Near-Field Communication with Massive Movable Antennas: A Functional Perspective

The advent of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology has provided new opportunities for capacity improvement via strategic antenna deployment, especially when the near-field effect is pronounced due to antenna proliferation. In this paper, we investigate the optimal antenna placement for maximizing the achievable rate of a point-to-point near-field channel, where the transmitter is deployed with massive movable antennas. First, we propose a novel design framework to explore the relationship between antenna positions and achievable data rate. By introducing the continuous antenna position function (APF) and antenna density function (ADF), we reformulate the antenna position design problem from the discrete to the continuous domain, which maximizes the achievable rate functional with respect to ADF. Leveraging functional analysis and variational methods, we derive the optimal ADF condition and propose a gradient-based algorithm for numerical solutions under general channel conditions. Furthermore, for the near-field line-of-sight (LoS) scenario, we present a closed-form solution for the optimal ADF, revealing the critical role of edge antenna density in enhancing the achievable rate. Finally, we propose a flexible antenna array-based deployment method that ensures practical implementation while mitigating mutual coupling issues. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, with uniform circular arrays emerging as a promising geometry for balancing performance and deployment feasibility in near-field communications.

Active IRS-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communications with Extended Targets

This paper studies the active intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC), in which an active IRS is deployed to assist the base station (BS) in serving multiple communication users (CUs) and simultaneously sensing an \emph{extended} target at the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) area of the BS. The active IRS has the capability of amplifying the reflected signals so as to overcome significant reflection path loss in NLoS communication and sensing. In particular, we derive the sensing Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) for estimating the target response matrix. Accordingly, we jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and the reflective beamforming at the active IRS to minimize the sensing CRB, subject to the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirements at the CUs, the transmit power budgets at the BS and active IRS, as well as the power amplification gain constraints at the active IRS. The CRB minimization problem is highly non-convex and thus difficult to solve in general. To address this challenge, we first focus on two specified conditions by considering the sensing-only scenario via ignoring the SINR constraints for communications, for which the closed-form optimal transmit beamforming is derived. Then, we propose two efficient alternating optimization (AO)-based algorithms to obtain high-quality solutions for the general ISAC scenarios. Next, we analyze the inherent relationship between the power scaling at the BS and the amplification scaling at the active IRS. It is shown that the active IRS always amplifies the signal using the maximum amplification gain under practical system settings. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed AO-based algorithms and the benefits of active IRS-enabled ISAC compared to its passive IRSs counterparts.

CRB-Rate Tradeoff for Bistatic ISAC with Gaussian Information and Deterministic Sensing Signals

In this paper, we investigate a bistatic integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, consisting of a multi-antenna base station (BS), a multi-antenna sensing receiver, a single-antenna communication user (CU), and a point target to be sensed. Specifically, the BS transmits a superposition of Gaussian information and deterministic sensing signals. The BS aims to deliver information symbols to the CU, while the sensing receiver aims to estimate the target's direction-of-arrival (DoA) with respect to the sensing receiver by processing the echo signals. For the sensing receiver, we assume that only the sequences of the deterministic sensing signals and the covariance matrix of the information signals are perfectly known, whereas the specific realizations of the information signals remain unavailable. Under this setup, we first derive the corresponding Cramér-Rao bounds (CRBs) for DoA estimation and propose practical estimators to accurately estimate the target's DoA. Subsequently, we formulate the transmit beamforming design as an optimization problem aiming to minimize the CRB, subject to a minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement at the CU and a maximum transmit power constraint at the BS. When the BS employs only Gaussian information signals, the resulting beamforming optimization problem is convex, enabling the derivation of an optimal solution. In contrast, when both Gaussian information and deterministic sensing signals are transmitted, the resulting problem is non-convex and a locally optimal solution is acquired by exploiting successive convex approximation (SCA). Finally, numerical results demonstrate that employing Gaussian information signals leads to a notable performance degradation for target sensing and the proposed transmit beamforming design achieves a superior ISAC performance boundary compared with various benchmark schemes.

Comprehensive Investigation of Fundamental Mode Profiles in Monolithic Nonplanar Ring Oscillators

Nonplanar ring oscillators (NPROs) are building blocks for high-performance single-frequency lasers and ring-laser gyroscopes that have profoundly improved the state-of-the-art laser technologies, fundamental research and precision measurements. However, a comprehensive investigation of fundamental mode profiles in monolithic NPROs has been a missing part even though they will affect the performance of the lasers or ring-laser gyroscopes. Here, we present a comprehensive finite-element modeling of the output beam profiles of monolithic NPROs by combining ABCD transmission matrix and generalized Huygens-Fresnel integral. We theoretically investigate the effects of geometric parameters of monolithic NPROs on their output mode profiles. In particular, we focus on the thermal effect inside the monolithic NPRO and calculate the equivalent focal-length of the thermal-lens by using a ray-tracing-method. Furthermore, we experimentally characterize the output laser beam profile, reconstruct the beam profile at the A-facet of the monolithic NPRO, and compare the experimental results with the simulation, thereby validating the accuracy and reliability of our model. The investigation may facilitate monolithic NPRO design and subsequently improve the performances of NPRO lasers and gyroscopes in the future.

