Rogue waves excitation on zero-background in the (2+1)-dimensional KdV equation

An analytical method for constructing various coherent localized solutions with short-lived characteristics is proposed based on a novel self-mapping transformation of the (2+1) dimensional KdV equation. The highlight of this method is that it allows one to generate a class of basic two--dimensional rogue waves excited on zero-background for this equation, which includes the line-soliton-induced rogue wave and dromion-induced rogue wave with exponentially decaying as well as the lump-induced rogue wave with algebraically decaying in the -plane. Our finding provides a proper candidate to describe two-dimensional rogue waves and paves a feasible path for studying rogue waves.

Do Rogue Wave Exist in the Kadomtesv-Petviashivili I Equation ?

There is considerable fundamental theoretical and applicative interest in obtaining two-dimensional rogue wave similar to one-dimensional rogue wave of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Here, we first time proposes a self-mapping transformation and analytically predict the existence of a family of novel spatio-temporal rogue wave solutions for the Kadomtesv-Petviashivili equation. We discover that these spatio-temporal rogue waves showing a strong analogy characteristics of the short-lives with rogue waves of the NLS equation. Our fingdings can also provide a solid mathematical basis for theory and application in shallow water, plasma and optics. This technique could be available to construct rogue-like waves of (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear wave models. Also, these studies could be helpful to deepen our understandings and enrich our knowledge about rogue waves.

Matter-wave solitons and finite-amplitude Bloch waves in optical lattices with a spatially modulated nonlinearity

We investigate solitons and nonlinear Bloch waves in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices. By introducing specially designed localized profiles of the spatial modulation of the attractive nonlinearity, we construct an infinite number of exact soliton solutions in terms of the Mathieu and elliptic functions, with the chemical potential belonging to the semi-infinite bandgap of the optical-lattice-induced spectrum. Starting from the exact solutions, we employ the relaxation method to construct generic families of soliton solutions in a numerical form. The stability of the solitons is investigated through the computation of the eigenvalues for small perturbations, and also by direct simulations. Finally, we demonstrate a virtually exact (in the numerical sense) composition relation between nonlinear Bloch waves and solitons.

Exact exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for stable vortex modes

We construct exact solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for solitary vortices, and approximate ones for fundamental solitons, in 2D models of Bose-Einstein condensates with a spatially modulated nonlinearity of either sign and a harmonic trapping potential. The number of vortex-soliton (VS) modes is determined by the discrete energy spectrum of a related linear Schrödinger equation. The VS families in the system with the attractive and repulsive nonlinearity are mutually complementary. \emph{% Stable} VSs with vorticity $S\geq 2$ and those corresponding to higher-order radial states are reported for the first time, in the case of the attraction and repulsion, respectively.

Vortices and ring dark solitons in nonlinear amplifying waveguides

We consider the generation and propagation of (2+1)-dimensional beams in a nonlinear waveguide with the linear gain. Simple self-similar evolution of the beams is achieved at the asymptotic stage, if the input beams represent the fundamental mode. On the contrary, if they carry vorticity or amplitude nodes (or phase slips), vortex tori and ring dark solitons (RDSs) are generated, featuring another type of the self-similar evolution, with an exponentially shrinking vortex core or notch of the RDS. Numerical and analytical considerations reveal that these self-similar structures are robust entities in amplifying waveguides, being \emph{stable} against azimuthal perturbations.

Controlling soliton interactions in Bose-Einstein condensates by synchronizing the Feshbach resonance and harmonic trap

We present how to control interactions between solitons, either bright or dark, in Bose-Einstein condensates by synchronizing Feshbach resonance and harmonic trap. Our results show that as long as the scattering length is to be modulated in time via a changing magnetic field near the Feshbach resonance, and the harmonic trapping frequencies are also modulated in time, exact solutions of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation can be found in a general closed form, and interactions between two solitons are modulated in detail in currently experimental conditions. We also propose experimental protocols to observe the phenomena such as fusion, fission, warp, oscillation, elastic collision in future experiments.
