Bouncing singularities and thermal correlators on line defects

Thermal correlators in holographic conformal field theories are known to exhibit singularities in complex time, sometimes referred to as ``bouncing singularities", which are believed to be related to bulk geodesics probing the black hole interior. These singularities correspond to exponentially suppressed contributions in the high-frequency limit of the thermal correlators. We revisit in detail the calculation of retarded two-point functions of local operators dual to bulk scalar fields in the planar AdS black hole background. We confirm that these correlators develop bouncing singularities, and highlight the agreement of two independent methods: a large frequency WKB analysis with infalling boundary conditions at the horizon; and an asymptotic OPE analysis that relies only on the near-boundary expansion, without any direct input from the black hole interior. We then extend these calculations to the case of the retarded two-point function of displacement operators on a Wilson line in the finite temperature gauge theory. This is computed holographically by solving the wave equation for the transverse fluctuations of the dual string worldsheet in the planar AdS black hole background. We find that these defect correlators also exhibit bouncing singularities, and again observe exact agreement between the WKB analysis sensitive to the black hole interior and the asymptotic OPE analysis. This agreement suggests that the bouncing singularities and the corresponding OPE data encode a universal high-frequency structure of the retarded correlators, and we propose a factorization formula that encodes the deviations from this universality.

Looking at supersymmetric black holes for a very long time

We study correlation functions for extremal supersymmetric black holes. It is necessary to take into account the strongly coupled nature of the boundary supergraviton mode. We consider the case with ${\cal N}=2$ supercharges which is the minimal amount of supersymmetry needed to give a large ground state degeneracy, separated from the continuum. Using the exact solution for this theory we derive formulas for the two point function and we also give integral expressions for any $n$-point correlator. These correlators are time independent at large times and approach constant values that depend on the masses and couplings of the bulk theory. We also explain that in the non-supersymmetric case, the correlators develop a universal time dependence at long times. This paper is the longer companion paper of arXiv:2207.00407.

Boundary reparametrizations and six-point functions on the AdS$_2$ string

We compute the tree-level connected six-point function of identical scalar fluctuations of the AdS$_2$ string worldsheet dual to the half-BPS Wilson line in planar ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills. The calculation can be carried out analytically in the conformal gauge approach, where the boundary reparametrization mode of the string plays a crucial role. We also study the analytic continuation of the six-point function to an out-of-time-order configuration, which is related to a 3-to-3 scattering amplitude in flat space. As a check of our results, we also numerically compute the six-point function using the Nambu-Goto action in static gauge, finding agreement with the conformal gauge answer.

Holography for people with no time

We study the gravitational description of extremal supersymmetric black holes. We point out that the $AdS_2$ near horizon geometry can be used to compute interesting observables, such as correlation functions of operators. In this limit, the Hamiltonian is zero and correlation functions are time independent. We discuss some possible implications for the gravity description of black hole microstates. We also compare with numerical results in a supersymmetric version of SYK. These results can also be interpreted as providing a construction of wormholes joining two extremal black holes. This is the short version of a longer and more technical companion paper arXiv:2207.00408.

Circuit complexity for free Fermion with a mass quench

By using a recent approach proposed by Hackl $et\, al.$ to evaluate the complexity of the free fermionic Gaussian state, we compute the complexity of the Dirac vacuum state as well as the excited state of the Fermi system with a mass quench. First of all, we review the counting method given by Hackl $et\, al.$, and demonstrate that the result can be adapted to all of the compact transformation group $G$. Then, we utilize this result to study the time evolution of the complexity of these states. We show that, for the rotational invariant reference state, the total complexity of the incoming vacuum state will saturate the value of the instantaneous vacuum state at the late time, with a typical timescale to achieve the final stable state. Moreover, we find that the complexity growth under the sudden quench is directly proportional to the mass difference, which shares similar behaviors with the holograph complexity growth rate in an AdS-Vaidya black hole with a shock wave, even though the dual boundary CFT is strongly coupled. Finally, we obtain some features of the excited state and the non-rotational reference state.

5-dimensional Myers-Perry Black Holes Cannot be Over-spun by Gedanken Experiments

We apply the new version of gedanken experiment designed recently by Sorce and Wald, to over-spin the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes. As a result, the extremal black holes cannot be over-spun at the linear order. On the other hand, although the nearly extremal black holes could be over-spun at the linear order, this process is shown to be prohibited by the quadratic order correction. Thus no violation of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture occurs around the 5-dimensional Myers-Perry black holes.
