Forecasting Popularity of Videos using Social Media

This paper presents a systematic online prediction method (Social-Forecast) that is capable to accurately forecast the popularity of videos promoted by social media. Social-Forecast explicitly considers the dynamically changing and evolving propagation patterns of videos in social media when making popularity forecasts, thereby being situation and context aware. Social-Forecast aims to maximize the forecast reward, which is defined as a tradeoff between the popularity prediction accuracy and the timeliness with which a prediction is issued. The forecasting is performed online and requires no training phase or a priori knowledge. We analytically bound the prediction performance loss of Social-Forecast as compared to that obtained by an omniscient oracle and prove that the bound is sublinear in the number of video arrivals, thereby guaranteeing its short-term performance as well as its asymptotic convergence to the optimal performance. In addition, we conduct extensive experiments using real-world data traces collected from the videos shared in RenRen, one of the largest online social networks in China. These experiments show that our proposed method outperforms existing view-based approaches for popularity prediction (which are not context-aware) by more than 30% in terms of prediction rewards.

Non-stationary Resource Allocation Policies for Delay-constrained Video Streaming: Application to Video over Internet-of-Things-enabled Networks

Due to the high bandwidth requirements and stringent delay constraints of multi-user wireless video transmission applications, ensuring that all video senders have sufficient transmission opportunities to use before their delay deadlines expire is a longstanding research problem. We propose a novel solution that addresses this problem without assuming detailed packet-level knowledge, which is unavailable at resource allocation time. Instead, we translate the transmission delay deadlines of each sender's video packets into a monotonically-decreasing weight distribution within the considered time horizon. Higher weights are assigned to the slots that have higher probability for deadline-abiding delivery. Given the sets of weights of the senders' video streams, we propose the low-complexity Delay-Aware Resource Allocation (DARA) approach to compute the optimal slot allocation policy that maximizes the deadline-abiding delivery of all senders. A unique characteristic of the DARA approach is that it yields a non-stationary slot allocation policy that depends on the allocation of previous slots. We prove that the DARA approach is optimal for weight distributions that are exponentially decreasing in time. We further implement our framework for real-time video streaming in wireless personal area networks that are gaining significant traction within the new Internet-of-Things (IoT) paradigm. For multiple surveillance videos encoded with H.264/AVC and streamed via the 6tisch framework that simulates the IoT-oriented IEEE 802.15.4e TSCH medium access control, our solution is shown to be the only one that ensures all video bitstreams are delivered with acceptable quality in a deadline-abiding manner.

Information Sharing in Networks of Strategic Agents

To ensure that social networks (e.g. opinion consensus, cooperative estimation, distributed learning and adaptation etc.) proliferate and efficiently operate, the participating agents need to collaborate with each other by repeatedly sharing information. However, sharing information is often costly for the agents while resulting in no direct immediate benefit for them. Hence, lacking incentives to collaborate, strategic agents who aim to maximize their own individual utilities will withhold rather than share information, leading to inefficient operation or even collapse of networks. In this paper, we develop a systematic framework for designing distributed rating protocols aimed at incentivizing the strategic agents to collaborate with each other by sharing information. The proposed incentive protocols exploit the ongoing nature of the agents' interactions to assign ratings and through them, determine future rewards and punishments: agents that have behaved as directed enjoy high ratings -- and hence greater future access to the information of others; agents that have not behaved as directed enjoy low ratings -- and hence less future access to the information of others. Unlike existing rating protocols, the proposed protocol operates in a distributed manner, online, and takes into consideration the underlying interconnectivity of agents as well as their heterogeneity. We prove that in many deployment scenarios the price of anarchy (PoA) obtained by adopting the proposed rating protocols is one. In settings in which the PoA is larger than one, we show that the proposed rating protocol still significantly outperforms existing incentive mechanisms such as Tit-for-Tat. Importantly, the proposed rating protocols can also operate efficiently in deployment scenarios where the strategic agents interact over time-varying network topologies where new agents join the network over time.

