Time-dependent Backgrounds in String Theory and Dualities

This thesis consists of two parts. The first part deals with gauge/gravity duality in the context of anti de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes with de Sitter (dS) boundary, which can be used to study issues concerning strongly coupled field theory on de Sitter space, such as the issue of vacuum ambiguity. By calculating the symmetric two point function of the strongly coupled ${\cal N} = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on de Sitter space, we show that the vacuum ambiguity persists at strong coupling. Furthermore, the extra ambiguity in the strong coupling correlator seems to suggest that transition between two different vacua is allowed. The second part of this thesis deals with the duality between the rolling tachyon backgrounds in superstring theory and the Dyson gas systems. This duality can be interpreted as a reformulation of non-BPS D-branes in superstring theory in terms of statistical systems in thermal equilibrium, whose description does not include time. We argue that even though the concept of time is absent in the statistical dual sitting at equilibrium, the notion of time can emerge at the large number of particles $N \rightarrow \infty$ limit.

Dynamics of disentanglement, density matrix and coherence in neutrino oscillations

In charged current weak interaction processes, neutrinos are produced in an entangled state with the charged lepton. This correlated state is disentangled by the measurement of the charged lepton in a detector at the production site. We study the dynamical aspects of disentanglement, propagation and detection, in particular the conditions under which the disentangled state is a coherent superposition of mass eigenstates. The appearance and disappearance far-detection processes are described from the time evolution of this disentangled "collapsed" state. The familiar quantum mechanical interpretation and factorization of the detection rate emerges when the quantum state is disentangled on time scales \emph{much shorter} than the inverse oscillation frequency, in which case the final detection rate factorizes in terms of the usual quantum mechanical transition probability provided the final density of states is insensitive to the neutrino energy difference. We suggest \emph{possible} corrections for short-baseline experiments. If the charged lepton is unobserved, neutrino oscillations and coherence are described in terms of a reduced density matrix obtained by tracing out an un-observed charged lepton. The diagonal elements in the mass basis describe the production of mass eigenstates whereas the off diagonal ones provide a measure of coherence. It is shown that coherences are of the same order of the diagonal terms on time scales up to the inverse oscillation frequency, beyond which the coherences oscillate as a result of the interference between mass eigenstates.

Unsterile-Active Neutrino Mixing

We consider a sterile neutrino to be an unparticle, namely an "unsterile" neutrino, and study its mixing with a canonical active neutrino via a see-saw mass matrix. There is no unitary transformation that diagonalizes the mixed propagator and a field redefinition is required. The unsterile-like propagating mode features a resonance for anomalous dimension between 0 and 1/3, but the complex pole disappears when the anomalous dimension is larger than 1/3. The active-like propagating mode is described by a stable pole, but inherits a non-vanishing spectral density above the unparticle threshold. We also find that the radiative decay width of the unsterile neutrino into the active neutrino (and a photon) via charged current loops is suppressed, and this suppression weakens the bound from the X-ray or soft gamma-ray background when one considers the unsterile neutrino to be a dark matter candidate.

Oscillation dynamics of active-unsterile neutrino mixing in a $2+\tilde{1}$ mixing scheme

We consider the possibility that sterile neutrinos exist and admit a description as unparticles; we call these {\em unsterile} neutrinos. We then examine the nature of neutrino oscillations in a model where an unsterile can mix with two active flavors with a very simple mass matrix of the see-saw type. Despite these simplifications, we find a number of remarkable features, all of which will occur generically when more realistic cases are considered. These include momentum dependent mixing angles, "invisible" decay widths for the unsterile-like mode, as well as the inheritance of a non-vanishing spectral density for the massive active-like modes. We also obtain the disappearance and appearance probabilities for the active-like neutrinos and find remarkable interference effects between the active and unsterile neutrinos as a consequence of threshold effects, yielding new oscillatory contributions with different oscillation lengths. These effects are only measurable on short baseline experiments because there both probabilities are suppressed as compared to mixing with a canonical sterile neutrino, thereby providing a diagnostics tool to discriminate unsterile from canonical sterile neutrinos. We conclude with a discussion of whether these new phenomena could aid in the reconciliation of the LSND and MiniBooNE results.

Vacuum Ambiguity in de Sitter Space at Strong Coupling

It is well known that in the weak coupling regime, quantum field theories in de Sitter space do not have a unique vacuum, but a class of vacua parametrized by a complex parameter $α$, i.e., the so-called $α$-vacua. In this article, using gauge/gravity duality, we calculate the symmetric two-point function of strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $dS_3$. We find that there is a class of de Sitter invariant vacua, parametrized by a set of complex parameters $\{α_ν\}$.

