Multiple Superconducting Gaps, Anisotropic Spin Fluctuations and Spin-Orbit Coupling in Iron-Pnictides

This article reviews the NMR and NQR studies on iron-based high-temperature superconductors by the IOP/Okayama group. It was found that the electron pairs in the superconducting state are in the spin-singlet state with multiple fully-opened energy gaps. The antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the normal state are found to be closely correlated with the superconductivity. Also the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic in the spin space, which is different from the case in copper oxide superconductors. This anisotropy originates from the spin-orbit coupling and is an important reflection of the multiple-bands nature of this new class of superconductors.

Particle Acceleration in Kerr-(anti-) de Sitter Black Hole Backgrounds

Recently, Banãdos, Silk and West (BSW) found that the center-of-mass energy of two colliding test particles in the neighborhood of an extreme Kerr black hole could be arbitrarily high when one particle has the critical angular momentum $L_\text{C}$. In their paper, they considered the black holes living in a Minkowski space-time with a zero cosmological constant. In this work, we study this process of particles in the backgrounds of the Kerr black holes living in a space-time with a nonzero cosmological constant. We find that for kerr black holes living in a space-time with a negative cosmological constant (Kerr-anti-de Sitter black holes), this process of particles could happen only if the Kerr-anti-de Sitter black hole is extreme and an additional fine tuning is satisfied; while for kerr black holes living in a space-time with a positive cosmological constant (Kerr-de Sitter black holes), this process of particles could happen no matter the Kerr-de Sitter black hole is extreme or not. We also study the particle collision outside the outer horizon of the Kerr-(anti-) de Sitter black hole in some cases. We find that there is a possibility that we could tune one colliding particle's angular momentum to gain the large center-of-mass energy without increase the particle's energy.

Refined Wall-Crossing, Free Fermions and Crystal Melting

In this paper, we use an M-theory model to conjecture the refined reminiscence of the OSV formula connecting the refined topological string partition function with the refined BPS states partition function for the toric Calabi-Yau threefolds without any compact four cycles. Further, we show how to use the vertex operators in 2d free fermions to reproduce the refined BPS states partition function for the $\mathbb{C}^3$ case and the wall-crossing formulas of the refined BPS states partition function for the resolved conifold and $\mathcal{O}(-2)\oplus\mathcal{O}\rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ cases.

Matrix Model and Refined Wall-Crossing Formula

In this paper, we show how to get matrix models corresponding to the refined BPS states partition functions of $\mathbb{C}^3$, resolved conifold and $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_2$ by inserting the identity operator at a proper position in the fermionic expression of the refined BPS states partition functions.

Evidence for Competition between Superconductivity and Kondo Effect in CeFeAsO0.7F0.3 under High Pressure

We discover a pressure induced quantum phase transition from the superconducting state to the non-superconducting Kondo screened phase associated with a 2% volume collapse in CeFeAsO0.7F0.3 through measurements of high-pressure resistance, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a diamond anvil cell. Our XAS data of Ce-L3 in CeFeAsO0.7F0.3 clearly show a spectral weight transfer from the main line to the satellite line after the transition, demonstrating the formation of the Kondo singlets under pressure in CeFeAsO1-xFx. Our results have revealed a physical picture of a pressure-induce competition between Kondo singlets and BCS singlets in the Ce-pnictide superconductors.

Optimal Designs for Two-Level Factorial Experiments with Binary Response

We consider the problem of obtaining locally D-optimal designs for factorial experiments with qualitative factors at two levels each with binary response. Our focus is primarily on the 2^2 experiment. In this paper, we derive analytic results for some special cases and indicate how to handle the general case. The performance of the uniform design in examined and we show that this design is highly efficient in general. For the general 2^k case we show that the uniform design has a maximin property.

Robustness of Optimal Designs for 2^2 Experiments with Binary Response

We consider an experiment with two qualitative factors at 2 levels each and a binary response, that follows a generalized linear model. In Mandal, Yang and Majumdar (2010) we obtained basic results and characterizations of locally D-optimal designs for special cases. As locally optimal designs depend on the assumed parameter values, a critical issue is the sensitivity of the design to misspecification of these values. In this paper we study the sensitivity theoretically and by simulation, and show that the optimal designs are quite robust. We use the method of cylindrical algebraic decomposition to obtain locally D-optimal designs in the general case.

