Umbilic hypersurfaces of constant sigma-k curvature in the Heisenberg group

We study immersed, connected, umbilic hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$ with $n$ $\geq $ $2.$ We show that such a hypersurface, if closed, must be rotationally invariant up to a Heisenberg translation. Moreover, we prove that, among others, Pansu spheres are the only such spheres with positive constant sigma-k curvature up to Heisenberg translations.

Umbilicity and characterization of Pansu spheres in the Heisenberg group

For $n\geq 2$ we define a notion of umbilicity for hypersurfaces in the Heisenberg group $H_{n}$. We classify umbilic hypersurfaces in some cases, and prove that Pansu spheres are the only umbilic spheres with positive constant $p$(or horizontal)-mean curvature in $H_{n}$ up to Heisenberg translations.

Isoperimetric domains in homogeneous three-manifolds and the isoperimetric constant of the Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$

In this paper we prove that isoperimetric sets in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ are topological balls. We also prove that in three-dimensional homogeneous spheres isopermetric sets are either two-spheres or symmetric genus-one tori. We then apply our first result to the three-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$, characterizing the isoperimetric sets and constants for a family of Riemannian adapted metrics. Using $Γ$-convergence of the perimeter functionals, we also settle an isoperimetric conjecture in $\mathsf{H}^1$ posed by P.Pansu.

A positive mass theorem in three dimensional Cauchy-Riemann geometry

We define an ADM-like mass, called p-mass, for an asymptotically flat pseudohermitian manifold. The p-mass for the blow-up of a compact pseudohermitian manifold (with no boundary) is identified with the first nontrivial coefficient in the expansion of the Green function for the CR Laplacian. We deduce an integral formula for the p-mass, and we reduce its positivity to a solution of Kohn's equation. We prove that the p-mass is non-negative for (blow-ups of) compact 3-manifolds of positive Tanaka-Webster class and with non-negative CR Paneitz operator. Under these assumptions, we also characterize the zero mass case as the standard three dimensional CR sphere. We then show the existence of (non-embeddable) CR 3-manifolds having nonpositive Paneitz operator or negative p-mass through a second variation formula. Finally, we apply our main result to find solutions of the CR Yamabe problem with minimal energy.

Flows and a tangency condition for embeddable CR structures in dimension 3

We study the fillability (or embeddability) of 3-dimensional $CR$ structures under the geometric flows. Suppose we can solve a certain second order equation for the geometric quantity associated to the flow. Then we prove that if the initial $CR$ structure is fillable, then it keeps having the same property as long as the flow has a solution. We discuss the situation for the torsion flow and the Cartan flow. In the second part, we show that the above mentioned second order operator is used to express a tangency condition for the space of all fillable or embeddable $CR$ structures at one embedded in $\mathbb{C}^{2}.$

Uniqueness of generalized p-area minimizers and integrability of a horizontal normal in the Heisenberg group

We study the uniqueness of generalized $p$-minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group. The generalized $p$-area of a graph defined by $u$ reads $\int |\nabla u+\vec{F}| + Hu$. If $u$ and $v$ are two minimizers for the generalized $p$-area satisfying the same Dirichlet boundary condition, then we can only get $N_{\vec{F}}(u)$ $=$ $N_{\vec{F}}(v)$ (on the nonsingular set) where $N_{\vec{F}}(w)$ $:=$ $\frac{\nabla w+\vec{F}}{|\nabla w+\vec{F}|}.$ To conclude $u$ $=$ $v$ (or $\nabla u$ $=$ $\nabla v)$, it is not straightforward as in the Riemannian case, but requires some special argument in general. In this paper, for a generalized area functional including $p$-area, we prove that $N_{\vec{F}}(u)$ $=$ $N_{\vec{F}}(v)$ implies $\nabla u$ $=$ $\nabla v$ in dimension $\geq $ 3 under some rank condition on derivatives of $\vec{F}$ or the nonintegrability condition of contact form associated to $u$ or $v$. Note that in dimension 2 ($n=1),$ the above statement is no longer true. Inspired by an equation for the horizontal normal $N_{\vec{F}}(u),$ we study the integrability for a unit vector to be the horizontal normal of a graph. We find a Codazzi-like equation together with this equation to form an integrability condition.

