Mass production and characterization of 3-inch PMTs for the JUNO experiment

26,000 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) have been produced for Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) by the Hainan Zhanchuang Photonics Technology Co., Ltd (HZC) company in China and passed all acceptance tests with only 15 tubes rejected. The mass production began in 2018 and elapsed for about 2 years at a rate of $\sim$1,000~PMTs per month. The characterization of the PMTs was performed in the factory concurrently with production as a joint effort between HZC and JUNO. Fifteen performance parameters were tracked at different sampling rates, and novel working strategies were implemented to improve quality assurance. This constitutes the largest sample of 3-inch PMTs ever produced and studied in detail to date.

Learning Tubule-Sensitive CNNs for Pulmonary Airway and Artery-Vein Segmentation in CT

Training convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for segmentation of pulmonary airway, artery, and vein is challenging due to sparse supervisory signals caused by the severe class imbalance between tubular targets and background. We present a CNNs-based method for accurate airway and artery-vein segmentation in non-contrast computed tomography. It enjoys superior sensitivity to tenuous peripheral bronchioles, arterioles, and venules. The method first uses a feature recalibration module to make the best use of features learned from the neural networks. Spatial information of features is properly integrated to retain relative priority of activated regions, which benefits the subsequent channel-wise recalibration. Then, attention distillation module is introduced to reinforce representation learning of tubular objects. Fine-grained details in high-resolution attention maps are passing down from one layer to its previous layer recursively to enrich context. Anatomy prior of lung context map and distance transform map is designed and incorporated for better artery-vein differentiation capacity. Extensive experiments demonstrated considerable performance gains brought by these components. Compared with state-of-the-art methods, our method extracted much more branches while maintaining competitive overall segmentation performance. A New Neuromorphic Computing Approach for Epileptic Seizure Prediction

Several high specificity and sensitivity seizure prediction methods with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are reported. However, CNNs are computationally expensive and power hungry. These inconveniences make CNN-based methods hard to be implemented on wearable devices. Motivated by the energy-efficient spiking neural networks (SNNs), a neuromorphic computing approach for seizure prediction is proposed in this work. This approach uses a designed gaussian random discrete encoder to generate spike sequences from the EEG samples and make predictions in a spiking convolutional neural network (Spiking-CNN) which combines the advantages of CNNs and SNNs. The experimental results show that the sensitivity, specificity and AUC can remain 95.1%, 99.2% and 0.912 respectively while the computation complexity is reduced by 98.58% compared to CNN, indicating that the proposed Spiking-CNN is hardware friendly and of high precision.

Deep Deformation Detail Synthesis for Thin Shell Models

In physics-based cloth animation, rich folds and detailed wrinkles are achieved at the cost of expensive computational resources and huge labor tuning. Data-driven techniques make efforts to reduce the computation significantly by a database. One type of methods relies on human poses to synthesize fitted garments which cannot be applied to general cloth. Another type of methods adds details to the coarse meshes without such restrictions. However, existing works usually utilize coordinate-based representations which cannot cope with large-scale deformation, and requires dense vertex correspondences between coarse and fine meshes. Moreover, as such methods only add details, they require coarse meshes to be close to fine meshes, which can be either impossible, or require unrealistic constraints when generating fine meshes. To address these challenges, we develop a temporally and spatially as-consistent-as-possible deformation representation (named TS-ACAP) and a DeformTransformer network to learn the mapping from low-resolution meshes to detailed ones. This TS-ACAP representation is designed to ensure both spatial and temporal consistency for sequential large-scale deformations from cloth animations. With this representation, our DeformTransformer network first utilizes two mesh-based encoders to extract the coarse and fine features, respectively. To transduct the coarse features to the fine ones, we leverage the Transformer network that consists of frame-level attention mechanisms to ensure temporal coherence of the prediction. Experimental results show that our method is able to produce reliable and realistic animations in various datasets at high frame rates: 10 ~ 35 times faster than physics-based simulation, with superior detail synthesis abilities than existing methods.

