Towards Unified Interactive Visual Grounding in The Wild

Interactive visual grounding in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is challenging yet practical due to the inevitable ambiguity in natural languages. It requires robots to disambiguate the user input by active information gathering. Previous approaches often rely on predefined templates to ask disambiguation questions, resulting in performance reduction in realistic interactive scenarios. In this paper, we propose TiO, an end-to-end system for interactive visual grounding in human-robot interaction. Benefiting from a unified formulation of visual dialogue and grounding, our method can be trained on a joint of extensive public data, and show superior generality to diversified and challenging open-world scenarios. In the experiments, we validate TiO on GuessWhat?! and InViG benchmarks, setting new state-of-the-art performance by a clear margin. Moreover, we conduct HRI experiments on the carefully selected 150 challenging scenes as well as real-robot platforms. Results show that our method demonstrates superior generality to diversified visual and language inputs with a high success rate. Codes and demos are available at https://github.com/jxu124/TiO.

Detecting Adversarial Spectrum Attacks via Distance to Decision Boundary Statistics

Machine learning has been adopted for efficient cooperative spectrum sensing. However, it incurs an additional security risk due to attacks leveraging adversarial machine learning to create malicious spectrum sensing values to deceive the fusion center, called adversarial spectrum attacks. In this paper, we propose an efficient framework for detecting adversarial spectrum attacks. Our design leverages the concept of the distance to the decision boundary (DDB) observed at the fusion center and compares the training and testing DDB distributions to identify adversarial spectrum attacks. We create a computationally efficient way to compute the DDB for machine learning based spectrum sensing systems. Experimental results based on realistic spectrum data show that our method, under typical settings, achieves a high detection rate of up to 99\% and maintains a low false alarm rate of less than 1\%. In addition, our method to compute the DDB based on spectrum data achieves 54\%--64\% improvements in computational efficiency over existing distance calculation methods. The proposed DDB-based detection framework offers a practical and efficient solution for identifying malicious sensing values created by adversarial spectrum attacks.

Investigation of double-gyroid grain boundaries beyond twinning

We study four double-gyroid (DG) grain boundaries (GBs) with different orientations numerically using the Landau--Brazovskii free energy, including the (422) twin boundary studied recently, a network switching GB, and two tilt GBs. Topological variations and geometric deformations are investigated. It is found that deviations in strut lengths and dihedral angles from the bulk DG substantially exceed changes in strut angles and nodal coplanarity. We also examine the spectra along the contact plane of two grains and utilize them to evaluate the GB widths. Of the four GBs we study, the network switching GB changes to the least extent topologically and geometrically, meanwhile has the lowest energy and the smallest GB width.

A Tutorial on Environment-Aware Communications via Channel Knowledge Map for 6G

Sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication networks are expected to have dense infrastructures, large antenna size, wide bandwidth, cost-effective hardware, diversified positioning methods, and enhanced intelligence. Such trends bring both new challenges and opportunities for the practical design of 6G. On one hand, acquiring channel state information (CSI) in real time for all wireless links becomes quite challenging in 6G. On the other hand, there would be numerous data sources in 6G containing high-quality location-tagged channel data, e.g., the estimated channels or beams between base station (BS) and user equipment (UE), making it possible to better learn the local wireless environment. By exploiting this new opportunity and for tackling the CSI acquisition challenge, there is a promising paradigm shift from the conventional environment-unaware communications to the new environment-aware communications based on the novel approach of channel knowledge map (CKM). This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview on environment-aware communications enabled by CKM to fully harness its benefits for 6G. First, the basic concept of CKM is presented, followed by the comparison of CKM with various existing channel inference techniques. Next, the main techniques for CKM construction are discussed, including both environment model-free and environment model-assisted approaches. Furthermore, a general framework is presented for the utilization of CKM to achieve environment-aware communications, followed by some typical CKM-aided communication scenarios. Finally, important open problems in CKM research are highlighted and potential solutions are discussed to inspire future work.

CAFE: Carbon-Aware Federated Learning in Geographically Distributed Data Centers

Training large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models demands significant computational power and energy, leading to increased carbon footprint with potential environmental repercussions. This paper delves into the challenges of training AI models across geographically distributed (geo-distributed) data centers, emphasizing the balance between learning performance and carbon footprint. We consider Federated Learning (FL) as a solution, which prioritizes model parameter exchange over raw data, ensuring data privacy and compliance with local regulations. Given the variability in carbon intensity across regions, we propose a new framework called CAFE (short for Carbon-Aware Federated Learning) to optimize training within a fixed carbon footprint budget. Our approach incorporates coreset selection to assess learning performance, employs the Lyapunov drift-plus-penalty framework to address the unpredictability of future carbon intensity, and devises an efficient algorithm to address the combinatorial complexity of the data center selection. Through extensive simulations using real-world carbon intensity data, we demonstrate the efficacy of our algorithm, highlighting its superiority over existing methods in optimizing learning performance while minimizing environmental impact.

