxies; and because dark matter has higher binding energy than stars, mass loss of the dark matter is much more rapid than stars in DMDGs during tidal interactions. If DMDGs were confirmed in observations, they are expected in current galaxy formation models.

Scaling Up Sparse Support Vector Machines by Simultaneous Feature and Sample Reduction

Sparse support vector machine (SVM) is a popular classification technique that can simultaneously learn a small set of the most interpretable features and identify the support vectors. It has achieved great successes in many real-world applications. However, for large-scale problems involving a huge number of samples and ultra-high dimensional features, solving sparse SVMs remains challenging. By noting that sparse SVMs induce sparsities in both feature and sample spaces, we propose a novel approach, which is based on accurate estimations of the primal and dual optima of sparse SVMs, to simultaneously identify the inactive features and samples that are guaranteed to be irrelevant to the outputs. Thus, we can remove the identified inactive samples and features from the training phase, leading to substantial savings in the computational cost without sacrificing the accuracy. Moreover, we show that our method can be extended to multi-class sparse support vector machines. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed method is the \emph{first} \emph{static} feature and sample reduction method for sparse SVMs and multi-class sparse SVMs. Experiments on both synthetic and real data sets demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods and the speedup gained by our approach can be orders of magnitude.

Dirac Fermion Hierarchy of Composite Fermi Liquids

Composite Fermi liquids (CFLs) are compressible states that can occur for 2D interacting fermions confined in the lowest Landau level at certain Landau level fillings. They have been understood as Fermi seas formed by composite fermions which are bound states of electromagnetic fluxes and electrons as reported by Halperin, Lee and Read [Phys. Rev. B 47, 7312 (1993)]. At half filling, an explicitly particle-hole symmetric theory based on Dirac fermions was proposed by Son [Phys. Rev. X 5, 031027 (2015)] as an alternative low energy description. In this work, we investigate the Berry curvature of CFL model wave functions at a filling fraction one-quarter, and observe that it is uniformly distributed over the Fermi sea except at the center where an additional $π$ phase was found. Motivated by this, we propose an effective theory which generalizes Son's half filling theory, by internal gauge flux attachment, to all filling fractions in which fermionic CFLs can occur. The numerical results support the idea of internal gauge flux attachment.

Cross-Platform Modeling of Users' Behavior on Social Media

With the booming development and popularity of mobile applications, different verticals accumulate abundant data of user information and social behavior, which are spontaneous, genuine and diversified. However, each platform describes user's portraits in only certain aspect, resulting in difficult combination of those internet footprints together. In our research, we proposed a modeling approach to analyze user's online behavior across different social media platforms. Structured and unstructured data of same users shared by NetEase Music and Sina Weibo have been collected for cross-platform analysis of correlations between music preference and other users' characteristics. Based on music tags of genre and mood, genre cluster of five groups and mood cluster of four groups have been formed by computing their collected song lists with K-means method. Moreover, with the help of user data of Weibo, correlations between music preference (i.e. genre, mood) and Big Five personalities (BFPs) and basic information (e.g. gender, resident region, tags) have been comprehensively studied, building up full-scale user portraits with finer grain. Our findings indicate that people's music preference could be linked with their real social activities. For instance, people living in mountainous areas generally prefer folk music, while those in urban areas like pop music more. Interestingly, dog lovers could love sad music more than cat lovers. Moreover, our proposed cross-platform modeling approach could be adapted to other verticals, providing an online automatic way for profiling users in a more precise and comprehensive way.

Deep learning based mood tagging for Chinese song lyrics

Nowadays, listening music has been and will always be an indispensable part of our daily life. In recent years, sentiment analysis of music has been widely used in the information retrieval systems, personalized recommendation systems and so on. Due to the development of deep learning, this paper commits to find an effective approach for mood tagging of Chinese song lyrics. To achieve this goal, both machine-learning and deep-learning models have been studied and compared. Eventually, a CNN-based model with pre-trained word embedding has been demonstrated to effectively extract the distribution of emotional features of Chinese lyrics, with at least 15 percentage points higher than traditional machine-learning methods (i.e. TF-IDF+SVM and LIWC+SVM), and 7 percentage points higher than other deep-learning models (i.e. RNN, LSTM). In this paper, more than 160,000 lyrics corpus has been leveraged for pre-training word embedding for mood tagging boost.

A Hierarchical Attention Based Seq2seq Model for Chinese Lyrics Generation

In this paper, we comprehensively study on context-aware generation of Chinese song lyrics. Conventional text generative models generate a sequence or sentence word by word, failing to consider the contextual relationship between sentences. Taking account into the characteristics of lyrics, a hierarchical attention based Seq2Seq (Sequence-to-Sequence) model is proposed for Chinese lyrics generation. With encoding of word-level and sentence-level contextual information, this model promotes the topic relevance and consistency of generation. A large Chinese lyrics corpus is also leveraged for model training. Eventually, results of automatic and human evaluations demonstrate that our model is able to compose complete Chinese lyrics with one united topic constraint.