Robust Multi-View Learning via Representation Fusion of Sample-Level Attention and Alignment of Simulated Perturbation

Recently, multi-view learning (MVL) has garnered significant attention due to its ability to fuse discriminative information from multiple views. However, real-world multi-view datasets are often heterogeneous and imperfect, which usually causes MVL methods designed for specific combinations of views to lack application potential and limits their effectiveness. To address this issue, we propose a novel robust MVL method (namely RML) with simultaneous representation fusion and alignment. Specifically, we introduce a simple yet effective multi-view transformer fusion network where we transform heterogeneous multi-view data into homogeneous word embeddings, and then integrate multiple views by the sample-level attention mechanism to obtain a fused representation. Furthermore, we propose a simulated perturbation based multi-view contrastive learning framework that dynamically generates the noise and unusable perturbations for simulating imperfect data conditions. The simulated noisy and unusable data obtain two distinct fused representations, and we utilize contrastive learning to align them for learning discriminative and robust representations. Our RML is self-supervised and can also be applied for downstream tasks as a regularization. In experiments, we employ it in multi-view unsupervised clustering, noise-label classification, and as a plug-and-play module for cross-modal hashing retrieval. Extensive comparison experiments and ablation studies validate RML's effectiveness. Code is available at https://github.com/SubmissionsIn/RML.

Latency Minimization Oriented Radio and Computation Resource Allocations for 6G V2X Networks with ISCC

Incorporating mobile edge computing (MEC) and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has emerged as a promising technology to enable integrated sensing, communication, and computing (ISCC) in the sixth generation (6G) networks. ISCC is particularly attractive for vehicle-to-everything (V2X) applications, where vehicles perform ISAC to sense the environment and simultaneously offload the sensing data to roadside base stations (BSs) for remote processing. In this paper, we investigate a particular ISCC-enabled V2X system consisting of multiple multi-antenna BSs serving a set of single-antenna vehicles, in which the vehicles perform their respective ISAC operations (for simultaneous sensing and offloading to the associated BS) over orthogonal sub-bands. With the focus on fairly minimizing the sensing completion latency for vehicles while ensuring the detection probability constraints, we jointly optimize the allocations of radio resources (i.e., the sub-band allocation, transmit power control at vehicles, and receive beamforming at BSs) as well as computation resources at BS MEC servers. To solve the formulated complex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, we propose an alternating optimization algorithm. In this algorithm, we determine the sub-band allocation via the branch-and-bound method, optimize the transmit power control via successive convex approximation (SCA), and derive the receive beamforming and computation resource allocation at BSs in closed form based on generalized Rayleigh entropy and fairness criteria, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed joint resource allocation design significantly reduces the maximum task completion latency among all vehicles. Furthermore, we also demonstrate several interesting trade-offs between the system performance and resource utilizations.

Scalar and Mean Curvature Comparison on Compact Cylinder

Let $ X $ be a closed, oriented Riemannian manifold. Denote by $ (M = X \times I, \partial M = X \times \lbrace 0 \rbrace \cup X \times \lbrace 1 \rbrace, g) $ a compact cylinder with smooth boundary, $ \dim M \geqslant 3 $. In this article, we address the following question: If $ g $ is a Riemannian metric having (i) positive scalar curvature (PSC metric) on $ M $ and nonnegative mean curvature on $ \partial M $; and (ii) the $ g $-angle between normal vector field $ ν_{g} $ along $ \partial M $ and $ \partial_ξ \in Γ(TI) $ being less than $ \fracπ{4} $, then there exists a metric $ \tilde{g} $ on $ M $ such that $ \tilde{g} |_{X \times \lbrace 0 \rbrace} $ is a PSC metric on $ X \cong X \times \lbrace 0 \rbrace $. Equivalently, we show that if $ X $ admits no PSC metric, but $ M $ admits a PSC metric $ g $ satisfying the angle condition, then the mean curvature on $ \partial M $ must be negative somewhere. This generalizes a result of Gromov and Lawson (Ann. of Math. (2), 1980) for $ X = \mathbb{T}^{n} $.

