Cylinders in singular del Pezzo surfaces

For each del Pezzo surface $S$ with du Val singularities, we determine whether it admits a $(-K_S)$-polar cylinder or not. If it allows one, then we present an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor $D$ that is $\mathbb{Q}$-linearly equivalent to $-K_S$ and such that the open set $S\setminus\mathrm{Supp}(D)$ is a cylinder. As a corollary, we classify all the del Pezzo surfaces with du Val singularities that admit nontrivial $\mathbb{G}_a$-actions on their affine cones defined by their anticanonical divisors.

Slopes of smooth curves on Fano manifolds

Ross and Thomas introduced the concept of slope stability to study K-stability, which has conjectural relation with the existence of constant scalar curvature Kähler metric. This paper presents a study of slope stability of Fano manifolds of dimension $n\geq 3$ with respect to smooth curves. The question turns out to be easy for curves of genus $\geq 1$ and the interest lies in the case of smooth rational curves. Our main result classifies completely the cases when a polarized Fano manifold $(X, -K_X)$ is not slope stable with respect to a smooth curve. Our result also states that a Fano threefold $X$ with Picard number 1 is slope stable with respect to every smooth curve unless $X$ is the projective space.

Exceptional del Pezzo hypersurfaces

We compute global log canonical thresholds of a large class of quasismooth well-formed del Pezzo weighted hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}(a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$. As a corollary we obtain the existence of orbifold Kähler--Einstein metrics on many of them, and classify exceptional and weakly exceptional quasismooth well-formed del Pezzo weighted hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}(a_{1},a_{2},a_{3},a_{4})$.

Weighted Fano threefold hypersurfaces

We study birational transformations into elliptic fibrations and birational automorphisms of quasismooth anticanonically embedded weighted Fano 3-fold hypersurfaces having terminal singularities classified by A.R. Iano-Fletcher, J. Johnson, J. Kollar, and M. Reid.

Sextic Double Solids

We prove non-rationality and birational super-rigidity of a Q-factorial double cover X of P^3 ramified along a sextic surface with at most simple double points. We also show that the condition #|Sing(X)| < 15 implies Q-factoriality of X. In particular, every double cover of P^3 with at most 14 simple double points is non-rational and not birationally isomorphic to a conic bundle. All the birational transformations of X into elliptic fibrations and into Fano 3-folds with canonical singularities are classified. We consider some relevant problems over fields of finite characteristic. When X is defined over a number field F we prove that the set of rational points on the 3-fold X is potentially dense if Sing(X) is not empty.

The geometry of quantum learning

Concept learning provides a natural framework in which to place the problems solved by the quantum algorithms of Bernstein-Vazirani and Grover. By combining the tools used in these algorithms--quantum fast transforms and amplitude amplification--with a novel (in this context) tool--a solution method for geometrical optimization problems--we derive a general technique for quantum concept learning. We name this technique "Amplified Impatient Learning" and apply it to construct quantum algorithms solving two new problems: BATTLESHIP and MAJORITY, more efficiently than is possible classically.

A note on del Pezzo fibrations of degree 1

We study del Pezzo fibrations of degree 1 with terminal singularities. A connection between singularities on del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1 and Kodaira's classification of elliptic singular fibers will be studied in this paper. By this investigation we obtain several results on birational maps of del Pezzo fibrations of degree 1 with terminal singularities.

Log Canonical Thresholds and Generalized Eckardt Points

Let $X$ be a smooth hypersurface of degree $n\geq 3$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We prove that the log canonical threshold of $H\in|-K_X|$ is at least $\frac{n-1}{n}$. Under the assumption of the Log minimal model program, we also prove that a hyperplane section $H$ of $X$ is a cone in $\mathbb{P}^{n-1}$ over a smooth hypersurface of degree $n$ in $\mathbb{P}^{n-2}$ if and only if the log canonical threshold of $H$ is $\frac{n-1}{n}$.
