The first result on 76Ge neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment

We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved. The possible methods to further decrease the background level have been discussed and will be pursued in the next stage of CDEX experiment.

Weakly- and Semi-Supervised Object Detection with Expectation-Maximization Algorithm

Object detection when provided image-level labels instead of instance-level labels (i.e., bounding boxes) during training is an important problem in computer vision, since large scale image datasets with instance-level labels are extremely costly to obtain. In this paper, we address this challenging problem by developing an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based object detection method using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our method is applicable to both the weakly-supervised and semi-supervised settings. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 benchmark show that (1) in the weakly supervised setting, our method provides significant detection performance improvement over current state-of-the-art methods, (2) having access to a small number of strongly (instance-level) annotated images, our method can almost match the performace of the fully supervised Fast RCNN. We share our source code at https://github.com/ZiangYan/EM-WSD.

Gravitational Quasinormal Modes of Regular Phantom Black Hole

We investigate the gravitational quasi-normal modes (QNMs) for a type of regular black hole (BH) known as phantom BH, which is a static self-gravitating solution of a minimally coupled phantom scalar field with a potential. The studies are carried out for three different spacetimes: asymptotically flat, de Sitter (dS), and anti de Sitter (AdS). In order to consider the standard odd parity and even parity of gravitational perturbations, the corresponding master equations are derived. The QNMs are discussed by evaluating the temporal evolution of the perturbation field which, in turn, provides direct information on the stability of BH spacetime. It is found that in asymptotically flat, dS and AdS spacetimes, the gravitational perturbations have similar characteristics for both odd and even parities. The decay rate of perturbation is strongly dependent on the scale parameter $b$, which measures the coupling strength between phantom scalar field and the gravity. Furthermore, through the analysis of Hawking radiation, it is shown that the thermodynamics of such regular phantom BH is also influenced by $b$. The obtained results might shed some light on the quantum interpretation of QNM perturbation.

Linear Codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]/(x^2)$ and $GR(p^2,m)$ Reaching the Griesmer Bound

We construct two series of linear codes over finite ring $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]/(x^2)$ and Galois ring $GR(p^2,m)$ respectively reaching the Griesmer bound. They derive two series of codes over finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ by Gray map. The first series of codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ derived from $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]/(x^2)$ are linear and also reach the Griesmer bound in some cases. Many of linear codes over finite field we constructed have two Hamming (non-zero) weights.

Counting unstable eigenvalues in Hamiltonian spectral problems via commuting operators

We present a general counting result for the unstable eigenvalues of linear operators of the form $JL$ in which $J$ and $L$ are skew- and self-adjoint operators, respectively. Assuming that there exists a self-adjoint operator $K$ such that the operators $JL$ and $JK$ commute, we prove that the number of unstable eigenvalues of $JL$ is bounded by the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of~$K$. As an application, we discuss the transverse stability of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves in the classical KP-II (Kadomtsev--Petviashvili) equation. We show that these one-dimensional periodic waves are transversely spectrally stable with respect to general two-dimensional bounded perturbations, including periodic and localized perturbations in either the longitudinal or the transverse direction, and that they are transversely linearly stable with respect to doubly periodic perturbations.

Construction of Cyclic and Constacyclic Codes for b-symbol Read Channels Meeting the Plotkin-like Bound

The symbol-pair codes over finite fields have been raised for symbol-pair read channels and motivated by application of high-density data storage technologies [1, 2]. Their generalization is the code for b-symbol read channels (b > 2). Many MDS codes for b-symbol read channels have been constructed which meet the Singleton-like bound ([3, 4, 10] for b = 2 and [11] for b > 2). In this paper we show the Plotkin-like bound and present a construction on irreducible cyclic codes and constacyclic codes meeting the Plotkin-like bound.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.

Resonance of Gaussian electromagnetic field to the high frequency gravitational waves

We consider a Gaussian Beam (GB) resonant system for high frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) detection. At present, we find the optimal signal strength in theory through setting the magnetic component of GB in a standard gaussian form. Under the synchro-resonance condition, we study the signal strength (i.e., transverse perturbative photon fluxes) from the relic HFGWs (predicted by ordinary inflationary model) and the braneworld HFGWs (from braneworld scenarios). Both of them would generate potentially detectable transverse perturbative photon fluxes (PPFs). Furthermore we find optimal system parameters and the relationship between frequency and effective width of energy fluxes accumulation.

