Propagation of spin channel waves

A mutilated model is constructed to approximate the collision term of spin Boltzmann equation that incorporates newly appearing collisional invariants i.e, the total angular momentum. With recourse to degenerate perturbation theory, the dispersion relations of hydrodynamic modes are formulated, among which spin modes are responsible for spin equilibration. We find that the non-locality does not change the sound speed but slows down the propagation of spin channel waves. The damping rates of spin modes are close to those of spinless modes over a reasonable parameter value range. The results reveal that both spin and momentum should be treated simultaneously in a unified transport framework. In the nonrelativistic limit, the short-wavelength behavior for normal modes is also explored and there exists a critical point for every distinct discrete mode over which only quasiparticle modes contribute.

Stronger quantum fluctuation with larger spins: Emergent magnetism in the pressurized high-temperature superconductor FeSe

A counter-intuitive enhancement of quantum fluctuation with larger spins, together with a few novel physical phenomena, is discovered in studying the recently observed emergent magnetism in high-temperature superconductor FeSe under pressure. Starting with experimental crystalline structure from our high-pressure X-ray refinement, we analyze theoretically the stability of the magnetically ordered state with a realistic spin-fermion model. We find surprisingly that in comparison with the magnetically ordered Fe-pnictides, the larger spins in FeSe suffer even stronger long-range quantum fluctuation that diminishes their ordering at ambient pressure. This "fail-to-order" quantum spin liquid state then develops into an ordered state above 1GPa due to weakened fluctuation accompanying the reduction of anion height and carrier density. The ordering further benefits from the ferro-orbital order and shows the observed enhancement around 1GPa. We further clarify the controversial nature of magnetism and its interplay with nematicity in FeSe in the same unified picture for all Fe-based superconductors. In addition, the versatile itinerant carriers produce interesting correlated metal behavior in a large region of phase space. Our study establishes a generic exceptional paradigm of stronger quantum fluctuation with larger spins that complements the standard knowledge of insulating magnetism.

Linear mode analysis from spin transport equation

We provide a linear analysis on normal modes of the spin Boltzmann equation proposed in \cite{Weickgenannt:2021cuo}, where the non-diagonal or polarized part of the transition rate is neglected to ensure the Hermitian property of linearized collision operator. As an instrumental element of spin kinetic theory, the conservation of total angular momentum is explicitly considered, thus our analysis is relevant to the recent investigation on the issue of local spin polarization. By treating the linearized collision operator as an evolution operator, solving the normal modes turns out a degenerate perturbation problem in quantum mechanics. The dispersion relations of spinless modes are in accordance with well-known calculations, while the frequencies of spin modes are also determined up to second-order in wave vector and the second order expressions are only formal solutions to be further determined. Moreover, the relaxation of spin density is related to our linear mode analysis, which shall play a big role in investigating the issues of the local spin polarization in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Evaluating the Practicality of Learned Image Compression

Learned image compression has achieved extraordinary rate-distortion performance in PSNR and MS-SSIM compared to traditional methods. However, it suffers from intensive computation, which is intolerable for real-world applications and leads to its limited industrial application for now. In this paper, we introduce neural architecture search (NAS) to designing more efficient networks with lower latency, and leverage quantization to accelerate the inference process. Meanwhile, efforts in engineering like multi-threading and SIMD have been made to improve efficiency. Optimized using a hybrid loss of PSNR and MS-SSIM for better visual quality, we obtain much higher MS-SSIM than JPEG, JPEG XL and AVIF over all bit rates, and PSNR between that of JPEG XL and AVIF. Our software implementation of LIC achieves comparable or even faster inference speed compared to jpeg-turbo while being multiple times faster than JPEG XL and AVIF. Besides, our implementation of LIC reaches stunning throughput of 145 fps for encoding and 208 fps for decoding on a Tesla T4 GPU for 1080p images. On CPU, the latency of our implementation is comparable with JPEG XL.

Multicomponent second-order dissipative relativistic hydrodynamics with binary reactive collisions

We derive the multi-component second-order dissipative relativistic hydrodynamic equations using the moment-expansion method. By computing the transport coefficients using hard-sphere interactions, we investigate the role of multiple components and the reactive collisions. We find that both of these factors increase the effective cross-section and hence decrease the transport coefficients and relaxation times. We further compute such transport properties using leading-order perturbative QCD cross-sections. For both types of cross-sections, we find that the ratio between vector current relaxation time and conductivity for a multi-component fluid is notably different from that for a single-component fluid. Therefore, the current study provides a more applicable guideline for such a ratio in phenomenological hydrodynamics simulations.

