Source-free unsupervised domain adaptation for cross-modality abdominal multi-organ segmentation

Domain adaptation is crucial for transferring the knowledge from the source labeled CT dataset to the target unlabeled MR dataset in abdominal multi-organ segmentation. Meanwhile, it is highly desirable to avoid the high annotation cost related to the target dataset and protect the source dataset privacy. Therefore, we propose an effective source-free unsupervised domain adaptation method for cross-modality abdominal multi-organ segmentation without source dataset access. The proposed framework comprises two stages. In the first stage, the feature map statistics-guided model adaptation combined with entropy minimization is developed to help the top segmentation network reliably segment the target images. The pseudo-labels output from the top segmentation network are used to guide the style compensation network to generate source-like images. The pseudo-labels output from the middle segmentation network is used to supervise the learning progress of the desired model (bottom segmentation network). In the second stage, the circular learning and pixel-adaptive mask refinement are used to further improve the desired model performance. With this approach, we achieved satisfactory abdominal multi-organ segmentation performance, outperforming the existing state-of-the-art domain adaptation methods. The proposed approach can be easily extended to situations in which target annotation data exist. With only one labeled MR volume, the performance can be levelled with that of supervised learning. Furthermore, the proposed approach is proven to be effective for source-free unsupervised domain adaptation in reverse direction.

Unsupervised domain adaptation for cross-modality liver segmentation via joint adversarial learning and self-learning

Liver segmentation on images acquired using computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) plays an important role in clinical management of liver diseases. Compared to MRI, CT images of liver are more abundant and readily available. However, MRI can provide richer quantitative information of the liver compared to CT. Thus, it is desirable to achieve unsupervised domain adaptation for transferring the learned knowledge from the source domain containing labeled CT images to the target domain containing unlabeled MR images. In this work, we report a novel unsupervised domain adaptation framework for cross-modality liver segmentation via joint adversarial learning and self-learning. We propose joint semantic-aware and shape-entropy-aware adversarial learning with post-situ identification manner to implicitly align the distribution of task-related features extracted from the target domain with those from the source domain. In proposed framework, a network is trained with the above two adversarial losses in an unsupervised manner, and then a mean completer of pseudo-label generation is employed to produce pseudo-labels to train the next network (desired model). Additionally, semantic-aware adversarial learning and two self-learning methods, including pixel-adaptive mask refinement and student-to-partner learning, are proposed to train the desired model. To improve the robustness of the desired model, a low-signal augmentation function is proposed to transform MRI images as the input of the desired model to handle hard samples. Using the public data sets, our experiments demonstrated the proposed unsupervised domain adaptation framework reached four supervised learning methods with a Dice score 0.912 plus or minus 0.037 (mean plus or minus standard deviation).

Stimulated emission at 1.54 $μ$m from Erbium/Oxygen-doped silicon-based light emitting diodes

Silicon-based light sources including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) for information transmission are urgently needed for developing monolithic integrated silicon photonics. Silicon doped by ion implantation with erbium ions (Er$^{3+}$) is considered a promising approach, but suffers from an extremely low quantum efficiency. Here we report an electrically pumped superlinear emission at 1.54 $μ$m from Er/O-doped silicon planar LEDs, which are produced by applying a new deep cooling process. Stimulated emission at room temperature is realized with a low threshold current of ~6 mA (~0.8 A/cm2). Time-resolved photoluminescence and photocurrent results disclose the complex carrier transfer dynamics from the silicon to Er3+ by relaxing electrons from the indirect conduction band of the silicon. This picture differs from the frequently-assumed energy transfer by electron-hole pair recombination of the silicon host. Moreover, the amplified emission from the LEDs is likely due to a quasi-continuous Er/O-related donor band created by the deep cooling technique. This work paves a way for fabricating superluminescent diodes or efficient LDs at communication wavelengths based on rare-earth doped silicon.

