Self-consistent Effective-one-body theory for spinless binaries based on post-Minkowskian approximation I: Hamiltonian and decoupled equation for $ψ^B_{4}$

To build a self-consistent effective-one-body (EOB) theory, in which the Hamiltonian, radiation-reaction force and waveform for the "plus" and "cross" modes of the gravitational wave should be based on the same effective background spacetime, the key step is to look for the decoupled equation for $ψ^B_{4}=\ddot{h}_{+}-i\ddot{h}_{\times}$, which seems a very difficult task because there are non-vanishing tetrad components of the tracefree Ricci tensor for such spacetime. Fortunately, based on an effective spacetime obtained in this paper by using the post-Minkowskian (PM) approximation, we find the decoupled equation for $ψ^B_{4}$ by dividing the perturbation part of the metric into the odd and even parities. With the effective metric and decoupled equation at hand, we set up a frame of self-consistent EOB model for spinless binaries.

Self-consistent effective-one-body theory for spinning binaries based on post-Minkowskian approximation

This paper extends the research on the self-consistent effective-one-body theory of a real spinless two-body system based on the post-Minkowskian approximation (Science China, 65, 100411, (2022)) to the case of a binary system for the spinning black holes. An effective rotating metric and an improved Hamiltonian for the spinning black hole binaries were constructed. The decoupled equation for the null tetrad component of the gravitational perturbed Weyl tensor $ψ^B_{4}$ in the effective rotating spacetime is found with the help of the gauge transform characteristics of the Weyl tensors. The decoupled equation is then separated between radial and angular variables in the slowly rotating background spacetime, and a formal solution of $ψ^B_{4}$ is obtained. On this basis, the formal expressions of the radiation reaction force and the waveform for the ``plus'' and ``cross'' modes of the gravitational wave are presented. These results, obtained in the same effective spacetime, constitute a self-consistent effective-one-body theory for the spinning black hole binaries based on the post-Minkowskian approximation.

Images of Kerr-MOG black holes surrounded by geometrically thick magnetized equilibrium tori

We adopt general relativistic ray-tracing (GRRT) schemes to study images of Kerr-MOG black holes surrounded by geometrically thick magnetized equilibrium tori, which belong to steady-state solutions of thick accretion disks within the framework of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD). The black hole possesses an extra dimensionless MOG parameter described its deviation from usual Kerr one. Our results show that the presence of the MOG parameter leads to smaller disks in size, but enhances the total flux density and peak brightness in their images. Combining with observation data of black hole M87* from the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), we make a constraint on parameters of the Kerr-MOG black hole and find that the presence of the MOG parameter broadens the allowable range of black hole spin.

Entanglement dynamics in $κ$-deformed spacetime

We treat two identical and mutually independent two-level atoms that are coupled to a quantum field as an open quantum system. The master equation that governs their evolution is derived by tracing over the degree of freedom of the field. With this, we compare the entanglement dynamics of the two atoms moving with different trajectories in $κ$-deformed and Minkowski spacetimes. Notably, when the environment-induced interatomic interaction does not exist, the entanglement dynamics of two static atoms in $κ$-deformed spacetime are reduced to that in Minkowski spacetime in the case that the spacetime deformation parameter $κ$ is sufficiently large as theoretically predicted. However, if the atoms undergo relativistic motion, regardless of whether inertial or non-inertial, their entanglement dynamics in $κ$-deformed spacetime behave differently from that in Minkowski spacetime even when $κ$ is large. We investigate various types of entanglement behavior, such as decay and generation, and discuss how different relativistic motions, such as uniform motion in a straight line and circular motion, amplify the differences in the entanglement dynamics between the $κ$-deformed and Minkowski spacetime cases. In addition, when the environment-induced interatomic interaction is considered, we find that it may also enhance the differences in the entanglement dynamics between these two spacetimes. Thus, in principle, one can tell whether she/he is in $κ$-deformed or Minkowski spacetime by checking the entanglement behavior between two atoms in certain circumstances.

