Dynamic resonance fluorescence in solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics

The coherent interaction between a two-level system and electromagnetic fields serves as a foundation for fundamental quantum physics and modern photonic quantum technology. A profound example is resonance fluorescence, where the non-classical photon emission appears in the form of a Mollow-triplet when a two-level system is continuously driven by a resonant laser. Pushing resonance fluorescence from a static to dynamic regime by using short optical pulses generates on-demand emissions of highly coherent single photons. Further increasing the driving strength in the dynamical regime enables the pursuit of exotic non-classical light emission in photon number superposition, photon number entanglement, and photon bundle states. However, the long-sought-after spectrum beyond the Mollow-triplet, a characteristic of dynamic resonance fluorescence under strong driving strength, has not been observed yet. Here we report the direct observation and systematic investigations of dynamic resonance fluorescence spectra beyond the Mollow-triplet in a solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamic system. The dynamic resonance fluorescence spectra with up to five pairs of side peaks, excitation detuning induced spectral asymmetry, and cavity filtering effect are observed and quantitatively modeled by a full quantum model with phonon scattering included. Time-resolved measurements further reveal that the multiple side peaks originate from interference of the emission associated with different temporal positions of the excitation pulses. Our work facilitates the generation of a variety of exotic quantum states of light with dynamic driving of two-level systems.

Adaptive Graph Convolutional Subspace Clustering

Spectral-type subspace clustering algorithms have shown excellent performance in many subspace clustering applications. The existing spectral-type subspace clustering algorithms either focus on designing constraints for the reconstruction coefficient matrix or feature extraction methods for finding latent features of original data samples. In this paper, inspired by graph convolutional networks, we use the graph convolution technique to develop a feature extraction method and a coefficient matrix constraint simultaneously. And the graph-convolutional operator is updated iteratively and adaptively in our proposed algorithm. Hence, we call the proposed method adaptive graph convolutional subspace clustering (AGCSC). We claim that by using AGCSC, the aggregated feature representation of original data samples is suitable for subspace clustering, and the coefficient matrix could reveal the subspace structure of the original data set more faithfully. Finally, plenty of subspace clustering experiments prove our conclusions and show that AGCSC outperforms some related methods as well as some deep models.

Symmetries of the D$Δ$mKP hierarchy and their continuum limits

In the recent paper [Stud. App. Math. 147 (2021) 752], squared eigenfunction symmetry constraint of the differential-difference modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (D$Δ$mKP) hierarchy converts the D$Δ$mKP system to the relativistic Toda spectral problem and its hierarchy. In this paper we introduce a new formulation of independent variables in the squared eigenfunction symmetry constraint, under which the D$Δ$mKP system gives rise to the discrete spectral problem and a hierarchy of the differential-difference derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation of the Chen-Lee-Liu type. In addition, by introducing nonisospectral flows, two sets of symmetries of the D$Δ$mKP hierarchy and their algebraic structure are obtained. We then present a unified continuum limit scheme, by which we achieve the correspondence of the mKP and the D$Δ$mKP hierarchies and their integrable structures.

Approximate Order-Preserving Pattern Mining for Time Series

The order-preserving pattern mining can be regarded as discovering frequent trends in time series, since the same order-preserving pattern has the same relative order which can represent a trend. However, in the case where data noise is present, the relative orders of many meaningful patterns are usually similar rather than the same. To mine similar relative orders in time series, this paper addresses an approximate order-preserving pattern (AOP) mining method based on (delta-gamma) distance to effectively measure the similarity, and proposes an algorithm called AOP-Miner to mine AOPs according to global and local approximation parameters. AOP-Miner adopts a pattern fusion strategy to generate candidate patterns generation and employs the screening strategy to calculate the supports of candidate patterns. Experimental results validate that AOP-Miner outperforms other competitive methods and can find more similar trends in time series.