Maximum-Norm Error Estimates of Fourth-Order Compact and ADI Compact Finite Difference Methods for Nonlinear Coupled Bacterial Systems

In this paper, by introducing two temporal-derivative-dependent auxiliary variables, a linearized and decoupled fourth-order compact finite difference method is developed and analyzed for the nonlinear coupled bacterial systems. The temporal-spatial error splitting technique and discrete energy method are employed to prove the unconditional stability and convergence of the method in discrete maximum norm. Furthermore, to improve the computational efficiency, an alternating direction implicit (ADI) compact difference algorithm is proposed, and the unconditional stability and optimal-order maximum-norm error estimate for the ADI scheme are also strictly established. Finally, several numerical experiments are conducted to validate the theoretical convergence and to simulate the phenomena of bacterial extinction as well as the formation of endemic diseases.

Vision-Language Foundation Models as Effective Robot Imitators

Recent progress in vision language foundation models has shown their ability to understand multimodal data and resolve complicated vision language tasks, including robotics manipulation. We seek a straightforward way of making use of existing vision-language models (VLMs) with simple fine-tuning on robotics data. To this end, we derive a simple and novel vision-language manipulation framework, dubbed RoboFlamingo, built upon the open-source VLMs, OpenFlamingo. Unlike prior works, RoboFlamingo utilizes pre-trained VLMs for single-step vision-language comprehension, models sequential history information with an explicit policy head, and is slightly fine-tuned by imitation learning only on language-conditioned manipulation datasets. Such a decomposition provides RoboFlamingo the flexibility for open-loop control and deployment on low-performance platforms. By exceeding the state-of-the-art performance with a large margin on the tested benchmark, we show RoboFlamingo can be an effective and competitive alternative to adapt VLMs to robot control. Our extensive experimental results also reveal several interesting conclusions regarding the behavior of different pre-trained VLMs on manipulation tasks. We believe RoboFlamingo has the potential to be a cost-effective and easy-to-use solution for robotics manipulation, empowering everyone with the ability to fine-tune their own robotics policy.

MV2MAE: Multi-View Video Masked Autoencoders

Videos captured from multiple viewpoints can help in perceiving the 3D structure of the world and benefit computer vision tasks such as action recognition, tracking, etc. In this paper, we present a method for self-supervised learning from synchronized multi-view videos. We use a cross-view reconstruction task to inject geometry information in the model. Our approach is based on the masked autoencoder (MAE) framework. In addition to the same-view decoder, we introduce a separate cross-view decoder which leverages cross-attention mechanism to reconstruct a target viewpoint video using a video from source viewpoint, to help representations robust to viewpoint changes. For videos, static regions can be reconstructed trivially which hinders learning meaningful representations. To tackle this, we introduce a motion-weighted reconstruction loss which improves temporal modeling. We report state-of-the-art results on the NTU-60, NTU-120 and ETRI datasets, as well as in the transfer learning setting on NUCLA, PKU-MMD-II and ROCOG-v2 datasets, demonstrating the robustness of our approach. Code will be made available.

C2Ideas: Supporting Creative Interior Color Design Ideation with Large Language Model

Interior color design is a creative process that endeavors to allocate colors to furniture and other elements within an interior space. While much research focuses on generating realistic interior designs, these automated approaches often misalign with user intention and disregard design rationales. Informed by a need-finding preliminary study, we develop C2Ideas, an innovative system for designers to creatively ideate color schemes enabled by an intent-aligned and domain-oriented large language model. C2Ideas integrates a three-stage process: Idea Prompting stage distills user intentions into color linguistic prompts; Word-Color Association stage transforms the prompts into semantically and stylistically coherent color schemes; and Interior Coloring stage assigns colors to interior elements complying with design principles. We also develop an interactive interface that enables flexible user refinement and interpretable reasoning. C2Ideas has undergone a series of indoor cases and user studies, demonstrating its effectiveness and high recognition of interactive functionality by designers.

Joint Transmitter Design for Robust Secure Radar-Communication Coexistence Systems

This paper investigates the spectrum sharing between a multiple-input single-output (MISO) secure communication system and a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar system in the presence of one suspicious eavesdropper. We jointly design the radar waveform and communication beamforming vector at the two systems, such that the interference between the base station (BS) and radar is reduced, and the detrimental radar interference to the communication system is enhanced to jam the eavesdropper, thereby increasing secure information transmission performance. In particular, by considering the imperfect channel state information (CSI) for the user and eavesdropper, we maximize the worst-case secrecy rate at the user, while ensuring the detection performance of radar system. To tackle this challenging problem, we propose a two-layer robust cooperative algorithm based on the S-lemma and semidefinite relaxation techniques. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves significant secrecy rate gains over the non-robust scheme. Furthermore, we illustrate the trade-off between secrecy rate and detection probability.

