A note on Yamabe constants of products with hyperbolic spaces

We study the H^n-Yamabe constants of Riemannian products (H^n \times M^m, g_h^n +g), where (M,g) is a compact Riemannian manifold of constant scalar curvature and g_h^n is the hyperbolic metric on H^n. Numerical calculations can be carried out due to the uniqueness of (positive, finite energy) solutions of the equation Δu -λu + u^q =0 on hyperbolic space H^n under appropriate bounds on the parameters λ, q, as shown by G. Mancini and K. Sandeep. We do explicit numerical estimates in the cases (n,m)=(2,2),(2,3) and (3,2).

On the Yamabe constants of $S^2 \times \re^3$ and $S^3 \times \re^2$

We compare the isoperimetric profiles of $S^2 \times \re^3$ and of $S^3 \times \re^2$ with that of a round 5-sphere (of appropriate radius). Then we use this comparison to obtain lower bounds for the Yamabe constants of $S^2 \times \re^3$ and $S^3 \times \re^2$. Explicitly we show that $Y(S^3 \times \re^2, [g_0^3 +dx^2]) > (3 /4) Y(S^5)$ and $Y(S^2 \times \re^3, [g_0^2 +dx^2]) > 0.63 Y(S^5)$. We also obtain explicit lower bounds in higher dimensions and for products of Euclidean space with a closed manifold of positive Ricci curvature. The techniques are a more general version of those used by the same authors in previous work and the results are a complement to the work developed by B. Ammann, M. Dahl and E. Humbert to obtain explicit gap theorems for the Yamabe invariants in low dimensions.

Isoperimetric profile comparisons and Yamabe constants

We estimate from below the isoperimetric profile of $S^2 \times \re^2$ and use this information to obtain lower bounds for the Yamabe constant of $S^2 \times \re^2$. This provides a lower bound for the Yamabe invariants of products $S^2 \times M^2$ for any closed Riemann surface $M$. Explicitly we show that $Y(S^2 \times M^2) > (2/3) Y(S^4)$.

Metrics of constant scalar curvatures conformal to a Riemannian product with a round sphere

We consider the conformal class of the Riemannian product $g_0 + g$, where $g_0$ is the constant curvature metric on $S^m$ and $g$ is a metric of constant scalar curvature on some closed manifold. We show that the number of metrics of constant scalar curvature in the conformal class grows at least linearly with respect to the square root of the scalar curvature of $g$. This is obtained by studying radial solutions of the equation $Δu -λu + λu^p =0$ on $S^m$, and the number of solutions in terms of $λ$.

Isoperimetric regions in spherical cones and Yamabe constants of $M\times S^1$

Given closed Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature $Ricci(g) \geq (n-1)g$ we study isoperimetric regions on the spherical cone over $M$. When $g$ is Einstein we use this to compute the Yamabe constant of $(M \times {\bf R}, g + dt^2)$ and so to obtain lower bounds for the Yamabe invariant of $M\times S^1$.

On Yamabe constants of Riemannian products

For a closed Riemannian manifold $(M^m,g)$ of constant positive scalar curvature and any other closed Riemannian manifold $(N^n,h)$, we show that the limit of the Yamabe constants of the Riemannian products $(M\times N,g+rh)$ as $r$ goes to infinity is equal to the Yamabe constant of $(M^m \times R^n, [g+g_E])$ and is strictly less than the Yamabe invariant of $S^{m+n}$ provided $n\geq 2$. We then consider the minimum of the Yamabe functional restricted to functions of the second variable and we compute the limit in terms of the best constants of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities.

Ricci curvature and Yamabe constants

We prove that if a closed unit volume Riemannian manifold, $(M^n, g)$, has Ricci curvature bounded from below by r>0 then the Yamabe constant of the conformal class of $g$ is at least $n.r$. This inequality has already been proved by S. Ilias (Constantes explicites pour les inegalites de Sobolev sur les varietes riemannienes compactes, Ann. Inst. Fourier 33, 151-165). The equality is achieved if the metric is Einstein (with Ricci curvature r). This implies for instance that if $h$ is the Fubini-Study metric on $CP^2$ and $g$ is any other metric on $CP^2$ with $Ricci(g) \geq Ricci(h)$ then $Vol(CP^2, g) \leq Vol(CP^2, h)$.

