Ideal strength of random alloys from first-principles theory

The all-electron exact muffin-tin orbitals method in combination with the coherent-potential appproximation has been employed to investigate the ideal tensile strengths of elemental V, Mo solids and V- and Mo-based random solid solutions. The present ideal tensile strengths, calculated assuming isotropic Poisson contraction, are 16.1, 26.7 and 37.6 GPa for bcc V in the [001], [111] and [110] directions, respectively, and 26.7 GPa for bcc Mo in the [001] direction, which are all in good agreement with the available theoretical data. When a few percent Tc is introduced in Mo, it is found that the ideal strength decreases in the [001] direction. For the V-based alloys, Cr increases and Ti decreases the ideal tensile strength in all principal directions. Adding the same concentration of Cr and Ti to V leads to ternary alloys with similar ideal strength values as that of pure V. The alloying effects on the ideal strength is explained using the electronic band structure.

Graphene Nucleation on Transition Metal Surface: Structure Transformation and Role of the Metal Step Edge

The nucleation of graphene on a transition metal (TM) surface, either on a terrace or near a step edge, is systematically explored using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and applying the two-dimensional (2D) crystal nucleation theory. Careful optimization of the supported carbon clusters, CN (with size N ranging from 1 to 24), on the Ni(111) surface indicates a ground state structure transformation from a one-dimensional (1D) C chain to a two-dimensional (2D) sp2 C network at N ~ 10-12. Furthermore, the crucial parameters controlling graphene growth on the metal surface, nucleation barrier, nucleus size, and the nucleation rate on a terrace or near a step edge, are calculated. In agreement with numerous experimental observations, our analysis shows that graphene nucleation near a metal step edge is superior to that on a terrace. Based on our analysis, we propose the use of seeded graphene to synthesize high-quality graphene in large area.

Tailorable acceptor ${\rm C}_{60-n}{\rm B}_{n}$ and donor ${\rm C}_{60-m}{\rm N}_{m}$ pairs for molecular electronics

Our first-principles calculations demonstrate that ${\rm C}_{60-n}{\rm B}_{n}$ and ${\rm C}_{60-m}{\rm N}_{m}$ molecules can be engineered as the acceptors and donors, respectively, which are needed for molecular electronics, by properly controlling the number $n$ and $m$ of the substitutional dopants in ${\rm C}_{60}$. As an example, we show that acceptor ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ and donor ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ are promising components for molecular rectifiers, carbon nanotube-based $p$-type, $n$-type, $n$-$p$-$n$ and $p$-$n$-$p$ transistors and $p$-$n$ junctions.

Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of heterofullerenes C48B12

Bonding, electric (hyper)polarizability, vibrational and magnetic properties of heterofullerene ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ are studied by first-principles calculations. Infrared- and Raman-active vibrational frequencies of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ are assigned. Eight $^{13}$C and 2 $^{11}$B NMR spectral signals of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ are characterized. The first-order hyperpolarizability in ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ is zero because of the inversion symmetry. The average second-order hyperpolarizability of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ is about 180% larger than that of ${\rm C}_{60}$. Our results suggest that ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm B}_{12}$ is also a candidate for photonic and optical limiting applications because of the enhanced third-order optical nonlinearities.

Electronic and magnetic properties of multishell Co nanowires coated with Cu

The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of ultrathin Cu-coated Co nanowires have been studied by using empirical genetic algorithm simulations and a tight-binding $spd$ model Hamiltonian in the unrestricted Hartree-Hock approximation. For some specific stoichiometric compositions, Cu atoms occupy the surface, while Co atoms prefer to stay in the interior, forming the perfect coated multishell structures. The outer Cu layers lead to substantial variations of the magnetic moment of interior Co atoms, depending on the structure and thickness of Cu layers. In particular, single Co atom row in the center of nanowire is found to be nonmagnetic when coated with two Cu layers. All the other Co nanowires in the coated Cu shell are still magnetic but the magnetic moments are reduced as compared with Co nanowires without Cu coating. The interaction between Cu and Co atoms induces nonzero magnetic moment for Cu atoms.

