Residual Symmetries and Scalar Multiplet Vacuum Alignment in Non-Abelian Flavour Models

We demonstrate that, upon minimizing a renormalizable, single-scalar potential invariant under a non-Abelian symmetry, special orientations in the associated vacuum alignment of the scalar multiplet correspond to the preservation of a discrete residual flavour symmetry in the broken phase of the theory. Conversely, we show that these special scalar alignments are perturbed when additional Lagrangian operators (e.g. renormalizable, multi-flavon operators and/or effective, higher-dimensional operators) are present that break said residual symmetry, leading to a vacuum reorientation and phenomenological consequences. We therefore construct a one-to-one correspondence principle between broken residual symmetries and vacuum alignment corrections, providing a mechanism to identify (and correct) a subtle but persistent form of phenomenologically relevant fine-tuning embedded in -- but often ignored by -- most successful non-Abelian flavour models. We first establish this correspondence in a set of toy models based on the S4 permutation symmetry, and then apply the lessons learned to the more realistic A4 Altarelli-Feruglio and $\Delta(27)$ Universal Texture Zero models.

Revisiting strong-coupling determinations from $e^+ e^-$ event shapes

We reassess the theoretical uncertainties of strong-coupling determinations from a global fit to the $e^+ e^-$ thrust data, focusing in particular on the scheme dependence associated with the applied renormalon-cancellation prescription and on the choice of scale parameters that are used to estimate higher-order perturbative corrections in all sectors of the calculation.

Froggatt-Nielsen Meets the SMEFT

We study the matching of Froggatt-Nielsen theories of flavour onto the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), upon integrating out a heavy Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) scalar `flavon' whose vacuum expectation value breaks an Abelian flavour symmetry at energies $\Lambda_\text{FN}$ well above the electroweak scale, $\Lambda_\text{FN} > \Lambda_\text{SM}$. We include matching contributions to the infrared $d_\text{SM}=6$ (Warsaw basis) SMEFT sourced from ultraviolet contact terms suppressed up to order $1 / \Lambda_\text{UV}^2$ in the Froggatt-Nielsen Lagrangian, where $\Lambda_\text{UV} > \Lambda_\text{FN}$ is an arbitrary deep-ultraviolet scale where further unspecified BSM particles are dynamical. This includes tree-level (one-loop) ultraviolet diagrams with $d_{\text{FN}}=6$ $(5)$ effective vertices. We first do so with a toy model, but then generalize our findings to arbitrary Frogatt-Nielsen charges. Our results indicate a rich and non-trivial signature of Froggatt-Nielsen theories on the (otherwise) model-independent operators of the SMEFT, and we briefly speculate on extending our analysis to broader classes of BSM flavour models, e.g. non-Abelian and/or gauged theories. We thus take an important step towards determining how to use rapidly developing theoretical and experimental SMEFT technologies to gain unambiguous insight into the SM's longstanding fermion flavour puzzle.

Effects of Renormalon Scheme and Perturbative Scale Choices on Determinations of the Strong Coupling from $e^+e^-$ Event Shapes

We study the role of renormalon cancellation schemes and perturbative scale choices in extractions of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ and the leading non-perturbative shift parameter $\Omega_1$ from resummed predictions of the $e^+e^-$ event shape thrust. We calculate the thrust distribution to N$^{3}$LL$^\prime$ resummed accuracy in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) matched to the fixed-order $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$ prediction, and perform a new high-statistics computation of the $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^3)$ matching in EERAD3, although we do not include the latter in our final $\alpha_s$ fits due to some observed systematics that require further investigation. We are primarily interested in testing the phenomenological impact sourced from varying amongst three renormalon cancellation schemes and two sets of perturbative scale profile choices. We then perform a global fit to available data spanning center-of-mass energies between 35-207 GeV in each scenario. Relevant subsets of our results are consistent with prior SCET-based extractions of $\alpha_s(m_Z)$, but we are also led to a number of novel observations. Notably, we find that the combined effect of altering the renormalon cancellation scheme and profile parameters can lead to few-percent-level impacts on the extracted values in the $\alpha_s-\Omega_1$ plane, indicating a potentially important systematic theory uncertainty that should be accounted for. We also observe that fits performed over windows dominated by dijet events are typically of a higher quality than those that extend into the far tails of the distributions, possibly motivating future fits focused more heavily in this region. Finally, we discuss how different estimates of the three-loop soft matching coefficient $c_{\tilde{S}}^3$ can also lead to measurable changes in the fitted $\lbrace \alpha_s, \Omega_1 \rbrace$ values.

