Channel Estimation for Hybrid RIS Aided MIMO Communications via Atomic Norm Minimization

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been introduced as a remedy for mitigating frequent blockages in millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication networks. However, perfect or nearly perfect channel state information (CSI) is fundamental in order to achieve their full potential. Traditionally, an RIS is fully passive without any baseband processing capabilities, which poses great challenges for CSI acquisition. Thus, we focus on the hybrid RIS architecture, where a small portion of RIS elements are active and able to processing the received pilot signals for estimating the corresponding channel. The channel estimation (CE) is done by resorting to off-the-grid compressive sensing technique, i.e., atomic norm minimization, for exacting channel parameters through two stages. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the passive RIS CE under the same training overhead.

Hybrid Relay-Reflecting Intelligent Surface-Aided Wireless Communications: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Perspectives

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have emerged as a cost- and energy-efficient technology that can customize and program the physical propagation environment by reflecting radio waves in preferred directions. However, the purely passive reflection of RISs not only limits the end-to-end channel beamforming gains, but also hinders the acquisition of accurate channel state information for the phase control at RISs. In this paper, we provide an overview of a hybrid relay-reflecting intelligent surface (HR-RIS) architecture, in which only a few elements are active and connected to power amplifiers and radio frequency chains. The introduction of a small number of active elements enables a remarkable system performance improvement which can also compensate for losses due to hardware impairments such as the deployment of limited-resolution phase shifters. Particularly, the active processing facilitates efficient channel estimation and localization at HR-RISs. We present two practical architectures for HR-RISs, namely, fixed and dynamic HR-RISs, and discuss their applications to beamforming, channel estimation, and localization. The benefits, key challenges, and future research directions for HR-RIS-aided communications are also highlighted. Numerical results for an exemplary deployment scenario show that HR-RISs with only four active elements can attain up to 42.8 percent and 41.8 percent improvement in spectral efficiency and energy efficiency, respectively, compared with conventional RISs.

Channel Estimation and Hybrid Architectures for RIS-Assisted Communications

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are considered as potential technologies for the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication system. Various benefits brought by deploying one or multiple RISs include increased spectrum and energy efficiency, enhanced connectivity, extended communication coverage, reduced complexity at transceivers, and even improved localization accuracy. However, to unleash their full potential, fundamentals related to RISs, ranging from physical-layer (PHY) modelling to RIS phase control, need to be addressed thoroughly. In this paper, we provide an overview of some timely research problems related to the RIS technology, i.e., PHY modelling (including also physics), channel estimation, potential RIS architectures, and RIS phase control (via both model-based and data-driven approaches), along with recent numerical results. We envision that more efforts will be devoted towards intelligent wireless environments, enabled by RISs.

Leveraging Location Information for RIS-aided mmWave MIMO Communications

Location information offered by external positioning systems, e.g., satellite navigation, can be used as prior information in the process of beam alignment and channel parameter estimation for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output networks. Benefiting from the availability of such prior information, albeit imperfect, the beam alignment and channel parameter estimation processes can be significantly accelerated with less candidate beams explored at all the terminals. We propose a practical channel parameter estimation method via atomic norm minimization, which outperforms the standard beam alignment in terms of both the mean square error and the effective spectrum efficiency for the same training overhead.

Passive RIS vs.Hybrid RIS: A Comparative Study on Channel Estimation

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) plays an important role in maintaining the connectivity in millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO systems when the direct channel between the transceivers is blocked. However, it is difficult to acquire the channel state information (CSI), which is essential for the design of RIS phase control matrix and beamforming vectors at the transceivers. In this paper, we compare the channel estimation (CE) performance and achieved spectral efficiency (SE) of the purely passive and hybrid RIS architectures. CE is done via atomic norm minimization (ANM). For the purely passive RIS, we follow a two-stage procedure to sequentially estimate the channel parameters, while for the hybrid RIS we estimate the individual channels at the RIS based on the observations from active RIS elements assuming alternating uplink and downlink training. The simulation results show that the purely passive RIS brings better CE and SE performance compared to the hybrid RIS under the same training overhead. We further consider different setups for the hybrid RIS and study the tradeoffs among them.

Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided mmWave MIMO Systems via Atomic Norm Minimization

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can shape the radio propagation environment by virtue of changing the impinging electromagnetic waves towards any desired directions, thus, breaking the general Snell's reflection law. However, the optimal control of the RIS requires perfect channel state information (CSI) of the individual channels that link the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) to each other via the RIS. Thereby super-resolution channel (parameter) estimation needs to be efficiently conducted at the BS or MS with CSI feedback to the RIS controller. In this paper, we adopt a two-stage channel estimation scheme for RIS-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO systems without a direct BS-MS channel, using atomic norm minimization to sequentially estimate the channel parameters, i.e., angular parameters, angle differences, and products of propagation path gains. We evaluate the mean square error of the parameter estimates, the RIS gains, the average effective spectrum efficiency bound, and average squared distance between the designed beamforming and combining vectors and the optimal ones. The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves super-resolution estimation compared to the existing benchmark schemes, thus offering promising performance in the subsequent data transmission phase.