First-principles calculations of the structural, electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of C_{60} and C_{48}N_{12}: a comparative study

In this work, we perform first-principles calculations of the structural, electronic, vibrational and magnetic properties of a novel ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ azafullerene. Full geometrical optimization shows that ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ is characterized by several distinguishing features: only one nitrogen atom per pentagon, two nitrogen atoms preferentially sitting in one hexagon, ${\rm S}_{6}$ symmetry, 6 unique nitrogen-carbon and 9 unique carbon-carbon bond lengths. The highest occupied molecular orbital of ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ is a doubly degenerate level of $a_{g}$ symmetry and its lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is a nondegenerate level of $a_{u}$ symmetry. Vibrational frequency analysis predicts that ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ has in total 116 vibrational modes: 58 infrared-active and 58 Raman-active modes. ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ is also characterized by 8 $^{13}{\rm C}$ and 2 $^{15}{\rm N}$ NMR spectral signals. Compared to ${\rm C}_{60}$, ${\rm C}_{48}{\rm N}_{12}$ shows an enhanced third-order optical nonlinearities which implies potential applications in optical limiting and photonics.

Quantum transport properties of ultrathin silver nanowires

The quantum transport properties of the ultrathin silver nanowires are investigated. For a perfect crystalline nanowire with four atoms per unit cell, three conduction channels are found, corresponding to three $s$ bands crossing the Fermi level. One conductance channel is disrupted by a single-atom defect, either adding or removing one atom. Quantum interference effect leads to oscillation of conductance versus the inter-defect distance. In the presence of multiple-atom defect, one conduction channel remains robust at Fermi level regardless the details of defect configuration. The histogram of conductance calculated for a finite nanowire (seven atoms per cross section) with a large number of random defect configurations agrees well with recent experiment.

Melting behavior of ultrathin titanium nanowires

The thermal stability and melting behavior of ultrathin titanium nanowires with multi-shell cylindrical structures are studied using molecular dynamic simulation. The melting temperatures of titanium nanowires show remarkable dependence on wire sizes and structures. For the nanowire thinner than 1.2 nm, there is no clear characteristic of first-order phase transition during the melting, implying a coexistence of solid and liquid phases due to finite size effect. An interesting structural transformation from helical multi-shell cylindrical to bulk-like rectangular is observed in the melting process of a thicker hexagonal nanowire with 1.7 nm diameter.

Binding energies and electronic structures of adsorbed titanium chains on carbon nanotubes

We have studied the binding energies and electronic structures of metal (Ti, Al, Au) chains adsorbed on single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) using first principles methods. Our calculations have shown that titanium is much more favored energetically over gold and aluminum to form a continuous chain on a variety of SWNTs. The interaction between titanium and carbon nanotube significantly modifies the electronic structures around Fermi energy for both zigzag and armchair tubes. The delocalized 3d electrons from the titanium chain generate additional states in the band gap regions of the semiconducting tubes, transforming them into metals.

Magic structures of helical multi-shell zirconium nanowires

The structures of free-standing zirconium nanowires with 0.6$-$2.8 nm in diameter are systematically studied by using genetic algorithm simulations with a tight-binding many body potential. Several multi-shell growth sequences with cylindrical structures are obtained. These multi-shell structures are composed of coaxial atomic shells with the three- and four-strands helical, centered pentagonal and hexagonal, and parallel double-chain-core curved surface epitaxy. Under the same growth sequence, the numbers of atomic strands in inner- and outer-shell show even-odd coupling and usually differ by five. The size and structure dependence of angular correlation functions and vibrational properties of zirconium nanowire are also discussed.

Does the melting behavior in ultrathin metallic nanowires begin from the surface ?

Surface melting temperature is well-known significantly lower than the bulk melting point. But we find that the interior melting temperature in ultrathin nanowires is lower than that of the surface melting . The thermal stability of helical multi-walled cylindrical gold nanowires is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The melting temperature of gold nanowires is lower than the bulk value, but higher than that of gold nanoclusters. An interesting interior melting is revealed in the gold nanowires and the thermodynamics is closely related to interior structures. The melting starts from the interior atoms, while the surface melting occurs at relatively higher temperature. We propose that the surface melting represents the overall melting in ultrathin metallic nanowires.

Novel structures of Co-Cu bimetallic clusters and their magnetic properties

The structural and magnetic properties of Co$_{18-m}$Cu$_m$ ($0\leq m\leq 18$) clusters are investigated with a genetic algorithm and a $spd$-band model Hamiltonian in the unrestricted Hartree-Hock approximation respectively. In general, Cu atoms tend to occupy the surface, while Co atoms prefer to the interior of the clusters. Layered structures appear in some clusters with given stoichiometric compositions. The introduction of Cu atoms leads to large increase of the magnetic moment of Co-rich circumstance and nearly zero magnetism of the Cu-rich ambient. The interaction between Cu and Co atoms induces nonzero magnetic moment for Cu atoms. The total magnetic moments tend to decrease with the increase of Cu atoms. However, some particular large magnetic moment are found to be closely related to the structures. The environment of Cu and Co atoms have a dominant effect on the magnetism of the cluster.