On Newton Screening

Screening and working set techniques are important approaches to reducing the size of an optimization problem. They have been widely used in accelerating first-order methods for solving large-scale sparse learning problems. In this paper, we develop a new screening method called Newton screening (NS) which is a generalized Newton method with a built-in screening mechanism. We derive an equivalent KKT system for the Lasso and utilize a generalized Newton method to solve the KKT equations. Based on this KKT system, a built-in working set with a relatively small size is first determined using the sum of primal and dual variables generated from the previous iteration, then the primal variable is updated by solving a least-squares problem on the working set and the dual variable updated based on a closed-form expression. Moreover, we consider a sequential version of Newton screening (SNS) with a warm-start strategy. We show that NS possesses an optimal convergence property in the sense that it achieves one-step local convergence. Under certain regularity conditions on the feature matrix, we show that SNS hits a solution with the same signs as the underlying true target and achieves a sharp estimation error bound with high probability. Simulation studies and real data analysis support our theoretical results and demonstrate that SNS is faster and more accurate than several state-of-the-art methods in our comparative studies.

FONT: Flow-guided One-shot Talking Head Generation with Natural Head Motions

One-shot talking head generation has received growing attention in recent years, with various creative and practical applications. An ideal natural and vivid generated talking head video should contain natural head pose changes. However, it is challenging to map head pose sequences from driving audio since there exists a natural gap between audio-visual modalities. In this work, we propose a Flow-guided One-shot model that achieves NaTural head motions(FONT) over generated talking heads. Specifically, the head pose prediction module is designed to generate head pose sequences from the source face and driving audio. We add the random sampling operation and the structural similarity constraint to model the diversity in the one-to-many mapping between audio-visual modality, thus predicting natural head poses. Then we develop a keypoint predictor that produces unsupervised keypoints from the source face, driving audio and pose sequences to describe the facial structure information. Finally, a flow-guided occlusion-aware generator is employed to produce photo-realistic talking head videos from the estimated keypoints and source face. Extensive experimental results prove that FONT generates talking heads with natural head poses and synchronized mouth shapes, outperforming other compared methods.

Joint embedding in Hierarchical distance and semantic representation learning for link prediction

The link prediction task aims to predict missing entities or relations in the knowledge graph and is essential for the downstream application. Existing well-known models deal with this task by mainly focusing on representing knowledge graph triplets in the distance space or semantic space. However, they can not fully capture the information of head and tail entities, nor even make good use of hierarchical level information. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel knowledge graph embedding model for the link prediction task, namely, HIE, which models each triplet (\textit{h}, \textit{r}, \textit{t}) into distance measurement space and semantic measurement space, simultaneously. Moreover, HIE is introduced into hierarchical-aware space to leverage rich hierarchical information of entities and relations for better representation learning. Specifically, we apply distance transformation operation on the head entity in distance space to obtain the tail entity instead of translation-based or rotation-based approaches. Experimental results of HIE on four real-world datasets show that HIE outperforms several existing state-of-the-art knowledge graph embedding methods on the link prediction task and deals with complex relations accurately.

OPT: One-shot Pose-Controllable Talking Head Generation

One-shot talking head generation produces lip-sync talking heads based on arbitrary audio and one source face. To guarantee the naturalness and realness, recent methods propose to achieve free pose control instead of simply editing mouth areas. However, existing methods do not preserve accurate identity of source face when generating head motions. To solve the identity mismatch problem and achieve high-quality free pose control, we present One-shot Pose-controllable Talking head generation network (OPT). Specifically, the Audio Feature Disentanglement Module separates content features from audios, eliminating the influence of speaker-specific information contained in arbitrary driving audios. Later, the mouth expression feature is extracted from the content feature and source face, during which the landmark loss is designed to enhance the accuracy of facial structure and identity preserving quality. Finally, to achieve free pose control, controllable head pose features from reference videos are fed into the Video Generator along with the expression feature and source face to generate new talking heads. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experimental results verify that OPT generates high-quality pose-controllable talking heads with no identity mismatch problem, outperforming previous SOTA methods.

