Gravitational wave cosmology

Gravitational waves (GWs) originating from cosmological sources offer direct insights into the physics of the primordial Universe, the fundamental nature of gravity, and the cosmic expansion of the Universe. In this review paper, we present a comprehensive overview of our recent advances in GW cosmology, supported by the national key research and development program of China, focusing on cosmological GW sources and their implications for fundamental physics and cosmology. We first discuss the generation mechanisms and characteristics of stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds generated by physical processes occurred in the early Universe, including those from inflation, phase transitions, and topological defects, and summarize current and possible future constraints from pulsar timing array and space-based detectors. Next, we explore the formation and observational prospects of primordial black holes as GW sources and their potential connection to dark matter. We then analyze how GWs are affected by large-scale structure, cosmological perturbations, and possible modifications of gravity on GW propagation, and how these effects can be used to test fundamental symmetry of gravity. Finally, we discuss the application of GW standard sirens in measuring the Hubble constant, the expansion history, and dark energy parameters, including their combination with electromagnetic observations. These topics together show how GW observations, especially with upcoming space-based detectors, such as LISA, Taiji, and Tianqin, can provide new information about the physics of the early Universe, cosmological evolution, and the nature of gravity.

Parity-violating corrections to the orbital precession of binary system

In this work, we test for gravitational parity violation in the PSR J1141-6545 system by analyzing the orbital plane inclination precession induced by the misalignment between the white dwarf's spin axis and the system's total angular momentum. Using the parity-violating metric of gravity that incorporates terms from both the exterior and boundary of the field source, we calculated corrections to the relative acceleration and orbital inclination precession rates, which exhibit significant deviations from the GR prediction. The parity-violating contributions depend on the projection of the spin vector along the orbital angular momentum direction, contrasting with GR, where it depends on the projection within the orbital plane. The corrections are perpendicular to GR contribution, highlighting a fundamental distinction. The exterior field correction is linear in the theoretical parameter and coupled to eccentricity $e$, while the boundary term correction is quadratic. By comparing these corrections with GR and incorporating observational uncertainty, we derive the constraint on the theoretical parameter, yielding $ \dot{f}_{\rm PV}\lesssim 10^6~ \rm m$.

Gravitational Waveform and Polarization from Binary Black Hole Inspiral in Dynamical Chern-Simons Gravity: From Generation to Propagation

We calculate the gravitational waveform radiated from spinning black holes (BHs) binary in dynamical Chern-Simons (dCS) gravity. The equation of motion (EOM) of the spinining binary BHs is derived based on the modified Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation for the spin-aligned circular orbits. The leading-order effects induced by the dCS theory contains spin-spin interaction and monopole-quadrupole interaction, which influence both the EOM of the binary system and corresponding gravitational waveform at the second post-Newtonian (PN) order (i.e., 2PN order). After reporting the waveforms, we investigate the polarization modes of gravitational waves (GWs) in dCS theory. None of the extra modes appears in this theory up to the considered PN order. Moreover, since the time scale of the binary merger is much smaller than that of the cosmological expansion, the parity-violating effect of the dCS theory does not appear in the process of GW generation. However, during the process of GW propagation, amplitude birefringence, a typical parity-violating effect, makes plus and cross modes convert to each other, which modifies the gravitational waveform at 1.5PN order.

Gravitational Radiation from Eccentric Binary Black Hole System in Dynamical Chern-Simons Gravity

Dynamical Chern-Simons (DCS) gravity, a typical parity-violating gravitational theory, modifies both the generation and propagation of gravitational waves from general relativity (GR). In this work, we derive the gravitational waveform radiated from a binary black hole system with eccentric orbits under the spin-aligned assumption in the DCS theory. Compared with GR, DCS modification enters the second-order post-Newtonian (2PN) approximation, affecting the spin-spin coupling and monopole-quadrupole coupling of binary motion. This modification produces an extra precession rate of periastron. This effect modulates the scalar and gravitational waveform through a quite low frequency. Additionally, the dissipation of conserved quantities results in the secular evolution of the semimajor axis and the eccentricity of binary orbits. Finally, the frequency-domain waveform is given in the post-circular scheme, requiring the initial eccentricity to be $\lesssim0.3$. This ready-to-use template will benefit the signal searches and improve the future constraint on DCS theory.