Revisiting the Universal Texture Zero of Flavour: a Markov Chain Monte Carlo Analysis

We revisit the phenomenological predictions of the Universal Texture Zero (UTZ) model of flavour originally presented in arXiv:1710.01741, and update them in light of both improved experimental constraints and numerical analysis techniques. In particular, we have developed an in-house Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm to exhaustively explore the UTZ's viable parameter space, considering both leading- and next-to-leading contributions in the model's effective operator product expansion. We also extract -- for the first time -- reliable UTZ predictions for the (poorly constrained) leptonic CP-violating phases, and ratio observables that characterize neutrino masses probed by (e.g.) oscillation, $\beta$-decay, and cosmological processes. We therefore dramatically improve on the proof-in-principle phenomenological analysis originally presented in arXiv:1710.01741, and ultimately show that the UTZ remains a minimal, viable, and appealing theory of flavour. Our results also further demonstrate the potential of robustly examining multi-parameter flavour models with MCMC routines.

The Geometric $\nu$SMEFT: Operators and Connections

We write down a geometric realization of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) extended by $n_f$ flavours of light sterile neutrinos, a so-called geo$\nu$SMEFT. As with the geoSMEFT introduced by Helset, Martin and Trott, we show that a refactorization of the $\nu$SMEFT's operator product expansion is possible, such that two- and three-point composite operator forms are dressed with field-space connections composed of towers of Higgs dressings and symmetry generators, valid at \emph{all-orders} in the $\overline{v}_T/\Lambda$ expansion parameter of the EFT ($\overline{v}_T \equiv \sqrt{2\langle H^\dagger H\rangle}$) . These connections are parameterized by real Higgs coordinates and contribute to the field-space geometry of the ($\nu$)SM, with structure linked to the strength of Beyond-the-($\nu$)Standard Model physics encoded in $\overline{v}_T/\Lambda$. In addition to enumerating the relevant composite operators and associated connections, we briefly outline the route to calculating all-$\overline{v}_T/\Lambda$-orders amplitudes, including the flavor-invariant theory required to understand the neutrino mass-eigenstate basis geometrically.

LHC Signatures of $\tau$-Flavoured Vector Leptoquarks

We consider the phenomenological signatures of Simplified Models of Flavourful Leptoquarks, whose Beyond-the-Standard Model (SM) couplings to fermion generations occur via textures that are well motivated from a broad class of ultraviolet flavour models (which we briefly review). We place particular emphasis on the study of the vector leptoquark $\Delta_\mu$ with assignments $\left({\bf{3}}, {\bf{1}}, 2/3 \right)$ under the SM's gauge symmetry, $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$, which has the tantalising possibility of explaining both $\mathcal{R}_{K^{(\star)}}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{D^{(\star)}}$ anomalies. Upon performing global likelihood scans of the leptoquark's coupling parameter space, focusing in particular on models with tree-level couplings to a single charged lepton species, we then provide confidence intervals and benchmark points preferred by low(er)-energy flavour data. Finally, we use these constraints to further evaluate the (promising) Large Hadron Collider (LHC) detection prospects of pairs of $\tau$-flavoured $\Delta_\mu$, through their distinct (a)symmetric decay channels. Namely, we consider direct third-generation leptoquark and jets plus missing-energy searches at the LHC, which we find to be complementary. Depending on the simplified model under consideration, the direct searches constrain the $\Delta_\mu$ mass up to 1500-1770 GeV when the branching fraction of $\Delta_\mu$ is entirely to third-generation quarks (but are significantly reduced with decreased branching ratios to the third generation), whereas the missing-energy searches constrain the mass up to 1150-1700 GeV while being largely insensitive to the third-generation branching fraction.

Dirac Masses and Mixings in the (geo)SM(EFT) and Beyond

We report a set of exact formulae for computing Dirac masses, mixings, and CP-violation parameter(s) from 3$\times$3 Yukawa matrices $Y$ valid when $Y Y^\dagger \rightarrow U^\dagger \,Y Y^\dagger \, U$ under global $U(3)_{Q_L}$ flavour symmetry transformations $U$. The results apply to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) and its `geometric' realization (geoSMEFT). We thereby complete, in the Dirac flavour sector, the catalogue of geoSMEFT parameters derived at all orders in the $\sqrt{2 \langle H^\dagger H \rangle} / \Lambda$ expansion. The formalism is basis-independent, and can be applied to models with decoupled ultraviolet flavour dynamics, as well as to models whose infrared dynamics are not minimally flavour violating. We highlight these points with explicit examples and, as a further demonstration of the formalism's utility, we derive expressions for the renormalization group flow of quark masses, mixings, and CP-violation at all mass dimension and perturbative loop orders in the (geo)SM(EFT) and beyond.

