Joint Maneuver and Beamforming Design for UAV-Enabled Integrated Sensing and Communication

This paper studies the UAV-enabled integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), in which UAVs are dispatched as aerial dual-functional access points (APs) for efficient ISAC. In particular, we consider a scenario with one UAV-AP equipped with a vertically placed uniform linear array (ULA), which sends combined information and sensing signals to communicate with multiple users and sense potential targets at interested areas on the ground simultaneously. Our objective is to jointly design the UAV maneuver with the transmit beamforming for optimizing the communication performance while ensuring the sensing requirements. First, we consider the quasi-stationary UAV scenario, in which the UAV is deployed at an optimizable location over the whole ISAC mission period. In this case, we jointly optimize the UAV deployment location, as well as the transmit information and sensing beamforming to maximize the weighted sum-rate throughput, subject to the sensing beampattern gain requirements and transmit power constraint. Although the above problem is non-convex, we find a high-quality solution by using the techniques of SCA and SDR, together with a 2D location search. Next, we consider the fully mobile UAV scenario, in which the UAV can fly over different locations during the ISAC mission period. In this case, we optimize the UAV flight trajectory, jointly with the transmit beamforming over time, to maximize the average weighted sum-rate throughput, subject to the sensing beampattern gain requirements and transmit power constraints as well as practical flight constraints. While the joint UAV trajectory and beamforming problem is more challenging to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm by adopting the alternating optimization together with SCA. Finally, numerical results are provided to validate the superiority of our proposed designs as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Toy model of harmonic and sum frequency generation in 2D nanostructures

Optical nonlinearities of matter are often associated with the response of individual atoms. Here, using a toy oscillator model, we show that in the confined geometry of a two-dimensional dielectric nanoparticle a collective nonlinear response of the atomic array can arise from the Coulomb interactions of the bound optical electrons, even if the individual atoms exhibit no nonlinearity. We determine the multipole contributions to the nonlinear response of nanoparticles and demonstrate that the odd order and even order nonlinear electric dipole moments scale with the area and perimeter of the nanoparticle, respectively.

Defect-induced nonlinearity in 2D nanoparticles

Optical nonlinearity depends on symmetry and symmetries vanish in the presence of defects. Vaccancy defects in centrosymmetric crystals and thin films are a well-known source of even-order optical nonlinearity, e.g. causing second harmonic generation. The emerging ability to manipulate defects in two-dimensional materials and nanoparticles provides an opportunity for engineering of optical nonlinearity. Here, we demonstrate the effect of defects on the nonlinear optical response of two-dimensional dielectric nanoparticles. Using a toy model, where bound optical electrons of linear atoms are coupled by nonlinear Coulomb interactions, we model defect-induced nonlinearity. We find that defects at particle edges contribute strongly to even-order optical nonlinearity and that unique nonlinear signatures of different defect states could provide the smallest conceivable QR-codes and extremely high density optical data storage, in principle approaching 1 bit per atom.

An End-to-End Differentiable Framework for Contact-Aware Robot Design

The current dominant paradigm for robotic manipulation involves two separate stages: manipulator design and control. Because the robot's morphology and how it can be controlled are intimately linked, joint optimization of design and control can significantly improve performance. Existing methods for co-optimization are limited and fail to explore a rich space of designs. The primary reason is the trade-off between the complexity of designs that is necessary for contact-rich tasks against the practical constraints of manufacturing, optimization, contact handling, etc. We overcome several of these challenges by building an end-to-end differentiable framework for contact-aware robot design. The two key components of this framework are: a novel deformation-based parameterization that allows for the design of articulated rigid robots with arbitrary, complex geometry, and a differentiable rigid body simulator that can handle contact-rich scenarios and computes analytical gradients for a full spectrum of kinematic and dynamic parameters. On multiple manipulation tasks, our framework outperforms existing methods that either only optimize for control or for design using alternate representations or co-optimize using gradient-free methods.

HAWK: Rapid Android Malware Detection through Heterogeneous Graph Attention Networks

Android is undergoing unprecedented malicious threats daily, but the existing methods for malware detection often fail to cope with evolving camouflage in malware. To address this issue, we present HAWK, a new malware detection framework for evolutionary Android applications. We model Android entities and behavioural relationships as a heterogeneous information network (HIN), exploiting its rich semantic metastructures for specifying implicit higher-order relationships. An incremental learning model is created to handle the applications that manifest dynamically, without the need for re-constructing the whole HIN and the subsequent embedding model. The model can pinpoint rapidly the proximity between a new application and existing in-sample applications and aggregate their numerical embeddings under various semantics. Our experiments examine more than 80,860 malicious and 100,375 benign applications developed over a period of seven years, showing that HAWK achieves the highest detection accuracy against baselines and takes only 3.5ms on average to detect an out-of-sample application, with the accelerated training time of 50x faster than the existing approach.

