Exploration of the magnetic-field-induced $5s5p$~$^3P_0$~-~$5s^2$~$^1S_0$ forbidden transition in bosonic Sr atom

We presented experimental and theoretical studies of the effect of an external magnetic field on the forbidden transition in the bosonic Sr atom. In our ultra-cold atomic system, the excitation fraction of $5s5p$~$^3P_0$~-~$5s^2$~$^1S_0$ forbidden transition was measured under the circumstance of the different magnetic field strengths by using the normalized detection method. Based on perturbation theory, we calculated the magnetic-field-induced $5s5p$~$^3P_0$~-~$5s^2$~$^1S_0$ transition rate. The excitation fraction as a function of the magnetic field strength was deduced according to the calculated results. A good agreement was found between the experimental measurements and the calculations. This study should be helpful in evaluating the magnetic field effects on the forbidden transition rate with higher accuracy. Moreover, it can help to understand the ultra-cold atomic interaction in the external magnetic field.

Hyperfine induced transitions probabilities from $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0,2}$ states in Sm-like ions

The hyperfine induced $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0,2}~-~4f^{14}5s^2~^1\mathrm{S}_0$ transition probabilities for highly charged Sm-like ions are calculated in the framework of the multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. Electron correlation, the Breit interaction and quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects are taken into account. For ions ranging from $Z=79$ to $Z=94$, $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0}$ is the first excited state, and the hyperfine induced transition is an dominant decay channel. For the $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_{2}$ state, the hyperfine induced transition (HIT) rates of Sm-like ions with $Z=82-94$ are reported as well as the magnetic dipole (M1) $^3\mathrm{P}^o_2 ~-~ ^3\mathrm{P}^o_1$, the electric quadrupole (E2) $^3\mathrm{P}^o_2 ~-~ ^3\mathrm{P}^o_{0,1}$, and the magnetic quadrupole (M2) $^3\mathrm{P}^o_2 ~-~ ^1\mathrm{S}_0$ transition probabilities. It is found that M1 transition from the $4f^{14}5s5p~^3\mathrm{P}^o_2$ state is the most important decay channel in this range on $Z \ge 82$.

Theoretical study on the hyperfine interaction constants and the isotope shift factors for the $3s^2~^1 S_{ 0} ~-~ 3s3p~^{3,1}P^o_1$ transitions in Al$^+$

We calculated the magnetic dipole and the electric quadrupole hyperfine interaction constants of 3s3p $^{3,1}P^o_1$ states and the isotope shift, including mass and field shift, factors for transitions from these two states to the ground state 3s$^2~^1S_0$ in Al$^+$ ions using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. The effects of the electron correlations and the Breit interaction on these physical quantities were investigated in detail based on the active space approach. It is found that the CC and the higher-order correlations are considerable for evaluating the uncertainties of the atomic parameters concerned. The uncertainties of the hyperfine interaction constants in this work are less than 1.5\%. Although the isotope shift factors are highly sensitive to the electron correlations, reasonable uncertainties were obtained by exploring the effects of the electron correlations. Moreover, we found that the relativistic nuclear recoil corrections to the mass shift factors are very small and insensitive to the electron correlations for Al$^{+}$. These atomic parameters present in this work are valuable for extracting the nuclear electric quadrupole moments and the mean-square charge radii of Al isotopes.

Atomic Parameters for the $2p^53p~^2[3/2]_2 - 2p^53s~^2[3/2]^o_2$ Transition of Ne I relevant in nuclear physics

We calculated the magnetic dipole hyperfine interaction constants and the electric field gradients of $2p^53p~^2[3/2]_2$ and $2p^53s~^2[3/2]^o_2$ levels of Ne I by using the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method. The electronic factors contributing to the isotope shifts were also estimated for the $λ= 614.5$ nm transition connecting these two states. Electron correlation and relativistic effects including the Breit interaction were investigated in details. Combining with recent measurements, we extracted the nuclear quadrupole moment values for $^{20}$Ne and $^{23}$Ne with a smaller uncertainty than the current available data. Isotope shifts in the $2p^53p~^2[3/2]_2 - 2p^53s~^2[3/2]^o_2$ transition based on the present calculated field- and mass-shift parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values. However, the field shifts in this transition are two or three orders of magnitude smaller than the mass shifts, making rather difficult to deduce changes in nuclear charge mean square radii. According to our theoretical predictions, we suggest to use instead transitions connecting levels arising from the $2p^53s$ configuration to the ground state, for which the normal mass shift and specific mass shift contributions counteract each other, producing relatively small mass shifts that are only one order of magnitude larger than relatively large field shifts, especially for the $2p^53s~^2[1/2]^o_1 - 2p^6~^1S_0$ transition.

Multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock calculations of excitation energies, oscillator strengths and hyperfine structure constants for low-lying levels of Sm I

The multi-configuration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method was employed to calculate the total and excitation energies, oscillator strengths and hyperfine structure constants for low-lying levels of Sm I. In the first-order perturbation approximation, we systematically analyzed correlation effects from each electrons and electron pairs. It was found that the core correlations are of importance for physical quantities concerned. Based on the analysis, the important configuration state wave functions were selected to constitute atomic state wave functions. By using this computational model, our excitation energies, oscillator strengths, and hyperfine structure constants are in better agreement with experimental values than earlier theoretical works.

EUV and Visible Spectroscopy of Promethiumlike Heavy Ions

We present extreme ultraviolet and visible spectra of promethiumlike tungsten and gold obtained with an electron beam ion trap (EBIT). Although the contributions from a few charge states are involved in the spectra, the charge state of the ion assigned to the observed lines is definitely identified by the time-of-flight analysis of the ions performed at the same time with the spectroscopic measurements. Experimental results are compared with collisional-radiative model calculations as well as previous experimental and theoretical studies.

Theoretical isotope shifts in neutral barium

The present work deals with a set of problems in isotope shifts of neutral barium spectral lines. Some well known transitions ($6s^2~^1S_0-6s6p~^{1,3}P^o_1$ and $6s^2~^1S_0-6p^2~^3P_0$) are first investigated. Values of the changes in the nuclear mean-square charge radius are deduced from the available experimental isotope shifts using our ab initio electronic factors. The three sets $\{ δ\langle r^2\rangle^{A,A'}\} $ obtained from these lines are consistent with each other. The combination of the available nuclear mean-square radii with our electronic factors for the $6s5d~^3D_{1,2} -6s6p~^{1}P^o_1$ transitions produces isotope shift values in conflict with the laser spectroscopy measurements of Dammalapati et al. (Eur. Phys. J. D 53, 1 (2009)).

The Power of Imaging: Constraining the Plasma Properties of GRMHD Simulations using EHT Observations of Sgr A*

Recent advances in general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations have expanded and improved our understanding of the dynamics of black-hole accretion disks. However, current simulations do not capture the thermodynamics of electrons in the low density accreting plasma. This poses a significant challenge in predicting accretion flow images and spectra from first principles. Because of this, simplified emission models have often been used, with widely different configurations (e.g., disk- versus jet-dominated emission), and were able to account for the observed spectral properties of accreting black-holes. Exploring the large parameter space introduced by such models, however, requires significant computational power that exceeds conventional computational facilities. In this paper, we use GRay, a fast GPU-based ray-tracing algorithm, on the GPU cluster El Gato, to compute images and spectra for a set of six general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations with different magnetic field configurations and black-hole spins. We also employ two different parametric models for the plasma thermodynamics in each of the simulations. We show that, if only the spectral properties of Sgr A* are used, all twelve models tested here can fit the spectra equally well. However, when combined with the measurement of the image size of the emission using the Event Horizon Telescope, current observations rule out all models with strong funnel emission, because the funnels are typically very extended. Our study shows that images of accretion flows with horizon-scale resolution offer a powerful tool in understanding accretion flows around black-holes and their thermodynamic properties.

Magnetic-field-dependent angular distributions and linear polarizations of emissions from the $2p^53s~^3P_2$ state in Ne-like ions

We studied the effect of an external magnetic field on the angular distributions and the linear polarizations of emissions from the $2s^22p^53s~^3P^o_2$ state in Ne-like ions. Since a B-dependent E1 decay channel is opened by the magnetic field and competes with the inherent M2 transition, the angular distributions and the linear polarizations strongly depend on the magnetic field strength (B). As an example, we illustrated the effect in Ne-like Mg. The B-dependent angular distributions and linear polarization degrees can also be considered as a tool for diagnostics of the magnetic field in plasmas.