Linear Codes over Galois Ring $GR(p^2,r)$ Related to Gauss sums

Linear codes over finite rings become one of hot topics in coding theory after Hommons et al.([4], 1994) discovered that several remarkable nonlinear binary codes with some linear-like properties are the images of Gray map of linear codes over $Z_4$. In this paper we consider two series of linear codes $C(G)$ and $\widetilde{C}(G)$ over Galois ring $R=GR(p^2,r)$, where $G$ is a subgroup of $R^{(s)^*}$ and $R^{(s)}=GR(p^2,rs)$. We present a general formula on $N_β(a)$ in terms of Gauss sums on $R^{(s)}$ for each $a\in R$, where $N_β(a)$ is the number of a-component of the codeword $c_β\in C(G) (β\in R^{(s)})$ (Theorem 3.1). We have determined the complete Hamming weight distribution of $C(G)$ and the minimum Hamming distance of $\widetilde{C}(G)$ for some special G (Theorem 3.3 and 3.4). We show a general formula on homogeneous weight of codewords in $C(G)$ and $\widetilde{C}(G)$ (Theorem 4.5) for the special $G$ given in Theorem 3.4. Finally we obtained series of nonlinear codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q} \ (q=p^r)$ with two Hamming distance by using Gray map (Corollary 4.6).

New Boys and Girls in Phosphorene Family from Gene Recombination: Different from Parents, Excellent than Parents

Based on the crystal structures of the previously proposed low energy phosphorene allotropes η-P and θ-P (Nano. Lett. 2015, 15, 3557), we propose five new structural stable phosphorene boys (XX-XY or XY-XY) and girls (XX-XX) through gene (XY from η-P and XX from θ-P) recombination methods. All of these five new phosphorene allotropes are obviously different from their parents, showing very different and fascinating two-dimensional patterns between each other. The dynamical stabilities of these phosphorene allotropes are confirmed positive and some of them are confirmed energetically more favorable than their parents (η-P and θ-P). Especially, the XX-XX type girl G1-P is confirmed energetically more favorable than all the previously proposed phosphorene allotropes, including black phosphorene (α-P, ACS Nano, 2014, 8, 4033) and blue phosphorene (β-P, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2014, 112, 176802), which is expected to be synthesized in future experiment through vapor deposition. Our results show that such a new promising phosphorene allotrope G1-P is an excellent candidate for potential applications in nano-electronics according to its middle band gap about 1.58 eV from DFT-HSE06 calculation.

Dark Matter Directionality Revisited with a High Pressure Xenon Gas Detector

An observation of the anisotropy of dark matter interactions in a direction-sensitive detector would provide decisive evidence for the discovery of galactic dark matter. Directional information would also provide a crucial input to understanding its distribution in the local Universe. Most of the existing directional dark matter detectors utilize particle tracking methods in a low-pressure gas time projection chamber. These low pressure detectors require excessively large volumes in order to be competitive in the search for physics beyond the current limit. In order to avoid these volume limitations, we consider a novel proposal, which exploits a columnar recombination effect in a high-pressure gas time projection chamber. The ratio of scintillation to ionization signals observed in the detector carries the angular information of the particle interactions. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of a future directional detector focused on the proposed high-pressure Xenon gas time projection chamber. We study the prospect of detecting an anisotropy in the dark matter velocity distribution. We find that tens of events are needed to exclude an isotropic distribution of dark matter interactions at 95% confidence level in the most optimistic case with head-to-tail information. However, one needs at least 10-20 times more events without head-to-tail information for light dark matter below 50 GeV. For an intermediate mass range, we find it challenging to observe an anisotropy of the dark matter distribution. Our results also show that the directional information significantly improves precision measurements of dark matter mass and the elastic scattering cross section for a heavy dark matter.

Two dimensional topological insulators with tunable band gaps: HgTe and HgSe monolayers

Employing ab initio electronic calculations, we propose a new type of two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI), monolayer (ML) low buckled (LB) mercury telluride (HgTe) and mercury selenide (HgSe), with tunable band gaps. Monolayer LB HgTe undergoes a transition to a topological nontrivial phase under the appropriate in-plane tensile strain (ε > 2.6%) due to the combination effects of strain and spin orbital coupling (SOC). Under the 2.6%< ε <4.2% tensile strain, the band inversion and topological nontrivial gap are induced by the SOC. For ε >4.2%, the band inversion is already realized by strain but the topological gap is induced by SOC. The band gap of monolayer LB HgTe TI phase can be tuned over a wide range from 0 eV to 0.20 eV as the tensile strain increases from 2.6% to 7.4%. Similarly, the topological phase transition of monolayer LB HgSe is induced by strain and SOC as the strain ε >3.1%. The topological band gap can be 0.05 eV as the strain increases to about 4.6%. The large band gap of 2D LB HgTe and HgSe monolayers make this type of material suitable for practical applications at room-temperature.