Empowering Intelligent Low-altitude Economy with Large AI Model Deployment

Low-altitude economy (LAE) represents an emerging economic paradigm that redefines commercial and social aerial activities. Large artificial intelligence models (LAIMs) offer transformative potential to further enhance the intelligence of LAE services. However, deploying LAIMs in LAE poses several challenges, including the significant gap between their computational/storage demands and the limited onboard resources of LAE entities, the mismatch between lab-trained LAIMs and dynamic physical environments, and the inefficiencies of traditional decoupled designs for sensing, communication, and computation. To address these issues, we first propose a hierarchical system architecture tailored for LAIM deployment and present representative LAE application scenarios. Next, we explore key enabling techniques that facilitate the mutual co-evolution of LAIMs and low-altitude systems, and introduce a task-oriented execution pipeline for scalable and adaptive service delivery. Then, the proposed framework is validated through real-world case studies. Finally, we outline open challenges to inspire future research.

Frequency-shifted laser feedback interferometry in non-planar ring oscillators

Laser feedback interferometry (LFI) has a wide range of applications such as displacement, distance and velocity measurements. LFI has been realized in many types of lasers but has never been reported in non-planar ring oscillators (NPRO) to the best of our knowledge. Here, we present a new type of LFI based on an NPRO laser. The intrinsic resistance to optical feedback in NPROs is broken under weak magnetic intensity condition, where stable bidirectional lasing is initiated in the ring cavity. The interference signal, i.e., the beat of the bidirectional lasing is with frequency in the range of a few hundred kilohertz, which is mainly determined by the applied magnetic intensity in NPRO. Frequency shifted LFI is thus constructed in NPRO without using acoustic optic modulators as mostly used in conventional LFI. A theoretical model based on two frequency rate equations and Lang-Kobayashi equation is presented to describe the mechanism of LFI in NPRO. In the end, micro-vibrational measurements are demonstrated to prove the potential application, where vibration-detection amplitude limit is sub-picometer, and the detection frequency range from kilohertz to a few hundred kilohertz is achieved. Benefiting from the characteristics of tiny footprint, ruggedized structure, long lifetime and ultralow-noise of NPRO lasers, NPRO-based LFI may find important applications in industry, scientific research, military and aerospace.

Incomplete Multi-view Clustering via Diffusion Contrastive Generation

Incomplete multi-view clustering (IMVC) has garnered increasing attention in recent years due to the common issue of missing data in multi-view datasets. The primary approach to address this challenge involves recovering the missing views before applying conventional multi-view clustering methods. Although imputation-based IMVC methods have achieved significant improvements, they still encounter notable limitations: 1) heavy reliance on paired data for training the data recovery module, which is impractical in real scenarios with high missing data rates; 2) the generated data often lacks diversity and discriminability, resulting in suboptimal clustering results. To address these shortcomings, we propose a novel IMVC method called Diffusion Contrastive Generation (DCG). Motivated by the consistency between the diffusion and clustering processes, DCG learns the distribution characteristics to enhance clustering by applying forward diffusion and reverse denoising processes to intra-view data. By performing contrastive learning on a limited set of paired multi-view samples, DCG can align the generated views with the real views, facilitating accurate recovery of views across arbitrary missing view scenarios. Additionally, DCG integrates instance-level and category-level interactive learning to exploit the consistent and complementary information available in multi-view data, achieving robust and end-to-end clustering. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. The code is available at https://github.com/zhangyuanyang21/2025-AAAI-DCG.

CoIFNet: A Unified Framework for Multivariate Time Series Forecasting with Missing Values

Multivariate time series forecasting (MTSF) is a critical task with broad applications in domains such as meteorology, transportation, and economics. Nevertheless, pervasive missing values caused by sensor failures or human errors significantly degrade forecasting accuracy. Prior efforts usually employ an impute-then-forecast paradigm, leading to suboptimal predictions due to error accumulation and misaligned objectives between the two stages. To address this challenge, we propose the Collaborative Imputation-Forecasting Network (CoIFNet), a novel framework that unifies imputation and forecasting to achieve robust MTSF in the presence of missing values. Specifically, CoIFNet takes the observed values, mask matrix and timestamp embeddings as input, processing them sequentially through the Cross-Timestep Fusion (CTF) and Cross-Variate Fusion (CVF) modules to capture temporal dependencies that are robust to missing values. We provide theoretical justifications on how our CoIFNet learning objective improves the performance bound of MTSF with missing values. Through extensive experiments on challenging MSTF benchmarks, we demonstrate the effectiveness and computational efficiency of our proposed approach across diverse missing-data scenarios, e.g., CoIFNet outperforms the state-of-the-art method by $\underline{\textbf{24.40}}$% ($\underline{\textbf{23.81}}$%) at a point (block) missing rate of 0.6, while improving memory and time efficiency by $\underline{\boldsymbol{4.3\times}}$ and $\underline{\boldsymbol{2.1\times}}$, respectively. Our code is available at: https://github.com/KaiTang-eng/CoIFNet.

