Winning solutions and post-challenge analyses of the ChaLearn AutoDL challenge 2019

This paper reports the results and post-challenge analyses of ChaLearn's AutoDL challenge series, which helped sorting out a profusion of AutoML solutions for Deep Learning (DL) that had been introduced in a variety of settings, but lacked fair comparisons. All input data modalities (time series, images, videos, text, tabular) were formatted as tensors and all tasks were multi-label classification problems. Code submissions were executed on hidden tasks, with limited time and computational resources, pushing solutions that get results quickly. In this setting, DL methods dominated, though popular Neural Architecture Search (NAS) was impractical. Solutions relied on fine-tuned pre-trained networks, with architectures matching data modality. Post-challenge tests did not reveal improvements beyond the imposed time limit. While no component is particularly original or novel, a high level modular organization emerged featuring a "meta-learner", "data ingestor", "model selector", "model/learner", and "evaluator". This modularity enabled ablation studies, which revealed the importance of (off-platform) meta-learning, ensembling, and efficient data management. Experiments on heterogeneous module combinations further confirm the (local) optimality of the winning solutions. Our challenge legacy includes an ever-lasting benchmark (http://autodl.chalearn.org), the open-sourced code of the winners, and a free "AutoDL self-service".

Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Quantum Correlations Between Two Accelerated Detectors

We quantify the quantum correlations between two accelerated detectors coupled to a scalar field in a cavity. It has been realized that an accelerated detector will experience a thermal bath, which is termed the Unruh effect. We examine the similarities and differences for quantum correlations regarding either temperature or acceleration. As the accelerations (resp. temperatures) of the detectors increase, the entanglement decreases to zero at some instant but the mutual information (resp. discord) can be amplified. As the accelerations increase but are in opposite directions, the quantum correlations decay. Importantly, we also reveal that larger quantum correlations can appear in certain nonequilibrium scenarios in which either the acceleration difference or the coupling difference becomes significant.

Island may not save the information paradox of Liouville black holes

By using the quantum extremal island formula, we perform a simple calculation of the generalized entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation from the two dimensional Liouville black hole. No reasonable island was found when extremizing the generalized entropy. We explain qualitatively the reason why the page curve cannot be reproduced in the present model. This suggests that the islands may not necessarily save the information paradox for the Liouville black holes.

Real-time Skeletonization for Sketch-based Modeling

Skeleton creation is an important phase in the character animation pipeline. However, handcrafting skeleton takes extensive labor time and domain knowledge. Automatic skeletonization provides a solution. However, most of the current approaches are far from real-time and lack the flexibility to control the skeleton complexity. In this paper, we present an efficient skeletonization method, which can be seamlessly integrated into the sketch-based modeling process in real-time. The method contains three steps: local sub-skeleton extraction; sub-skeleton connection; and global skeleton refinement. Firstly, the local skeleton is extracted from the processed polygon stroke and forms a subpart along with the sub-mesh. Then, local sub-skeletons are connected according to the intersecting relationships and the modeling sequence of subparts. Lastly, a global refinement method is proposed to give users coarse-to-fine control on the connected skeleton. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on a variety of examples created by both novices and professionals.

Asymmetric steerability of quantum equilibrium and nonequilibrium steady states through entanglement detection

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering describes a quantum correlation in addition to entanglement and Bell nonlocality. However, conceptually different from entanglement and Bell nonlocality, quantum steering has an asymmetric definition. Motivated by the asymmetric definition of quantum steering, we study the steerability of two-interacting qubits, which have asymmetric energy levels, coupled with asymmetric environments. The asymmetric (nonequilibrium) environments are two environments with different temperatures or chemical potentials. The Bloch-Redfield equation is applied to study the dynamics of two qubits and its long-time behavior. In our study, the steady-state steerability is determined by an experimentally friendly steering criteria, which demonstrates steering through the entanglement detection. Our results show that the steady states of two asymmetric qubits have the advantage for one direction of steering, compared to the symmetric setup. We also provide analytical results on the minimal coupling strength between the two qubits in order to be steerable. The asymmetric steerability is collectively determined by the nature of the two qubits and the influence from equilibrium or nonequilibrium environments. Nonequilibrium environments with the cost of nonzero entropy production can enhance the steerability in one direction. We also show the strict hierarchy of entanglement, steering and Bell nonlocality of the nonequilibrium steady states, which shows a richer structure of steering than entanglement and Bell nonlocality.