Collapsing manifolds obtained by Kummer-type constructions

We construct F-structures on a Bott manifold and on some other manifolds obtained by Kummer-type constructions. We also prove that if M=E#X, where E is a fiber bundle with structure group G and a fiber admitting a G-invariant metric of non-negative sectional curvature and X admits an F-structure with one trivial covering, then one can construct on M a sequence of metrics with sectional curvature uniformly bounded from below and volume tending to zero (i.e. $Vol_K$ (M)=0). As a corollary we prove that all the elements in the Spin cobordism group can be represented by manifolds M with $Vol_K$ (M)==0.

Zero entropy and bounded topology

We study the existence of Riemannian metrics with zero topological entropy on a closed manifold M with infinite fundamental group. We show that such a metric does not exist if there is a finite simply connected CW complex which maps to M in such a way that the rank of the map induced in the pointed loop space homology grows exponentially. This result allows us to prove in dimensions four and five, that if M admits a metric with zero entropy then its universal covering has the rational homotopy type of a finite elliptic CW complex. We conjecture that this is the case in every dimension.

Entropy and collapsing of compact complex surfaces

We study the problem of existence of F-structures on compact complex surfaces, giving a complete classification modulo the gap in the classification of surfaces of class VII. We then use these results to study the minimal entropy problem for compact complex surfaces. For instance we prove that compact Kahler surfaces of Kodaira number different from 2 have minimal entropy 0, and such a surface admits a metric with entropy 0 if and only if it is the complex projective space, a ruled surface of genus 0 or 1, a complex torus or a hyperelliptic surface. The key result we use to prove this, is a new topological obstruction to the existence of metrics with vanishing topological entropy. Finally we show that these results fit perfectly into Wall's study of geometric structures on compact complex surfaces.

Minimal entropy and collapsing with curvature bounded from below

We show that if a closed manifold M admits an F-structure (possibly of rank 0) then its minimal entropy vanishes. In particular, this is the case if M admits a non-trivial circle action. As a corollary we obtain that the simplicial volume of a colsed manifold admitting an F-structure is zero. We also show that if M admits an F-structure then it collapses with curvature bounded from below. This is turn implies that M collapses with bounded scalar curvature or, equivalently, its Yamabe invariant is non-negative. We show that F-structures of rank zero appear rather frequently:every compact complex elliptic surface admits one as well as any simply connected 5-manifold. We use these results to study the minimal entropy problem. We show the following two theorems: suppose M is obtained by taking connected sums of copies of CP^2 (with any orintation), S^2 \times S^2 and the K3 surface. Then M has zero minimal entropy. Moreover, M admits a metric with zero topological entropy if and only if M is diffeomorphic to S^4, CP^2, S^2 \times S^2, CP^2#CP^2 or CP^2#(-CP^2). Finally, suppose that M is a closed simply connected 5-manifold. Than M has zero minimal entropy. Moreover, M admits a metric with zero topological entropy if and only if M is diffeomorphic to S^5, S^3 \times S^2, the non-trivial S^3-bundle over S^2 or the Wu manifold SU(3)/SO(3).

Einstein manifolds of non-negative sectional curvature and entropy

We find obstructions to the existence of Einstein metrics of non-negative sectional curvature on a smooth closed simply connected manifold of any dimension. The results are achieved by combining the classical Morse theory of the loop space with a new upper bound for the topological entropy of the geodesic flow in terms of the curvature tensor.

The Yamabe invariant of simply connected manifolds

We prove that the Yamabe invariant of any simply connected smooth manifold of dimension n greater than four is non-negative. Equivalently that the infimum of the L^{n/2} norm of the scalar curvature, over the space of all Riemannian metrics on the manifold, is zero.

Surgery and the Yamabe invariant

We study the Yamabe invariant of manifolds obtained as connected sums along submanifolds of codimension greater than 2. In particular, given a compact smooth manifold M which does not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant of M is an upper bound for the Yamabe invariant of any manifold obtained by performing surgery in M on spheres of codimension greater than 2 .

Computations of the Yamabe invariant

For a compact connected manifold M of dimension n greater than 3 and with no metric of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant is unchanged under surgery on spheres of dimension different from 1, n-2 and n-1. We use this result to give new computations of the invariant in dimension four and display new examples of 4-manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics.