Evaluating and Enhancing Large Language Models Performance in Domain-specific Medicine: Osteoarthritis Management with DocOA

The efficacy of large language models (LLMs) in domain-specific medicine, particularly for managing complex diseases such as osteoarthritis (OA), remains largely unexplored. This study focused on evaluating and enhancing the clinical capabilities of LLMs in specific domains, using osteoarthritis (OA) management as a case study. A domain specific benchmark framework was developed, which evaluate LLMs across a spectrum from domain-specific knowledge to clinical applications in real-world clinical scenarios. DocOA, a specialized LLM tailored for OA management that integrates retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and instruction prompts, was developed. The study compared the performance of GPT-3.5, GPT-4, and a specialized assistant, DocOA, using objective and human evaluations. Results showed that general LLMs like GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 were less effective in the specialized domain of OA management, particularly in providing personalized treatment recommendations. However, DocOA showed significant improvements. This study introduces a novel benchmark framework which assesses the domain-specific abilities of LLMs in multiple aspects, highlights the limitations of generalized LLMs in clinical contexts, and demonstrates the potential of tailored approaches for developing domain-specific medical LLMs.

Sensing With Random Signals

Radar systems typically employ well-designed deterministic signals for target sensing. In contrast to that, integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems have to use random signals to convey useful information, potentially causing sensing performance degradation. In this paper, we define a new sensing performance metric, namely, ergodic linear minimum mean square error (ELMMSE), accounting for the randomness of ISAC signals. Then, we investigate a data-dependent precoding scheme to minimize the ELMMSE, which attains the optimized sensing performance at the price of high computational complexity. To reduce the complexity, we present an alternative data-independent precoding scheme and propose a stochastic gradient projection (SGP) algorithm for ELMMSE minimization, which can be trained offline by locally generated signal samples. Finally, we demonstrate the superiority of the proposed methods by simulations.

Federated Learning with Instance-Dependent Noisy Label

Federated learning (FL) with noisy labels poses a significant challenge. Existing methods designed for handling noisy labels in centralized learning tend to lose their effectiveness in the FL setting, mainly due to the small dataset size and the heterogeneity of client data. While some attempts have been made to tackle FL with noisy labels, they primarily focused on scenarios involving class-conditional noise. In this paper, we study the more challenging and practical issue of instance-dependent noise (IDN) in FL. We introduce a novel algorithm called FedBeat (Federated Learning with Bayesian Ensemble-Assisted Transition Matrix Estimation). FedBeat aims to build a global statistically consistent classifier using the IDN transition matrix (IDNTM), which encompasses three synergistic steps: (1) A federated data extraction step that constructs a weak global model and extracts high-confidence data using a Bayesian model ensemble method. (2) A federated transition matrix estimation step in which clients collaboratively train an IDNTM estimation network based on the extracted data. (3) A federated classifier correction step that enhances the global model's performance by training it using a loss function tailored for noisy labels, leveraging the IDNTM. Experiments conducted on CIFAR-10 and SVHN verify that the proposed method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Powering (ISCAP): Towards Multi-functional 6G Wireless Networks

This article presents a novel multi-functional system for a sixth-generation (6G) wireless network with integrated sensing, communication, and powering (ISCAP), which unifies integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and wireless information and power transfer (WIPT) techniques. The multi-functional ISCAP network promises to enhance resource utilization efficiency, reduce network costs, and improve overall performance through versatile operational modes. Specifically, a multi-functional base station (BS) can enable multi-functional transmission, by exploiting the same radio signals to perform target/environment sensing, wireless communication, and wireless power transfer (WPT), simultaneously. Besides, the three functions can be intelligently coordinated to pursue mutual benefits,i.e., wireless sensing can be leveraged to enable light-training or even training-free WIPT by providing side-channel information, and the BS can utilize WPT to wirelessly charge low-power devices for ensuring sustainable ISAC. Furthermore, multiple multi-functional BSs can cooperate in both transmission and reception phases for efficient interference management, multi-static sensing, and distributed energy beamforming. For these operational modes, we discuss the technical challenges and potential solutions, particularly focusing on the fundamental performance tradeoff limits, transmission protocol design, as well as waveform and beamforming optimization. Finally, interesting research directions are identified.

