Inferring binary parameters with dual-line gravitational wave detection from tight inspiraling double neutron stars

Neutron star (NS) binaries can be potentially intriguing gravitational wave (GW) sources, with both high- and low-frequency radiations from the possibly aspherical individual stars and the binary orbit, respectively. The successful detection of such a dual-line source could provide fresh insights into binary geometry and NS physics. In the absence of electromagnetic observations, we develop a strategy for inferring the spin-orbit misalignment angle using the tight dual-line double NS system under the spin-orbit coupling. Based on the four-year joint detection of a typical dual-line system with LISA and Cosmic Explorer, we find that the misalignment angle and the NS moment of inertia can be measured with sub-percentage and 5% accuracy, respectively.

Effects of spin-orbit coupling on gravitational waveforms from a triaxial non-aligned neutron star in a binary system

Spinning neutron stars (NSs) can emit continuous gravitational waves (GWs) that carry a wealth of information about the compact object. If such a signal is detected, it will provide us with new insight into the physical properties of matter under extreme conditions. Future space-based GW detectors, such as LISA and TianQin, can potentially detect some double NSs in tight binaries with orbital periods shorter than 10 minutes. The possibility of a successful directed search for continuous GWs from the spinning NS in such a binary system identified by LISA/TianQin will be significantly increased with the proposed next-generation ground-based GW observatories, such as Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope. Searching for continuous GWs from such a tight binary system requires highly accurate waveform templates that account for the interaction of the NS with its companion. In this spirit, we derive analytic approximations that describe the GWs emitted by a triaxial non-aligned NS in a binary system in which the effects of spin-orbit coupling have been incorporated. The difference with the widely used waveform for the isolated NS is estimated and the parameter estimation accuracy of an example signal using Cosmic Explorer is calculated. For a typical tight double NS system with a 6~min orbital period, the angular frequency correction of the spinning NS in this binary due to spin precession is $\sim 10^{-6}~{\rm Hz}$, which is in the same order of magnitude as the angular frequency of orbital precession. The fitting factor between the waveforms with and without spin precession will drop to less than 0.97 after a few days ($\sim 10^5~{\rm s}$). We find that spin-orbit coupling has the potential to improve the accuracy of parameter estimation, especially for the binary inclination angle and spin precession cone opening angle, by up to 3 orders of magnitude. Multi-messenger observations of double neutron stars in Galactic disk with gravitational and radio waves

We evaluate the prospects for radio follow-up of the double neutron stars (DNSs) in the Galactic disk that could be detected through future space-borne gravitational wave (GW) detectors. We first simulate the DNS population in the Galactic disk that is accessible to space-borne GW detectors according to the merger rate from recent LIGO results. Using the inspiraling waveform for the eccentric binary, the average number of the DNSs detectable by TianQin (TQ), LISA, and TQ+LISA are 217, 368, and 429, respectively. For the joint GW detection of TQ+LISA, the forecasted parameter estimation accuracies, based on the Fisher information matrix, for the detectable sources can reach the levels of $ΔP_{\mathrm b}/P_{\mathrm b} \lesssim 10^{-6}$, $ΔΩ\lesssim 100~{\mathrm {deg}}^2$, $Δe/e \lesssim 0.3$, and $Δ\dot{P}_{\mathrm b} / \dot{P}_{\mathrm b} \lesssim 0.02$. These estimation accuracies are fitted in the form of power-law function of signal-to-noise ratio. Next, we simulate the radio pulse emission from the possible pulsars in these DNSs according to pulsar beam geometry and the empirical distributions of spin period and luminosity. For the DNSs detectable by TQ+LISA, the average number of DNSs detectable by the follow-up pulsar searches using the Parkes, FAST, SKA1, and SKA are 8, 10, 43, and 87, respectively. Depending on the radio telescope, the average distances of these GW-detectable pulsar binaries vary from 1 to 7 kpc. Considering the dominant radiometer noise and phase jitter noise, the timing accuracy of these GW-detectable pulsars can be as low as 70 ${\rm ns}$ while the most probable value is about 100 $μ{\rm s}$.

Enhance Primordial Black Hole Abundance through the Non-linear Processes around Bounce Point

The non-singular bouncing cosmology is an alternative paradigm to inflation, wherein the background energy density vanishes at the bounce point, in the context of Einstein gravity. Therefore, the non-linear effects in the evolution of density fluctuations ($δρ$) may be strong in the bounce phase, which potentially provides a mechanism to enhance the abundance of primordial black holes (PBHs). This article presents a comprehensive illustration for PBH enhancement due to the bounce phase. To calculate the non-linear evolution of $δρ$, the Raychaudhuri equation is numerically solved here. Since the non-linear processes may lead to a non-Gaussian probability distribution function for $δρ$ after the bounce point, the PBH abundance is calculated in a modified Press-Schechter formalism. In this case, the criterion of PBH formation is complicated, due to complicated non-linear evolutionary behavior of $δρ$ during the bounce phase. Our results indicate that the bounce phase indeed has potential to enhance the PBH abundance sufficiently. Furthermore, the PBH abundance is applied to constrain the parameters of bounce phase, providing a complementary to the surveys of cosmic microwave background and large scale structure.