Radio Localization and Mapping with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

5G radio at millimeter wave (mmWave) and beyond 5G concepts at 0.1-1 THz can exploit angle and delay measurements for localization, by the virtue of increased bandwidth and large antenna arrays but are limited in terms of blockage caused by obstacles. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are seen as a transformative technology that can control the physical propagation environment in which they are embedded by passively reflecting EM waves in preferred directions. Whereas such RISs have been mainly intended for communication purposes, RISs can have great benefits in terms of performance, energy consumption, and cost for localization and mapping. These benefits as well as associated challenges are the main topics of this paper.

Decision Triggered Data Transmission and Collection in Industrial Internet of Things

We propose a decision triggered data transmission and collection (DTDTC) protocol for condition monitoring and anomaly detection in the industrial Internet of things (IIoT). In the IIoT, the collection, processing, encoding, and transmission of the sensor readings are usually not for the reconstruction of the original data but for decision making at the fusion center. By moving the decision making process to the local end devices, the amount of data transmission can be significantly reduced, especially when normal signals with positive decisions dominate in the whole life cycle and the fusion center is only interested in collecting the abnormal data. The proposed concept combines compressive sensing, machine learning, data transmission, and joint decision making. The sensor readings are encoded and transmitted to the fusion center only when abnormal signals with negative decisions are detected. All the abnormal signals from the end devices are gathered at the fusion center for a joint decision with feedback messages forwarded to the local actuators. The advantage of such an approach lies in that it can significantly reduce the volume of data to be transmitted through wireless links. Moreover, the introduction of compressive sensing can further reduce the dimension of data tremendously. An exemplary case, i.e., diesel engine condition monitoring, is provided to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed scheme compared to the conventional ones.

Channel Estimation for RIS-Aided mmWave MIMO Channels

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can shape the radio propagation by passively changing the directions of impinging electromagnetic waves. The optimal control of the RIS requires perfect channel state information (CSI) of all the links connecting the base station (BS) and the mobile station (MS) via the RIS. Thereby the channel (parameter) estimation at the BS/MS and the related message feedback mechanism are needed. In this paper, we adopt a two-stage channel estimation scheme for the RIS-aided millimeter wave (mmWave) MIMO channels using an iterative reweighted method to sequentially estimate the channel parameters. We evaluate the average spectrum efficiency (SE) and the RIS beamforming gain of the proposed scheme and demonstrate that it achieves high-resolution estimation with the average SE comparable to that with perfect CSI.

Adaptive Beamforming Design for mmWave RIS-Aided Joint Localization and Communication

The concept of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been proposed to change the propagation of electromagnetic waves, e.g., reflection, diffraction, and refraction. To accomplish this goal, the phase values of the discrete RIS units need to be optimized. In this paper, we consider RIS-aided millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems for both accurate positioning and high data-rate transmission. We propose an adaptive phase shifter design based on hierarchical codebooks and feedback from the mobile station (MS). The benefit of the scheme lies in that the RIS does not require deployment of any active sensors and baseband processing units. During the update process of phase shifters, the combining vector at the MS is also sequentially refined. Simulation results show the performance improvement of the proposed algorithm over the random design scheme, in terms of both positioning accuracy and data rate. Moreover, the performance converges to exhaustive search scheme even in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime.

Large Intelligent Surface for Positioning in Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system for the fifth generation (5G) cellular communications can also enable single-anchor positioning and object tracking due to its large bandwidth and inherently high angular resolution. In this paper, we introduce the newly invented concept, large intelligent surface (LIS), to mmWave positioning systems, study the theoretical performance bounds (i.e., Cramér-Rao lower bounds) for positioning, and evaluate the impact of the number of LIS elements and the value of phase shifters on the position estimation accuracy compared to the conventional scheme with one direct link and one non-line-of-sight path. It is verified that better performance can be achieved with a LIS from the theoretical analyses and numerical study.

Millimeter Wave MIMO Channel Tracking Systems

We consider channel/subspace tracking systems for temporally correlated millimeter wave (e.g., E-band) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Our focus is given to the tracking algorithm in the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) environment, where the transmitter and the receiver are equipped with hybrid analog/digital precoder and combiner, respectively. In the absence of straightforward time-correlated channel model in the millimeter wave MIMO literature, we present a temporal MIMO channel evolution model for NLoS millimeter wave scenarios. Considering that conventional MIMO channel tracking algorithms in microwave bands are not directly applicable, we propose a new channel tracking technique based on sequentially updating the precoder and combiner. Numerical results demonstrate the superior channel tracking ability of the proposed technique over independent sounding approach in the presented channel model and the spatial channel model (SCM) adopted in 3GPP specification.
