Granular Segregation Mechanisms by Cyclic Shear

We present an X-ray tomography study of the segregation mechanisms of tracer particles in a three-dimensional cyclically sheared bi-disperse granular medium. Big tracers are dragged by convection to rise to the top surface and then remain trapped there due to the small downward convection cross-section, which leads to segregation. Additionally, we also find that the local structural up-down asymmetry due to arching effect around big tracers will induce the tracers to have a net upward displacement against its smaller neighbors, which is another mechanism for segregation.

Weak-to-strong transition of quantum measurement in a trapped-ion system

Quantum measurement remains a puzzle through its stormy history from the birth of quantum mechanics to state-of-the-art quantum technologies. Two complementary measurement schemes have been widely investigated in a variety of quantum systems: von Neumann's projective 'strong' measurement and Aharonov's weak measurement. Here, we report the observation of a weak-to-strong measurement transition in a single trapped $40Ca^+$ ion system. The transition is realized by tuning the interaction strength between the ion's internal electronic state and its vibrational motion, which play the roles of the measured system and the measuring pointer, respectively. By pre- and post-selecting the internal state, a pointer state composed of two of the ion's motional wavepackets is obtained, and its central-position shift, which corresponds to the measurement outcome, demonstrates the transition from the weak-value asymptotes to the expected-value asymptotes. Quantitatively, the weak-to-strong measurement transition is characterized by a universal transition factor $e^{-Γ^2}$, where $Γ$ is a dimensionless parameter related to the system-apparatus coupling. This transition, which continuously connects weak measurements and strong measurements, may open new experimental possibilities to test quantum foundations and prompt us to re-examine and improve the measurement schemes of related quantum technologies.

Do All Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections Have A Magnetic Flux Rope Structure Near 1 AU?

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) often consist of a shock wave, sheath region, and ejecta region. The ejecta regions are divided into two broad classes: magnetic clouds (MC) that exhibit the characteristics of magnetic flux ropes and non-magnetic clouds (NMC) that do not. As CMEs result from eruption of magnetic flux ropes, it is important to answer why NMCs do not have the flux rope features. One claims that NMCs lose their original flux rope features due to the interactions between ICMEs or ICMEs and other large scale structures during their transit in the heliosphere. The other attributes this phenomenon to the geometric selection effect, i.e., when an ICME has its nose (flank, including leg and non-leg flanks) pass through the observing spacecraft, the MC (NMC) features will be detected along the spacecraft trajectory within the ejecta. In this Letter, we examine which explanation is more reasonable through the geometric properties of ICMEs. If the selection effect leads to different ejecta types, MCs should have narrower sheath region compared to NMCs from the statistical point of view, which is confirmed by our statistics. Besides, we find that NMCs have the similar size in solar cycles 23 and 24, and NMCs are smaller than MCs in cycle 23 but larger than MCs in cycle 24. This suggests that most NMCs have their leg flank pass through the spacecraft. Our geometric analyses support that all ICMEs should have a magnetic flux rope structure near 1 AU.

Connecting shear localization with the long-range correlated polarized stress fields in granular materials

One long-lasting puzzle in amorphous solids is shear localization, where local plastic deformation involves cooperative particle rearrangements in small regions of a few inter-particle distances, self-organizing into shear bands and eventually leading to the material failure. Understanding the connection between the structure and dynamics of amorphous solids is essential in physics, material sciences, geotechnical and civil engineering, and geophysics. Here we show a deep connection between shear localization and the intrinsic structures of internal stresses in an isotropically jammed granular material subject to shear. Specifically, we find strong (anti)correlations between the micro shear bands and two polarized stress fields along two directions of maximal shear. By exploring the tensorial characteristics and the rotational symmetry of force network, we reveal that such profound connection is a result of symmetry breaking by shear. Finally, we provide the solid experimental evidence of long-range correlated inherent shear stress in an isotropically jammed granular system.