Channel Knowledge Map for Environment-Aware Communications: EM Algorithm for Map Construction

Channel knowledge map (CKM) is an emerging technique to enable environment-aware wireless communications, in which databases with location-specific channel knowledge are used to facilitate or even obviate real-time channel state information acquisition. One fundamental problem for CKM-enabled communication is how to efficiently construct the CKM based on finite measurement data points at limited user locations. Towards this end, this paper proposes a novel map construction method based on the \emph{expectation maximization} (EM) algorithm, by utilizing the available measurement data, jointly with the expert knowledge of well-established statistic channel models. The key idea is to partition the available data points into different groups, where each group shares the same modelling parameter values to be determined. We show that determining the modelling parameter values can be formulated as a maximum likelihood estimation problem with latent variables, which is then efficiently solved by the classic EM algorithm. Compared to the pure data-driven methods such as the nearest neighbor based interpolation, the proposed method is more efficient since only a small number of modelling parameters need to be determined and stored. Furthermore, the proposed method is extended for constructing a specific type of CKM, namely, the channel gain map (CGM), where closed-form expressions are derived for the E-step and M-step of the EM algorithm. Numerical results are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed map construction method as compared to the benchmark curve fitting method with one single model.

Integrated Sensing and Communications: Towards Dual-functional Wireless Networks for 6G and Beyond

As the standardization of 5G is being solidified, researchers are speculating what 6G will be. Integrating sensing functionality is emerging as a key feature of the 6G Radio Access Network (RAN), allowing to exploit the dense cell infrastructure of 5G for constructing a perceptive network. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview on the background, range of key applications and state-of-the-art approaches of Integrated Sensing and Communications (ISAC). We commence by discussing the interplay between sensing and communications (S&C) from a historical point of view, and then consider multiple facets of ISAC and its performance gains. By introducing both ongoing and potential use cases, we shed light on industrial progress and standardization activities related to ISAC. We analyze a number of performance tradeoffs between S&C, spanning from information theoretical limits, tradeoffs in physical layer performance, to the tradeoff in cross-layer designs. Next, we discuss signal processing aspects of ISAC, namely ISAC waveform design and receive signal processing. As a step further, we provide our vision on the deeper integration between S&C within the framework of perceptive networks, where the two functionalities are expected to mutually assist each other, i.e., communication-assisted sensing and sensing-assisted communications. Finally, we summarize the paper by identifying the potential integration between ISAC and other emerging communication technologies, and their positive impact on the future of wireless networks.

UAV-Enabled Data Collection for Wireless Sensor Networks with Distributed Beamforming

This paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless sensor network, in which one UAV flies in the sky to collect the data transmitted from a set of ground nodes (GNs) via distributed beamforming. We consider two scenarios with delay-tolerant and delay-sensitive applications, in which the GNs send the common/shared messages to the UAV via adaptive- and fixed-rate transmissions, respectively. For the two scenarios, we aim to maximize the average data-rate throughput and minimize the transmission outage probability, respectively, by jointly optimizing the UAV's trajectory design and the GNs' transmit power allocation over time, subject to the UAV's flight speed constraints and the GNs' individual average power constraints. However, the two formulated problems are both non-convex and thus generally difficult to be optimally solved. To tackle this issue, we first consider the relaxed problems in the ideal case with the UAV's flight speed constraints ignored, for which the well-structured optimal solutions are obtained to reveal the fundamental performance upper bounds. It is shown that for the two approximate problems, the optimal trajectory solutions have the same multi-location-hovering structure, but with different optimal power allocation strategies. Next, for the general problems with the UAV's flight speed constraints considered, we propose efficient algorithms to obtain high-quality solutions by using the techniques from convex optimization and approximation. Finally, numerical results show that our proposed designs significantly outperform other benchmark schemes, in terms of the achieved data-rate throughput and outage probability under the two scenarios. It is also observed that when the mission period becomes sufficiently long, our proposed designs approach the performance upper bounds when the UAV's flight speed constraints are ignored.

Probabilistic Human Motion Prediction via A Bayesian Neural Network

Human motion prediction is an important and challenging topic that has promising prospects in efficient and safe human-robot-interaction systems. Currently, the majority of the human motion prediction algorithms are based on deterministic models, which may lead to risky decisions for robots. To solve this problem, we propose a probabilistic model for human motion prediction in this paper. The key idea of our approach is to extend the conventional deterministic motion prediction neural network to a Bayesian one. On one hand, our model could generate several future motions when given an observed motion sequence. On the other hand, by calculating the Epistemic Uncertainty and the Heteroscedastic Aleatoric Uncertainty, our model could tell the robot if the observation has been seen before and also give the optimal result among all possible predictions. We extensively validate our approach on a large scale benchmark dataset Human3.6m. The experiments show that our approach performs better than deterministic methods. We further evaluate our approach in a Human-Robot-Interaction (HRI) scenario. The experimental results show that our approach makes the interaction more efficient and safer.