Energy Efficient Coordinated Beamforming for Multi-cell MISO Systems

In this paper, we investigate the optimal energy efficient coordinated beamforming in multi-cell multiple-input single-output (MISO) systems with $K$ multiple-antenna base stations (BS) and $K$ single-antenna mobile stations (MS), where each BS sends information to its own intended MS with cooperatively designed transmit beamforming. We assume single user detection at the MS by treating the interference as noise. By taking into account a realistic power model at the BS, we characterize the Pareto boundary of the achievable energy efficiency (EE) region of the $K$ links, where the EE of each link is defined as the achievable data rate at the MS divided by the total power consumption at the BS. Since the EE of each link is non-cancave (which is a non-concave function over an affine function), characterizing this boundary is difficult. To meet this challenge, we relate this multi-cell MISO system to cognitive radio (CR) MISO channels by applying the concept of interference temperature (IT), and accordingly transform the EE boundary characterization problem into a set of fractional concave programming problems. Then, we apply the fractional concave programming technique to solve these fractional concave problems, and correspondingly give a parametrization for the EE boundary in terms of IT levels. Based on this characterization, we further present a decentralized algorithm to implement the multi-cell coordinated beamforming, which is shown by simulations to achieve the EE Pareto boundary.

From microscopic theory to macroscopic theory: symmetries and order parameters of rigid molecules

We use density functional theory to describe the phase behaviors of rigid molecules. The construction of kernel function G(x, P, x, P) is discussed. Excluded-volume potential is calculated for two types of molecules with C_{2v} symmetry. Molecular symmetries lead to the symmetries of G and density function f(P), enabling a reduction of configuration space. By approximating G with a polynomial, the system can be fully characterized by some moments corresponding to the form of G. The symmetries of G determine the form of the polynomial, while the coefficients are determined by temperature and molecular parameters. The analysis of the impact of coefficients helps us to choose independent variables in the moments as order parameters. Order parameters for bent-core molecules are predicted.

Throughput Optimal Policies for Energy Harvesting Wireless Transmitters with Non-Ideal Circuit Power

Characterizing the fundamental tradeoffs for maximizing energy efficiency (EE) versus spectrum efficiency (SE) is a key problem in wireless communication. In this paper, we address this problem for a point-to-point additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with the transmitter powered solely via energy harvesting from the environment. In addition, we assume a practical on-off transmitter model with non-ideal circuit power, i.e., when the transmitter is on, its consumed power is the sum of the transmit power and a constant circuit power. Under this setup, we study the optimal transmit power allocation to maximize the average throughput over a finite horizon, subject to the time-varying energy constraint and the non-ideal circuit power consumption. First, we consider the off-line optimization under the assumption that the energy arrival time and amount are a priori known at the transmitter. Although this problem is non-convex due to the non-ideal circuit power, we show an efficient optimal solution that in general corresponds to a two-phase transmission: the first phase with an EE-maximizing on-off power allocation, and the second phase with a SE-maximizing power allocation that is non-decreasing over time, thus revealing an interesting result that both the EE and SE optimizations are unified in an energy harvesting communication system. We then extend the optimal off-line algorithm to the case with multiple parallel AWGN channels, based on the principle of nested optimization. Finally, inspired by the off-line optimal solution, we propose a new online algorithm under the practical setup with only the past and present energy state information (ESI) known at the transmitter.

Magnetic order in the repulsive Fermi-Hubbard model in three-dimensions and the crossover to two-dimensions

Systems of fermions described by the three-dimensional (3D) repulsive Hubbard model on a cubic lattice have recently attracted considerable attention due to their possible experimental realization via cold atoms in an optical lattice. Because analytical and numerical results are limited away from half-filling, we study the ground state of the doped system from weak to intermediate interaction strengths within the generalized Hartree-Fock approximation. The exact solution to the self-consistent-field equations in the thermodynamic limit is obtained and the ground state is shown to exhibit antiferromagnetic order and incommensurate spin-density waves (SDW). At low interaction strengths, the SDW has unidirectional character with a leading wave-vector along the $<100>$-direction, and the system is metallic. As the interaction increases, the system undergoes a simultaneous structural and metal-to-insulator transition to a unidirectional SDW state along the $<111>$-direction, with a different wavelength. We systematically determine the real- and momentum-space properties of these states. The crossover from 3D to two-dimensions (2D) is then studied by varying the inter-plane hopping amplitude, which can be experimentally realized by tuning the distance between a stack of square-lattice layers. Detailed comparisons are made between the exact numerical results and predictions from the pairing model, a variational {\em ansatz} based on the pairing of spins in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. Most of the numerical results can be understood quantitatively from the ansatz, which provides a simple picture for the nature of the SDW states.