Gravitational waves from extreme mass ratio inspirals in Kerr-MOG spacetimes

This work elaborates on a detailed analysis of the novel characteristics of gravitational waves (GWs) generated by extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) within the framework of modified gravity (MOG). Our study begins by exploring the geometrical and dynamical properties of the Kerr-MOG spacetime. We employ the numerical kludge (NK) method for waveform simulations and reveal that the parameter $α$, representing deviations from general relativity (GR), significantly impacts the frequencies of geodesic orbits and, consequently, the EMRI waveforms. However, the waveform confusion problem remains mainly unresolved, posing a challenge in distinguishing between the underlying gravitational theories based on the observed EMRI waveforms. Notably, by incorporating the effects of radiation reaction, we observe a substantial reduction in the waveform overlap over time. This reduction could enhance our ability to discern between different waveforms over an extended period.

Constraining a disformal Schwarzschild black hole in DHOST theories with the orbit of the S2 star

With the observed data of the S2 orbit around the black hole Sgr A$^*$ and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo method, we make a constraint on parameters of a disformal Schwarzschild black hole in quadratic degenerate higher-order scalar-tensor (DHOST) theories. This black hole belongs to a class of non-stealth solutions and owns an extra disformal parameter described the deviation from general relativity. Our results show that the best fit value of the disformal parameter is positive. However, in the range of $1σ$, we also find that general relativity remains to be consistent with the observation of the S2 orbit.

Gravitational wave fluxes on generic orbits in near-extreme Kerr spacetime: higher spin and large eccentricity

To obtain the waveform template of gravitational waves (GWs), substantial computational resources and exceedingly high precision are often required. In the previous study [JCAP 11 (2023) 070], we efficiently and accurately calculate GW fluxes of a particle in circular orbits around a Schwarzschild black hole using the confluent Heun function. We extend the previous method to calculate the asymptotic GW fluxes from a particle in generic orbits around a near-extreme Kerr black hole. Especially when dealing with the computational difficulties in large eccentricity $e=0.9$, higher spin $a=0.999$, higher harmonic modes, and strong-field regions, our results are much better than the results of the numerical integration method based on the Mano-Suzuki-Takasugi method.

Kerr-MOG-(A)dS black hole and its shadow in scalar-tensor-vector gravity theory

The scalar-tensor-vector gravity (STVG) theory has attracted significant interest due to its ability to effectively address the issue of galaxy rotation curves and clusters of galaxies without considering the influence of dark matter. In this paper, we construct rotating black hole solutions with a cosmological constant in the STVG theory (i.e., Kerr-MOG-(A)dS black hole solutions), where the import of a gravitational charge as a source modifies the gravitational constant, determined by $ G=G_{\text{N}}(1+α) $. For Kerr-MOG-dS spacetime, the observer is situated at a specific location within the domain of outer communication, rather than being located infinitely far away. Since black hole shadows are shaped by light propagation in spacetime, the interaction between the MOG parameter and the cosmological constant is expected to produce novel effects on these shadows. As the cosmological constant $Λ$ increases, the apparent size of the black hole shadow decreases. Additionally, the shadow expands with an increase in the MOG parameter $α$, reaching a maximum at a certain value, and its shape becomes more rounded under an arbitrary rotation parameter, which leads to degeneracy between different black hole parameters. However, by employing numerical ray-tracing techniques, we have found that gravitational lensing and the frame-dragging effect effectively distinguish this degeneracy. Our work contributes to a deeper understanding of black holes in modified gravity, their observational signatures, and constraints.