The linear mode analysis and spin relaxation

In this paper, a detailed analysis on normal modes of the linearized Hermite collision operator is presented, which follows from linearizing spin Boltzmann equation for massive fermions proposed in \cite{Weickgenannt:2021cuo} with the non-diagonal part of the transition rate neglected and approximating what we got with a mutilated operator. With the assumption of total angular momentum conservation, the collision term is proved to well describe the equilibrium state and gives proper interpretation for collisional invariants, thus is relevant for the research on local spin polarization. Following the familiar fashion as used in quantum mechanics, we treat the problem of solving normal modes as a degenerate perturbation problem and calculate the dispersion relations for intriguing eleven zero modes, which form one-to-one correspondence to all collisional invariants. We find that the results of spinless modes appearing in ordinary hydrodynamics are consistent with available conclusions in textbooks. As for spin-related modes, we obtain the frequencies up to second order in wave vector and relate them with the dissipation of spin density fluctuation. In addition, the ratio of two relaxation time scales for spin and momentum is shown as a function of reduced mass, which reads that based on present framework spin equilibration is almost as slow as momentum equilibration as far as the strange quark spins in quark gluon plasma (QGP) are concerned.

Controlling magnetic exchange and anisotropy by non-magnetic ligand substitution in layered MPX3 (M = Ni, Mn; X = S, Se)

Recent discoveries in two-dimensional (2D) magnetism have intensified the investigation of van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials and further improved our ability to tune their magnetic properties. Tunable magnetism has been widely studied in antiferromagnetic metal thiophosphates MPX3. Substitution of metal ions M has been adopted as an important technique to engineer the magnetism in MPX3. In this work, we have studied the previously unexplored chalcogen X substitutions in MPX3 (M = Mn/Ni; X = S/Se). We synthesized the single crystals of MnPS3-xSex (0 < x < 3) and NiPS3-xSex (0 < x < 1.3) and investigated the systematic evolution of the magnetism with varying x. Our study reveals the effective tuning of magnetic interactions and anisotropies in both MnPS3 and NiPS3 upon Se substitution. Such efficient engineering of the magnetism provides a suitable platform to understand the low-dimensional magnetism and develop future magnetic devices.

The revealed evolutions of these properties with tuning the compositions would provide useful insights for the fundamental topological physics and the future applications.

A High-Order-Accurate 3D Surface Integral Equation Solver for Uniaxial Anisotropic Media

This paper introduces a high-order accurate surface integral equation method for solving 3D electromagnetic scattering for dielectric objects with uniaxially anisotropic permittivity tensors. The N-Müller formulation is leveraged resulting in a second-kind integral formulation, and a finite-difference-based approach is used to deal with the strongly singular terms resulting from the dyadic Green's functions for uniaxially anisotropic media while maintaining the high-order accuracy of the discretization strategy. The integral operators are discretized via a Nyström-collocation approach, which represents the unknown surface densities in terms of Chebyshev polynomials on curvilinear quadrilateral surface patches. The convergence is investigated for various geometries, including a sphere, cube, a complicated NURBS geometry imported from a 3D CAD modeler software, and a nanophotonic silicon waveguide, and results are compared against a commercial finite element solver. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of high-order accuracy for objects with uniaxially anisotropic materials using surface integral equations.

Thermal Hysteresis Behavior of Skyrmion Lattices in the van der Waals Ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2

Understanding the physics of phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) systems underpins the research in diverse fields including statistical mechanics, quantum systems, nanomagnetism, and soft condensed matter. However, many fundamental aspects of 2D phase transitions are still not well understood, including the effects of interparticle potential, polydispersity, and particle shape. Magnetic skyrmions, which are non-trivial chiral spin structures, can be considered as quasi-particles that form two-dimensional lattices. Here we show, by real-space imaging using in situ cryo-Lorentz transmission electron microscopy coupled with machine learning, the ordering behavior of Néel skyrmion lattices in van der Waals Fe3GeTe2. We demonstrate a distinct change in the skyrmion size distribution during field-cooling, which leads to a loss of lattice order and an evolution of the skyrmion liquid phase. Remarkably, the lattice order is restored during field heating and demonstrates a thermal hysteresis. Our quantitative analysis explains this behavior based on the energy landscape of skyrmions and demonstrates the potential to control the lattice order in 2D phase transitions.

Relativistic first-order spin hydrodynamics via the Chapman-Enskog expansion

In this paper, we present a detailed derivation of relativistic first-order spin hydrodynamics using the Chapman-Enskog method to linearize the nonlocal collision term for massive fermions proposed in \cite{Weickgenannt:2021cuo}, which well describes spin-orbit coupling in the collision process and is relevant for the research on local spin polarization. Based on this collisional term, we provide a formal discussion about first-order spin hydrodynamics and determine the motion equations of fluid variables and nonequilibrium corrections to the energy-momentum and spin tensors. The results indicate that the motion equations show no differences compared to spinless first-order hydrodynamics and the energy-momentum tensor receives no corrections from spin as far as first-order theory is concerned, which calls for the construction of second-order theory of fluids naturally incorporating the effect of spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetic field induced hair structure in charmonium gluon-dissociation

We study electromagnetic field effect on charmonium gluon-dissociation in quark-gluon plasma. With the effective Hamiltonian derived from QCD multipole expansion under an external electromagnetic field, we first solve the two-body Schrödinger equation for a pair of charm quarks with mean field potentials for color and electromagnetic interactions and obtain the charmonium binding energies and wave functions, and then calculate the gluon-dissociation cross-section and decay width by taking the color electric and magnetic dipole interactions as perturbations above the mean field and employing Fermi's Golden Rule. Considering the charmonium deformation in magnetic field, the discrete Landau energy levels make the dissociation cross-section grow hair, and the electric dipole channel is significantly changed, especially for the $P-$wave states $χ_{c0}$ and $χ_{c\pm}$. From our numerical calculation, the magnetic field strength $eB=5~m_π^2$ already changes the gluon dissociation strongly, which may indicate measurable effects in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Field-Dependent Magnetic Domain Behavior in van der Waals Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$