Social Norm Design for Information Exchange Systems with Limited Observations

Information exchange systems differ in many ways, but all share a common vulnerability to selfish behavior and free-riding. In this paper, we build incentives schemes based on social norms. Social norms prescribe a social strategy for the users in the system to follow and deploy reputation schemes to reward or penalize users depending on their behaviors. Because users in these systems often have only limited capability to observe the global system information, e.g. the reputation distribution of the users participating in the system, their beliefs about the reputation distribution are heterogeneous and biased. Such belief heterogeneity causes a positive fraction of users to not follow the social strategy. In such practical scenarios, the standard equilibrium analysis deployed in the economics literature is no longer directly applicable and hence, the system design needs to consider these differences. To investigate how the system designs need to change when the participating users have only limited observations, we focus on a simple social norm with binary reputation labels but allow adjusting the punishment severity through randomization. First, we model the belief heterogeneity using a suitable Bayesian belief function. Next, we formalize the users' optimal decision problems and derive in which scenarios they follow the prescribed social strategy. With this result, we then study the system dynamics and formally define equilibrium in the sense that the system is stable when users strategically optimize their decisions. By rigorously studying two specific cases where users' belief distribution is constant or is linearly influenced by the true reputation distribution, we prove that the optimal reputation update rule is to choose the mildest possible punishment. This result is further confirmed for higher order beliefs in simulations.

Designing Rating Systems to Promote Mutual Security for Interconnected Networks

Interconnected autonomous systems often share security risks. However, an autonomous system lacks the incentive to make (sufficient) security investments if the cost exceeds its own benefit even though doing that would be socially beneficial. In this paper, we develop a systematic and rigorous framework for analyzing and significantly improving the mutual security of a collection of ASs that interact frequently over a long period of time. Using this framework, we show that simple incentive schemes based on rating systems can be designed to encourage the autonomous systems' security investments, thereby significantly improving their mutual security.

Designing Practical Distributed Exchange for Online Communities

In many online systems, individuals provide services for each other; the recipient of the service obtains a benefit but the provider of the service incurs a cost. If benefit exceeds cost, provision of the service increases social welfare and should therefore be encouraged -- but the individuals providing the service gain no (immediate) benefit from providing the service and hence have an incentive to withhold service. Hence there is scope for designing a system that improves welfare by encouraging exchange. To operate successfully within the confines of the online environment, such a system should be distributed, practicable, and consistent with individual incentives. This paper proposes and analyzes a simple such system that relies on the exchange of {\em tokens}; the emphasis is on the design of a protocol (number of tokens and suggested strategies). We provide estimates for the efficiency of such protocols and show that choosing the right protocol will lead to almost full efficiency if agents are sufficiently patient. However, choosing the wrong protocols may lead to an enormous loss of efficiency.

Freezing of a Liquid Marble

In this study, we present for the first time the observations of a freezing liquid marble. In the experiment, liquid marbles are gently placed on the cold side of a Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC) and the morphological changes are recorded and characterized thereafter. These liquid marbles are noticed to undergo a shape transition from a spherical to a flying-saucer shaped morphology. The freezing dynamics of liquid marbles is observed to be very different from that of a freezing water droplet on a superhydrophobic surface. For example, the pointy tip appearing on a frozen water drop could not be observed for a frozen liquid marble. In the end, we highlight a possible explanation for the observed morphology.

Acoustophoresis in Variously Shaped Liquid Droplets

The ability to precisely trap, transport and manipulate micrometer-sized objects, including biological cells, DNA-coated microspheres and microorganisms, is very important in life science studies and biomedical applications. In this study, acoustic radiation force in an ultrasonic standing wave field is used for micro-objects manipulation, a technique termed as acoustophoresis. Free surfaces of liquid droplets are used as sound reflectors to confine sound waves inside the droplets. Two techniques were developed for precise control of droplet shapes: edge pinning and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interface pinning. For all tested droplet shapes, including circular, annular and rectangular, our experiments show that polymer micro particles can be manipulated by ultrasound and form into a variety of patterns, for example, concentric rings and radial lines in an annular droplet. The complexity of the pattern increases with increasing frequency, and the observations are in line with simulation results. The acoustic manipulation technique developed here has the potential to be integrated into a more complex on-chip microfluidic circuit. Especially because our method is well compatible with electrowetting technology, which is a powerful tool for manipulating droplets with free surfaces, the combination of the two methods can provide more versatile manipulation abilities and may bring a wealth of novel applications. In the end, we demonstrate for the first time that acoustophoresis can be used for manipulating Caenorhabditis elegans.

Liquid marbles as thermally robust droplets: coating-assisted Leidenfrost-like effect

The Leidenfrost effect-prolonged evaporation of droplets on a superheated surface-happens only when the surface temperature is above a certain transitional value. Here, we show that specially engineered droplets - liquid marbles - can exhibit similar effect at any superheated temperatures (up to 465 oC tested in our experiment) without a transition. Very possibly, this phenomenon is due to the fact that liquid marbles are droplets coated with microparticles and these microparticles help levitate the liquid core and maintain an insulation layer between the liquid and the superheated surface.