Broadband energy squeezing and tunneling based on unidirectional modes

Energy squeezing attracts many attentions for its potential applications in electromagnetic (EM) energy harvesting and optical communication. However, due to the Fabry-Perot resonance, only the EM waves with discrete frequencies can be squeezed and, as far as we know, in the previous energy-squeezing devices, stringent requirements of the materials or the geometrical shape are needed. We note that the structures filled with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) mediums as reported in some works can squeeze and tunnel EM waves at frequencies (e.g. plasma frequency). However, the group velocity is usually near zero which means few EM information travel through the structures. In this paper, low-loss energy squeezing and tunneling (EST) based on unidirectional modes were demonstrated in YIG-based one-way waveguides at microwave frequencies. According to our theoretical analysis and the simulations using finite element method, broadband EST was achieved and the EM EST was observed even for extremely bended structures. Besides, similar EM EST was achieved in a realistic three-dimensional remanence-based one-way waveguide as well. The unidirectional modes-based EST paving the way to ultra-subwavelength EM focusing, enhanced nonlinear optics, and designing numerous functional devices in integrated optical circuits such as phase modulator.

Multi-Objective Graph Heuristic Search for Terrestrial Robot Design

We present methods for co-designing rigid robots over control and morphology (including discrete topology) over multiple objectives. Previous work has addressed problems in single-objective robot co-design or multi-objective control. However, the joint multi-objective co-design problem is extremely important for generating capable, versatile, algorithmically designed robots. In this work, we present Multi-Objective Graph Heuristic Search, which extends a single-objective graph heuristic search from previous work to enable a highly efficient multi-objective search in a combinatorial design topology space. Core to this approach, we introduce a new universal, multi-objective heuristic function based on graph neural networks that is able to effectively leverage learned information between different task trade-offs. We demonstrate our approach on six combinations of seven terrestrial locomotion and design tasks, including one three-objective example. We compare the captured Pareto fronts across different methods and demonstrate that our multi-objective graph heuristic search quantitatively and qualitatively outperforms other techniques.

Multi-VAE: Learning Disentangled View-common and View-peculiar Visual Representations for Multi-view Clustering

Multi-view clustering, a long-standing and important research problem, focuses on mining complementary information from diverse views. However, existing works often fuse multiple views' representations or handle clustering in a common feature space, which may result in their entanglement especially for visual representations. To address this issue, we present a novel VAE-based multi-view clustering framework (Multi-VAE) by learning disentangled visual representations. Concretely, we define a view-common variable and multiple view-peculiar variables in the generative model. The prior of view-common variable obeys approximately discrete Gumbel Softmax distribution, which is introduced to extract the common cluster factor of multiple views. Meanwhile, the prior of view-peculiar variable follows continuous Gaussian distribution, which is used to represent each view's peculiar visual factors. By controlling the mutual information capacity to disentangle the view-common and view-peculiar representations, continuous visual information of multiple views can be separated so that their common discrete cluster information can be effectively mined. Experimental results demonstrate that Multi-VAE enjoys the disentangled and explainable visual representations, while obtaining superior clustering performance compared with state-of-the-art methods.

How to Test the Randomness from the Wireless Channel for Security?

We revisit the traditional framework of wireless secret key generation, where two parties leverage the wireless channel randomness to establish a secret key. The essence in the framework is to quantify channel randomness into bit sequences for key generation. Conducting randomness tests on such bit sequences has been a common practice to provide the confidence to validate whether they are random. Interestingly, despite different settings in the tests, existing studies interpret the results the same: passing tests means that the bit sequences are indeed random. In this paper, we investigate how to properly test the wireless channel randomness to ensure enough security strength and key generation efficiency. In particular, we define an adversary model that leverages the imperfect randomness of the wireless channel to search the generated key, and create a guideline to set up randomness testing and privacy amplification to eliminate security loss and achieve efficient key generation rate. We use theoretical analysis and comprehensive experiments to reveal that common practice misuses randomness testing and privacy amplification: (i) no security insurance of key strength, (ii) low efficiency of key generation rate. After revision by our guideline, security loss can be eliminated and key generation rate can be increased significantly.