Constraints on the ghost-free parity-violating gravity from Laser-ranged Satellites

This paper explores the evolutionary behavior of the Earth-satellite binary system within the framework of the ghost-free parity-violating gravity and the corresponding discussion on the parity-violating effect from the laser-ranged satellites. For this purpose, we start our study with the Parameterized Post-Newtonian (PPN) metric of this gravity theory to study the orbital evolution of the satellites in which the spatial-time sector of the spacetime is modified due to the parity violation. With this modified PPN metric, we calculate the effects of the parity-violating sector of metrics on the time evolution of the orbital elements for an Earth-satellite binary system. We find that among the five orbital elements, the parity violation has no effect on the semi-latus rectum, while the eccentricity and ascending node are affected only in a periodic manner. These three orbital elements are the same as the results of general relativity and are also consistent with the observations of the present experiment. In particular, parity violation produces non-zero corrections to the eccentricity and pericenter, which will accumulate with the evolution of time, indicating that the parity violation of gravity produces observable secular effects. The observational constraint on the parity-violating effect is derived by confronting the theoretical prediction with the observation by the LAGEOS II pericenter advance, giving a constraint on the parity-violating parameter space from the satellite experiments.

Testing parity symmetry of gravity with gravitational waves

The examination of parity symmetry in gravitational interactions has drawn increasing attention. Although Einstein's General Relativity is parity-conserved, numerous theories of parity-violating (PV) gravity in different frameworks have recently been proposed for different motivations. In this review, we briefly summarize the recent progress of these theories, and focus on the observable effects of PV terms in the gravitational waves (GWs), which are mainly reflected in the difference between the left-hand and right-hand polarization modes. We are primarily concerned with the implications of these theories for GWs generated by the compact binary coalescences and the primordial GWs generated in the early Universe. The deviation of GW waveforms and/or primordial power spectrum can always be quantified by the energy scale of parity violation of the theory. Applying the current and future GW observation from laser interferometers and cosmic microwave background radiation, the current and potential constraints on the PV energy scales are presented, which indicates that the parity symmetry of gravity can be tested in high energy scale in this new era of gravitational waves.

Gravitational Faraday rotation of gravitational waves by a Kerr black hole

Gravitational Faraday Rotation (GFR) is a frame-dragging effect induced by rotating massive objects, which is one of the important, yet studied characteristics of lensed gravitational waves (GWs). In this work, we calculate the GFR angle $χ_g$ of GWs in the weak deflection limit, assuming it is lensed by a Kerr black hole (BH). We find that the GFR effect changes the initial polarization state of the lensed GW. Compared with the Einstein deflection angle, the dominant term of the rotation angle $χ_g$ is a second-order correction to the polarization angle, which depends on the light-of-sight component of BH angular momentum. Such a rotation is tiny and degenerates with the initial polarization angle. In some critical cases, the GFR angle is close to the detection capability of the third-generation GW detector network, although the degeneracy has to be broken.

Post-Newtonian parameters of ghost-free parity-violating gravities

We investigate the slow-motion and weak-field approximation of the general ghost-free parity-violating (PV) theory of gravity in the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) framework and derive the perturbative field equations, which are modified by the PV terms of this theory. The complete PPN parameters are obtained by solving the perturbative field equations. We find that all the PPN parameters are exactly the same as those in general relativity, except for an extra parameter $κ$, which is caused by the new curl-type term in the gravitomagnetic sector of the metric in this theory. We calculate the precession effects of gyroscopes in this theory and constrain the model parameters by the observations of the Gravity Probe B experiment.

Polarized primordial gravitational waves in the ghost-free parity-violating gravity

The tests of parity symmetry in the gravitational interaction is an attractive issue in the gravitational-wave astronomy. In the general theories of gravity with parity violation, one of the fundamental results is that the primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) produced during the slow-roll inflation is circularly polarized. In this article, we investigate the polarization of PGWs in the recently proposed ghost-free parity-violating gravity, which generalizes the Chern-Simons gravity by including the higher derivatives of the coupling scalar field. For this purpose, we first construct the approximate analytical solution to the mode function of the PGWs during the slow-roll inflation by using the uniform asymptotic approximation. With the approximate solution, we calculate explicitly the power spectrum and the corresponding circular polarization of the PGWs analytically, and find that the contributions of the higher derivatives of the coupling scalar field to the circular polarization is of the same order of magnitude as that of Chern-Simons gravity. The degree of circular polarization of PGWs is suppressed by the energy scale of parity violation in gravity, which is hardly detected on the basis solely of two-point statistics from future cosmic microwave background data.