The ring-shaped shadow of rotating naked singularity with a complete photon sphere

We investigate the shadows of Konoplya-Zhidenko naked singularity. In the spacetime of Konoplya-Zhidenko naked singularity, not only can unstable retrograde light ring (LR) exist, but also unstable prograde LR, leading to the formation of a complete photon sphere (PS). Due to the absence of an event horizon, a dark disc-shaped shadow does not appear; instead, a ring-shaped shadow is observed. The ring-shaped shadow appears as an infinite number of relativistic Einstein rings in the image of the naked singularity. For some parameter values, only the unstable retrograde LR exists, resulting in an incomplete unstable PS and consequently giving rise to the arc-shaped shadow for Konoplya-Zhidenko naked singularity. The shadow of Konoplya-Zhidenko naked singularity gradually shifts to the right as the rotation parameter $a$ increases, and gradually becomes smaller as the deformation parameter $|η|$ increases. Moreover, the stable LRs and stable photon spherical orbits can also exist in Konoplya-Zhidenko naked singularity spacetime, but they have no effect on the image of the naked singularity. This study demonstrates that rotating naked singularity can exhibit not only an arc-shaped shadow but also a ring-shaped shadow.

Energy flux and waveform of gravitational wave generated by coalescing slow-spinning binary system in effective one-body theory

We extend our research on the energy flux and waveform characteristics of gravitational waves generated by merging nonspinning binary black holes through self-consistent effective one-body theory \cite{L2023} to include binary systems with slowly spinning black holes. Initially, we decompose the equation for the null tetrad component of the gravitationally perturbed Weyl tensor $ψ^B_{4}$ into radial and angular parts, leveraging the second-order approximation of the rotation parameter $a$. Subsequently, we derive an analytical solution for the radial equation and observe that our results are contingent upon the parameters $a_2$, $a_3$ and $a$, which represent the second- and third-order correction parameters, respectively. Ultimately, we calculate the energy flux, the radiation-reaction force and the waveform for the ``plus" and ``cross" modes of the gravitational waves generated by merging slowly spinning binary black holes.

Energy flux and waveforms by coalescing spinless binary system in effective one-body theory

We present a study on the energy radiation rate and waveforms of the gravitational wave generated by coalescing spinless binary systems up to the third post-Minkowskian approximation in the effective one-body theory. To derive an analytical expansion of the null tetrad components of the gravitational perturbed Weyl tensor $\varPsi_{4}$ in the effective spacetime, we utilize the method proposed by Sasaki $et$ $al.$ During this investigation, we discover more general integral formulas that provide a theoretical framework for computing the results in any order. Subsequently, we successfully compute the energy radiation rate and waveforms of the gravitational wave, which include the results of the Schwarzschild case and the correction terms resulting from the dimensionless parameters $a_{2}$ and $a_{3}$ in the effective metric.

Kerr black hole shadows from the axion-photon coupling

We have investigated the motion for photons in the Kerr black hole spacetime under the axion-photon coupling. The birefringence phenomena arising from the axion-photon coupling can be negligible in the weak coupling approximation because the leading-order contributions to the equations of motion come from the square term of the coupling parameter. We find that the coupling parameter makes the size of shadows slightly increase for arbitrary spin parameter. For the rapid rotating black hole case with a larger coupling, we find that there exist a pedicel-like structure appeared in the left of the D-type like shadows.Comparing the shadow size of the Kerr black hole with the shadow size of the Sgr A* and M87* black holes, we find that there is room for such a theoretical model of the axion-photon coupling.

Lorentz violation induces isospectrality breaking in Einstein-Bumblebee gravity theory

In this paper, we investigate the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a Lorentz-violating spacetime, factoring in a cosmological constant, within the framework of Einstein-Bumblebee gravity. Our findings reveal that the interaction of spacetime with an anisotropic bumblebee field imparts distinct contributions to the axial and polar sectors of the vector perturbations. This subsequently breaks the isospectrality typically observed in vector modes. Numerical evidence strongly indicates isospectral breaking in the vector modes of Einstein-Bumblebee black holes: a pronounced breakage in the real part of the frequencies, while the imaginary component seems less affected. This isospectral breaking indicates the existence of two different waveforms in the Ringdown phase of the black hole, which provides a potential signal of quantum gravity observable in current experiments.