Sentiment Correlation in Financial News Networks and Associated Market Movements

In an increasingly connected global market, news sentiment towards one company may not only indicate its own market performance, but can also be associated with a broader movement on the sentiment and performance of other companies from the same or even different sectors. In this paper, we apply NLP techniques to understand news sentiment of 87 companies among the most reported on Reuters for a period of seven years. We investigate the propagation of such sentiment in company networks and evaluate the associated market movements in terms of stock price and volatility. Our results suggest that, in certain sectors, strong media sentiment towards one company may indicate a significant change in media sentiment towards related companies measured as neighbours in a financial network constructed from news co-occurrence. Furthermore, there exists a weak but statistically significant association between strong media sentiment and abnormal market return as well as volatility. Such an association is more significant at the level of individual companies, but nevertheless remains visible at the level of sectors or groups of companies.

Mobile-end Tone Mapping based on Integral Image and Integral Histogram

Wide dynamic range (WDR) image tone mapping is in high demand in many applications like film production, security monitoring, and photography. It is especially crucial for mobile devices because most of the images taken today are from mobile phones, hence such technology is highly demanded in the consumer market of mobile devices and is essential for a good customer experience. However, high-quality and high-performance WDR image tone mapping implementations are rarely found in the mobile-end. In this paper, we introduce a high performance, mobile-end WDR image tone mapping implementation. It leverages the tone mapping results of multiple receptive fields and calculates a suitable value for each pixel. The utilization of integral image and integral histogram significantly reduce the required computation. Moreover, GPU parallel computation is used to increase the processing speed. The experimental results indicate that our implementation can process a high-resolution WDR image within a second on mobile devices and produce appealing image quality.

Deep Reformulated Laplacian Tone Mapping

Wide dynamic range (WDR) images contain more scene details and contrast when compared to common images. However, it requires tone mapping to process the pixel values in order to display properly. The details of WDR images can diminish during the tone mapping process. In this work, we address the problem by combining a novel reformulated Laplacian pyramid and deep learning. The reformulated Laplacian pyramid always decompose a WDR image into two frequency bands where the low-frequency band is global feature-oriented, and the high-frequency band is local feature-oriented. The reformulation preserves the local features in its original resolution and condenses the global features into a low-resolution image. The generated frequency bands are reconstructed and fine-tuned to output the final tone mapped image that can display on the screen with minimum detail and contrast loss. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art WDR image tone mapping methods. The code is made publicly available at https://github.com/linmc86/Deep-Reformulated-Laplacian-Tone-Mapping.

OAS-Net: Occlusion Aware Sampling Network for Accurate Optical Flow

Optical flow estimation is an essential step for many real-world computer vision tasks. Existing deep networks have achieved satisfactory results by mostly employing a pyramidal coarse-to-fine paradigm, where a key process is to adopt warped target feature based on previous flow prediction to correlate with source feature for building 3D matching cost volume. However, the warping operation can lead to troublesome ghosting problem that results in ambiguity. Moreover, occluded areas are treated equally with non occluded regions in most existing works, which may cause performance degradation. To deal with these challenges, we propose a lightweight yet efficient optical flow network, named OAS-Net (occlusion aware sampling network) for accurate optical flow. First, a new sampling based correlation layer is employed without noisy warping operation. Second, a novel occlusion aware module is presented to make raw cost volume conscious of occluded regions. Third, a shared flow and occlusion awareness decoder is adopted for structure compactness. Experiments on Sintel and KITTI datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed approaches.

Tone Mapping Based on Multi-scale Histogram Synthesis

In this paper, we present a novel tone mapping algorithm that can be used for displaying wide dynamic range (WDR) images on low dynamic range (LDR) devices. The proposed algorithm is mainly motivated by the logarithmic response and local adaptation features of the human visual system (HVS). HVS perceives luminance differently when under different adaptation levels, and therefore our algorithm uses functions built upon different scales to tone map pixels to different values. Functions of large scales are used to maintain image brightness consistency and functions of small scales are used to preserve local detail and contrast. An efficient method using local variance has been proposed to fuse the values of different scales and to remove artifacts. The algorithm utilizes integral images and integral histograms to reduce computation complexity and processing time. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can generate high brightness, good contrast, and appealing images that surpass the performance of many state-of-the-art tone mapping algorithms. WDR FACE: The First Database for Studying Face Detection in Wide Dynamic Range