Waveform of gravitational waves in the ghost-free parity-violating gravities

Gravitational waves (GWs) provide an excellent opportunity to test the gravity in the strong gravitational fields. In this article, we calculate the waveform of GWs, produced by the coalescence of compact binaries, in an extension of the Chern-Simons gravity by including higher derivatives of the coupling scalar field. By comparing the two circular polarization modes, we find the effects of amplitude birefringence and velocity birefringence of GWs in their propagation caused by the parity violation in gravity, which are explicitly presented in the GW waveforms by the amplitude and phase modifications respectively. Combining the two modes, we obtain the GW waveforms in the Fourier domain, and find that the deviations from those in General Relativity are dominated by effects of velocity birefringence of GWs. In addition, we also map the effects of the parity violation on the waveform onto the parameterized post-Einsteinian (PPE) framework and identify explicitly the PPE parameters.

Waveform of gravitational waves in the general parity-violating gravities

As an extension of our previous work [J.Qiao, T.Zhu, W.Zhao & A.Wang, arXiv:1909.03815], in this article, we calculate the effects of parity violation on gravitational-wave (GW) waveforms during their propagation in the most general parity-violating gravities, including Chern-Simons modified gravity, ghost-free scalar-tensor gravity, symmetric teleparallel equivalence of GR theory, Hořava-Lifshitz gravity and so on. For this purpose, we consider the GWs generated by the coalescence of compact binaries and concentrate on the imprints of the parity violation in the propagation of GWs. With a unified description of GW in the theories of parity-violating gravity, we study the effects of velocity and amplitude birefringence on the GW waveforms. Decomposing the GWs into the circular polarization modes, the two birefringence effects exactly correspond to the modifications in phase and amplitude of GW waveforms respectively. We find that, for each circular polarization mode, the amplitude, phase and velocity of GW can be modified by both the parity-violating terms and parity-conserving terms in gravity. Therefore, in order to test the parity symmetry in gravity, we should compare the difference between two circular polarization modes, rather than measuring an individual mode. Combining two circular modes, we obtain the GW waveforms in the Fourier domain, and obtain the deviations from those in General Relativity. The GW waveforms derived in this paper are also applicable to the theories of parity-conserving gravity, which have the modified dispersion relations (e.g. massive gravity, double special relativity theory, extra-dimensional theories, etc), or/and have the modified friction terms (e.g. nonlocal gravity, gravitational theory with time-dependent Planck mass, etc).

Inflationary perturbation spectra at next-to-leading slow-roll order in effective field theory of inflation

The effective field theory (EFT) of inflation provides an essential picture to explore the effects of the unknown high energy physics in the single scalar field inflation models. For a generic EFT of inflation, possible high energy corrections to simple slow-roll inflation can modify both the propagating speed and dispersion relations of the cosmological scalar and tensor perturbations. With the arrival of the era of precision cosmology, it is expected that these high energy corrections become more important and have to be taken into account in the analysis with future precise observational data. In this paper we study the observational predictions of the EFT of inflation by using the third-order uniform asymptotic approximation method. We calculate explicitly the primordial power spectra, spectral indices, running of the spectral indices for both scalar and tensor perturbations, and the ratio between tensor and scalar spectra. These expressions are all written in terms of the Hubble flow parameters and the flow of four new slow-roll parameters and expanded up to the next-to-leading order in the slow-roll expansions so they represent the most accurate results obtained so far in the literature. The flow of the four new slow-roll parameters, which arise from the four new operators introduced in the action of the EFT of inflation, can affect the primordial perturbation spectra at the leading-order and the corresponding spectral indices at the next-to-leading order.

Inflationary perturbation spectrum in extended effective field theory of inflation

The effective field theory (EFT) of inflation provides a natural framework to study the new physical effects on primordial perturbations. Recently a healthy extension of the EFT of inflation with high-order operators has been proposed, which avoids ghosts and meanwhile leads to a nonlinear dispersion relation of the scalar perturbations. This paper is devoted to studying the effects of these high-order operators by using the uniform asymptotic approximation method. In particular, we first construct the approximate analytical solution to the mode function of the scalar perturbations. Because of the presence of the high-order operators, the perturbation modes usually experience a period of non-adiabatic evolution before they cross the Hubble radius, which could lead to the production of excited states and modifications of the primordial perturbation spectrum. However, we show that the modified power spectrum is still nearly scale-invariant and the presence of the high-order operators can only affect the overall amplitude of the spectrum. In particular, after showing explicitly the impact of these new effects on particle production rate and perturbation spectrum, we explore their origin in detail.