Multi-IRS-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communications

This paper studies a multi-intelligent-reflecting-surface-(IRS)-enabled integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) system, in which multiple IRSs are installed to help the base station (BS) provide ISAC services at separate line-of-sight (LoS) blocked areas. We focus on the scenario with semi-passive uniform linear array (ULA) IRSs for sensing, in which each IRS is integrated with dedicated sensors for processing echo signals, and each IRS simultaneously serves one sensing target and multiple communication users (CUs) in its coverage area. In particular, we suppose that the BS sends combined information and dedicated sensing signals for ISAC. Two cases with point and extended targets are considered, in which each IRS aims to estimate the direction-of-arrival (DoA) of the corresponding target and the complete target response matrix, respectively. Under this setup, we first derive the closed-form Cram{é}r-Rao bounds (CRBs) for parameters estimation under the two target models. For the point target case, the CRB for DoA estimation is shown to be inversely proportional to the cubic of the number of sensors at each IRS, while for the extended target case, the CRB for target response matrix estimation is proportional to the number of IRS sensors. Next, we consider two different types of CU receivers that can and cannot cancel the interference from dedicated sensing signals prior to information decoding. To achieve fair and optimized sensing performance, we minimize the maximum CRB at all IRSs for the two target cases, via jointly optimizing the transmit beamformers at the BS and the reflective beamformers at the multiple IRSs, subject to the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at individual CUs, the maximum transmit power constraint at the BS, and the unit-modulus constraints at the multiple IRSs.

Online Vertical Federated Learning for Cooperative Spectrum Sensing

The increasing demand for wireless communication underscores the need to optimize radio frequency spectrum utilization. An effective strategy for leveraging underutilized licensed frequency bands is cooperative spectrum sensing (CSS), which enable multiple secondary users (SUs) to collaboratively detect the spectrum usage of primary users (PUs) prior to accessing the licensed spectrum. The increasing popularity of machine learning has led to a shift from traditional CSS methods to those based on deep learning. However, deep learning-based CSS methods often rely on centralized learning, posing challenges like communication overhead and data privacy risks. Recent research suggests vertical federated learning (VFL) as a potential solution, with its core concept centered on partitioning the deep neural network into distinct segments, with each segment is trained separately. However, existing VFL-based CSS works do not fully address the practical challenges arising from streaming data and the objective shift. In this work, we introduce online vertical federated learning (OVFL), a robust framework designed to address the challenges of ongoing data stream and shifting learning goals. Our theoretical analysis reveals that OVFL achieves a sublinear regret bound, thereby evidencing its efficiency. Empirical results from our experiments show that OVFL outperforms benchmarks in CSS tasks. We also explore the impact of various parameters on the learning performance.

IL-NeRF: Incremental Learning for Neural Radiance Fields with Camera Pose Alignment

Neural radiance fields (NeRF) is a promising approach for generating photorealistic images and representing complex scenes. However, when processing data sequentially, it can suffer from catastrophic forgetting, where previous data is easily forgotten after training with new data. Existing incremental learning methods using knowledge distillation assume that continuous data chunks contain both 2D images and corresponding camera pose parameters, pre-estimated from the complete dataset. This poses a paradox as the necessary camera pose must be estimated from the entire dataset, even though the data arrives sequentially and future chunks are inaccessible. In contrast, we focus on a practical scenario where camera poses are unknown. We propose IL-NeRF, a novel framework for incremental NeRF training, to address this challenge. IL-NeRF's key idea lies in selecting a set of past camera poses as references to initialize and align the camera poses of incoming image data. This is followed by a joint optimization of camera poses and replay-based NeRF distillation. Our experiments on real-world indoor and outdoor scenes show that IL-NeRF handles incremental NeRF training and outperforms the baselines by up to $54.04\%$ in rendering quality.

Secure Cell-Free Integrated Sensing and Communication in the Presence of Information and Sensing Eavesdroppers

This paper studies a secure cell-free integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, in which multiple ISAC transmitters collaboratively send confidential information to multiple communication users (CUs) and concurrently conduct target detection. Different from prior works investigating communication security against potential information eavesdropping, we consider the security of both communication and sensing in the presence of both information and sensing eavesdroppers that aim to intercept confidential communication information and extract target information, respectively. Towards this end, we optimize the joint information and sensing transmit beamforming at these ISAC transmitters for secure cell-free ISAC. Our objective is to maximize the detection probability over a designated sensing area while ensuring the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (SINR) requirements at CUs. Our formulation also takes into account the maximum tolerable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at information eavesdroppers for ensuring the confidentiality of information transmission, and the maximum detection probability constraints at sensing eavesdroppers for preserving sensing privacy. The formulated secure joint transmit beamforming problem is highly non-convex due to the intricate interplay between the detection probabilities, beamforming vectors, and SINR constraints. Fortunately, through strategic manipulation and via applying the semidefinite relaxation (SDR) technique, we successfully obtain the globally optimal solution to the design problem by rigorously verifying the tightness of SDR. Furthermore, we present two alternative joint beamforming designs based on the sensing SNR maximization over the specific sensing area and the coordinated beamforming, respectively. Numerical results reveal the benefits of our proposed design over these alternative benchmarks.