Relativistic effects on the hyperfine structures of 2p4(3P)3p 2Do, 4Do and 4Po in 19F I

The hyperfine interaction constants of the 2p4(3P)3p 2Do_{3/2,5/2}, 4Do_{1/2-7/2} and 4Po_{1/2-5/2} levels in neutral fluorine are investigated theoretically. Large-scale calculations are carried out using the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) and Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF) methods. In the framework of the MCHF approach, the relativistic effects are taken into account in the Breit-Pauli approximation using non relativistic orbitals. In the fully relativistic approach, the orbitals are optimized using the Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian with correlation models inspired by the non relativistic calculations. Higher-order excitations are captured through multireference configuration interaction calculations including the Breit interaction. In a third (intermediate) approach, the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian matrix is diagonalized in a relativistic configuration space built with non relativistic MCHF radial functions converted into Dirac spinors using the Pauli approximation. The magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants calculated with the three relativistic models are consistent and reveal unexpectedly large effects of relativity for 2Do_{5/2}, 4Po_{3/2} and 4Po_{5/2}. The agreement with the few available experimental values is satisfactory. The strong J-dependence of relativistic corrections on the hyperfine constants is investigated through the detailed analysis of the orbital, spin-dipole and contact relative contributions calculated with the non relativistic magnetic dipole operator.

The effect of an external magnetic field on the determination of E1M1 two-photon decay rates in Be-like ions

In this work we report on ab initio theoretical results for the magnetic field induced 2s2p ^3P_0 - 2s^2 ^1S_0 E1 transition for ions in the beryllium isoelectronic sequence between Z=5 and 92. It has been proposed that the rate of the E1M1 two-photon transition 2s2p ^3P_0 - 2s^2 ^1S_0 can be extracted from the lifetime of the ^3P_0 state in Be-like ions with zero nuclear spin by employing resonant recombination in a storage-ring. This experimental approach involves a perturbing external magnetic field. The effect of this field needs to be evaluated in order to properly extract the two-photon rate from the measured decay curves. The magnetic field induced transition rates are carefully evaluated and it is shown that, with a typical storage-ring field strength, it is dominant or of the same order as the E1M1 rate for low- and mid-Z ions. Results for several field strengths and ions are presented and we also give a simple Z-dependent formula for the rate. We estimate the uncertainties of our model to be within 5% for low- and mid-Z ions, and slightly larger for more highly charged ions. Furthermore we evaluate the importance of including both perturber states, ^3P_1 and ^1P_1, and it is shown that excluding the influence of the ^1P_1 perturber overestimates the rate by up to 26% for the mid-Z ions.

Theoretical investigations on magnetic field induced $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ transitions in Ne-like ions without nuclear spin

We report theoretical results for magnetic field induced $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ E1 transitions in Ne-like ions with zero nuclear spin (I=0) between Mg III and Zn XXI as well as in Ne I. We demonstrate that it is important to include both ``perturber'' states $2p^53s^1P_1$ and $2p^53s^3P_1$ in order to produce reliable transition rates. Furthermore, we investigate the trends of the rates along the isoelectronic sequence of the $2p^53s^3P_{0,2} - 2p^6^1S_0$ transitions and their competition with the $2p^53s^3P_0 - 2p^53s^3P_1$ M1 and the $2p^53s^3P_2 - 2p^6^1S_0$ M2 decays. For the $2p^53s^3P_0$ state the magnetic field induced transition becomes the dominant decay channel for the light elements even in a relatively weak magnetic field, and it will therefore prove useful in diagnostics of the strength of magnetic fields in different plasmas. The influence of an external magnetic field on the lifetime of the $2p^53s^3P_2$ state is much smaller but still observable for the ions near the neutral end of the sequence. As a special case, the magnetic field effect on the lifetimes of $2p^53s^3P_{0,2}$ states of neutral $^{20}$Ne is discussed. It is found that the lifetimes are drastically reduced by a magnetic field, which may be an underlying reason for the discrepancies in the lifetime of the $2p^53s^3P_2$ state between experiment (14.73(14) s) and theory (17.63 s).