Currently, face detection approaches focus on facial information by varying specific parameters including pose, occlusion, lighting, background, race, and gender. These studies only utilized the information obtained from low dynamic range images, however, face detection in wide dynamic range (WDR) scenes has received little attention. To our knowledge, there is no publicly available WDR database for face detection research. To facilitate and support future face detection research in the WDR field, we propose the first WDR database for face detection, called WDR FACE, which contains a total of 398 16-bit megapixel grayscale wide dynamic range images collected from 29 subjects. These WDR images (WDRIs) were taken in eight specific WDR scenes. The dynamic range of 90% images surpasses 60,000:1, and that of 70% images exceeds 65,000:1. Furthermore, we show the effect of different face detection procedures on the WDRIs in our database. This is done with 25 different tone mapping operators and five different face detectors. We provide preliminary experimental results of face detection on this unique WDR database.

Image Synthesis with Adversarial Networks: a Comprehensive Survey and Case Studies

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have been extremely successful in various application domains such as computer vision, medicine, and natural language processing. Moreover, transforming an object or person to a desired shape become a well-studied research in the GANs. GANs are powerful models for learning complex distributions to synthesize semantically meaningful samples. However, there is a lack of comprehensive review in this field, especially lack of a collection of GANs loss-variant, evaluation metrics, remedies for diverse image generation, and stable training. Given the current fast GANs development, in this survey, we provide a comprehensive review of adversarial models for image synthesis. We summarize the synthetic image generation methods, and discuss the categories including image-to-image translation, fusion image generation, label-to-image mapping, and text-to-image translation. We organize the literature based on their base models, developed ideas related to architectures, constraints, loss functions, evaluation metrics, and training datasets. We present milestones of adversarial models, review an extensive selection of previous works in various categories, and present insights on the development route from the model-based to data-driven methods. Further, we highlight a range of potential future research directions. One of the unique features of this review is that all software implementations of these GAN methods and datasets have been collected and made available in one place at https://github.com/pshams55/GAN-Case-Study.

Communication and Localization with Extremely Large Lens Antenna Array

Achieving high-rate communication with accurate localization and wireless environment sensing has emerged as an important trend of beyond-fifth and sixth generation cellular systems. Extension of the antenna array to an extremely large scale is a potential technology for achieving such goals. However, the super massive operating antennas significantly increases the computational complexity of the system. Motivated by the inherent advantages of lens antenna arrays in reducing system complexity, we consider communication and localization problems with an \uline{ex}tremely large \uline{lens} antenna array, which we call "ExLens". Since radiative near-field property emerges in the setting, we derive the closed-form array response of the lens antenna array with spherical wave, which includes the array response obtained on the basis of uniform plane wave as a special case. Our derivation result reveals a window effect for energy focusing property of ExLens, which indicates that ExLens has great potential in position sensing and multi-user communication. We also propose an effective method for location and channel parameters estimation, which is able to achieve the localization performance close to the Cramér-Rao lower bound. Finally, we examine the multi-user communication performance of ExLens that serves coexisting near-field and far-field users. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation method and show that ExLens with a minimum mean square error receiver achieves significant spectral efficiency gains and complexity-and-cost reductions compared with a uniform linear array.

DFR: Deep Feature Reconstruction for Unsupervised Anomaly Segmentation

Automatic detecting anomalous regions in images of objects or textures without priors of the anomalies is challenging, especially when the anomalies appear in very small areas of the images, making difficult-to-detect visual variations, such as defects on manufacturing products. This paper proposes an effective unsupervised anomaly segmentation approach that can detect and segment out the anomalies in small and confined regions of images. Concretely, we develop a multi-scale regional feature generator that can generate multiple spatial context-aware representations from pre-trained deep convolutional networks for every subregion of an image. The regional representations not only describe the local characteristics of corresponding regions but also encode their multiple spatial context information, making them discriminative and very beneficial for anomaly detection. Leveraging these descriptive regional features, we then design a deep yet efficient convolutional autoencoder and detect anomalous regions within images via fast feature reconstruction. Our method is simple yet effective and efficient. It advances the state-of-the-art performances on several benchmark datasets and shows great potential for real applications.