Polarizabilities of germanium clusters

Polarizabilities of Ge$_n$ clusters with 2 to 25 atoms are calculated using coupled-perturbation Hartree-Fock (CPHF) and finite field (FF) method within density functional theory. The polarizabilities of the Ge$_n$ clusters increase rapidly in the size range of 2 to 5 atoms and then fluctuate around the bulk value. The polarizabilities are sensitively dependent on the cluster geometries and electronic structures. The large HOMO-LUMO gap may lead to the small polarizability. As compared with the compact structure and diamond structure, the prolate cluster structure corresponds to a larger polarizability.

Density functional study of Au$_n$ (n=2-20) clusters: lowest-energy structures and electronic properties

We have investigated the lowest-energy structures and electronic properties of the Au$_n$(n=2-20) clusters based on density functional theory (DFT) with local density approximation. The small Au$_n$ clusters adopt planar structures up to n=6. Tabular cage structures are preferred in the range of n=10-14 and a structural transition from tabular cage-like structure to compact near-spherical structure is found around n=15. The most stable configurations obtained for Au$_{13}$ and Au$_{19}$ clusters are amorphous instead of icosahedral or fcc-like, while the electronic density of states sensitively depend on the cluster geometry. Dramatic odd-even alternative behaviors are obtained in the relative stability, HOMO-LUMO gaps and ionization potentials of gold clusters. The size evolution of electronic properties is discussed and the theoretical ionization potentials of Au$_n$ clusters compare well with experiments.

Mass spectrometric and first principles study of Al$_n$C$^-$ clusters

We study the carbon-dope aluminum clusters by using time-of-flight mass spectrum experiments and {\em ab initio} calculations. Mass abundance distributions are obtained for anionic aluminum and aluminum-carbon mixed clusters. Besides the well-known magic aluminum clusters such as Al$_{13}^-$ and Al$_{23}^-$, Al$_7$C$^-$ cluster is found to be particularly stable among those Al$_n$C$^-$ clusters. Density functional calculations are performed to determine the ground state structures of Al$_n$C$^-$ clusters. Our results show that the Al$_7$C$^-$ is a magic cluster with extremely high stability, which might serve as building block of the cluster-assembled materials.

Work functions of pristine and alkali-metal intercalated carbon nanotubes and bundles

The work functions (WF) of single-walled carbon nanotubes and bundles are studied using first principles methods. For individual metallic tubes, the WF is independent of the chirality and increase slightly with tube diameter. For semiconducting tubes, the WF (as defined by the HOMO energy) decreases rapidly. The WF of nanotube bundles ($\sim$ 5 eV) shows no clear dependence on the tube size and chirality, slightly higher than individual tubes. Calculations on finite tubes show no substantial difference in the tube end and the side wall. Upon alkali-metal intercalation, the WF decreases dramatically and the electronic states near the Fermi level are significantly modified. The metallic and semiconducting nanotubes bundles become indistinguishable.

Gas molecule adsorption in carbon nanotubes and nanotube bundles

We studied various gas molecules (NO$_2$, O$_2$, NH$_3$, N$_2$, CO$_2$, CH$_4$, H$_2$O, H$_2$, Ar) on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and bundles using first principles methods. The equilibrium position, adsorption energy, charge transfer, and electronic band structures are obtained for different kinds of SWNTs. Most molecules adsorb weakly on SWNTs and can be either charge donor or acceptor to the nanotubes. We find the gas adsorption on the bundle interstitial and groove sties is stronger than that on an individual tube. The electronic properties of SWNTs are sensitive to the adsorption of certain gases such as NO$_2$ and O$_2$. Charge transfer and gas-induced charge fluctuation might significantly affect the transport properties of SWNTs. Our theoretical results are consistent with recent experiments.

Pressure-induced metallization in solid boron

Different phases of solid boron under high pressure are studied by first principles calculations. The $α$-B$_{12}$ structure is found to be stable up to 270 GPa. Its semiconductor band gap (1.72 eV) decreases continuously to zero around 160 GPa, where the material transforms to a weak metal. The metallicity, as measured by the density of states at the Fermi level, enhances as the pressure is further increased. The pressure-induced metallization can be attributed to the enhanced boron-boron interactions that cause bands overlap. These results are consist with the recently observed metallization and the associated superconductivity of bulk boron under high pressure (M.I.Eremets et al, Science{\bf 293}, 272(2001)).