Orlicz valuations

In this paper, Orlicz valuations compatible with $SL(n)$ transforms are classified. Unlike their $L_p$ analogs, the identity operator and the reflection operator are the only $SL(n)$ compatible Orlicz valuations (up to dilations). It turns out that the Orlicz projection body operator, the Orlicz centroid body operator and the Orlicz difference body operator are not Orlicz valuations. The property that the Orlicz difference body operator is not an Orlicz valuation plays an important role in characterizing the identity operator and the reflection operator.

Some geometric interpretations of quantum fidelity

We consider quantum fidelity between two states $ρ$ and $σ$, where we fix $ρ$ and allow $σ$ to be sent through a quantum channel. We determine the minimal fidelity where one minimizes over (a) all unital channels, (b) all mixed unitary channels, and (c) arbitrary channels. We derive results involving the minimal eigenvalue of $ρ$, which we can interpret as a convex combination coefficient. As a consequence, we give a new geometric interpretation of the minimal fidelity with respect to the closed, convex set of density matrices and with respect to the closed, convex set of quantum channels. We further investigate the geometric nature of fidelity by considering density matrices arising as normalized projections onto subspaces; in this way, fidelity can be viewed as a geometric measure of distance between two spaces. We give a connection between fidelity and the canonical (principal) angles between the subspaces.

Directional dark matter by polar angle direct detection and application of columnar recombination

We report a systematic study on the directional sensitivity of a direct dark matter detector that detects the polar angle of a recoiling nucleus. A weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-mass independent method is used to obtain the sensitivity of a general detector in an isothermal galactic dark matter halo. By using two-dimensional distributions of energy and polar angle, a detector without head-tail information with 6.3 times the statistics is found to achieve the same performance level as a full three-dimensional tracking dark matter detector. Optimum operation orientations are obtained for various experimental configurations, with detectors that are space- or Earth-fixed, have head-tail capability or not, and use energy information or not. Earth-fixed detectors are found to have best sensitivity when the polar axis is oriented at a 45 degree angle from the Earth's pole. With background contamination that mimics the WIMP signal's energy distribution, the performance is found to decrease at a rate less than the decrease of signal purity. The WIMP-mass dependence of the performance of a detector with various energy thresholds that uses gaseous xenon as target material is reported. We find that with a $5\times 10^{-46} \mathrm{cm}^2$ spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-section and a 30 GeV WIMP, a $770$ kg$\cdot$year's exposure with a polar detector of 10 keV threshold can make a three sigma discovery of directional WIMPs in the isothermal galactic dark matter halo. For a columnar recombination detector, experimental considerations are discussed.

Direct and quasi-direct band gap silicon allotropes with remarkable stability

In our present work, five previously proposed sp$^3$ carbon crystals were suggested as silicon allotropes and their stabilities, electronic and optical properties were investigated by first-principles method. We find that these allotropes with direct or quasi-direct band gaps in range of 1.2-1.6 eV are very suitable for applications in thin-film solar cells. They display strong adsorption coefficients in the visible range of the sunlight in comparison with diamond silicon. These five silicon allotropes are confirmed possessing positive dynamical stability and remarkable themodynamical stability close to that of diamond silicon. Especially, the direct band gap M585-silicon possessing energy higher than diamond silicon only 25 meV per atom is expected to be experimentally produced for thin-film solar cells.

Compound Poisson Processes, Latent Shrinkage Priors and Bayesian Nonconvex Penalization

In this paper we discuss Bayesian nonconvex penalization for sparse learning problems. We explore a nonparametric formulation for latent shrinkage parameters using subordinators which are one-dimensional Lévy processes. We particularly study a family of continuous compound Poisson subordinators and a family of discrete compound Poisson subordinators. We exemplify four specific subordinators: Gamma, Poisson, negative binomial and squared Bessel subordinators. The Laplace exponents of the subordinators are Bernstein functions, so they can be used as sparsity-inducing nonconvex penalty functions. We exploit these subordinators in regression problems, yielding a hierarchical model with multiple regularization parameters. We devise ECME (Expectation/Conditional Maximization Either) algorithms to simultaneously estimate regression coefficients and regularization parameters. The empirical evaluation of simulated data shows that our approach is feasible and effective in high-dimensional data analysis.