The Quasinormal Modes and Isospectrality of Bardeen (Anti-) de Sitter Black Holes

Black holes (BHs) exhibiting coordinate singularities but lacking essential singularities throughout the entire spacetime are referred to as regular black holes (RBHs). The initial formulation of RBHs was presented by Bardeen, who considered the Einstein equation coupled with a nonlinear electromagnetic field. In this study, we investigate the gravitational perturbations, including the axial and polar sectors, of the Bardeen (Anti-) de Sitter black holes. We derive the master equations with source terms for both axial and polar perturbations, and subsequently compute the quasinormal modes (QNMs) through numerical methods. For the Bardeen de Sitter black hole, we employ the 6th-order WKB approach. The numerical results reveal that the isospectrality is broken in this case. Conversely, for Bardeen Anti-de Sitter black holes, the QNM frequencies are calculated by using the HH method.

Geometrically thick equilibrium tori around a Schwarzschild black hole in swirling universes

We study geometrically thick non-self gravitating equilibrium tori orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole immersed in swirling universes. This solution is axially symmetric and non-asymptotically flat, and its north and south hemispheres spin in opposite directions. Due to repulsive effects arising from the swirl of the background spacetime, the equilibrium torus exists only in the case with the small swirling parameter. With the increase of the swirling parameter, the disk structure becomes small and the excretion of matter near the black hole becomes strong. Moreover, the odd $Z_2$ symmetry of spacetimes originating from the swirling parameter yields that the orientation of closed equipotential surfaces deviates away from the horizontal axis and the corresponding disk does not longer possess the symmetry with respect to the equatorial plane. These significant features could help to further understand the equilibrium tori and geometrically thick accretion disks around black holes in swirling universes.

Geometrically thick equilibrium tori around a dyonic black hole with quasi-topological electromagnetism

We study geometrically thick and non-self gravitating equilibrium tori orbiting a static spherically symmetric dyonic black hole with quasi-topological electromagnetism. Our results show that the electric and magnetic charges together with the coupling parameter in the quasi-topological electromagnetism lead to a much richer class of equilibrium tori. There are a range of parameters which allow for the existence of double tori. The properties of double equilibrium tori become far richer. There exist transitions between single torus and double tori solutions as we change the specific angular momentum of the fluid. These properties of equilibrium tori could help to understand the dyonic black hole and its thick accretion disk.

Kerr black hole shadows cast by extraordinary light rays with Weyl corrections

We investigate the equation of motion for photons with Weyl corrections in a Kerr black hole spacetime in a small coupling case. Our results show that Weyl corrections yield phenomena of birefringence. The light rays propagating in the spacetime are separated into the ordinary rays and the extraordinary rays, and the propagation of the latter depends on the corrections. We probe the effects of Weyl corrections on the Kerr black hole shadows casted by the extraordinary rays and find that such corrections result in a weak stretching or squeezing in the vertical direction for the black hole shadows. Finally, we also study the change of the length of the Near-Horizon Extremal Kerr line (NHEK line) with Weyl corrections. These features could help us to understand the electrodynamics with Weyl corrections from black hole shadows.

Direct Characteristic-Function Tomography of the Quantum States of Quantum Fields

Herein, we propose a novel strategy for implementing a direct readout of the symmetric characteristic function of the quantum states of quantum fields without the involvement of idealized measurements, an aspect that has always been deemed ill-defined in quantum field theory. This proposed scheme relies on the quantum control and measurements of an auxiliary qubit locally coupled to the quantum fields. By mapping the expectation values of both the real and imaginary parts of the field displacement operator to the qubit states, the qubit's readout provides complete information regarding the symmetric characteristic function. We characterize our technique by applying it to the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger (thermal) and squeezed states of a quantum scalar field. In addition, we have discussed general applications of this approach to analogue-gravity systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates, within the scope of state-of-the-art experimental capabilities. This proposed strategy may serve as an essential in understanding and optimizing the control of quantum fields for relativistic quantum information applications, particularly in exploring the interplay between gravity and quantum, for example, the relation to locality, causality, and information.
