Enhanced interferometry using squeezed thermal states and even or odd states

We derive a general expression of the quantum Fisher information for a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, with the port inputs of an \emph{arbitrary} pure state and a squeezed thermal state. We find that the standard quantum limit can be beaten, when even or odd states are applied to the pure-state port. In particular, when the squeezed thermal state becomes a thermal state, all the even or odd states have the same quantum Fisher information for given photon numbers. For a squeezed thermal state, optimal even or odd states are needed to approach the Heisenberg limit. As examples, we consider several common even or odd states: Fock states, even or odd coherent states, squeezed vacuum states, and single-photon-subtracted squeezed vacuum states. We also demonstrate that super-precision can be realized by implementing the parity measurement for these states.

Entangling two macroscopic mechanical mirrors in a two-cavity optomechanical system

We propose a simple method to generate quantum entanglement between two macroscopic mechanical resonators in a two-cavity optomechanical system. This entanglement is induced by the radiation pressure of a single photon hopping between the two cavities. Our results are analytical, so that the entangled states are explicitly shown. Up to local operations, these states are two-mode three-component states, and hence the degree of entanglement can be well quantified by the concurrence. By analyzing the system parameters, we find that, to achieve a maximum average entanglement, the system should work in the single-photon strong-coupling regime and the deep-resolved-sideband regime.

Photon blockade in quadratically coupled optomechanical systems

We study the steady-state photon statistics of a quadratically coupled optomechanical cavity, which is weakly driven by a monochromatic laser field. We examine the photon blockade by evaluating the second-order correlation function of the cavity photons. By restricting the system within the zero-, one-, and two-photon subspace, we obtain an approximate analytical expression for the correlation function. We also numerically investigate the correlation function by solving the quantum master equation including both optical and mechanical dissipations. The results show that, in the deep-resolved-sideband and single-photon strong-coupling regimes, the single-photon resonant driving will induce a photon blockade, which is limited by the thermal noise of the mechanical environment.

Modulated Electromechanics: Large Enhancements of Nonlinearities

It is well-known that the nonlinear coupling between a mechanical oscillator and a superconducting oscillator or optical cavity can be used to generate a Kerr-nonlinearity for the cavity mode. We show that the strength of this Kerr-nonlinearity, as well as the effect of the photon-pressure force can be enormously increased by modulating the strength of the nonlinear coupling. We present an electromechanical circuit in which this enhancement can be readily realized.

Correlated two-photon scattering in cavity optomechanics

We present an exact analytical solution of the two-photon scattering in a cavity optomechanical system. This is achieved by solving the quantum dynamics of the total system, including the optomechanical cavity and the cavity-field environment, with the Laplace transform method. The long-time solution reveals detailed physical processes involved as well as the corresponding resonant photon frequencies. We characterize the photon correlation induced in the scattering process by calculating the two-photon joint spectrum of the long-time state. Clear evidence for photon frequency anti-correlation can be observed in the joint spectrum. In addition, we calculate the equal-time second-order correlation function of the cavity photons. The results show that the radiation pressure coupling can induce photon blockade effect, which is strongly modulated by the phonon sideband resonance. In particular, we obtain an explicit expression of optomechanical coupling strength determining these sideband modulation peaks based on the two-photon resonance condition.

Photon blockade induced by atoms with Rydberg coupling

We study the photon blockade of two-photon scattering in a one-dimensional waveguide, which contains two atoms coupled via the Rydberg interaction. We obtain the analytic scattering solution of photonic wave packets with the Laplace transform method. We examine the photon correlation by addressing the two-photon relative wave function and the second-order correlation function in the single- and two-photon resonance cases. It is found that, under the single-photon resonance condition, photon bunching and antibunching can be observed in the two-photon transmission and reflection, respectively. In particular, the bunching and antibunching effects become stronger with the increasing of the Rydberg coupling strength. In addition, we find a phenomenon of bunching-antibunching transition caused by the two-photon resonance.

Spectrum of single-photon emission and scattering in cavity optomechanics

We present an analytic solution describing the quantum state of a single photon after interacting with a moving mirror in a cavity. This includes situations when the photon is initially stored in a cavity mode as well as when the photon is injected into the cavity. In addition, we obtain the spectrum of the output photon in the resolved-sideband limit, which reveals spectral features of the single-photon strong-coupling regime in this system. We also clarify the conditions under which the phonon sidebands are visible and the photon-state frequency shift can be resolved.