Free energy landscape and kinetics of phase transition in two coupled SYK models

We propose that the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the phase transition between wormhole and two black hole described by the two coupled SYK model can be investigated in terms of the stochastic dynamics on the underlying free energy landscape. We assume that the phase transition is a stochastic process under the thermal fluctuations. By quantifying the underlying free energy landscape, we study the phase diagram, the kinetic time and its fluctuations in details, which reveal the underlying thermodynamics and kinetics. It is shown that the first order phase transition between wormhole and two black hole described by two coupled SYK model is analogous to the Van der Waals phase transition. Therefore, the emergence of wormhole and two black hole phases, the phase transition and associated kinetics can be quantitatively addressed in our free energy landscape and kinetic framework through the dependence on the barrier height and the temperature.

AutoSmart: An Efficient and Automatic Machine Learning framework for Temporal Relational Data

Temporal relational data, perhaps the most commonly used data type in industrial machine learning applications, needs labor-intensive feature engineering and data analyzing for giving precise model predictions. An automatic machine learning framework is needed to ease the manual efforts in fine-tuning the models so that the experts can focus more on other problems that really need humans' engagement such as problem definition, deployment, and business services. However, there are three main challenges for building automatic solutions for temporal relational data: 1) how to effectively and automatically mining useful information from the multiple tables and the relations from them? 2) how to be self-adjustable to control the time and memory consumption within a certain budget? and 3) how to give generic solutions to a wide range of tasks? In this work, we propose our solution that successfully addresses the above issues in an end-to-end automatic way. The proposed framework, AutoSmart, is the winning solution to the KDD Cup 2019 of the AutoML Track, which is one of the largest AutoML competition to date (860 teams with around 4,955 submissions). The framework includes automatic data processing, table merging, feature engineering, and model tuning, with a time\&memory controller for efficiently and automatically formulating the models. The proposed framework outperforms the baseline solution significantly on several datasets in various domains.

High fidelity entanglement of neutral atoms via a Rydberg-mediated single-modulated-pulse controlled-PHASE gate

Neutral atom platform has become an attractive choice to study the science of quantum information and quantum simulation, where intense efforts have been devoted to the entangling processes between individual atoms. For the development of this area, two-qubit controlled-PHASE gate via Rydberg blockade is one of the most essential elements. Recent theoretical studies have suggested the advantages of introducing non-trivial waveform modulation into the gate protocol, which is anticipated to improve its performance towards the next stage. We report our recent experimental results in realizing a two-qubit controlled-PHASE($C_Z$) gate via off-resonant modulated driving(ORMD) embedded in two-photon transition for Rb atoms. It relies upon a single modulated driving pulse with a carefully calculated smooth waveform to gain the appropriate phase accumulations required by the two-qubit gate. Combining this $C_Z$ gate with global microwave pulses, two-atom entanglement is generated with the raw fidelity of 0.945(6). Accounting for state preparation and measurement (SPAM) errors, we extract the entanglement operation fidelity to be 0.980(7). Our work features completing the $C_Z$ gate operation within a single pulse to avoid shelved Rydberg population, thus demonstrate another promising route for realizing high-fidelity two-qubit gate for neutral atom platform.

Expansion Formulas of Basic Hypergeometric Series via the (1-xy,y-x)--Inversion and Its Applications

With the use of the $(f,g)$-matrix inversion under specializations that $f=1-xy,g=y-x$, we establish an $(1-xy,y-x)$-expansion formula. When specialized to basic hypergeometric series, this $(1-xy,y-x)$-expansion formula leads us to some expansion formulas expressing any ${}_{r}ϕ_{s}$ series in variable $x~t$ in terms of a linear combination of ${}_{r+2}ϕ_{s+1}$ series in $t$, as well as various specifications. All these results can be regarded as common generalizations of many konwn expansion formulas in the setting of $q$-series. As specific applications, some new transformation formulas of $q$-series including new approach to the Askey-Wilson polynomials, the Rogers-Fine identity, Andrews' four-parametric reciprocity theorem and Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$ summation formula, as well as a transformation for certain well-poised Bailey pairs, are presented.