Two-directional simultaneous inference for high-dimensional models

This paper proposes a general two directional simultaneous inference (TOSI) framework for high-dimensional models with a manifest variable or latent variable structure, for example, high-dimensional mean models, high-dimensional sparse regression models, and high-dimensional latent factors models. TOSI performs simultaneous inference on a set of parameters from two directions, one to test whether the assumed zero parameters indeed are zeros and one to test whether exist zeros in the parameter set of nonzeros. As a result, we can exactly identify whether the parameters are zeros, thereby keeping the data structure fully and parsimoniously expressed. We theoretically prove that the proposed TOSI method asymptotically controls the Type I error at the prespecified significance level and that the testing power converges to one. Simulations are conducted to examine the performance of the proposed method in finite sample situations and two real datasets are analyzed. The results show that the TOSI method is more predictive and has more interpretable estimators than existing methods.

Bright Semiconductor Single-Photon Sources Pumped by Heterogeneously Integrated Micropillar lasers with Electrical Injections

The emerging hybrid integrated quantum photonics combines advantages of different functional components into a single chip to meet the stringent requirements for quantum information processing. Despite the tremendous progress in hybrid integrations of III-V quantum emitters with silicon-based photonic circuits and superconducting single-photon detectors, on-chip optical excitations of quantum emitters via miniaturized lasers towards single-photon sources (SPSs) with low power consumptions, small device footprints and excellent coherence properties is highly desirable yet illusive. In this work, we present realizations of bright semiconductor singe-photon sources heterogeneously integrated with on-chip electrically-injected microlasers. Different from previous one-by-one transfer printing technique implemented in hybrid quantum dot (QD) photonic devices, multiple deterministically coupled QD-circular Bragg Grating (CBG) SPSs were integrated with electrically-injected micropillar lasers at one time via a potentially scalable transfer printing process assisted by the wide-field photoluminescence (PL) imaging technique. Optically pumped by electrically-injected microlasers, pure single photons are generated with a high-brightness of a count rate of 3.8 M/s and an extraction efficiency of 25.44%. Such a high-brightness is due to the enhancement by the cavity mode of the CBG, which is confirmed by a Purcell factor of 2.5. Our work provides a powerful tool for advancing hybrid integrated quantum photonics in general and boosts the developments for realizing highly-compact, energy-efficient and coherent SPSs in particular.

Inference on High-dimensional Single-index Models with Streaming Data

Traditional statistical methods are faced with new challenges due to streaming data. The major challenge is the rapidly growing volume and velocity of data, which makes storing such huge datasets in memory impossible. The paper presents an online inference framework for regression parameters in high-dimensional semiparametric single-index models with unknown link functions. The proposed online procedure updates only the current data batch and summary statistics of historical data instead of re-accessing the entire raw data set. At the same time, we do not need to estimate the unknown link function, which is a highly challenging task. In addition, a generalized convex loss function is used in the proposed inference procedure. To illustrate the proposed method, we use the Huber loss function and the logistic regression model's negative log-likelihood. In this study, the asymptotic normality of the proposed online debiased Lasso estimators and the bounds of the proposed online Lasso estimators are investigated. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, extensive simulation studies have been conducted. We provide applications to Nasdaq stock prices and financial distress datasets.

Superatom Orbitals, Orbital Splitting and Structure Prediction of Pure Alkali Metal Clusters

