Binarizing Sparse Convolutional Networks for Efficient Point Cloud Analysis

In this paper, we propose binary sparse convolutional networks called BSC-Net for efficient point cloud analysis. We empirically observe that sparse convolution operation causes larger quantization errors than standard convolution. However, conventional network quantization methods directly binarize the weights and activations in sparse convolution, resulting in performance drop due to the significant quantization loss. On the contrary, we search the optimal subset of convolution operation that activates the sparse convolution at various locations for quantization error alleviation, and the performance gap between real-valued and binary sparse convolutional networks is closed without complexity overhead. Specifically, we first present the shifted sparse convolution that fuses the information in the receptive field for the active sites that match the pre-defined positions. Then we employ the differentiable search strategies to discover the optimal opsitions for active site matching in the shifted sparse convolution, and the quantization errors are significantly alleviated for efficient point cloud analysis. For fair evaluation of the proposed method, we empirically select the recently advances that are beneficial for sparse convolution network binarization to construct a strong baseline. The experimental results on Scan-Net and NYU Depth v2 show that our BSC-Net achieves significant improvement upon our srtong baseline and outperforms the state-of-the-art network binarization methods by a remarkable margin without additional computation overhead for binarizing sparse convolutional networks.

Efficient Meshy Neural Fields for Animatable Human Avatars

Efficiently digitizing high-fidelity animatable human avatars from videos is a challenging and active research topic. Recent volume rendering-based neural representations open a new way for human digitization with their friendly usability and photo-realistic reconstruction quality. However, they are inefficient for long optimization times and slow inference speed; their implicit nature results in entangled geometry, materials, and dynamics of humans, which are hard to edit afterward. Such drawbacks prevent their direct applicability to downstream applications, especially the prominent rasterization-based graphic ones. We present EMA, a method that Efficiently learns Meshy neural fields to reconstruct animatable human Avatars. It jointly optimizes explicit triangular canonical mesh, spatial-varying material, and motion dynamics, via inverse rendering in an end-to-end fashion. Each above component is derived from separate neural fields, relaxing the requirement of a template, or rigging. The mesh representation is highly compatible with the efficient rasterization-based renderer, thus our method only takes about an hour of training and can render in real-time. Moreover, only minutes of optimization is enough for plausible reconstruction results. The disentanglement of meshes enables direct downstream applications. Extensive experiments illustrate the very competitive performance and significant speed boost against previous methods. We also showcase applications including novel pose synthesis, material editing, and relighting. The project page: https://xk-huang.github.io/ema/.

Fat Pointers for Temporal Memory Safety of C

Temporal memory safety bugs, especially use-after-free and double free bugs, pose a major security threat to C programs. Real-world exploits utilizing these bugs enable attackers to read and write arbitrary memory locations, causing disastrous violations of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Many previous solutions retrofit temporal memory safety to C, but they all either incur high performance overhead and/or miss detecting certain types of temporal memory safety bugs. In this paper, we propose a temporal memory safety solution that is both efficient and comprehensive. Specifically, we extend Checked C, a spatially-safe extension to C, with temporally-safe pointers. These are implemented by combining two techniques: fat pointers and dynamic key-lock checks. We show that the fat-pointer solution significantly improves running time and memory overhead compared to the disjoint-metadata approach that provides the same level of protection. With empirical program data and hands-on experience porting real-world applications, we also show that our solution is practical in terms of backward compatibility -- one of the major complaints about fat pointers.

Precise Facial Landmark Detection by Reference Heatmap Transformer

Most facial landmark detection methods predict landmarks by mapping the input facial appearance features to landmark heatmaps and have achieved promising results. However, when the face image is suffering from large poses, heavy occlusions and complicated illuminations, they cannot learn discriminative feature representations and effective facial shape constraints, nor can they accurately predict the value of each element in the landmark heatmap, limiting their detection accuracy. To address this problem, we propose a novel Reference Heatmap Transformer (RHT) by introducing reference heatmap information for more precise facial landmark detection. The proposed RHT consists of a Soft Transformation Module (STM) and a Hard Transformation Module (HTM), which can cooperate with each other to encourage the accurate transformation of the reference heatmap information and facial shape constraints. Then, a Multi-Scale Feature Fusion Module (MSFFM) is proposed to fuse the transformed heatmap features and the semantic features learned from the original face images to enhance feature representations for producing more accurate target heatmaps. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to explore how to enhance facial landmark detection by transforming the reference heatmap information. The experimental results from challenging benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in the literature.