Simple graphene chemiresistors as pH sensors: fabrication and characterization

We report the fabrication and characterization of a simple gate-free graphene device as a pH sensor. The graphene sheets are made by mechanical exfoliation. Platinum contact electrodes are fabricated with a mask-free process using focused ion beam, and then expanded by silver paint. Annealing is used to improve the electrical contact. The experiment on the fabricated graphene device shows that the resistance of the device decreases linearly with increasing pH values (in the range of 4-10)in the surrounding liquid environment. The resolution achieved in our experiments is approximately 0.3 pH in alkali environment. The sensitivity of the device is calculated as approximately 2 kΩ/pH. The simple configuration, miniaturized size and the integration ability make graphene-based sensors promising candidates for future micro/nano applications.

Energy Efficiency Optimization for MIMO Broadcast Channels

Characterizing the fundamental energy efficiency (EE) limits of MIMO broadcast channels (BC) is significant for the development of green wireless communications. We address the EE optimization problem for MIMO-BC in this paper and consider a practical power model, i.e., taking into account a transmit independent power which is related to the number of active transmit antennas. Under this setup, we propose a new optimization approach, in which the transmit covariance is optimized under fixed active transmit antenna sets, and then active transmit antenna selection (ATAS) is utilized. During the transmit covariance optimization, we propose a globally optimal energy efficient iterative water-filling scheme through solving a series of concave fractional programs based on the block-coordinate ascent algorithm. After that, ATAS is employed to determine the active transmit antenna set. Since activating more transmit antennas can achieve higher sum-rate but at the cost of larger transmit independent power consumption, there exists a tradeoff between the sum-rate gain and the power consumption. Here ATAS can exploit the best tradeoff and thus further improve the EE. Optimal exhaustive search and low-complexity norm based ATAS schemes are developed. Through simulations, we discuss the effect of different parameters on the EE of the MIMO-BC.

An Energy Efficient Semi-static Power Control and Link Adaptation Scheme in UMTS HSDPA

High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) has been successfully applied in commercial systems and improves user experience significantly. However, it incurs substantial energy consumption. In this paper, we address this issue by proposing a novel energy efficient semi-static power control and link adaptation scheme in HSDPA. Through estimating the EE under different modulation and coding schemes (MCSs) and corresponding transmit power, the proposed scheme can determine the most energy efficient MCS level and transmit power at the Node B. And then the Node B configure the optimal MCS level and transmit power. In order to decrease the signaling overhead caused by the configuration, a dual trigger mechanism is employed. After that, we extend the proposed scheme to the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) scenarios. Simulation results confirm the significant EE improvement of our proposed scheme. Finally, we give a discussion on the potential EE gain and challenge of the energy efficient mode switching between single input multiple output (SIMO) and MIMO configuration in HSDPA.

Improving Energy Efficiency Through Multimode Transmission in the Downlink MIMO Systems

Adaptively adjusting system parameters including bandwidth, transmit power and mode to maximize the "Bits per-Joule" energy efficiency (BPJ-EE) in the downlink MIMO systems with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered in this paper. By mode we refer to choice of transmission schemes i.e. singular value decomposition (SVD) or block diagonalization (BD), active transmit/receive antenna number and active user number. We derive optimal bandwidth and transmit power for each dedicated mode at first. During the derivation, accurate capacity estimation strategies are proposed to cope with the imperfect CSIT caused capacity prediction problem. Then, an ergodic capacity based mode switching strategy is proposed to further improve the BPJ-EE, which provides insights on the preferred mode under given scenarios. Mode switching compromises different power parts, exploits the tradeoff between the multiplexing gain and the imperfect CSIT caused inter-user interference, improves the BPJ-EE significantly.

Energy Efficient Iterative Waterfilling for the MIMO Broadcasting Channels

Optimizing energy efficiency (EE) for the MIMO broadcasting channels (BC) is considered in this paper, where a practical power model is taken into account. Although the EE of the MIMO BC is non-concave, we reformulate it as a quasiconcave function based on the uplink-downlink duality. After that, an energy efficient iterative waterfilling scheme is proposed based on the block-coordinate ascent algorithm to obtain the optimal transmission policy efficiently, and the solution is proved to be convergent. Through simulations, we validate the efficiency of the proposed scheme and discuss the system parameters' effect on the EE.