Jellium model achieved great success in predicting stable clusters with closed electronic shells and zero spin. In order to explain the stability of open shell clusters, it is necessary to consider the case of non-degenerate energy levels. In this paper the energy levels in nine low-lying Li$_{19}$ clusters are analysed systematically through superatomic orbital splitting effect. It is found that for originally degenerate orbitals like five 1D orbitals, the more the orbital extends in the direction of the cluster extension, the lower the energy of the orbital becomes. So oblate Li$_{19}$ clusters have the orbital sequence of $1\mathrm{S}^2-1\mathrm{P}_{x/y}^{4}-1\mathrm{P}_{z}^{2}-1\mathrm{D}_{xy/x^2-y^2}^{4}-2\mathrm{S}^2-1\mathrm{D}_{xz/yz}^{4}-1\mathrm{D}_{z^2}^{1}$, while prolate Li$_{19}$ clusters have the sequence of $1\mathrm{S}^2-1\mathrm{P}_{z}^{2}-1\mathrm{P}_{x/y}^{4}-1\mathrm{D}_{z^2}^{2}-1\mathrm{D}_{xz/yz}^{4}-1\mathrm{D}_{xy/x^2-y^2}^{4}-2\mathrm{S}^1$. This electron configuration is applied to predict the shape and magnetic moment of the alkali metal Li$_{n}$ clusters. The stability of the Li$_{14}$ cluster can be successfully interpreted in the framework of orbital splitting effect without resorting to the super valence bond (SVB) model, indicating a non-spherical cluster can achieve good stability without meeting the magic number. It is also proposed that the orbital splitting can be used to predict the shape (prolate, oblate or sphere) and magnetic moment of clusters. 11 out of 16 predicted shapes of Li$_n(n=3-18)$ are consistent with the results obtained by the principle of minimum energy.

Pan More Gold from the Sand: Refining Open-domain Dialogue Training with Noisy Self-Retrieval Generation

Real human conversation data are complicated, heterogeneous, and noisy, from which building open-domain dialogue systems remains a challenging task. In fact, such dialogue data still contains a wealth of information and knowledge, however, they are not fully explored. In this paper, we show existing open-domain dialogue generation methods that memorize context-response paired data with autoregressive or encode-decode language models underutilize the training data. Different from current approaches, using external knowledge, we explore a retrieval-generation training framework that can take advantage of the heterogeneous and noisy training data by considering them as "evidence". In particular, we use BERTScore for retrieval, which gives better qualities of the evidence and generation. Experiments over publicly available datasets demonstrate that our method can help models generate better responses, even such training data are usually impressed as low-quality data. Such performance gain is comparable with those improved by enlarging the training set, even better. We also found that the model performance has a positive correlation with the relevance of the retrieved evidence. Moreover, our method performed well on zero-shot experiments, which indicates that our method can be more robust to real-world data.

Deep Dimension Reduction for Supervised Representation Learning

The goal of supervised representation learning is to construct effective data representations for prediction. Among all the characteristics of an ideal nonparametric representation of high-dimensional complex data, sufficiency, low dimensionality and disentanglement are some of the most essential ones. We propose a deep dimension reduction approach to learning representations with these characteristics. The proposed approach is a nonparametric generalization of the sufficient dimension reduction method. We formulate the ideal representation learning task as that of finding a nonparametric representation that minimizes an objective function characterizing conditional independence and promoting disentanglement at the population level. We then estimate the target representation at the sample level nonparametrically using deep neural networks. We show that the estimated deep nonparametric representation is consistent in the sense that its excess risk converges to zero. Our extensive numerical experiments using simulated and real benchmark data demonstrate that the proposed methods have better performance than several existing dimension reduction methods and the standard deep learning models in the context of classification and regression.

Diverse Title Generation for Stack Overflow Posts with Multiple Sampling Enhanced Transformer

Stack Overflow is one of the most popular programming communities where developers can seek help for their encountered problems. Nevertheless, if inexperienced developers fail to describe their problems clearly, it is hard for them to attract sufficient attention and get the anticipated answers. We propose M$_3$NSCT5, a novel approach to automatically generate multiple post titles from the given code snippets. Developers may use the generated titles to find closely related posts and complete their problem descriptions. M$_3$NSCT5 employs the CodeT5 backbone, which is a pre-trained Transformer model having an excellent language understanding and generation ability. To alleviate the ambiguity issue that the same code snippets could be aligned with different titles under varying contexts, we propose the maximal marginal multiple nucleus sampling strategy to generate multiple high-quality and diverse title candidates at a time for the developers to choose from. We build a large-scale dataset with 890,000 question posts covering eight programming languages to validate the effectiveness of M$_3$NSCT5. The automatic evaluation results on the BLEU and ROUGE metrics demonstrate the superiority of M$_3$NSCT5 over six state-of-the-art baseline models. Moreover, a human evaluation with trustworthy results also demonstrates the great potential of our approach for real-world application.