Experimental demonstration of separating the waveparticle duality of a single photon with the quantum Cheshire cat

As a fundamental characteristic of physical entities, waveparticle duality describes whether a microscopic entity exhibits wave or particle attributes depending on the specific experimental setup. This assumption is premised on the notion that physical properties are inseparable from the objective carrier. However, after the concept of the quantum Cheshire cats was proposed, which makes the separation of physical attributes from the entity possible, the premise no longer holds. Furthermore, an experimental demonstration of the separation of the wave and particle attributes inspired by this scenario remains scarce. In this work, we experimentally separated the wave and particle attributes of a single photon by exploiting the quantum Cheshire cat concept for the first time. By applying a weak disturbance to the evolution of the system, we achieve an effect similar to the quantum Cheshire cat and demonstrated the separation of the wave and particle attributes via the extraction of weak values. Our work provides a new perspective for the indepth understanding of waveparticle duality and promotes the application of weak measurements in fundamentals of quantum mechanics.

Bort: Towards Explainable Neural Networks with Bounded Orthogonal Constraint

Deep learning has revolutionized human society, yet the black-box nature of deep neural networks hinders further application to reliability-demanded industries. In the attempt to unpack them, many works observe or impact internal variables to improve the comprehensibility and invertibility of the black-box models. However, existing methods rely on intuitive assumptions and lack mathematical guarantees. To bridge this gap, we introduce Bort, an optimizer for improving model explainability with boundedness and orthogonality constraints on model parameters, derived from the sufficient conditions of model comprehensibility and invertibility. We perform reconstruction and backtracking on the model representations optimized by Bort and observe a clear improvement in model explainability. Based on Bort, we are able to synthesize explainable adversarial samples without additional parameters and training. Surprisingly, we find Bort constantly improves the classification accuracy of various architectures including ResNet and DeiT on MNIST, CIFAR-10, and ImageNet. Code: https://github.com/zbr17/Bort.

A convergence analysis of a structure-preserving gradient flow method for the all-electron Kohn-Sham model

In [Dai et al, Multi. Model. Simul., 2020], a structure-preserving gradient flow method was proposed for the ground state calculation in Kohn-Sham density functional theory, based on which a linearized method was developed in [Hu, et al, EAJAM, accepted] for further improving the numerical efficiency. In this paper, a complete convergence analysis is delivered for such a linearized method for the all-electron Kohn-Sham model. Temporally, the convergence, the asymptotic stability, as well as the structure-preserving property of the linearized numerical scheme in the method is discussed following previous works, while spatially, the convergence of the h-adaptive mesh method is demonstrated following [Chen et al, Multi. Model. Simul., 2014], with a key study on the boundedness of the Kohn-Sham potential for the all-electron Kohn-Sham model. Numerical examples confirm the theoretical results very well.

Unleashing Text-to-Image Diffusion Models for Visual Perception

Diffusion models (DMs) have become the new trend of generative models and have demonstrated a powerful ability of conditional synthesis. Among those, text-to-image diffusion models pre-trained on large-scale image-text pairs are highly controllable by customizable prompts. Unlike the unconditional generative models that focus on low-level attributes and details, text-to-image diffusion models contain more high-level knowledge thanks to the vision-language pre-training. In this paper, we propose VPD (Visual Perception with a pre-trained Diffusion model), a new framework that exploits the semantic information of a pre-trained text-to-image diffusion model in visual perception tasks. Instead of using the pre-trained denoising autoencoder in a diffusion-based pipeline, we simply use it as a backbone and aim to study how to take full advantage of the learned knowledge. Specifically, we prompt the denoising decoder with proper textual inputs and refine the text features with an adapter, leading to a better alignment to the pre-trained stage and making the visual contents interact with the text prompts. We also propose to utilize the cross-attention maps between the visual features and the text features to provide explicit guidance. Compared with other pre-training methods, we show that vision-language pre-trained diffusion models can be faster adapted to downstream visual perception tasks using the proposed VPD. Extensive experiments on semantic segmentation, referring image segmentation and depth estimation demonstrates the effectiveness of our method. Notably, VPD attains 0.254 RMSE on NYUv2 depth estimation and 73.3% oIoU on RefCOCO-val referring image segmentation, establishing new records on these two benchmarks. Tri-Perspective View for Vision-Based 3D Semantic Occupancy Prediction

Modern methods for vision-centric autonomous driving perception widely adopt the bird's-eye-view (BEV) representation to describe a 3D scene. Despite its better efficiency than voxel representation, it has difficulty describing the fine-grained 3D structure of a scene with a single plane. To address this, we propose a tri-perspective view (TPV) representation which accompanies BEV with two additional perpendicular planes. We model each point in the 3D space by summing its projected features on the three planes. To lift image features to the 3D TPV space, we further propose a transformer-based TPV encoder (TPVFormer) to obtain the TPV features effectively. We employ the attention mechanism to aggregate the image features corresponding to each query in each TPV plane. Experiments show that our model trained with sparse supervision effectively predicts the semantic occupancy for all voxels. We demonstrate for the first time that using only camera inputs can achieve comparable performance with LiDAR-based methods on the LiDAR segmentation task on nuScenes. How Robust is GPT-3.5 to Predecessors? A Comprehensive Study on Language Understanding Tasks