UAV-Enabled Secure ISAC Against Dual Eavesdropping Threats: Joint Beamforming and Trajectory Design

In this work, we study an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled secure integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where a UAV serves as an aerial base station (BS) to simultaneously perform communication with a user and detect a target on the ground, while a dual-functional eavesdropper attempts to intercept the signals for both sensing and communication. Facing the dual eavesdropping threats, we aim to enhance the average achievable secrecy rate for the communication user by jointly designing the UAV trajectory together with the transmit information and sensing beamforming, while satisfying the requirements on sensing performance and sensing security, as well as the UAV power and flight constraints. To address the non-convex nature of the optimization problem, we employ the alternating optimization (AO) strategy, jointly with the successive convex approximation (SCA) and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) methods. Numerical results validate the proposed approach, demonstrating its ability to achieve a high secrecy rate while meeting the required sensing and security constraints.

Multimodal Federated Learning: A Survey through the Lens of Different FL Paradigms

Multimodal Federated Learning (MFL) lies at the intersection of two pivotal research areas: leveraging complementary information from multiple modalities to improve downstream inference performance and enabling distributed training to enhance efficiency and preserve privacy. Despite the growing interest in MFL, there is currently no comprehensive taxonomy that organizes MFL through the lens of different Federated Learning (FL) paradigms. This perspective is important because multimodal data introduces distinct challenges across various FL settings. These challenges, including modality heterogeneity, privacy heterogeneity, and communication inefficiency, are fundamentally different from those encountered in traditional unimodal or non-FL scenarios. In this paper, we systematically examine MFL within the context of three major FL paradigms: horizontal FL (HFL), vertical FL (VFL), and hybrid FL. For each paradigm, we present the problem formulation, review representative training algorithms, and highlight the most prominent challenge introduced by multimodal data in distributed settings. We also discuss open challenges and provide insights for future research. By establishing this taxonomy, we aim to uncover the novel challenges posed by multimodal data from the perspective of different FL paradigms and to offer a new lens through which to understand and advance the development of MFL.

Multiple truly topological unidirectional surface magnetoplasmons at terahertz frequencies

Unidirectional propagation based on surface magnetoplasmons (SMPs) has recently been realized at the interface of magnetized semiconductors. However, usually SMPs lose their unidirectionality due to non-local effects, especially in the lower trivial bandgap of such structures. More recently, a truly unidirectional SMP (USMP) has been demonstrated in the upper topological non-trivial bandgap, but it supports only a single USMP, limiting its functionality. In this work, we present a fundamental physical model for multiple, robust, truly topological USMP modes at terahertz (THz) frequencies, realized in a semiconductor-dielectric-semiconductor (SDS) slab waveguide under opposing external magnetic fields. We analytically derive the dispersion properties of the SMPs and perform numerical analysis in both local and non-local models. Our results show that the SDS waveguide supports two truly (even and odd) USMP modes in the upper topological non-trivial bandgap. Exploiting these two modes, we demonstrate unidirectional SMP multimode interference (USMMI), being highly robust and immune to backscattering, overcoming the back-reflection issue in conventional bidirectional waveguides. To demonstrate the usefullness of this approach, we numerically realize a frequency- and magnetically-tunable arbitrary-ratio splitter based on this robust USMMI, enabling multimode conversion. We, further, identify a unique index-near-zero (INZ) odd USMP mode in the SDS waveguide, distinct from conventional semiconductor-dielectric-metal waveguides. Leveraging this INZ mode, we achieve phase modulation with a phase shift from -$π$ to $π$. Our work expands the manipulation of topological waves and enriches the field of truly non-reciprocal topological physics for practical device applications.