Efficient Calculation of P-value and Power for Quadratic Form Statistics in Multilocus Association Testing

We address the asymptotic and approximate distributions of a large class of test statistics with quadratic forms used in association studies. The statistics of interest do not necessarily follow a chi-square distribution and take the general form $D=X^T A X$, where $X$ follows the multivariate normal distribution, and $A$ is a general similarity matrix which may or may not be positive semi-definite. We show that $D$ can be written as a linear combination of independent chi-square random variables, whose distribution can be approximated by a chi-square or the difference of two chi-square distributions. In the setting of association testing, our methods are especially useful in two situations. First, for a genome screen, the required significance level is much smaller than 0.05 due to multiple comparisons, and estimation of p-values using permutation procedures is particularly challenging. An efficient and accurate estimation procedure would therefore be useful. Second, in a candidate gene study based on haplotypes when phase is unknown a computationally expensive method-the EM algorithm-is usually required to infer haplotype frequencies. Because the EM algorithm is needed for each permutation, this results in a substantial computational burden, which can be eliminated with our mathematical solution. We assess the practical utility of our method using extensive simulation studies based on two example statistics and apply it to find the sample size needed for a typical candidate gene association study when phase information is not available. Our method can be applied to any quadratic form statistic and therefore should be of general interest.

Fermion Localization and Resonances on A de Sitter Thick Brane

In arXiv:0901.3543, the simplest Yukawa coupling $η\barΨϕχΨ$ was considered for a two-scalar-generated Bloch brane model. Fermionic resonances for both chiralities were obtained, and their appearance is related to branes with internal structure. Inspired on this result, we investigate the localization and resonance spectrum of fermions on a one-scalar-generated $dS$ thick brane with a class of scalar-fermion couplings $η\barΨϕ^kΨ$ with positive odd integer $k$. A set of massive fermionic resonances for both chiralities are obtained when provided large couple constant $η$. We find that the masses and life-times of left and right chiral resonances are almost the same, which demonstrates that it is possible to compose massive Dirac fermions from the left and right chiral resonances. The resonance with lower mass has longer life-time. For a same set of parameters, the number of resonances increases with $k$ and the life-time of the lower level resonance for larger $k$ is much longer than the one for smaller $k$.

Decoupling A and B model in open string theory -- Topological adventures in the world of tadpoles

In this paper we analyze the problem of tadpole cancellation in open topological strings. We prove that the inclusion of unorientable worldsheet diagrams guarantees a consistent decoupling of A and B model for open superstring amplitudes at all genera. This is proven by direct microscopic computation in Super Conformal Field Theory. For the B-model we explicitly calculate one loop amplitudes in terms of analytic Ray-Singer torsions of appropriate vector bundles and obtain that the decoupling corresponds to the cancellation of D-brane and orientifold charges. Local tadpole cancellation on the worldsheet then guarantees the decoupling at all loops. The holomorphic anomaly equations for open topological strings at one loop are also obtained and compared with the results of the Quillen formula.

High pressure study on LaFeAsO with different Tc

We report studies on pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of LaFeAsO, LaFeAs(O0.5F0.5) and LaFeAs(O0.89F0.11) samples. In-situ resistance measurements under high pressure showed that the Tc of these three compounds increases with pressure initially, reaches a maximum value and then decreases with further increasing pressure, although the Tc at ambient pressure are different. The onset Tc of LaFeAsO is ~50 K at 1.5 GPa, which is the highest record in La-based oxypnicited system. The significant change in Tc induced by pressure is attributed to the orbital degeneracy and the electron density of state at the Fermi level.