Cooling of a mirror in cavity optomechanics with a chirped pulse

We investigate the response of a harmonically confined mirror to an optical pulse in cavity optomechanics. We show that when the pulsed coupling strength takes the form of a chirped pulse, thermal fluctuations of the mirror can be significantly transferred to the cavity field. In addition, the frequency modulation of the pulse could enable a better cooling performance by suppressing the sensitivity of the dependence of detuning and pulse areas. Using numerical investigations, we find that the pulsed-cooling is mainly limited by the cavity-field decay rate.

Quantum thermalization of two coupled two-level systems in eigenstate and bare-state representations

We study analytically the quantum thermalization of two coupled two-level systems (TLSs), which are connected with either two independent heat baths (IHBs) or a common heat bath (CHB). We understand the quantum thermalization in eigenstate and bare-state representations when the coupling between the two TLSs is stronger and weaker than the TLS-bath couplings, respectively. In the IHB case, we find that when the two IHBs have the same temperatures, the two coupled TLSs in eigenstate representation can be thermalized with the same temperature as those of the IHBs. However, in the case of two IHBs at different temperatures, just when the energy detuning between the two TLSs satisfies a special condition, the two coupled TLSs in eigenstate representation can be thermalized with an immediate temperature between those of the two IHBs. In bare-state representation, we find a counterintuitive phenomenon that, under some conditions, the temperature of the TLS connected with the high-temperature bath is lower than that of the other TLS, which is connected with the low-temperature bath. In the CHB case, the coupled TLSs in eigenstate representation can be thermalized with the same temperature as that of the CHB in nonresonant cases. In bare-state representation, the TLS with a larger energy separation can be thermalized to a thermal equilibrium with a lower temperature. In the resonant case, we find a phenomenon of anti-thermalization. We also study the steady-state entanglement between the two TLSs in both the IHB and CHB cases.

Parametric generation of quadrature squeezing of mirrors in cavity optomechanics

We propose a method to generate quadrature squeezed states of a moving mirror in a Fabry-Perot cavity. This is achieved by exploiting the fact that when the cavity is driven by an external field with a large detuning, the moving mirror behaves as a parametric oscillator. We show that parametric resonance can be reached approximately by modulating the driving field amplitude at a frequency matching the frequency shift of the mirror. The parametric resonance leads to an efficient generation of squeezing, which is limited by the thermal noise of the environment.

Coherent excitation-energy transfer and quantum entanglement in a dimer

We study coherent energy transfer of a single excitation and quantum entanglement in a dimer, which consists of a donor and an acceptor modeled by two two-level systems. Between the donor and the acceptor, there exists a dipole-dipole interaction, which provides the physical mechanism for coherent energy transfer and entanglement generation. The donor and the acceptor couple to two independent heat baths with diagonal couplings that do not dissipate the energy of the non-coupling dimer. Special attention is paid to the effect on single-excitation energy transfer and entanglement generation of the energy detuning between the donor and the acceptor and the temperatures of the two heat baths. It is found that, the probability for single-excitation energy transfer largely depends on the energy detuning in the low temperature limit. Concretely, the positive and negative energy detunings can increase and decrease the probability at the steady state, respectively. In the high temperature limit, however, the effect of the energy detuning on the probability is neglectably small. We also find that the probability is neglectably dependent on the bath temperature difference of the two heat baths. In addition, it is found that quantum entanglement can be generated in the process of coherent energy transfer. As the bath temperature increases, the generated steady state entanglement decreases. For a given bath temperature, the steady-state entanglement decreases with the increasing of the absolute value of the energy detuning.

Correlated two-photon transport in a one-dimensional waveguide side-coupled to a nonlinear cavity

We investigate the transport properties of two photons inside a one-dimensional waveguide side-coupled to a single-mode nonlinear cavity. The cavity is filled with a nonlinear Kerr medium. Based on the Laplace transform method, we present analytic solution of quantum states of the transmitted and reflected two photons, which are initially prepared in a Lorentzian wave packet. The solution reveals how quantum correlation between the two photons emerge after the scattering by the nonlinear cavity. In particular, we show that the output wave function of the two photons in position space can be localized in the relative coordinates, which is a feature that may be interpreted as a two-photon bound state in this waveguide-cavity system.