Prospects and Strategies for Detecting Nonlinear Gravitational Wave Burst with Memory from Potential Merger Event SDSSJ1430$+$2303 by Pulsar Timing Arrays

The recently observed chirping signature in the light curves of Seyfert 1 galaxy SDSSJ1430$+$2303 could be explained by a late-inspiralling supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) system in the galactic center, which will merge in the near future (or could have merged already). For the merging SMBBH scenario, SDSSJ1430$+$2303 can be a source of nonlinear gravitational wave (GW) burst with memory (BWM), which may provide a promising target for future pulsar timing array (PTA) observations. In this work, we investigate the prospects for detecting the BWM signal from SDSSJ1430$+$2303 by the International PTA (IPTA) and FAST-PTA in the next $5$ years. We firstly propose strategies on searching for this target signal, including the selection of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and the distribution of observation time. Then we simulate PTA observations based on the proposed strategies and obtain the probability density functions of the network signal-to-noise ratio and parameter-estimation errors of the BWM signal, considering the uncertainties of parameters of the SMBBH and both white and red noises of the selected MSPs. Our result shows that although IPTA can marginally detect the BWM in $5$ years, FAST-PTA can detect it with significantly higher confidence. Moreover, the archived IPTA data is important in estimating the merger time of the SMBBH, when combined with the FAST-PTA data. This work can serve as a guidance for future PTA observations and multi-messenger studies on SDSSJ1430$+$2303 and similar systems.

Parameter-Estimation Biases for Eccentric Supermassive Binary Black Holes in Pulsar Timing Arrays: Biases Caused by Ignored Pulsar Terms

The continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) from individual supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) can be encoded in the timing residuals of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). For each pulsar, the residuals actually contain an Earth term and a pulsar term, but usually only the Earth term is considered as signal and the pulsar term is dropped, which leads to parameter-estimation biases (PEBs) for the SMBBHs, and currently there are no convenient evaluations of the PEBs. In this article, we formulate the PEBs for a SMBBH with an eccentric orbit. In our analyses, the unknown phases of pulsar terms are treated as random variables obeying the uniform distribution $U[0,2π)$, due to the fact that pulsar distances are generally poorly measured. Our analytical results are in accordance with the numerical work by Zhu et. al. (2016) at $1.5σ$ level, implying that our formulae are effective in estimating magnitudes of the PEBs. Additionally, we find that for two parameters -- Earth term phase $φ^E$ and orbital eccentricity $e$, their biases $Δφ^E$ and $Δe/e$ monotonically decrease as $e$ increases, which partly confirms a hypothesis in our previous work Chen & Zhang (2018). Furthermore, we also calculate the PEBs caused by the recently observed common-spectrum process (CSP), finding that if the strain amplitude of the continuous GW is significantly stronger ($3$ times larger, in our cases) than the stochastic GW background, the PEBs from pulsar terms are larger than those from the CSP. Our formulae of the PEBs can be conveniently applied in the future PTA data analyses.

Search for Continuous Gravitational Wave Signals in Pulsar Timing Residuals: A New Scalable Approach with Diffusive Nested Sampling

Detecting continuous nanohertz gravitational waves (GWs) generated by individual close binaries of supermassive black holes (CB-SMBHs) is one of the primary objectives of pulsar timing arrays (PTAs). The detection sensitivity is slated to increase significantly as the number of well-timed millisecond pulsars will increase by more than an order of magnitude with the advent of next-generation radio telescopes. Currently, the Bayesian analysis pipeline using parallel tempering Markov chain Monte Carlo has been applied in multiple studies for CB-SMBH searches, but it may be challenged by the high dimensionality of the parameter space for future large-scale PTAs. One solution is to reduce the dimensionality by maximizing or marginalizing over uninformative parameters semi-analytically, but it is not clear whether this approach can be extended to more complex signal models without making overly simplified assumptions. Recently, the method of diffusive nested (DNest) sampling shown the capability of coping with high dimensionality and multimodality effectively in Bayesian analysis. In this paper, we apply DNest to search for continuous GWs in simulated pulsar timing residuals and find that it performs well in terms of accuracy, robustness, and efficiency for a PTA including $\mathcal{O}(10^2)$ pulsars. DNest also allows a simultaneous search of multiple sources elegantly, which demonstrates its scalability and general applicability. Our results show that it is convenient and also high beneficial to include DNest in current toolboxes of PTA analysis.

Interpreting cosmological tensions from the effective field theory of torsional gravity

Cosmological tensions can arise within $Λ$CDM scenario amongst different observational windows, which may indicate new physics beyond the standard paradigm if confirmed by measurements. In this article, we report how to alleviate both the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions simultaneously within torsional gravity from the perspective of effective field theory (EFT). Following these observations, we construct concrete models of Lagrangians of torsional gravity. Specifically, we consider the parametrization $f(T)=-T-2Λ/M_P^2+αT^β$, where two out of the three parameters are independent. This model can efficiently fit observations solving the two tensions. To our knowledge, this is the first time where a modified gravity theory can alleviate both $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions simultaneously, hence, offering an additional argument in favor of gravitational modification.