Feshbach resonances and mesoscopic phase separation near a quantum critical point in multiband FeAs-based superconductors

High Tc superconductivity in FeAs-based multilayers (pnictides), evading temperature decoherence effects in a quantum condensate, is assigned to a Feshbach resonance (called also shape resonance) in the exchange-like interband pairing. The resonance is switched on by tuning the chemical potential at an electronic topological transition (ETT) near a band edge, where the Fermi surface topology of one of the subbands changes from 1D to 2D topology. We show that the tuning is realized by changing i) the misfit strain between the superconducting planes and the spacers ii) the charge density and iii) the disorder. The system is at the verge of a catastrophe i.e. near a structural and magnetic phase transition associated with the stripes (analogous to the 1/8 stripe phase in cuprates) order to disorder phase transition. Fine tuning of both the chemical potential and the disorder pushes the critical temperature Ts of this phase transition to zero giving a quantum critical point. Here the quantum lattice and magnetic fluctuations promote the Feshbach resonance of the exchange-like anisotropic pairing. This superconducting phase that resists to the attacks of temperature is shown to be controlled by the interplay of the hopping energy between stripes and the quantum fluctuations. The superconducting gaps in the multiple Fermi surface spots reported by the recent ARPES experiment of D. V. Evtushinsky et al. arXiv:0809.4455 are shown to support the Feshbach scenario.

The effect of internal pressure on the tetragonal to monoclinic structural phase transition in ReOFeAs: the case of NdOFeAs

We report the temperature dependent x-ray powder diffraction of the quaternary compound NdOFeAs (also called NdFeAsO) in the range between 300 K and 95 K. We have detected the structural phase transition from the tetragonal phase, with P4/nmm space group, to the orthorhombic or monoclinic phase, with Cmma or P112/a1 (or P2/c) space group, over a broad temperature range from 150 K to 120 K, centered at T0 ~137 K. Therefore the temperature of this structural phase transition is strongly reduced, by about ~30K, by increasing the internal chemical pressure going from LaOFeAs to NdOFeAs. In contrast the superconducting critical temperature increases from 27 K to 51 K going from LaOFeAs to NdOFeAs doped samples. This result shows that the normal striped orthorhombic Cmma phase competes with the superconducting tetragonal phase. Therefore by controlling the internal chemical pressure in new materials it should be possible to push toward zero the critical temperature T0 of the structural phase transition, giving the striped phase, in order to get superconductors with higher Tc.

Lattice and Magnetic structures of PrFeAsO, PrFeAsO0.85F0.15 and PrFeAsO0.85

We use powder neutron diffraction to study the spin and lattice structures of polycrystalline samples of nonsuperconducting PrFeAsO and superconducting PrFeAsO0.85F0.15 and PrFeAsO0.85. We find that PrFeAsO exhibits an abrupt structural phase transitions at 153 K, followed by static long range antiferromagnetic order at 127 K. Both the structural distortion and magnetic order are identical to other rare-earth oxypnictides. Electron-doping the system with either Fluorine or oxygen deficiency suppresses the structural distortion and static long range antiferromagnetic order, therefore placing these materials into the same class of FeAs-based superconductors.

Point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy of NdFeAsO_0.85

The newly discovered oxypnictide family of superconductors show very high critical temperatures of up to 55K. Whilst there is growing evidence that suggests a nodal order parameter, point contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy can provide crucial information such as the gap value and possibly the number of energy gaps involved. For the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO0.85 with a Tc of 45.5K, we show that there is clearly a gap value at 4.2K that is of the order of 7meV, consistent with previous studies on oxypnictides with lower Tc. Additionally, taking the spectra as a function of gold tip contact pressure reveals important changes in the spectra which may be indicative of more complex physics underlying this structure.

Common Features in Electronic Structure of the Fe-Based Layered Superconductors from Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting LaOFeAs parent compound and various superconducting R(O1-xFx)FeAs (R=La, Ce and Pr) compounds. We found that the parent LaOFeAs compound shows a metallic character. Through extensive measurements, we have identified several common features in the electronic structure of these Fe-based compounds: (1). 0.2 eV feature in the valence band; (2). A universal 13~16 meV feature; (3). A clear Fermi cutoff showing zero leading-edge shift in the superconducting state;(4). Lack of superconducting coherence peak(s); (5). Near EF spectral weight suppression with decreasing temperature. These universal features can provide important information about band structure, superconducting gap and pseudogap in these Fe-based materials.