The GPT-3.5 models have demonstrated impressive performance in various Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks, showcasing their strong understanding and reasoning capabilities. However, their robustness and abilities to handle various complexities of the open world have yet to be explored, which is especially crucial in assessing the stability of models and is a key aspect of trustworthy AI. In this study, we perform a comprehensive experimental analysis of GPT-3.5, exploring its robustness using 21 datasets (about 116K test samples) with 66 text transformations from TextFlint that cover 9 popular Natural Language Understanding (NLU) tasks. Our findings indicate that while GPT-3.5 outperforms existing fine-tuned models on some tasks, it still encounters significant robustness degradation, such as its average performance dropping by up to 35.74\% and 43.59\% in natural language inference and sentiment analysis tasks, respectively. We also show that GPT-3.5 faces some specific robustness challenges, including robustness instability, prompt sensitivity, and number sensitivity. These insights are valuable for understanding its limitations and guiding future research in addressing these challenges to enhance GPT-3.5's overall performance and generalization abilities.

Protecting quantum entanglement between error-corrected logical qubits

Entanglement represents one of the most important conceptual advances in physics during the last century and is also one of the most essential resources in quantum information science. However, entanglement is fragile and its potential advantages in applications are hindered by decoherence in practice. Here, we experimentally realize entangled logical qubits (ELQ) with a bosonic quantum module by encoding quantum information into spatially separated microwave modes. The entanglement is protected by repetitive quantum error correction, and the coherence time of the purified ELQ via error detection is improved by 45$\%$ compared with the unprotected ELQ and exceeds that of the entangled physical qubits. In addition, violation of the Bell inequality by logical qubits is demonstrated for the first time with the measured Bell signal B=2.250$\pm$0.019 after purification, surpassing the classical bound by 13 standard deviations. The protected ELQ could be applied in future explorations of quantum foundations and applications of quantum networks.

A Flexible Multi-view Multi-modal Imaging System for Outdoor Scenes

Multi-view imaging systems enable uniform coverage of 3D space and reduce the impact of occlusion, which is beneficial for 3D object detection and tracking accuracy. However, existing imaging systems built with multi-view cameras or depth sensors are limited by the small applicable scene and complicated composition. In this paper, we propose a wireless multi-view multi-modal 3D imaging system generally applicable to large outdoor scenes, which consists of a master node and several slave nodes. Multiple spatially distributed slave nodes equipped with cameras and LiDARs are connected to form a wireless sensor network. While providing flexibility and scalability, the system applies automatic spatio-temporal calibration techniques to obtain accurate 3D multi-view multi-modal data. This system is the first imaging system that integrates mutli-view RGB cameras and LiDARs in large outdoor scenes among existing 3D imaging systems. We perform point clouds based 3D object detection and long-term tracking using the 3D imaging dataset collected by this system. The experimental results show that multi-view point clouds greatly improve 3D object detection and tracking accuracy regardless of complex and various outdoor environments.

Tell Model Where to Attend: Improving Interpretability of Aspect-Based Sentiment Classification via Small Explanation Annotations

Gradient-based explanation methods play an important role in the field of interpreting complex deep neural networks for NLP models. However, the existing work has shown that the gradients of a model are unstable and easily manipulable, which impacts the model's reliability largely. According to our preliminary analyses, we also find the interpretability of gradient-based methods is limited for complex tasks, such as aspect-based sentiment classification (ABSC). In this paper, we propose an \textbf{I}nterpretation-\textbf{E}nhanced \textbf{G}radient-based framework for \textbf{A}BSC via a small number of explanation annotations, namely \texttt{IEGA}. Particularly, we first calculate the word-level saliency map based on gradients to measure the importance of the words in the sentence towards the given aspect. Then, we design a gradient correction module to enhance the model's attention on the correct parts (e.g., opinion words). Our model is model agnostic and task agnostic so that it can be integrated into the existing ABSC methods or other tasks. Comprehensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets show that our \texttt{IEGA} can improve not only the interpretability of the model but also the performance and robustness.