Robust Secure Communications in Near-Field ISCAP Systems with Extremely Large-Scale Antenna Array

This paper investigates robust secure communications in a near-field integrated sensing, communication, and powering (ISCAP) system, in which the base station (BS) is equipped with an extremely large-scale antenna array (ELAA). In this system, the BS transmits confidential messages to a single legitimate communication user (CU), simultaneously providing wireless power transfer to multiple energy receivers (ERs) and performing point target sensing. We consider a scenario in which both the ERs and the sensing target may act as potential eavesdroppers attempting to intercept the confidential messages. To safeguard secure communication, the BS employs a joint beamforming design by transmitting information beams combined with dedicated triple-purpose beams serving as energy and sensing signals, as well as artificial noise (AN) for effectively jamming potential eavesdroppers. It is assumed that only coarse location information of the ERs and sensing targets or eavesdroppers is available at the BS, leading to imperfect channel state information (CSI). Under this setup, we formulate a robust beamforming optimization problem with the objective of maximizing the secrecy rate for the CU, while ensuring worst-case performance requirements on both target sensing and wireless energy harvesting at the ERs. To address the non-convex robust joint beamforming problem and facilitate the deployment of a low-complexity algorithm, we employ the S-procedure alongside an eavesdropping CSI error-bound determination method to acquire a high-quality solution.

Sensing-Enhanced Channel Estimation for Near-Field XL-MIMO Systems

Future sixth-generation (6G) systems are expected to leverage extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) technology, which significantly expands the range of the near-field region. The spherical wavefront characteristics in the near field introduce additional degrees of freedom (DoFs), namely distance and angle, into the channel model, which leads to unique challenges in channel estimation (CE). In this paper, we propose a new sensing-enhanced uplink CE scheme for near-field XL-MIMO, which notably reduces the required quantity of baseband samples and the dictionary size. In particular, we first propose a sensing method that can be accomplished in a single time slot. It employs power sensors embedded within the antenna elements to measure the received power pattern rather than baseband samples. A time inversion algorithm is then proposed to precisely estimate the locations of users and scatterers, which offers a substantially lower computational complexity. Based on the estimated locations from sensing, a novel dictionary is then proposed by considering the eigen-problem based on the near-field transmission model, which facilitates efficient near-field CE with less baseband sampling and a more lightweight dictionary. Moreover, we derive the general form of the eigenvectors associated with the near-field channel matrix, revealing their noteworthy connection to the discrete prolate spheroidal sequence (DPSS). Simulation results unveil that the proposed time inversion algorithm achieves accurate localization with power measurements only, and remarkably outperforms various widely-adopted algorithms in terms of computational complexity. Furthermore, the proposed eigen-dictionary considerably improves the accuracy in CE with a compact dictionary size and a drastic reduction in baseband samples by up to 66%.

Sensing-Assisted Channel Prediction in Complex Wireless Environments: An LLM-Based Approach

This letter studies the sensing-assisted channel prediction for a multi-antenna orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system operating in realistic and complex wireless environments. In this system,an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) transmitter leverages the mono-static sensing capability to facilitate the prediction of its bi-static communication channel, by exploiting the fact that the sensing and communication channels share the same physical environment involving shared scatterers. Specifically, we propose a novel large language model (LLM)-based channel prediction approach, which adapts pre-trained text-based LLM to handle the complex-matrix-form channel state information (CSI) data. This approach utilizes the LLM's strong ability to capture the intricate spatiotemporal relationships between the multi-path sensing and communication channels, and thus efficiently predicts upcoming communication CSI based on historical communication and sensing CSI data. Experimental results show that the proposed LLM-based approach significantly outperforms conventional deep learning-based methods and the benchmark scheme without sensing assistance.

The Larger the Merrier? Efficient Large AI Model Inference in Wireless Edge Networks

The growing demand for large artificial intelligence model (LAIM) services is driving a paradigm shift from traditional cloud-based inference to edge-based inference for low-latency, privacy-preserving applications. In particular, edge-device co-inference, which partitions LAIMs between edge devices and servers, has emerged as a promising strategy for resource-efficient LAIM execution in wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate a pruning-aware LAIM co-inference scheme, where a pre-trained LAIM is pruned and partitioned into on-device and on-server sub-models for deployment. For analysis, we first prove that the LAIM output distortion is upper bounded by its parameter distortion. Then, we derive a lower bound on parameter distortion via rate-distortion theory, analytically capturing the relationship between pruning ratio and co-inference performance. Next, based on the analytical results, we formulate an LAIM co-inference distortion bound minimization problem by jointly optimizing the pruning ratio, transmit power, and computation frequency under system latency, energy, and available resource constraints. Moreover, we propose an efficient algorithm to tackle the considered highly non-convex problem. Finally, extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design. In particular, model parameter distortion is shown to provide a reliable bound on output distortion. Also, the proposed joint pruning ratio and resource management design achieves superior performance in balancing trade-offs among inference performance, system latency, and energy consumption compared with benchmark schemes, such as fully on-device and on-server inference. Moreover, the split point is shown to play a critical role in system performance optimization under heterogeneous and resource-limited edge environments.