Tailorable couplings of a cantilever with a superconducting charge qubit: Quantum state engineering

We propose a theoretical scheme to realize tailorable couplings between a cantilever and a superconducting charge qubit. By tuning the controllable parameters of the qubit, both linear and nonlinear couplings between the cantilever and the qubit can be achieved. Based on these couplings, we show the preparation of the cantilever into some interesting quantum states, such as superposed coherent states and squeezed states, via manipulating and detecting the qubit. We also study the influence of the environment on quantum states of the cantilever. It is indicated that decoherence induced by the environment can drive the cantilever from superposed coherent states into the steady coherent state. It is also found that the environment can induce the steady-state position squeezing of the cantilever under a critical temperature. These results will shed new light on production of nonclassical effects of the cantilever.

Single-particle machine for quantum thermalization

The long time accumulation of the \textit{random} actions of a single particle "reservoir" on its coupled system can transfer some temperature information of its initial state to the coupled system. This dynamic process can be referred to as a quantum thermalization in the sense that the coupled system can reach a stable thermal equilibrium with a temperature equal to that of the reservoir. We illustrate this idea based on the usual micromaser model, in which a series of initially prepared two-level atoms randomly pass through an electromagnetic cavity. It is found that, when the randomly injected atoms are initially prepared in a thermal equilibrium state with a given temperature, the cavity field will reach a thermal equilibrium state with the same temperature as that of the injected atoms. As in two limit cases, the cavity field can be cooled and "coherently heated" as a maser process, respectively, when the injected atoms are initially prepared in ground and excited states. Especially, when the atoms in equilibrium are driven to possess some coherence, the cavity field may reach a higher temperature in comparison with the injected atoms. We also point out a possible experimental test for our theoretical prediction based on a superconducting circuit QED system.

Amplification of quantum discord between two uncoupled qubits in a common environment by phase decoherence

We study analytically the dynamic behaviors of quantum correlation measured by quantum discord between two uncoupled qubits, which are immersed in a common Ohmic environment. We show that the quantum discord of the two noninteracting qubits can be greatly amplified or protected for certain initially prepared $X$-type states in the time evolution. Especially, it is found that there does exist the stable amplification of the quantum discord for the case of two identical qubits, and the quantum discord can be protected for the case of two different qubits with a large detuning. It is also indicated that in general there does exist a sudden change of the quantum discord in the time evolution at a critic time point $t_c$, and the discord amplification and protection may occur only in the time interval $0<t\leq t_c$ for certain $X$-type states. This sheds new light on the creation and protection of quantum correlation.

Controlling the transport of single photons by tuning the frequency of either one or two cavities in an array of coupled cavities

We theoretically study how to control transport, bound states, and resonant states of a single photon in a one-dimensional coupled-cavity array. We find that the transport of a single photon in the cavity array can be controlled by tuning the frequency of either one or two cavities. If one of the cavities in the array has a tunable frequency, and its frequency is tuned to be larger (or smaller) than those of other cavities, then there is a photon bound state above (or below) the energy band of the coupled cavity array. However, if two cavities in the array have tunable frequencies, then there exist both bound states and resonant states. When the frequencies of the two cavities are chosen to be much larger than those of other cavities and the hopping couplings between any two nearest-neighbor cavities are weak, a single photon with a resonant wave vector can be trapped in the region between the two frequency-tunable cavities. In this case, a quantum supercavity can be formed by these two frequency-tunable cavities. We also study how to apply this photon transport control to an array of coupled superconducting transmission line resonators.

Quantum anti-Zeno effect in artificial quantum systems

In this paper, we study a quantum anti-Zeno effect (QAZE) purely induced by repetitive measurements for an artificial atom interacting with a structured bath. This bath can be artificially realized with coupled resonators in one dimension and possesses photonic band structure like Bloch electron in a periodic potential. In the presence of repetitive measurements, the pure QAZE is discovered as the observable decay is not negligible even for the atomic energy level spacing outside of the energy band of the artificial bath. If there were no measurements, the decay would not happen outside of the band. In this sense, the enhanced decay is completely induced by measurements through the relaxation channels provided by the bath. Besides, we also discuss the controversial golden rule decay rates originated from the van Hove's singularities and the effects of the counter-rotating terms.

Dynamic sensitivity of phton-dressed atomic ensenmble with quantum criticality

We study the dynamic sensitivity of an atomic ensemble dressed by a single-mode cavity field (called a photon-dressed atomic ensemble), which is described by the Dicke model near the quantum critical point. It is shown that when an extra atom in a pure initial state passes through the cavity, the photon-dressed atomic ensemble will experience a quantum phase transition, showing an explicit sudden change in its dynamics characterized by the Loschmidt echo of this quantum critical system. With such dynamic sensitivity, the Dicke model can resemble to the cloud chamber for detecting a flying particle by the enhanced trajectory due to the classical phase transition.