Automatic Acrostic Couplet Generation with Three-Stage Neural Network Pipelines

As one of the quintessence of Chinese traditional culture, couplet compromises two syntactically symmetric clauses equal in length, namely, an antecedent and subsequent clause. Moreover, corresponding characters and phrases at the same position of the two clauses are paired with each other under certain constraints of semantic and/or syntactic relatedness. Automatic couplet generation is recognized as a challenging problem even in the Artificial Intelligence field. In this paper, we comprehensively study on automatic generation of acrostic couplet with the first characters defined by users. The complete couplet generation is mainly divided into three stages, that is, antecedent clause generation pipeline, subsequent clause generation pipeline and clause re-ranker. To realize semantic and/or syntactic relatedness between two clauses, attention-based Sequence-to-Sequence (S2S) neural network is employed. Moreover, to provide diverse couplet candidates for re-ranking, a cluster-based beam search approach is incorporated into the S2S network. Both BLEU metrics and human judgments have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method. Eventually, a mini-program based on this generation system is developed and deployed on Wechat for real users.

A Syllable-Structured, Contextually-Based Conditionally Generation of Chinese Lyrics

This paper presents a novel, syllable-structured Chinese lyrics generation model given a piece of original melody. Most previously reported lyrics generation models fail to include the relationship between lyrics and melody. In this work, we propose to interpret lyrics-melody alignments as syllable structural information and use a multi-channel sequence-to-sequence model with considering both phrasal structures and semantics. Two different RNN encoders are applied, one of which is for encoding syllable structures while the other for semantic encoding with contextual sentences or input keywords. Moreover, a large Chinese lyrics corpus for model training is leveraged. With automatic and human evaluations, results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed lyrics generation model. To the best of our knowledge, there is few previous reports on lyrics generation considering both music and linguistic perspectives.

Audio-Based Music Classification with DenseNet And Data Augmentation

In recent years, deep learning technique has received intense attention owing to its great success in image recognition. A tendency of adaption of deep learning in various information processing fields has formed, including music information retrieval (MIR). In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study on music audio classification with improved convolutional neural networks (CNNs). To the best of our knowledge, this the first work to apply Densely Connected Convolutional Networks (DenseNet) to music audio tagging, which has been demonstrated to perform better than Residual neural network (ResNet). Additionally, two specific data augmentation approaches of time overlapping and pitch shifting have been proposed to address the deficiency of labelled data in the MIR. Moreover, an ensemble learning of stacking is employed based on SVM. We believe that the proposed combination of strong representation of DenseNet and data augmentation can be adapted to other audio processing tasks.

Automatic Conditional Generation of Personalized Social Media Short Texts

Automatic text generation has received much attention owing to rapid development of deep neural networks. In general, text generation systems based on statistical language model will not consider anthropomorphic characteristics, which results in machine-like generated texts. To fill the gap, we propose a conditional language generation model with Big Five Personality (BFP) feature vectors as input context, which writes human-like short texts. The short text generator consists of a layer of long short memory network (LSTM), where a BFP feature vector is concatenated as one part of input for each cell. To enable supervised training generation model, a text classification model based convolution neural network (CNN) has been used to prepare BFP-tagged Chinese micro-blog corpora. Validated by a BFP linguistic computational model, our generated Chinese short texts exhibit discriminative personality styles, which are also syntactically correct and semantically smooth with appropriate emoticons. With combination of natural language generation with psychological linguistics, our proposed BFP-dependent text generation model can be widely used for individualization in machine translation, image caption, dialogue generation and so on.

Modeling of User Portrait Through Social Media

Nowadays, massive useful data of user information and social behavior have been accumulated on the Internet, providing a possibility of profiling user's personality traits online. In this paper, we propose a psychological modeling method based on computational linguistic features to profile Big Five personality traits of users on Sina Weibo (a Twitter-like microblogging service in China) and their correlations with user's social behaviors. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first research on investigating the potential relationship between profile information, social-network behaviors and personality traits of users on Sina Weibo. Our results demonstrate an effective modeling approach to understanding demographic and psychological portraits of users on social media without customer disruption, which is useful for commercial incorporations to provide better personalized products and services.

Bistability of Sequestration Networks

We solve a conjecture on multiple nondegenerate steady states, and prove bistability for sequestration networks. More specifically, we prove that for any odd number of species, and for any production factor, the fully open extension of a sequestration network admits three nondegenerate positive steady states, two of which are locally asymptotically stable. In addition, we provide a non-empty open set in the parameter space where a sequestration network admits bistability.

A Lotka-Volterra competition model with nonlocal diffusion and free boundaries

This paper is concerned with a nonlocal diffusion Lotka-Volterra type competition model that consisting of a native species and an invasive species in a one-dimensional habitat with free boundaries. We prove the well-posedness of the system and get a spreading-vanishing dichotomy for the invasive species. We also provide some sufficient conditions to ensure spreading success or spreading failure for the case that the invasive species is an inferior competitor or a superior competitor, respectively.