No-go limitations on UV completions of the Neutrino Option

We discuss the possible origin of the Majorana mass scale(s) required for the "Neutrino Option" where the electroweak scale is generated simultaneously with light neutrino masses in a type-I seesaw model, by common dimension four interactions. We establish no-go constraints on the perturbative generation of the Majorana masses required due to global symmetries of the seesaw Lagrangian.

PeV Sterile Masses from D-Brane Instantons -- Motivating Stringy Neutrino Options?

We show that when sterile Majorana neutrino masses are generated non-perturbatively through instantonic interactions in certain classes of string compactifications (e.g. Type IIA orientifold models with intersecting D-branes), then the eigenvalue spectrum for the tree-level mass term $M_p$ can be within the preferred range of the Neutrino Option resolution to the electroweak (EW) hierarchy and neutrino mass problems of the Standard Model, i.e. $M_p \sim$ PeV. This mechanism holds without tuning for a broad range of string scales, thereby motivating a novel class of string-completed Neutrino Options spanning the light neutrino mass, EW, and deep ultraviolet scales.

Reconstructing Effective Lagrangians Embedding Residual Family Symmetries

We consider effective Lagrangians which, after electroweak- and family-symmetry breaking, yield fermionic mass matrices and/or other flavoured couplings exhibiting residual family symmetries (RFS). Thinking from the bottom up, these RFS intimately link ultraviolet (UV) Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) physics to infrared flavour phenomenology without direct reference to any (potentially unfalsifiable) UV dynamics. While this discussion is typically performed at the level of RFS group generators and the UV flavour groups they can close, we now also focus on the RFS-implied shape of the low-energy mass/coupling matrices. We then show how this information can be used to algorithmically guide the reconstruction of an effective Lagrangian, thereby forming top-down models realizing the typical bottom-up phenomenological conclusions. As a first application we take results from scans of finite groups capable of controlling (through their RFS) CKM or PMNS mixing within the SM alone. We then extend this to recently studied scenarios where RFS also control special patterns of leptoquark couplings, thus providing proof-in-principle completions for such `Simplified Models of Flavourful Leptoquarks.'

Generic dijet soft functions at two-loop order: uncorrelated emissions

We extend our algorithm for automating the calculation of two-loop dijet soft functions to observables that do not obey the non-Abelian exponentiation theorem, i.e. to those that require an independent calculation of the uncorrelated-emission contribution. As the singularity structure of uncorrelated double emissions differs substantially from the one for correlated emissions, we introduce a novel phase-space parametrisation that isolates the corresponding divergences. The resulting integrals are implemented in SoftSERVE 1.0, which we release alongside of this work, and which we supplement by a regulator that is consistent with the rapidity renormalisation group framework. Using our automated setup, we confirm existing results for various jet-veto observables and provide a novel prediction for the soft-drop jet-grooming algorithm.

FCNC-free multi-Higgs-doublet models from broken family symmetries

We demonstrate how residual flavour symmetries, infrared signatures of symmetry breaking in complete models of flavour, can naturally forbid (or limit in a flavour specific way) flavour-changing neutral currents (FCNC) in multi-Higgs-doublet models (MHDM) without using mass hierarchies. We first review how this model-independent mechanism can control the fermionic mixing patterns of the Standard Model, and then implement the symmetries in the Yukawa sector of MHDM, which allows us to intimately connect the predictivity of a given flavour model with its ability to sequester FCNC. Finally, after discussing various subtleties of the approach, we sketch an $A_4$ toy model that realises an explicit example of these simplified constructions.

Higher-Order Sudakov Resummation in Coupled Gauge Theories

We consider the higher-order resummation of Sudakov double logarithms in the presence of multiple coupled gauge interactions. The associated evolution equations depend on the coupled $\beta$ functions of two (or more) coupling constants $\alpha_a$ and $\alpha_b$, as well as anomalous dimensions that have joint perturbative series in $\alpha_a$ and $\alpha_b$. We discuss possible strategies for solving the system of evolution equations that arises. As an example, we obtain the complete three-loop (NNLL) QCD$\otimes$QED Sudakov evolution factor. Our results also readily apply to the joint higher-order resummation of electroweak and QCD Sudakov logarithms. As part of our analysis we also revisit the case of a single gauge interaction (pure QCD), and study the numerical differences and reliability of various methods for evaluating the Sudakov evolution factor at higher orders. We find that the approximations involved in deriving commonly used analytic expressions for the evolution kernel can induce noticeable numerical differences of several percent or more at low scales, exceeding the perturbative precision at N$^3$LL and in some cases even NNLL. Therefore, one should be cautious when using approximate analytic evolution kernels for high-precision analyses.