The TianQin project: current progress on science and technology

TianQin is a planned space-based gravitational wave (GW) observatory consisting of three earth orbiting satellites with an orbital radius of about $10^5~{\rm km}$. The satellites will form a equilateral triangle constellation the plane of which is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic plane. TianQin aims to detect GWs between $10^{-4}~{\rm Hz}$ and $1~{\rm Hz}$ that can be generated by a wide variety of important astrophysical and cosmological sources, including the inspiral of Galactic ultra-compact binaries, the inspiral of stellar-mass black hole binaries, extreme mass ratio inspirals, the merger of massive black hole binaries, and possibly the energetic processes in the very early universe or exotic sources such as cosmic strings. In order to start science operations around 2035, a roadmap called the 0123 plan is being used to bring the key technologies of TianQin to maturity, supported by the construction of a series of research facilities on the ground. Two major projects of the 0123 plan are being carried out. In this process, the team has created a new generation $17~{\rm cm}$ single-body hollow corner-cube retro-reflector which has been launched with the QueQiao satellite on 21 May 2018; a new laser ranging station equipped with a $1.2~{\rm m}$ telescope has been constructed and the station has successfully ranged to all the five retro-reflectors on the Moon; and the TianQin-1 experimental satellite has been launched on 20 December 2019 and the first round result shows that the satellite has exceeded all of its mission requirements.

Level statistics and Anderson delocalization in two-dimensional granular materials

Contrary to the theoretical predictions that all waves in two-dimensional disordered materials are localized, Anderson localization is observed only for sufficiently high frequencies in an isotropically jammed two-dimensional disordered granular packing of photoelastic disks. More specifically, we have performed an experiment in analyzing the level statistics of normal mode vibrations. We observe delocalized modes in the low-frequency boson-peak regime and localized modes in the high frequency regime with the crossover frequency just below the Debye frequency. We find that the level-distance distribution obeys Gaussian-Orthogonal-Ensemble (GOE) statistics, i.e. Wigner-Dyson distribution, in the boson-peak regime, whereas those in the high-frequency regime Poisson statistics is observed. The scenario is found to coincide with that of harmonic vibrational excitations in three-dimensional disordered solids.

Spin-crossover induced ferromagnetism and layer stacking-order change in pressurized 2D antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$

High-pressure properties of MnPS$_3$ are investigated by using the hybrid functional, we report a spin-crossover pressure of 35 GPa consisting with experimental observation (30 GPa), less than half of existing report (63 GPa) using the Hubbard U correction. Interestingly, a spin-crossover induced antiferromagnetism-to-ferromagnetism transition combined with stacking-order change from monoclinic to rhombohedral are founded, and the ferromagnetism origins from the partially occupied $t_{2g}$ orbitals. Different from previous understanding, the Mott metal-insulator transition of MnPS$_3$ does not occur simultaneously with the spin-crossover but in pressurized low-spin phase.

Recurring Homologous Solar Eruptions in NOAA AR 11429

We present the study of three homologous solar eruptions from NOAA active region (AR) 11429 over four days. This large and complex AR divided into two relatively simple sub-regions: northeast (NE) and southwest (SW). Recurrent eruptions occurred from the SW sub-region over different evolutionary phases, which provided a unique opportunity to isolate the physical processes responsible for solar eruptions. Persistent shearing and convergence of opposite magnetic polarities led to continuous flux cancellation along the SW polarity inversion line (PIL). A filament persistently lying along the SW-PIL was observed to survive each eruption, which suggests the partial eruption of the magnetic system. Further, following the first and second eruptions, a sigmoidal magnetic structure of similar morphology was reformed along the SW-PIL. The photospheric motion of magnetic flux continuously injected and stored the negative helicity in the partially erupted magnetic system and built up the magnetic free energy for the successive eruptions. These results suggest that the shearing motion and magnetic flux cancellation of opposite fluxes were: (1) the dominant factor, irrespective of the evolutionary phase, that contributed to the recurrent homologous eruption, and (2) the key processes of forming the erupting structure, likely a magnetic flux rope, and its long-lasting continuation results in reformation of identical erupting structure. The study also finds that similar magnetic topology could result in the magnetic reconnection at the same location, and such flares during the precursor phase would help in the eruption by decreasing the constraint of overlying magnetic field.

Attentive Fusion Enhanced Audio-Visual Encoding for Transformer Based Robust Speech Recognition

Audio-visual information fusion enables a performance improvement in speech recognition performed in complex acoustic scenarios, e.g., noisy environments. It is required to explore an effective audio-visual fusion strategy for audiovisual alignment and modality reliability. Different from the previous end-to-end approaches where the audio-visual fusion is performed after encoding each modality, in this paper we propose to integrate an attentive fusion block into the encoding process. It is shown that the proposed audio-visual fusion method in the encoder module can enrich audio-visual representations, as the relevance between the two modalities is leveraged. In line with the transformer-based architecture, we implement the embedded fusion block using a multi-head attention based audiovisual fusion with one-way or two-way interactions. The proposed method can sufficiently combine the two streams and weaken the over-reliance on the audio modality. Experiments on the LRS3-TED dataset demonstrate that the proposed method can increase the recognition rate by 0.55%, 4.51% and 4.61% on average under the clean, seen and unseen noise conditions, respectively, compared to the state-of-the-art approach.