Two-dimensional magnetic van der Waals (vdW) materials can show a variety of topological nontrivial spin textures, such as Bloch- or Néel-type stripe, skyrmion or bubble domains under certain external stimuli. It is critical to understand the magnetic domain behavior in vdW materials in order to control their size, and density in response to external stimuli such as electric and magnetic fields. Here we examine the magnetic field dependence of topologically non-trivial magnetization spin textures in vdW Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. Néel-type stripe domains and skyrmions are formed depending on the magnetic field-cooling protocol used during in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) experiments. Use of quantitative reconstruction of magnetic induction maps, and micromagnetic simulations, allow for understanding the LTEM results of Néel-type stripe domains as well as skyrmions. In addition, the deformation of skyrmion contrast is observed as a result of the introduction of an in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate the stability of the stripe domains and skyrmions in response to externally applied magnetic field due to energy barrier for domain wall annihilation. Our results establish an understanding of the energy landscape that governs the behavior of the topologically non-trivial spin textures in vdW materials which can be harnessed for spintronic applications.

Giant topological Hall effect in centrosymmetric tetragonal Mn2-xZnxSb

Topological magnetism typically appears in noncentrosymmetric compounds or compounds with geometric frustration. Here we report the effective tuning of magnetism in centrosymmetric tetragonal Mn2-xZnxSb by Zn substitution. The magnetism is found to be closely coupled to the transport properties, giving rise to to a very large topological hall effect is possibly associated with topological magnetism. Our finding suggests Mn2-xZnxSb is a candidate material for the centrosymmetric tetragonal topological magnetic system, offers opportunities for studying and tuning spin textures and developing near room temperature spin-based devices.

Relativistic kinetic equation for dense gases from quantum field theory

We derive the relativistic kinetic equation and collision kernel for dense gases of spin $0$ particles from quantum field theory based on the Wigner-function formalism. The formalism developed by Degroot can be used as an effective way for density expansion of the kinetic equation. The kinetic equation obtained in the lowest order in density recovers the Boltzmann equation with a nonlocal binary collision term. Keeping this expansion procedure, we derive the triple collision term, which can be seen as a relativistic extension of correspondent works on the transport research about dense gases in the non-relativistic cases. Considering the widespread practicability in different physical systems, the kinetic equation for dense gases we obtain shall be put into good use.

Magnetic Topological Semimetal Phase with Electronic Correlation Enhancement in SmSbTe

The ZrSiS family of compounds hosts various exotic quantum phenomena due to the presence of both topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. In this material family, the LnSbTe (Ln= lanthanide) compounds are particularly interesting owing to the intrinsic magnetism from magnetic Ln which leads to new properties and quantum states. In this work, the authors focus on the previously unexplored compound SmSbTe. The studies reveal a rare combination of a few functional properties in this material, including antiferromagnetism with possible magnetic frustration, electron correlation enhancement, and Dirac nodal-line fermions. These properties enable SmSbTe as a unique platform to explore exotic quantum phenomena and advanced functionalities arising from the interplay between magnetism, topology, and electronic correlations.

Anisotropic Berry phase in the Dirac nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS: The effect of spin-orbit coupling

The topological nodal-line semimetals (NLSMs) possess a loop of Dirac nodes in the k space with linear dispersion, different from the point nodes in Dirac/Weyl semimetals. While the quantum transport associated with the topologically nontrivial Dirac fermions has been investigated extensively, features uniquely associated with the extended nodal lines remain to be demonstrated. Here, we investigate the quantum oscillations (QOs) in the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS, with the electron transport along the c axis, and magnetic field rotating in the ab plane. The extremal orbits identified through the field orientation dependence of the QOs interlock with the nodal line, leading to a nonzero Berry phase. Most importantly, the Berry phase shows a significant dependence on the magnetic field orientation, which we argue to be due to the finite spin-orbit coupling gap. Our results demonstrate the importance of the spin-orbit coupling and the nodal-line dispersion in understanding the quantum transport of NLSMs.

Kubo formulae for first-order spin hydrodynamics

We derive Kubo formulae for first-order spin hydrodynamics based on non-equilibrium statistical operators method. In first-order spin hydrodynamics, there are two new transport coefficients besides the ordinary ones appearing in first-order viscous hydrodynamics. They emerge due to the incorporation of the spin degree of freedom into fluids and the spin-orbital coupling. Zubarev's non-equilibrium statistical operator method can be well applied to investigate these quantum effects in fluids. The Kubo formulae, based on the method of non-equilibrium statistical operators, are related to equilibrium (imaginary-time) infrared Green's functions, and all the transport coefficients can be determined when the microscopic theory is specified.