Universal Quantum Fluctuation-Dissipation Relation for Systems Far From Equilibrium

Fluctuations associated with relaxations in far-from-equilibrium regime is of fundamental interest for a large variety of systems within broad scales. Recent advances in techniques such as spectroscopy have generated the possibility for measuring the fluctuations of the mesoscopic systems in connection to the relaxation processes when driving the underlying quantum systems far from equilibrium. We present a general nonequilibrium Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT) for quantum Markovian processes where the detailed-balance condition is violated. Apart from the fluctuations, the relaxation involves extra correlation that is governed by the quantum curl flux emerged in the far-from-equilibrium regime. Such a contribution vanishes for the thermal equilibrium, so that the conventional FDT is recovered. We finally apply the nonequilibrium FDT to the molecular junctions, elaborating the detailed-balance-breaking effects on the optical transmission spectrum. Our results have the advantage of and exceed the scope of the fluctuation-dissipation relation in the perturbative and near equilibrium regimes, and is of broad interest for the study of quantum thermodynamics.ation in the perturbative and near equilibrium regimes, and is of broad interest for the study of quantum thermodynamics.

Equilibrium and nonequilibrium quantum correlations between two detectors in curved space time

We investigate the equilibrium and nonequilibrium quantum information correlations encoded in two-qubit system (near the horizon of a Kerr black hole). We study the impact of mass and the angular momentum, and further the local curvature or accelerations on the behaviors of the quantum correlations between two qubits. We show the quantum information of two qubits is encoded in the space time structure. In nonequilibrium case, the nonequilibrium can also contribute to the correlations.

Hayden-Preskill protocol and decoding Hawking radiation at finite temperature

We study the Hayden-Preskill thought experiment at finite temperature and obtain the decoupling condition that the information thrown into an old black hole can be extracted by decoding the Hawking radiation. We then consider the decoding Hayden-Preskill protocol at finite temperature assuming the observer outside the black hole who has the access to the full radiation and the unitary dynamics of the black hole. We also consider the cases when the Hawking radiation has noise and decoherence in the storage. The decoding probabilities and the corresponding fidelities are calculated. It is shown that for all the three cases we have considered, the decoding fidelities are less than unity in general. This result indicates that at finite temperature, the decoding strategy and the recovery algorithm is harder to realize than that at infinite temperature.

Machamp: A Generalized Entity Matching Benchmark

Entity Matching (EM) refers to the problem of determining whether two different data representations refer to the same real-world entity. It has been a long-standing interest of the data management community and many efforts have been paid in creating benchmark tasks as well as in developing advanced matching techniques. However, existing benchmark tasks for EM are limited to the case where the two data collections of entities are structured tables with the same schema. Meanwhile, the data collections for matching could be structured, semi-structured, or unstructured in real-world scenarios of data science. In this paper, we come up with a new research problem -- Generalized Entity Matching to satisfy this requirement and create a benchmark Machamp for it. Machamp consists of seven tasks having diverse characteristics and thus provides good coverage of use cases in real applications. We summarize existing EM benchmark tasks for structured tables and conduct a series of processing and cleaning efforts to transform them into matching tasks between tables with different structures. Based on that, we further conduct comprehensive profiling of the proposed benchmark tasks and evaluate popular entity matching approaches on them. With the help of Machamp, it is the first time that researchers can evaluate EM techniques between data collections with different structures.

The effect of nonequilibrium entropy production on the quantum Fisher information and correlations

In this study, we apply quantum master equations beyond secular approximation, and investigate the nonequilibrium thermodynamic cost of enhanced quantum metrology and quantum correlations. We find that the nonequilibrium conditions enhance quantum Fisher information (QFI) and quantum correlations predominantly for weak tunneling scenarios. The enhancement is assisted by a corresponding increase of the thermodynamic cost characterized by the entropy production rate (EPR). For the strong tunneling regimes, the QFI and quantum correlations can not be unceasingly boosted by higher thermodynamic costs and decay once the system is overburdened with extremely large energy currents. The result indicates that for open systems with weak tunneling rates, thermodynamic cost can be potentially exploited to improve the quantum metrology and quantum correlations.

Page curves for a family of exactly solvable evaporating black holes

We study the entanglement entropy of a one-parameter family of exactly solvable gravities in the 2-dimensional asymptotically-flat space. The islands and Page curves of eternal, evaporating and bath-removed black holes are investigated. The different theories in this parameter class are identified through field redefinitions which leave the island invariant. The Page transition is found to occur at the first a third of the black hole life time in the evaporating case for this family of solutions. In addition, we consider gluing the equilibrium black hole and the evaporating one along a null trajectory and study the effect of gluing on the islands and Page curves. In the glued space, the island jumps across two different geometries at a certain retarded time. As a result, the Page transition is stretched and split into two separate ones -- the first transition happens when the net entropy generation stops and the second one occurs as the early radiation effectively starts to become purified. Finally, we discuss the issues concerning the inconsistent rates of purification and the paradox related to the state of the radiation.