The Steiner Wiener index of trees with a given segment sequence

The Steiner distance of vertices in a set $S$ is the minimum size of a connected subgraph that contain these vertices. The sum of the Steiner distances over all sets $S$ of cardinality $k$ is called the Steiner $k$-Wiener index and studied as the natural generalization of the famous Wiener index in chemical graph theory. In this paper we study the extremal structures, among trees with a given segment sequence, that maximize or minimize the Steiner $k$-Wiener index. The same extremal problems are also considered for trees with a given number of segments.

Wireless Performance Evaluation of Building Layouts: Closed-Form Computation of Figures of Merit

This paper presents a part of our ground-breaking work on evaluation of buildings in terms of wireless friendliness in the building-design stage. The main goal is to devise construction practices that provide for a good performance of wireless networks deployed in buildings. In this paper, the interference gain (IG) and power gain (PG) are defined as two figures of merit (FoM) of the wireless performance of buildings. The FoMs bridge the gap between building design and wireless communications industries. An approach to derive exact closed-form equations for these FoMs is proposed for the first time. The derived analytic expressions facilitate straightforward and more computationally efficient numerical evaluation of the proposed FoMs as compared to Monte Carlo simulations for well-known indoor propagation models. It is shown that the derived closed-form expression can be readily employed to evaluate the impact of building properties, such as the sizes and the aspect ratios (ARs) of rooms, on the wireless performance. The proposed approach sheds light to architects on evaluation and design of wireless-friendly building layouts.

Eruption of Solar Magnetic Flux Ropes Caused by Flux Feeding

Large-scale solar eruptions are believed to have a magnetic flux rope as the core structure. However, it remains elusive as to how the flux rope builds up and what triggers its eruption. Recent observations found that a prominence erupted following multiple episodes of "flux feeding". During each episode, a chromospheric fibril rose and merged with the prominence lying above. In this letter, we carried out 2.5-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical simulations to investigate whether the flux-feeding mechanism can explain such an eruption. The simulations demonstrate that the discrete emergence of small flux ropes can initiate eruptions by feeding axial flux into the preexistent flux rope until its total axial flux reaches a critical value. The onset of the eruption is dominated by an ideal MHD process. Our simulation results corroborate that the flux feeding is a viable mechanism to cause the eruption of solar magnetic flux ropes.

Structural Landmarking and Interaction Modelling: on Resolution Dilemmas in Graph Classification

Graph neural networks are promising architecture for learning and inference with graph-structured data. Yet difficulties in modelling the ``parts'' and their ``interactions'' still persist in terms of graph classification, where graph-level representations are usually obtained by squeezing the whole graph into a single vector through graph pooling. From complex systems point of view, mixing all the parts of a system together can affect both model interpretability and predictive performance, because properties of a complex system arise largely from the interaction among its components. We analyze the intrinsic difficulty in graph classification under the unified concept of ``resolution dilemmas'' with learning theoretic recovery guarantees, and propose ``SLIM'', an inductive neural network model for Structural Landmarking and Interaction Modelling. It turns out, that by solving the resolution dilemmas, and leveraging explicit interacting relation between component parts of a graph to explain its complexity, SLIM is more interpretable, accurate, and offers new insight in graph representation learning.

FastDrain: Removing Page Victimization Overheads in NVMe Storage Stack

Host-side page victimizations can easily overflow the SSD internal buffer, which interferes I/O services of diverse user applications thereby degrading user-level experiences. To address this, we propose FastDrain, a co-design of OS kernel and flash firmware to avoid the buffer overflow, caused by page victimizations. Specifically, FastDrain can detect a triggering point where a near-future page victimization introduces an overflow of the SSD internal buffer. Our new flash firmware then speculatively scrubs the buffer space to accommodate the requests caused by the page victimization. In parallel, our new OS kernel design controls the traffic of page victimizations by considering the target device buffer status, which can further reduce the risk of buffer overflow. To secure more buffer spaces, we also design a latency-aware FTL, which dumps the dirty data only to the fast flash pages. Our evaluation results reveal that FastDrain reduces the 99th response time of user applications by 84%, compared to a conventional system.

