Integrative Learning of Structured High-Dimensional Data from Multiple Datasets

Integrative learning of multiple datasets has the potential to mitigate the challenge of small $n$ and large $p$ that is often encountered in analysis of big biomedical data such as genomics data. Detection of weak yet important signals can be enhanced by jointly selecting features for all datasets. However, the set of important features may not always be the same across all datasets. Although some existing integrative learning methods allow heterogeneous sparsity structure where a subset of datasets can have zero coefficients for some selected features, they tend to yield reduced efficiency, reinstating the problem of losing weak important signals. We propose a new integrative learning approach which can not only aggregate important signals well in homogeneous sparsity structure, but also substantially alleviate the problem of losing weak important signals in heterogeneous sparsity structure. Our approach exploits a priori known graphical structure of features and encourages joint selection of features that are connected in the graph. Integrating such prior information over multiple datasets enhances the power, while also accounting for the heterogeneity across datasets. Theoretical properties of the proposed method are investigated. We also demonstrate the limitations of existing approaches and the superiority of our method using a simulation study and analysis of gene expression data from ADNI.

Evidence for an Algebra of $\boldsymbol{G_2}$ Instantons

In this short note, we present some evidence towards the existence of an algebra of BPS $G_2$ instantons. These are instantonic configurations that govern the partition functions of 7d SYM theories on local $G_2$ holonomy manifolds $\mathcal X$. To shed light on such structure, we begin investigating the relation with parent 4d $\mathcal N=1$ theories obtained by geometric engineering M-theory on $\mathcal X$. The main point of this paper is to substantiate the following dream: the holomorphic sector of such theories on multi-centered Taub-NUT spaces gives rise to an algebra whose characters organise the $G_2$ instanton partition function. As a first step towards this program, we argue by string duality that a multitude of geometries $\mathcal X$ exist that are dual to well-known 4d SCFTs arising from D3 branes probes of CY cones: all these models are amenable to analysis along the lines suggested by Dijkgraaf, Gukov, Neitzke and Vafa in the context of topological M-theory. Moreover, we discuss an interesting relation to Costello's twisted M-theory, which arises at local patches, and is a key ingredient in identifying the relevant algebras.

The Global Form of Flavor Symmetries and 2-Group Symmetries in 5d SCFTs

2-group symmetries arise when 1-form symmetries and 0-form symmetries of a theory mix with each other under group multiplication. We discover the existence of 2-group symmetries in 5d N=1 abelian gauge theories arising on the (non-extended) Coulomb branch of 5d superconformal field theories (SCFTs), leading us to argue that the UV 5d SCFT itself admits a 2-group symmetry. Furthermore, our analysis determines the global forms of the 0-form flavor symmetry groups of 5d SCFTs, irrespective of whether or not the 5d SCFT admits a 1-form symmetry. As a concrete application of our method, we analyze 2-group symmetries of all 5d SCFTs, which reduce in the IR, after performing mass deformations, to 5d N=1 non-abelian gauge theories with simple, simply connected gauge groups. For rank-1 Seiberg theories, we check that our predictions for the flavor symmetry groups match with the superconformal and ray indices available in the literature. We also comment on the mixed 't Hooft anomaly between 1-form and 0-form symmetries arising in 5d N=1 non-abelian gauge theories and its relation to the 2-groups.

OPE of line defects in 5d $E_n$ SCFT

5d ray index is the 5d superconformal index in the presence of a ray-like defect. An elementary ray defect flows to a fundamental Wilson ray in IR gauge theory. In 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theory(SCFT) with $E_n$ global symmetry, we compute the ray index associated with an adjoint Wilson ray. We show that the operators that appear in the index are non-trivially charged under the center of the global symmetry $E_n$. The charge under the center being twice compared with the center charge carried by the elementary ray operator indicates a non-trivial OPE between the ray-like defects in the UV SCFT.

A domain wall in twisted M-theory

We study a four-dimensional domain wall in twisted M-theory. The domain wall is engineered by intersecting D6 branes in the type IIA frame. We identify the classical algebra of operators on the domain wall in terms of a higher vertex operator algebra, which describes the holomorphic subsector of a 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric field theory, and compute the associated mode algebra. We conjecture that the quantum deformation of the classical algebra is isomorphic to the bulk algebra of operators from which we establish twisted holography of the domain wall.

Twisted holography of defect fusions

In the twisted M-theory setting, various types of fusion of M2 and M5 branes induce coproducts between the algebra of operators on M2 branes and the algebra of operators on M5 branes. By doing a perturbative computation in the gravity side, which is captured by the 5d topological holomorphic $U(1)$ Chern-Simons theory, we reproduce the non-perturbative coproducts.