Efficient Er/O Doped Silicon Light-Emitting Diodes at Communication Wavelength by Deep Cooling

A silicon light source at communication wavelength is the bottleneck for developing monolithically integrated silicon photonics. Doping silicon with erbium ions was believed to be one of the most promising approaches but suffers from the aggregation of erbium ions that are efficient non-radiative centers, formed during the standard rapid thermal treatment. Here, we apply a deep cooling process following the high-temperature annealing to suppress the aggregation of erbium ions by flushing with Helium gas cooled in liquid nitrogen. The resultant light emitting efficiency is increased to a record 14% at room temperature, two orders of magnitude higher than the sample treated by the standard rapid thermal annealing. The deep-cooling-processed Si samples were further made into light-emitting diodes. Bright electroluminescence with a spectral peak at 1.54 um from the silicon-based diodes was also observed at room temperature. With these results, it is promising to develop efficient silicon lasers at communication wavelength for the monolithically integrated silicon photonics.

Rigged Configuration Descriptions of the Crystals B(infinity) and B(lambda) for Special Linear Lie Algebras

The rigged configuration realization $RC(\infty)$ of the crystal $B(\infty)$ was originally presented as a certain connected component within a larger crystal. In this work, we make the realization more concrete by identifying the elements of $RC(\infty)$ explicitly for the $A_n$-type case. Two separate descriptions of $RC(\infty)$ are obtained. These lead naturally to isomorphisms $RC(\infty)\cong T(\infty)$ and $RC(\infty)\cong \bar{T}(\infty)$, i.e., those with the marginally large tableau and marginally large reverse tableau realizations of $B(\infty)$, that may be computed explicitly. We also present two descriptions of the irreducible highest weight crystal $B(λ)$ in terms of rigged configurations. These are obtained by combining our two descriptions of $RC(\infty)$, the two mentioned isomorphisms, and two existing realizations of $B(λ)$ that were based on $T(\infty)$ and $\bar{T}(\infty)$.

Young tableaux and crystal $B(\infty)$ for finite simple Lie algebras

We study the crystal base of the negative part of a quantum group. An explicit realization of the crystal is given in terms of Young tableaux for types $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, $D_n$, and $G_2$. Connection between our realization and a previous realization of Cliff is also given.

Young wall realization of crystal graphs for U_q(C_n^{(1)})

We give a realization of crystal graphs for basic representations of the quantum affine algebra U_q(C_n^{(1)}) using combinatorics of Young walls. The notion of splitting blocks plays a crucial role in the construction of crystal graphs.

A construction of level 1 irreducible modules for $U_q(\hat{sp}_4)$ using level 2 intertwiners for $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$

We bosonize certain components of level $\ell$ $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$-intertwiners of $(\ell + 1)$-dimensions. For $\ell = 2$, these intertwiners, after certain modification by bosonic vertex operators, are added to the algebra $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ at level 2 to construct all irreducible highest weight representations of level 1 for the quantum affine algebra $U_q(\hat{sp}_4)$.

Vertex Models with Alternating Spins

The diagonalisation of the transfer matrices of solvable vertex models with alternating spins is given. The crystal structure of (semi-)infinite tensor products of finite-dimensional $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ crystals with alternating dimensions is determined. Upon this basis the vertex models are formulated and then solved by means of $U_q(\hat{sl}_2)$ intertwiners.

Mixing of Ground States in Vertex Models

We consider the analogue of the 6-vertex model constructed from alternating spin n/2 and spin m/2 lines, where $1\leq n<m$. We identify the transfer matrix and the space on which it acts in terms of the representation theory of $U_q(sl_2)$. We diagonalise the transfer matrix and compute the S-matrix. We give a trace formula for local correlation functions. When n=1, the 1-point function of a spin m/2 local variable for the alternating lattice with a particular ground state is given as a linear combination of the 1-point functions of the pure spin m/2 model with different ground states. The mixing ratios are calculated exactly and are expressed in terms of irreducible characters of $U_q(sl_2)$ and the deformed Virasoro algebra.