Multiscale Mesh Deformation Component Analysis with Attention-based Autoencoders

Deformation component analysis is a fundamental problem in geometry processing and shape understanding. Existing approaches mainly extract deformation components in local regions at a similar scale while deformations of real-world objects are usually distributed in a multi-scale manner. In this paper, we propose a novel method to exact multiscale deformation components automatically with a stacked attention-based autoencoder. The attention mechanism is designed to learn to softly weight multi-scale deformation components in active deformation regions, and the stacked attention-based autoencoder is learned to represent the deformation components at different scales. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, with the multiscale deformation components extracted by our method, the user can edit shapes in a coarse-to-fine fashion which facilitates effective modeling of new shapes.

Weak cosmic censorship conjecture for the novel $4D$ charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole with test scalar field and particle

Recent researches of the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity have attracted great attention. In this paper, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a novel $4D$ charged EGB black hole with test charged scalar field and test charged particle respectively. For the test charged field scattering process, we find that both extremal and near-extremal black holes cannot be overcharged. For the test charged particle injection, to first order, an extremal black hole cannot be overcharged while a near-extremal $4D$ charged EGB black hole can be destroyed. To second order, however, both extremal and near-extremal $4D$ charged EGB black holes can be overcharged for positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant; for negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, an extremal black hole cannot be overcharged and the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture for a near-extremal black hole depends on the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.

Analysis of Regularized Least Squares in Reproducing Kernel Krein Spaces

In this paper, we study the asymptotic properties of regularized least squares with indefinite kernels in reproducing kernel Krein spaces (RKKS). By introducing a bounded hyper-sphere constraint to such non-convex regularized risk minimization problem, we theoretically demonstrate that this problem has a globally optimal solution with a closed form on the sphere, which makes approximation analysis feasible in RKKS. Regarding to the original regularizer induced by the indefinite inner product, we modify traditional error decomposition techniques, prove convergence results for the introduced hypothesis error based on matrix perturbation theory, and derive learning rates of such regularized regression problem in RKKS. Under some conditions, the derived learning rates in RKKS are the same as that in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces (RKHS), which is actually the first work on approximation analysis of regularized learning algorithms in RKKS.

Scannerless non-line-of-sight three dimensional imaging with a 32x32 SPAD array

We develop a scannerless non-line-of-sight three dimensional imaging system based on a commercial 32x32 SPAD camera combined with a 70 ps pulsed laser. In our experiment, 1024 time histograms can be achieved synchronously in 3s with an average time resolution of about 165 ps. The result with filtered back projection shows a discernable reconstruction while the result using virtual wave field demonstrates a better quality similar to the ones created by earlier scanning imaging systems with single pixel SPAD. Comparatively, our system has large potential advantages in frame frequency, power requirements, compactness and robustness. The research results will pave a path for scannerless non-line-of-sight three dimensional imaging application.

Universal Adversarial Attack on Attention and the Resulting Dataset DAmageNet

Adversarial attacks on deep neural networks (DNNs) have been found for several years. However, the existing adversarial attacks have high success rates only when the information of the victim DNN is well-known or could be estimated by the structure similarity or massive queries. In this paper, we propose to Attack on Attention (AoA), a semantic property commonly shared by DNNs. AoA enjoys a significant increase in transferability when the traditional cross entropy loss is replaced with the attention loss. Since AoA alters the loss function only, it could be easily combined with other transferability-enhancement techniques and then achieve SOTA performance. We apply AoA to generate 50000 adversarial samples from ImageNet validation set to defeat many neural networks, and thus name the dataset as DAmageNet. 13 well-trained DNNs are tested on DAmageNet, and all of them have an error rate over 85%. Even with defenses or adversarial training, most models still maintain an error rate over 70% on DAmageNet. DAmageNet is the first universal adversarial dataset. It could be downloaded freely and serve as a benchmark for robustness testing and adversarial training.