Unsterile-Active Neutrino Mixing: Consequences on Radiative Decay and Bounds from the X-ray Background

We consider a sterile neutrino to be an unparticle, namely an \emph{unsterile neutrino}, with anomalous dimension $η$ and study its mixing with a canonical active neutrino via a see-saw mass matrix. We show that there is \emph{no unitary} transformation that diagonalizes the mixed propagator and a field redefinition is required. The propagating or ``mass'' states correspond to an unsterile-like and active-like mode. The unsterile mode features a complex pole or resonance for $0 \leq η< 1/3$ with an ``invisible width'' which is the result of the decay of the unsterile mode into the active mode and the massless particles of the hidden conformal sector. For $η\geq 1/3$, the complex pole disappears, merging with the unparticle threshold. The active mode is described by a stable pole, but ``inherits'' a non-vanishing spectral density above the unparticle threshold as a consequence of the mixing. We find that the \emph{radiative} decay width of the unsterile neutrino into the active neutrino (and a photon) via charged current loops, is \emph{suppressed} by a factor $\sim \Big[2 \sin^2(θ_0) \frac{M^2}{Λ^2}\Big]^\fracη{1-η}$, where $θ_0$ is the mixing angle for $η=0$, $M$ is approximately the mass of the unsterile neutrino and $Λ\gg M$ is the unparticle-scale. The suppression of the radiative (visible) decay width of the sterile neutrino weakens the bound on the mass and mixing angle from the X-ray or soft gamma-ray background.

Unparticle-Higgs Mixing: MSW Resonances, See-saw Mechanism and Spinodal Instabilities

Motivated by slow-roll inflationary cosmology we study a scalar unparticle weakly coupled to a Higgs field in the broken symmetry phase. The mixing between the unparticle and the Higgs field results in a seesaw type matrix and the mixing angles feature a Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) effect as a consequence of the unparticle field being noncanonical. We find two (MSW) resonances for small and large spacelike momenta. The unparticlelike mode features a nearly flat potential with spinodal instabilities and a large expectation value. An effective potential for the unparticlelike field is generated from the Higgs potential, but with couplings suppressed by a large power of the small seesaw ratio. The dispersion relation for the Higgs-like mode features an imaginary part even at "tree level" as a consequence of the fact that the unparticle field describes a multiparticle continuum. Mixed unparticle-Higgs propagators reveal the possibility of oscillations, albeit with short coherence lengths. The results are generalized to the case in which the unparticle features a mass gap, in which case a low energy MSW resonance may occur for lightlike momenta depending on the scales. Unparticle-Higgs mixing leads to an effective unparticle potential of the new-inflation form. Slow-roll variables are suppressed by seesaw ratios and the anomalous dimensions and favor a red spectrum of scalar perturbations consistent with cosmic microwave background data.

Real time response on dS_3: the Topological AdS Black Hole and the Bubble

We study real time correlators in strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on dS_3 x S^1, with antiperiodic boundary conditions for fermions on the circle. When the circle radius is larger than a critical value, the dual geometry is the so-called "topological AdS_5 black hole". Applying the Son- Starinets recipe in this background we compute retarded glueball propagators which exhibit an infinite set of poles yielding the quasinormal frequencies of the topological black hole. The imaginary parts of the propagators exhibit thermal effects associated with the Gibbons-Hawking temperature due to the cosmological horizon of the de Sitter boundary. We also obtain R-current correlators and find that after accounting for a small subtlety, the Son-Starinets prescription yields the retarded Green's functions. The correlators do not display diffusive behaviour at late times. Below the critical value of the circle radius, the topological black hole decays to the AdS_5 "bubble of nothing". Using a high frequency WKB approximation, we show that glueball correlators in this phase exhibit poles on the real axis. The tunnelling from the black hole to the bubble is interpreted as a hadronization transition.

A Thermodynamic Interpretation of Time for Superstring Rolling Tachyons

Rolling tachyon backgrounds, arising from open strings on unstable branes in bosonic string theory, can be related to a simple statistical mechanical model - Coulomb gas of point charges in two dimensions confined to a circle, the Dyson gas. In this letter we describe a statistical system that is dual to non-BPS branes in superstring theory. We argue that even though the concept of time is absent in the statistical dual sitting at equilibrium, the notion of time can emerge at the large number of particles $N \to \infty$ limit.

Systematics of Moduli Stabilization, Inflationary Dynamics and Power Spectrum

We study the scalar sector of type IIB superstring theory compactified on Calabi-Yau orientifolds as a place to find a mechanism of inflation in the early universe. In the large volume limit, one can stabilize the moduli in stages using perturbative method. We relate the systematics of moduli stabilization with methods to reduce the number of possible inflatons, which in turn lead to a simpler inflation analysis. Calculating the order-of-magnitude of terms in the equation of motion, we show that the methods are in fact valid. We then give the examples where these methods are used in the literature. We also show that there are effects of non-inflaton scalar fields on the scalar power spectrum. For one of the two methods, these effects can be observed with the current precision in experiments, while for the other method, the effects might never be observable.

Axionic Inflation from Large Volume Flux Compactifications

We find a general model of {\em single-field} inflation within the context of type IIB string theory compactified on large volume Calabi-Yau orientifolds with $h^{2,1} > h^{1,1} = 2$. The inflaton is the axion part of the complexified Kähler moduli and the resulting scalar power spectrum is red, and can easily be made compatible with WMAP3 bounds on $n_s$. This model overcomes the $η$-problem using gaugino condensates on wrapped D7-brane while keeping the tuning of the parameters minimal.