Uniformization of spherical CR manifolds

Let $M$ be a closed (compact with no boundary) spherical $CR$ manifold of dimension $2n+1$. Let $\widetilde{M}$ be the universal covering of $M.$ Let $% Φ$ denote a $CR$ developing map {equation*} Φ:\widetilde{M}\rightarrow S^{2n+1} {equation*}% where $S^{2n+1}$ is the standard unit sphere in complex $n+1$-space $C^{n+1}$% . Suppose that the $CR$ Yamabe invariant of $M$ is positive. Then we show that $Φ$ is injective for $n\geq 3$. In the case $n=2$, we also show that $Φ$ is injective under the condition: $s(M)<1$. It then follows that $M$ is uniformizable.

Variations of generalized area functionals and p-area minimizers of bounded variation in the Heisenberg group

We prove the existence of a continuous $BV$ minimizer with $C^{0}$ boundary value for the $p$-area (pseudohermitian or horizontal area) in a parabolically convex bounded domain. We extend the domain of the area functional from $BV$ functions to vector-valued measures. Our main purpose is to study the first and second variations of such a generalized area functional including the contribution of the singular part. By giving examples in Riemannian and pseudohermitian geometries, we illustrate several known results in a unified way. We show the contribution of the singular curve in the first and second variations of the $p$-area for a surface in an arbitrary pseudohermitian $3$-manifold.

A Codazzi-like equation and the singular set for $C^{1}$ smooth surfaces in the Heisenberg group

In this paper, we study the structure of the singular set for a $C^{1}$ smooth surface in the $3$-dimensional Heisenberg group $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$. We discover a Codazzi-like equation for the $p$-area element along the characteristic curves on the surface. Information obtained from this ordinary differential equation helps us to analyze the local configuration of the singular set and the characteristic curves. In particular, we can estimate the size and obtain the regularity of the singular set. We understand the global structure of the singular set through a Hopf-type index theorem. We also justify that Codazzi-like equation by proving a fundamental theorem for local surfaces in $\boldsymbol{H}_{1}$.

Regularity of C^{1} smooth surfaces with prescribed p-mean curvature in the Heisenberg group

We consider a $C^{1}$ smooth surface with prescribed $p$(or $H$)-mean curvature in the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group. Assuming only the prescribed $p$-mean curvature $H\in C^{0},$ we show that any characteristic curve is $C^{2}$ smooth and its (line) curvature equals $-H$ in the nonsingular domain$.$ By introducing characteristic coordinates and invoking the jump formulas along characteristic curves, we can prove that the Legendrian (or horizontal) normal gains one more derivative. Therefore the seed curves are $C^{2}$ smooth. We also obtain the uniqueness of characteristic and seed curves passing through a common point under some mild conditions, respectively. These results can be applied to more general situations.

Existence and Uniqueness for P-Area Minimizers in the Heisenberg Group

In \cite{CHMY04}, we studied $p$-mean curvature and the associated $p$-minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group from the viewpoint of PDE and differential geometry. In this paper, we look into the problem through the variational formulation. We study a generalized $p$-area and associated ($p$-) minimizers in general dimensions. We prove the existence and investigate the uniqueness of minimizers. Since this is reduced to solving a degenerate elliptic equation, we need to consider the effect of the singular set and this requires a careful study. We define the notion of weak solution and prove that in a certain Sobolev space, a weak solution is a minimizer and vice versa. We also give many interesting examples in dimension 2. An intriguing point is that, in dimension 2, a $C^2$-smooth solution from the PDE viewpoint may not be a minimizer. However, this statement is true for higher dimensions due to the relative smallness of the size of the singular set.

A Fourth Order Curvature Flow on a CR 3-manifold

Let $(\mathbf{M}^{3},J,θ_{0})$ be a closed pseudohermitian 3-manifold. Suppose the associated torsion vanishes and the associated $Q$-curvature has no kernel part with respect to the associated Paneitz operator. On such a background pseudohermitian 3-manifold, we study the change of the contact form according to a certain version of normalized $Q$-curvature flow. This is a fourth order evolution equation. We prove that the solution exists for all time and converges smoothly to a contact form of zero $Q$ -curvature. We also consider other background conditions and obtain a priori bounds up to high orders for the solution.