A Comprehensive Overview on 5G-and-Beyond Networks with UAVs: From Communications to Sensing and Intelligence

Due to the advancements in cellular technologies and the dense deployment of cellular infrastructure, integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) into the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond cellular networks is a promising solution to achieve safe UAV operation as well as enabling diversified applications with mission-specific payload data delivery. In particular, 5G networks need to support three typical usage scenarios, namely, enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC), and massive machine-type communications (mMTC). On the one hand, UAVs can be leveraged as cost-effective aerial platforms to provide ground users with enhanced communication services by exploiting their high cruising altitude and controllable maneuverability in three-dimensional (3D) space. On the other hand, providing such communication services simultaneously for both UAV and ground users poses new challenges due to the need for ubiquitous 3D signal coverage as well as the strong air-ground network interference. Besides the requirement of high-performance wireless communications, the ability to support effective and efficient sensing as well as network intelligence is also essential for 5G-and-beyond 3D heterogeneous wireless networks with coexisting aerial and ground users. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of the latest research efforts on integrating UAVs into cellular networks, with an emphasis on how to exploit advanced techniques (e.g., intelligent reflecting surface, short packet transmission, energy harvesting, joint communication and radar sensing, and edge intelligence) to meet the diversified service requirements of next-generation wireless systems. Moreover, we highlight important directions for further investigation in future work.

Existence of Strong Solution for the Complexified Non-linear Poisson Boltzmann Equation

We prove the existence and uniqueness of the complexified Nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann Equation (nPBE) in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The nPBE is a model equation in nonlinear electrostatics. The standard convex optimization argument to the complexified nPBE no longer applies, but instead, a contraction mapping argument is developed. Furthermore, we show that uniqueness can be lost if the hypotheses given are not satisfied. The complixified nPBE is highly relevant to regularity analysis of the solution of the real nPBE with respect to the dielectric (diffusion) and Debye-Hückel coefficients. This approach is also well-suited to investigate the existence and uniqueness problem for a wide class of semi-linear elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs).

User Grouping and Reflective Beamforming for IRS-Aided URLLC

This paper studies an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided downlink ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) system, in which an IRS is dedicatedly deployed to assist a base station (BS) to send individual short-packet messages to multiple users. To enhance the URLLC performance, the users are divided into different groups and the messages for users in each group are encoded into a single codeword. By considering the time division multiple access (TDMA) protocol among different groups, our objective is to minimize the total latency for all users subject to their individual reliability requirements, via jointly optimizing the user grouping and block-length allocation at the BS together with the reflective beamforming at the IRS. We solve the latency minimization problem via the alternating optimization, in which the blocklengths and the reflective beamforming are optimized by using the techniques of successive convex approximation (SCA) and semi-definite relaxation (SDR), while the user grouping is updated by K-means and greedy-based methods. Numerical results show that the proposed designs can significantly reduce the communication latency, as compared to various benchmark schemes, which unveil the importance of user grouping and reflective beamforming optimization for exploiting the joint encoding gain and enhancing the worst-case user performance.

Transparent Model of Unabridged Data (TMUD)

Recent advancements in computational power and algorithms have enabled unabridged data (e.g., raw images or audio) to be used as input in some models (e.g., deep learning). However, the black box nature of such models reduces their likelihood of adoption by marketing scholars. Our paradigm of analysis, the Transparent Model of Unabridged Data (TMUD), enables researchers to investigate the inner workings of such black box models by incorporating an ex ante filtration module and an ex post experimentation module. We empirically demonstrate the TMUD by investigating the role of facial components and sexual dimorphism in face perceptions, which have implications for four marketing contexts: advertisement (perceptions of approachability, trustworthiness, and competence), brand (perceptions of whether a face represents a brand's typical customer), category (perceptions of whether a face represents a category's typical customer), and customer persona (perceptions of whether a face represents the persona of a brand's customer segment). Our results reveal new and useful findings that enrich the existing literature on face perception, most of which is based on abridged attributes (e.g., width of mouth). The TMUD has great potential to be a useful paradigm for generating theoretical insights and may encourage more marketing researchers and practitioners to use unabridged data.

Resource Rationing for Wireless Federated Learning: Concept, Benefits, and Challenges

We advocate a new resource allocation framework, which we term resource rationing, for wireless federated learning (FL). Unlike existing resource allocation methods for FL, resource rationing focuses on balancing resources across learning rounds so that their collective impact on the federated learning performance is explicitly captured. This new framework can be integrated seamlessly with existing resource allocation schemes to optimize the convergence of FL. In particular, a novel "later-is-better" principle is at the front and center of resource rationing, which is validated empirically in several instances of wireless FL. We also point out technical challenges and research opportunities that are worth pursuing. Resource rationing highlights the benefits of treating the emerging FL as a new class of service that has its own characteristics, and designing communication algorithms for this particular service.