Finite Family Groups for Fermionic and Leptoquark Mixing Patterns

We employ a bottom-up and model-independent technique to search for non-Abelian discrete flavour symmetries capable of predicting viable CKM and PMNS matrices alongside of special patterns of leptoquark couplings. In particular, we analyze patterns derived when an ultra-violet flavour theory is assumed to break to global Abelian symmetries in Standard Model fermion masses and new Yukawa-like terms sourced by the leptoquark representation. The phenomenology of different classes of these `simplified models' can be explored without reference to explicit model-building assumptions, e.g. the nature of flavour symmetry breaking or any additional field content associated to it, and are also capable of explaining hints of lepton non-universality in $\mathcal{R}_{K^{(\star)}}$. Assuming experimentally interesting CKM and PMNS matrix elements, our algorithm finds an abundance of predictive non-Abelian flavour groups and therefore provides promising directions for future model building in the flavoured leptoquark space, regardless of whether the anomalous $\mathcal{R}_{K^{(\star)}}$ measurements withstand further experimental scrutiny.

Simplified Models of Flavourful Leptoquarks

We study the implications of single leptoquark extensions of the Standard Model (SM) under the assumption that their enhanced Yukawa sectors are invariant under global Abelian flavour symmetries already present in SM mass terms. Such symmetries, assumed to be the `residual' subgroups of an ultra-violet flavour theory, have previously been considered in order to predict fermionic mixing angles. Here we focus instead on their effect on the novel flavour structures sourced by the leptoquark representations that address the present ${R}_{K^{(\star)}}$ anomalies in semileptonic rare $B$-decays. Combined with existing flavour data, the residual symmetries prove to be extremely constraining; we find that the (quark-lepton) leptoquark Yukawa couplings fall within $\mathcal{O}(10)$ highly predictive patterns, each with only a single free parameter, when `normal' (SM-like) hierarchies are assumed. In addition, proton decay for the scalar SU(2) triplet representation is naturally avoided in the residual symmetry approach without relying on further model building. Our results indicate that a simultaneous explanation for the ${R}_{K^{(\star)}}$ anomalies and the flavour puzzle may be achieved in a simplified, model-independent formalism.

Generic dijet soft functions at two-loop order: correlated emissions

We present a systematic algorithm for the perturbative computation of soft functions that are defined in terms of two light-like Wilson lines. Our method is based on a universal parametrisation of the phase-space integrals, which we use to isolate the singularities in Laplace space. The observable-dependent integrations can then be performed numerically, and they are implemented in the new, publicly available package SoftSERVE that we use to derive all of our numerical results. Our algorithm applies to both SCET-1 and SCET-2 soft functions, and in the current version it can be used to compute two out of three NNLO colour structures associated with the so-called correlated-emission contribution. We confirm existing two-loop results for about a dozen $e^+e^-$ and hadron-collider soft functions, and we obtain new predictions for the C-parameter as well as thrust-axis and broadening-axis angularities.

$e^+ e^-$ angularity distributions at NNLL$^\prime$ accuracy

We present predictions for the $e^{+}e^{-}$ event shape angularities at NNLL$^{\prime}$ resummed and $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^{2})$ matched accuracy and compare them to LEP data at center-of-mass energies $Q=91.2$ GeV and $Q=197$ GeV. We perform the resummation within the framework of Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, and make use of recent results for the two-loop angularity soft function. We determine the remaining NNLL$^{\prime}$ and $\mathcal{O}(\alpha_s^2)$ ingredients from a fit to the EVENT2 generator, and implement a shape function with a renormalon-free gap parameter to model non-perturbative effects. Using values of the strong coupling $\alpha_s(m_Z)$ and the universal non-perturbative shift parameter $\Omega_1$ that are consistent with those obtained in previous fits to the thrust and $C$-parameter distributions, we find excellent agreement between our predictions and the LEP data for all angularities with $a\in[-1,0.5]$. This provides a robust test of the predictions of QCD, factorization, and the universal scaling of the non-perturbative shift across different angularities. Promisingly, our results indicate that current degeneracies in the $\{\alpha_s(m_Z),\Omega_1\}$ parameter space could be be alleviated upon fitting these parameters to experimental data for the angularity distributions.