Gravitational wave detection from OJ 287 via a pulsar timing array

Blazar OJ 287 is a candidate nanoHertz (nHz) gravitational wave (GW) source. In this article, we investigate the GWs generated by OJ 287 and their potential detection through a pulsar timing array (PTA). First, we obtain the orbit and the corresponding GW strain of OJ 287. During the time span of the next 10 years (2019 to 2029), the GW of OJ 287 will be active before 2021, with a peak strain amplitude $8 \times 10^{-16}$, and then decay after that. When OJ 287 is silent in the GW channel during 2021 to 2029, the timing residual signals of the PTA will be dominated by the 'pulsar term' of the GW strain and this provides an opportunity to observe this pulsar term. Furthermore, we choose 26 pulsars with white noise below 300 ns to detect the GW signal of OJ 287, evaluating their timing residuals and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). The total SNR (with a cadence of 2 weeks in the next 10 years) of the PTA ranges from 1.9 to 2.9, corresponding to a weak GW signal for the current sensitivity level. Subsequently, we investigate the potential measurement of the parameters of OJ 287 using these pulsars. In particular, PSR J0437-4715, with a precisely measured distance, has the potential to constrain the polarization angle with an uncertainty below $8^°$ and this pulsar will play an important role in future PTA observations.

Primordial Magnetic Field from Gravitationally Coupled Electrodynamics in Bouncing Scenario

We in this paper study the generation of primordial magnetic field (PMF) in the non-singular bouncing scenario, through the coupling of the electromagnetic field to gravity. We adopt an electrodynamic model with a coupling coefficient as a function of the scale factor $a$, i.e. $f=1+(a/a_\star)^{-n}$, with $a_\star$ and $n>0$ being constants. The result implies that in this mechanism, the power spectrum of PMF today is always blue tilted on large scales from $1$ Mpc to the Hubble length, and the observational constraints favor the ekpyrotic-bounce scenario. Furthermore, the back reaction of the energy density of PMF at the bouncing point yields theoretical constraints on the bouncing model.

Tracing Primordial Black Holes in Nonsingular Bouncing Cosmology

We in this paper investigate the formation and evolution of primordial black holes (PBHs) in nonsingular bouncing cosmologies. We discuss the formation of PBH in the contracting phase and calculate the PBH abundance as a function of the sound speed and Hubble parameter. Afterwards, by taking into account the subsequent PBH evolution during the bouncing phase, we derive the density of PBHs and their Hawking radiation. Our analysis shows that nonsingular bounce models can be constrained from the backreaction of PBHs.

Vacuum and Gravitons of Relic Gravitational Waves, and Regularization of Spectrum and Energy-Momentum Tensor

The spectrum of relic gravitational wave (RGW) contains high-frequency divergences, which should be removed. We present a systematic study of the issue, based on the exact RGW solution that covers the five stages, from inflation to the acceleration, each being a power law expansion. We show that the present RGW consists of vacuum dominating at $f>10^{11}$Hz and graviton dominating at $f<10^{11}$Hz, respectively. The gravitons are produced by the four cosmic transitions, mostly by the inflation-reheating one. We perform adiabatic regularization to remove vacuum divergences in three schemes: at present, at the end of inflation, and at horizon-exit, to the 2-nd adiabatic order for the spectrum, and the 4-th order for energy density and pressure. In the first scheme a cutoff is needed to remove graviton divergences. We find that all three schemes yield the spectra of a similar profile, and the primordial spectrum defined far outside horizon during inflation is practically unaffected. We also regularize the gauge-invariant perturbed inflaton and the scalar curvature perturbation by the last two schemes, and find that the scalar spectra, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the consistency relation remain unchanged.

Initial Condition of Relic Gravitational Waves Constrained by LIGO S6 and Multiple Interferometers

The relic gravitational wave (RGW) generated during the inflation depends on the initial condition via the amplitude, the spectral index $n_t$ and the running index $α_t$. CMB observations so far have only constrained the tensor-scalar ratio $r$, but not $n_t$ nor $α_t$. Complementary to this, the ground-based interferometric detectors working at $\sim 10^2$Hz are able to constrain the spectral indices that influence the spectrum sensitively at high frequencies. In this work we give a proper normalization of the analytical spectrum at the low frequency end, yielding a modification by a factor of $\sim 1/50$ to the previous treatment. We calculate the signal-noise ratios (SNR) for various ($n_t,α_t$) at fixed $r=0.2$ by S6 of LIGO H-L, and obtain the observational upper limit on the running index $α_t<0.02093$ (i.e, at a detection rate $95\%$ and a false alarm rate $5\%$) at the default $(n_t=0,r=0.2)$. This is consistent with the constraint on the energy density obtained by LIGO-Virgo Collaboration. Extending to the four correlated detectors currently running, the calculated SNR improves slightly. When extending to the six correlated detectors of the second-generation in design, the calculated SNR is $\sim 10^3$ times over the previous two cases, due to the high sensitivities. RGW can be directly detected by the six 2nd-generation detectors for models with $α_t>0.01364$.