Effects of the electron correlation and Breit and hyperfine interactions on the lifetime of the 2p$^5$3s states in neutral neon

In the framework of the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, we investigate the transition properties of four excited states in the $2p^53s$ configuration of neutral neon. The electron correlation effects are taken into account systematically by using the active space approach. The effect of higher-order correlation on fine structures is shown. We also study the influence of the Breit interaction and find that it reduces the oscillator strength of the $^3P^o_1 - ^1S_0$ transition by 17%. It turns out that the inclusion of the Breit interaction is essential even for such a light atomic system. Our ab initio calculated line strengths, oscillator strengths and transition rates are compared with other theoretical values and experimental measurements. Good agreement is found except for the $^3P^o_2 - ^1S_0$ M2 transition for which discrepancies of around 15% between theories and experiments remain. In addition, the impact of hyperfine interactions on the lifetimes of the $^3P^o_0$ and $^3P^o_2$ metastable states is investigated for the $^{21}$Ne isotope (I=3/2). We find that hyperfine interactions reduce the lifetimes drastically. For the $^3P^o_0$ state the lifetime is decreased by a factor of 630.

Mass- and field-shift isotope parameters for the $2s - 2p$ resonance doublet of lithium-like ions

It was recently shown that dielectronic recombination measurements can be used for accurately inferring changes in the nuclear mean-square charge radii of highly-charged lithium-like neodymium [Brandau et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 073201 (2008)]. To make use of this method to derive information about the nuclear charge distribution for other elements and isotopes, accurate electronic isotope shift parameters are required. In this work, we calculate and discuss the relativistic mass- and field-shift factors for the two $2s ^{2}S_{1/2} - 2p ^{2}P^{o}_{1/2,3/2}$ transitions along the lithium isoelectronic sequence. Based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock method, the electron correlation and the Breit interaction are taken into account systematically. The analysis of the isotope shifts for these two transitions along the isoelectronic sequence demonstrates the importance and competition between the mass shifts and the field shifts.

$M_F$-dependent Hyperfine Induced Transition Rates in an External Magnetic Field for Be-like $^{47}$Ti$^{18+}$

Hyperfine induced $2s2p~^3P_0 \rightarrow 2s^2~^1S_0$ transition rates in an external magnetic field for Be-like $^{47}$Ti were calculated based on the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock method. It was found that the transition probability is dependent on the magnetic quantum number $M_F$ of the excited state, even in the weak field. The present investigation clarified that the difference of the hyperfine induced transition rate of Be-like Ti ions between experiment [Schippers {\sl et al.}, Phys Rev Lett {\bf 98}, (2007) 033001(4)] and theory does not result from the influence of external magnetic field.

Interference effects in hyperfine induced $2s2s ^3P_0, ^3P_2 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ transitions of Be-like ions

The hyperfine induced $2s2p ^3P_0, ^3P_2 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ E1 transition probabilities of Be-like ions were calculated using grasp2K based on multi-configuration Dirac-Fock method and HFST packages. It was found that the hyperfine quenching rates are strongly affected by the interference for low-Z Be-like ions, especially for $2s2p ^3P_0 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ transition. In particular, the trends of interference effects with atomic number $Z$ in such two transitions are not monotone. The strongest interference effect occurs near Z=7 for $2s2p ^3P_0 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ E1 transition, and near Z=9 for $2s2p ^3P_2 \to 2s^2 ^1S_0$ E1 transition.

Hyperfine induced $1s2s ^1S_0 \to 1s^2 ^1S_0$ M1 transition of He-like ions

Hyperfine induced $1s2s ^1S_0 \to 1s^2 ^1S_0$ M1 transition probabilities of He-like ions have been calculated from relativistic configuration interaction wavefunctions including the frequency independent Breit interaction and QED effects. Present results for {$^{151}$}Eu and {$^{155}$}Gd are in good agreement with previous calculations [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 63}, 054105 (2001)]. Electronic data are given in terms of a general scaling law in $Z$ that, given isotopic nuclear spin and magnetic moment, allows hyperfine induced decay rates to be estimated for any isotope. The results should be helpful for future experimental investigations on QED and parity non-conservation effects.