ZnG: Architecting GPU Multi-Processors with New Flash for Scalable Data Analysis

We propose ZnG, a new GPU-SSD integrated architecture, which can maximize the memory capacity in a GPU and address performance penalties imposed by an SSD. Specifically, ZnG replaces all GPU internal DRAMs with an ultra-low-latency SSD to maximize the GPU memory capacity. ZnG further removes performance bottleneck of the SSD by replacing its flash channels with a high-throughput flash network and integrating SSD firmware in the GPU's MMU to reap the benefits of hardware accelerations. Although flash arrays within the SSD can deliver high accumulated bandwidth, only a small fraction of such bandwidth can be utilized by GPU's memory requests due to mismatches of their access granularity. To address this, ZnG employs a large L2 cache and flash registers to buffer the memory requests. Our evaluation results indicate that ZnG can achieve 7.5x higher performance than prior work.

A Re-visit of the Popularity Baseline in Recommender Systems

Popularity is often included in experimental evaluation to provide a reference performance for a recommendation task. To understand how popularity baseline is defined and evaluated, we sample 12 papers from top-tier conferences including KDD, WWW, SIGIR, and RecSys, and 6 open source toolkits. We note that the widely adopted MostPop baseline simply ranks items based on the number of interactions in the training data. We argue that the current evaluation of popularity (i) does not reflect the popular items at the time when a user interacts with the system, and (ii) may recommend items released after a user's last interaction with the system. On the widely used MovieLens dataset, we show that the performance of popularity could be significantly improved by 70% or more, if we consider the popular items at the time point when a user interacts with the system. We further show that, on MovieLens dataset, the users having lower tendencies on movies tend to follow the crowd and rate more popular movies. Movie lovers who rate a large number of movies, rate movies based on their own preferences and interests. Through this study, we call for a re-visit of the popularity baseline in recommender system to better reflect its effectiveness.

Applying configurational complexity to the 2D Ruddlesden-Popper crystal structure

The 2D layered Ruddlesden-Popper crystal structure can host a broad range of functionally important behaviors. Here we establish extraordinary configurational disorder in a two dimensional layered Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) structure using entropy stabilization assisted synthesis. A protype A2CuO4 RP cuprate oxide with five components (La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) on the A-site sublattice is designed and fabricated into epitaxial single crystal films using pulsed laser deposition. By comparing (La0.2Pr0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2Eu0.2)2CuO4 crystals grown under identical conditions but different substrates, it is found that heteroepitaxial strain plays an important role in crystal phase formation. When grown on a near lattice matched substrate, the high entropy oxide film features a T'-type RP structure with uniform A-site cation mixing and square-planar CuO4 units, however, growing under strong compressive strain results in a single crystal non-RP cubic phase consistent with a CuX2O4 spinel structure. These observations are made with a range of combined characterizations using X-ray diffraction, atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Designing configurational complexity and moving between 2D layered RP and 3D cubic crystal structures in this class of cuprate materials opens many opportunities for new design strategies related to magnetoresistance, unconventional superconductivity, ferroelectricity, catalysis, and ion transport.

A Convolutional Neural Network with Parallel Multi-Scale Spatial Pooling to Detect Temporal Changes in SAR Images

In synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image change detection, it is quite challenging to exploit the changing information from the noisy difference image subject to the speckle. In this paper, we propose a multi-scale spatial pooling (MSSP) network to exploit the changed information from the noisy difference image. Being different from the traditional convolutional network with only mono-scale pooling kernels, in the proposed method, multi-scale pooling kernels are equipped in a convolutional network to exploit the spatial context information on changed regions from the difference image. Furthermore, to verify the generalization of the proposed method, we apply our proposed method to the cross-dataset bitemporal SAR image change detection, where the MSSP network (MSSP-Net) is trained on a dataset and then applied to an unknown testing dataset. We compare the proposed method with other state-of-arts and the comparisons are performed on four challenging datasets of bitemporal SAR images. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method obtains comparable results with S-PCA-Net on YR-A and YR-B dataset and outperforms other state-of-art methods, especially on the Sendai-A and Sendai-B datasets with more complex scenes. More important, MSSP-Net is more efficient than S-PCA-Net and convolutional neural networks (CNN) with less executing time in both training and testing phases.