Properly embedded and immersed minimal surfaces in the Heisenberg group

We study properly embedded and immersed p(pseudohermitian)-minimal surfaces in the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group. From the recent work of Cheng, Hwang, Malchiodi, and Yang, we learn that such surfaces must be ruled surfaces. There are two types of such surfaces: band type and annulus type according to their topology. We give an explicit expression for these surfaces. Among band types there is a class of properly embedded p-minimal surfaces of so called helicoid type. We classify all the helicoid type p-minimal surfaces. This class of p-minimal surfaces includes all the entire p-minimal graphs (except contact planes) over any plane. Moreover, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for such a p-minimal surface to have no singular points. For general complete immersed p-minimal surfaces, we prove a half space theorem and give a criterion for the properness.

Minimal surfaces in pseudohermitian geometry

We consider surfaces immersed in three-dimensional pseudohermitian manifolds. We define the notion of (p-)mean curvature and of the associated (p-)minimal surfaces, extending some concepts previously given for the (flat) Heisenberg group. We interpret the p-mean curvature not only as the tangential sublaplacian of a defining function, but also as the curvature of a characteristic curve, and as a quantity in terms of calibration geometry. As a differential equation, the p-minimal surface equation is degenerate (hyperbolic and elliptic). To analyze the singular set, we formulate some {\em extension} theorems, which describe how the characteristic curves meet the singular set. This allows us to classify the entire solutions to this equation and to solve a Bernstein-type problem (for graphs over the $xy$-plane) in the Heisenberg group $H_1$. In $H_{1}$, identified with the Euclidean space $R^{3}$, the p-minimal surfaces are classical ruled surfaces with the rulings generated by Legendrian lines. We also prove a uniqueness theorem for the Dirichlet problem under a condition on the size of the singular set in two dimensions, and generalize to higher dimensions without any size control condition. We also show that there are no closed, connected, $C^{2}$ smoothly immersed constant p-mean curvature or p-minimal surfaces of genus greater than one in the standard $S^{3}.$ This fact continues to hold when $S^{3}$ is replaced by a general spherical pseudohermitian 3-manifold.

Deformation of fillable CR structures

We study the fillability (or embeddability) of $CR$ structures under the gauge-fixed Cartan flow. We prove that if the initial $CR$ structure is fillable with nowhere vanishing Tanaka-Webster curvature and free torsion, then it keeps having the same property after a short time. In the Appendix, we show the uniqueness of the solution to the gauge-fixed Cartan flow.

Contact topology and CR geometry in three dimensions

We study low-dimensional problems in topology and geometry via a study of contact and Cauchy-Riemann ($CR$) structures. A contact structure is called spherical if it admits a compatible spherical $CR$ structure. We will talk about spherical contact structures and our analytic tool, an evolution equation of $CR$ structures. We argue that solving such an equation for the standard contact 3-sphere is related to the Smale conjecture in 3-topology. Furthermore, we propose a contact analogue of Ray-Singer's analytic torsion. This ''contact torsion'' is expected to be able to distinguish among ''spherical space forms'' $\{Γ\backslash S^{3}\}$ as contact manifolds. We also propose the study of a certain kind of monopole equation associated with a contact structure. In view of the recently developed theory of contact homology algebras, we will discuss its overall impact on our study.

The Harnack estimate for the Yamabe flow on CR manifolds of dimension 3

We deform the contact form by the amount of the Tanaka-Webster curvature on a closed spherical $CR$ three-manifold. We show that if a contact form evolves with free torsion and positive Tanaka-Webster curvature as initial data, then a certain Harnack inequality for the Tanaka-Webster curvature holds.

Rigidity of automorphisms and spherical CR structures

We establish Bochner-type formulas for operators related to $CR$ automorphisms and spherical $CR$ structures. From such formulas, we draw conclusions about rigidity by making assumptions on the Tanaka-Webster curvature and torsion.