Feature Decomposition for Reducing Negative Transfer: A Novel Multi-task Learning Method for Recommender System

In recent years, thanks to the rapid development of deep learning (DL), DL-based multi-task learning (MTL) has made significant progress, and it has been successfully applied to recommendation systems (RS). However, in a recommender system, the correlations among the involved tasks are complex. Therefore, the existing MTL models designed for RS suffer from negative transfer to different degrees, which will injure optimization in MTL. We find that the root cause of negative transfer is feature redundancy that features learned for different tasks interfere with each other. To alleviate the issue of negative transfer, we propose a novel multi-task learning method termed Feature Decomposition Network (FDN). The key idea of the proposed FDN is reducing the phenomenon of feature redundancy by explicitly decomposing features into task-specific features and task-shared features with carefully designed constraints. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on two datasets, a synthetic dataset and a public datasets (i.e., Ali-CCP). Experimental results show that our proposed FDN can outperform the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods by a noticeable margin.

Regularized Integrals on Elliptic Curves and Holomorphic Anomaly Equations

We derive residue formulas for the regularized integrals (introduced by Li-Zhou) on configuration spaces of elliptic curves. Based on these formulas, we prove that the regularized integrals satisfy holomorphic anomaly equations, providing a mathematical formulation of the so-called contact term singularities. We also discuss residue formulas for the ordered $A$-cycle integrals and establish their relations with those for the regularized integrals.

A Multi-task Multi-stage Transitional Training Framework for Neural Chat Translation

Neural chat translation (NCT) aims to translate a cross-lingual chat between speakers of different languages. Existing context-aware NMT models cannot achieve satisfactory performances due to the following inherent problems: 1) limited resources of annotated bilingual dialogues; 2) the neglect of modelling conversational properties; 3) training discrepancy between different stages. To address these issues, in this paper, we propose a multi-task multi-stage transitional (MMT) training framework, where an NCT model is trained using the bilingual chat translation dataset and additional monolingual dialogues. We elaborately design two auxiliary tasks, namely utterance discrimination and speaker discrimination, to introduce the modelling of dialogue coherence and speaker characteristic into the NCT model. The training process consists of three stages: 1) sentence-level pre-training on large-scale parallel corpus; 2) intermediate training with auxiliary tasks using additional monolingual dialogues; 3) context-aware fine-tuning with gradual transition. Particularly, the second stage serves as an intermediate phase that alleviates the training discrepancy between the pre-training and fine-tuning stages. Moreover, to make the stage transition smoother, we train the NCT model using a gradual transition strategy, i.e., gradually transiting from using monolingual to bilingual dialogues. Extensive experiments on two language pairs demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our proposed training framework.

Integrating Local Real Data with Global Gradient Prototypes for Classifier Re-Balancing in Federated Long-Tailed Learning

Federated Learning (FL) has become a popular distributed learning paradigm that involves multiple clients training a global model collaboratively in a data privacy-preserving manner. However, the data samples usually follow a long-tailed distribution in the real world, and FL on the decentralized and long-tailed data yields a poorly-behaved global model severely biased to the head classes with the majority of the training samples. To alleviate this issue, decoupled training has recently been introduced to FL, considering it has achieved promising results in centralized long-tailed learning by re-balancing the biased classifier after the instance-balanced training. However, the current study restricts the capacity of decoupled training in federated long-tailed learning with a sub-optimal classifier re-trained on a set of pseudo features, due to the unavailability of a global balanced dataset in FL. In this work, in order to re-balance the classifier more effectively, we integrate the local real data with the global gradient prototypes to form the local balanced datasets, and thus re-balance the classifier during the local training. Furthermore, we introduce an extra classifier in the training phase to help model the global data distribution, which addresses the problem of contradictory optimization goals caused by performing classifier re-balancing locally. Extensive experiments show that our method consistently outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods in various settings.

When to Trust Aggregated Gradients: Addressing Negative Client Sampling in Federated Learning

Federated Learning has become a widely-used framework which allows learning a global model on decentralized local datasets under the condition of protecting local data privacy. However, federated learning faces severe optimization difficulty when training samples are not independently and identically distributed (non-i.i.d.). In this paper, we point out that the client sampling practice plays a decisive role in the aforementioned optimization difficulty. We find that the negative client sampling will cause the merged data distribution of currently sampled clients heavily inconsistent with that of all available clients, and further make the aggregated gradient unreliable. To address this issue, we propose a novel learning rate adaptation mechanism to adaptively adjust the server learning rate for the aggregated gradient in each round, according to the consistency between the merged data distribution of currently sampled clients and that of all available clients. Specifically, we make theoretical deductions to find a meaningful and robust indicator that is positively related to the optimal server learning rate and can effectively reflect the merged data distribution of sampled clients, and we utilize it for the server learning rate adaptation. Extensive experiments on multiple image and text classification tasks validate the great effectiveness of our method.