Feynman diagrams and $Ω$-deformed M-theory

We derive the simplest commutation relations of operator algebras associated to M2 branes and an M5 brane in the $Ω$-deformed M-theory, which is a natural set-up for Twisted holography. Feynman diagram 1-loop computations in the twisted-holographic dual side reproduce the same algebraic relations.

On the Quantization of Seiberg-Witten Geometry

We propose a double quantization of four-dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ Seiberg-Witten geometry, for all classical gauge groups and a wide variety of matter content. This can be understood as a set of certain non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson identities, following the program initiated by Nekrasov [arXiv:1512.05388]. The construction relies on the computation of the instanton partition function of the gauge theory on the so-called $Ω$-background on $\mathbb{R}^4$, in the presence of half-BPS codimension 4 defects. The two quantization parameters are identified as the two parameters of this background. The Seiberg-Witten curve of each theory is recovered in the flat space limit. Whenever possible, we motivate our construction from type IIA string theory.

Poisson vertex algebras in supersymmetric field theories

A large class of supersymmetric quantum field theories, including all theories with $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetry in three dimensions and theories with $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetry in four dimensions, possess topological-holomorphic sectors. We formulate Poisson vertex algebras in such topological-holomorphic sectors and discuss some examples. For a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theory, the associated Poisson vertex algebra is the classical limit of a vertex algebra generated by a subset of local operators of the theory.

Nonrelativistic String Theory in Background Fields

Nonrelativistic string theory is a unitary, ultraviolet finite quantum gravity theory with a nonrelativistic string spectrum. The vertex operators of the worldsheet theory determine the spacetime geometry of nonrelativistic string theory, known as the string Newton-Cartan geometry. We compute the Weyl anomaly of the nonrelativistic string worldsheet sigma model describing strings propagating in a string Newton-Cartan geometry, Kalb-Ramond and dilaton background. We derive the equations of motion that dictate the backgrounds on which nonrelativistic string theory can be consistently defined quantum mechanically. The equations of motion we find from our study of the conformal anomaly of the worldsheet theory are to nonrelativistic string theory what the (super)gravity equations of motion are to relativistic string theory.

Chiral algebras from Ω-deformation

In the presence of an $Ω$-deformation, local operators generate a chiral algebra in the topological-holomorphic twist of a four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetric field theory. We show that for a unitary $\mathcal{N} = 2$ superconformal field theory, the chiral algebra thus defined is isomorphic to the one introduced by Beem et al. Our definition of the chiral algebra covers nonconformal theories with insertions of suitable surface defects.

2d small N=4 Long-multiplet superconformal block

We study 2d N=4 superconformal field theories, focusing on its application on numerical bootstrap study. We derive the superconformal block by utilizing the global part of the super Virasoro algebra and set up the crossing equations for the non-BPS long-multiplet 4-point function. Along the way, we build global N=4 superconformal short and long multiplets, and compute all possible 2,3-point functions of long-multiplets that are needed to construct the superconformal blocks and the crossing equations. Since we consider a long-multiplet 4-point function, the number of crossing equations is huge and we expect it to give a strong constraint than the usual superconformal bootstrap analysis, which relies on BPS 4-point functions. In addition, we present an alternative way to derive crossing equations using N=4 superspace and comment on a puzzle.

Food for Thought: Analyzing Public Opinion on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program

This project explores public opinion on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in news and social media outlets, and tracks elected representatives' voting records on issues relating to SNAP and food insecurity. We used machine learning, sentiment analysis, and text mining to analyze national and state level coverage of SNAP in order to gauge perceptions of the program over time across these outlets. Results indicate that the majority of news coverage has negative sentiment, more partisan news outlets have more extreme sentiment, and that clustering of negative reporting on SNAP occurs in the Midwest. Our final results and tools will be displayed in an on-line application that the ACFB Advocacy team can use to inform their communication to relevant stakeholders.

An Index for Ray Operators in 5d $E_n$ SCFTs

We construct an index for BPS operators supported on a ray in five dimensional superconformal field theories with exceptional global symmetries. We compute the $E_n$ representations (for $n=2,\dots,7$) of operators of low spin, thus verifying that while the expression for the index is only SO$(2n-2)\times$U(1) invariant, the index itself exhibits the full $E_n$ symmetry (at least up to the order we expanded). The ray operators we studied in 5d can be viewed as generalizations of operators constructed in a Yang-Mills theory with fundamental matter by attaching an open Wilson line to a quark. For $n\le 7$, in contrast to local operators, they carry nontrivial charge under the $\mathbb{Z}_{9-n}\subset E_n$ center of the global symmetry. The representations that appear in the ray operator index are therefore different, for $n\le 7$, from those appearing in the previously computed superconformal index. For $3\le n\le 7$, we find that the leading term in the index is a character of a minuscule representation of $E_n$. We also discuss the case $n=8$, which presents a unique technical challenge, and remains an open problem.