Assessing Mediational Processes Using Piecewise Linear Growth Curve Models with Individual Measurement Occasions

Longitudinal processes often unfold concurrently where the growth of two or more longitudinal outcomes are associated. Additionally, if the study under investigation is long, the growth curves may exhibit nonconstant change with respect to time. Multiple existing studies have developed multivariate growth models with nonlinear functional forms to explore joint development where two longitudinal records are correlated over time. However, the relationship between multiple longitudinal outcomes may also be unidirectional. Accordingly, it is of interest to estimate regression coefficients of such unidirectional paths. One statistical tool for such analyses is longitudinal mediation models. In this study, we develop two models to evaluate mediational processes where the linear-linear piecewise growth model is utilized to capture the change patterns. We define the mediational process as either the baseline covariate or the change in covariate influencing the change in the mediator, which, in turn, affects the change in the outcome. We present the proposed models through simulation studies and real-world data analyses. Our simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed mediational models can provide unbiased and accurate point estimates with target coverage probabilities with a 95% confidence interval. The empirical analyses demonstrate that the proposed model can estimate covariates' direct and indirect effects on the change in the outcome. We also provide the corresponding code for the proposed models.

Low-threshold nanolasers based on miniaturized bound states in the continuum

The pursuit of compact lasers with low-thresholds has imposed strict requirements on tight light confinements with minimized radiation losses. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been recently demonstrated as an effective mechanism to trap light along the out-of-plane direction, paving the way to low-threshold lasers. To date, most reported BIC lasers are still bulky due to the absence of in-plane light confinement. In this work, we combine BICs and photonic band gaps to realize three-dimensional (3D) light confinements, as referred to miniaturized (mini-) BICs. Together with 3D carrier confinements provided by quantum dots (QDs) as optical gain materials, we have realized highly-compact active BIC resonators with a record-high quality ($Q$) factor up to 32500, which enables single-mode continuous wave (CW) lasing with the lowest threshold of 80 W/cm$^{2}$ among the reported BIC lasers. In addidtion, our photon statistics measurements under both CW and pulsed excitations confirm the occurence of the phase transition from spontaneous emission to stimulated emission, further suggesting that conventional criteria of input-output and linewidth are not sufficient for claiming nanoscale lasing. Our work reveal a via path towards compact BIC lasers with ultra-low power consumption and potentially boost the applications in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QEDs), nonlinear optics and integrated photonics.

Semantic decomposition Network with Contrastive and Structural Constraints for Dental Plaque Segmentation

Segmenting dental plaque from images of medical reagent staining provides valuable information for diagnosis and the determination of follow-up treatment plan. However, accurate dental plaque segmentation is a challenging task that requires identifying teeth and dental plaque subjected to semantic-blur regions (i.e., confused boundaries in border regions between teeth and dental plaque) and complex variations of instance shapes, which are not fully addressed by existing methods. Therefore, we propose a semantic decomposition network (SDNet) that introduces two single-task branches to separately address the segmentation of teeth and dental plaque and designs additional constraints to learn category-specific features for each branch, thus facilitating the semantic decomposition and improving the performance of dental plaque segmentation. Specifically, SDNet learns two separate segmentation branches for teeth and dental plaque in a divide-and-conquer manner to decouple the entangled relation between them. Each branch that specifies a category tends to yield accurate segmentation. To help these two branches better focus on category-specific features, two constraint modules are further proposed: 1) contrastive constraint module (CCM) to learn discriminative feature representations by maximizing the distance between different category representations, so as to reduce the negative impact of semantic-blur regions on feature extraction; 2) structural constraint module (SCM) to provide complete structural information for dental plaque of various shapes by the supervision of an boundary-aware geometric constraint. Besides, we construct a large-scale open-source Stained Dental Plaque Segmentation dataset (SDPSeg), which provides high-quality annotations for teeth and dental plaque. Experimental results on SDPSeg datasets show SDNet achieves state-of-the-art performance.
