Further results on Andrews--Yee's two identities for mock theta functions $ω(z;q)$ and $v(z;q)$

In this paper, by the method of comparing coefficients and the inverse technique, we establish the corresponding variate forms of two identities of Andrews and Yee for mock theta functions, as well as a few allied but unusual $q$-series identities. Among includes a new Bailey pair from which a product formula of two ${}_2ϕ_1$ series is derived. Further, we focus on two finite $q$-series summations arising from Andrews and Yee's mock theta function identities and expound some recurrence relations and transformation formulas behind them.

An Efficient Method to Transform SAT problems to Binary Integer Linear Programming Problem

In computational complexity theory, a decision problem is NP-complete when it is both in NP and NP-hard. Although a solution to a NP-complete can be verified quickly, there is no known algorithm to solve it in polynomial time. There exists a method to reduce a SAT (Satifiability) problem to Subset Sum Problem (SSP) in the literature, however, it can only be applied to small or medium size problems. Our study is to find an efficient method to transform a SAT problem to a mixed integer linear programming problem in larger size. Observing the feature of variable-clauses constraints in SAT, we apply linear inequality model (LIM) to the problem and propose a method called LIMSAT. The new method can work efficiently for very large size problem with thousands of variables and clauses in SAT tested using up-to-date benchmarks.

A new inflationary Universe scenario with inhomogeneous quantum vacuum

We investigate the quantum vacuum and find the fluctuations can lead to the inhomogeneous quantum vacuum. We find that the vacuum fluctuations can significantly influence the cosmological inhomogeneity, which is different from what previously expected. By introducing the modified Green's function, we reach a new inflationary scenario which can explain why the Universe is still expanding without slowing down. We also calculate the tunneling amplitude of the Universe based on the inhomogeneous vacuum. We find that the inhomogeneity can lead to the penetration of the universe over the potential barrier faster than previously thought.

GPI-based Secrecy Rate Maximization Beamforming Scheme for Wireless Transmission with AN-aided Directional Modulation

In a directional modulation network, a general power iterative (GPI) based beamforming scheme is proposed to maximize the secrecy rate (SR), where there are two optimization variables required to be optimized. The first one is the useful precoding vector of transmitting confidential messages to the desired user while the second one is the artificial noise (AN) projection matrix of forcing more AN to eavesdroppers. In such a secure network, the paramount problem is how to design or optimize the two optimization variables by different criteria. To maximize the SR (Max-SR), an alternatively iterative structure (AIS) is established between the AN projection matrix and the precoding vector for confidential messages. To choose a good initial value of iteration process of GPI, the proposed Max-SR method can readily double its convergence speed compared to the random choice of initial value. With only four iterations, it may rapidly converge to its rate ceil. From simulation results, it follows that the SR performance of the proposed AIS of GPI-based Max-SR is much better than those of conventional leakage-based and null-space projection methods in the medium and large signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions, and its achievable SR performance gain gradually increases as SNR increases.

Atomic Interferometric Gravitational-wave Space Observatory (AIGSO)

We propose a space-borne gravitational-wave detection scheme, called atom interferometric gravitational-wave space observatory (AIGSO). It is motivated by the progress in the atomic matter-wave interferometry, which solely utilizes the standing light waves to split, deflect and recombine the atomic beam. Our scheme consists of three drag-free satellites orbiting the Earth. The phase shift of AIGSO is dominated by the Sagnac effect of gravitational-waves, which is proportional to the area enclosed by the atom interferometer, the frequency and amplitude of gravitational-waves. The scheme has a strain sensitivity $< 10^{-20}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ in the 100 mHz-10 Hz frequency range, which fills in the detection gap between space-based and ground-based laser interferometric detectors. Thus, our proposed AIGSO can be a good complementary detection scheme to the space-borne laser interferometric schemes, such as LISA. Considering the current status of relevant technology readiness, we expect our AIGSO to be a promising candidate for the future space-based gravitational-wave detection plan.

Clinical and Non-clinical Effects on Surgery Duration: Statistical Modeling and Analysis

Surgery duration is usually used as an input to the operation room (OR) allocation and surgery scheduling problems. A good estimation of surgery duration benefits the operation planning in ORs. In contrast, we would like to investigate whether the allocation decisions in turn influence surgery duration. Using almost two years of data from a large hospital in China, we find evidence in support of our conjecture. Surgery duration decreases with the number of surgeries a surgeon performs in a day. Numerically, surgery duration will decrease by 10 minutes on average if a surgeon performs one more surgery. Furthermore, we find a non-linear relationship between surgery duration and the number of surgeries allocated to an OR. Also, a surgery's duration is affected by its position in a sequence of surgeries performed by one surgeon. In addition, surgeons exhibit different patterns on the effects of surgery type and position. Since the findings are obtained from a particular data set, We do not claim the generalizability. Instead, the analysis in this paper provides insights into surgery duration study in ORs.

Potential landscape and flux field theory for turbulence and nonequilibrium fluid systems

Turbulence is a paradigm for far-from-equilibrium systems without time reversal symmetry. To capture the nonequilibrium irreversible nature of turbulence and investigate its implications, we develop a potential landscape and flux field theory for turbulent flow and more general nonequilibrium fluid systems governed by stochastic Navier-Stokes equations. We find that equilibrium fluid systems with time reversibility are characterized by a detailed balance constraint that quantifies the detailed balance condition. In nonequilibrium fluid systems with nonequilibrium steady states, detailed balance breaking leads directly to a pair of interconnected consequences, namely, the non-Gaussian potential landscape and the irreversible probability flux, forming a 'nonequilibrium trinity'. The nonequilibrium trinity characterizes the nonequilibrium irreversible essence of fluid systems with intrinsic time irreversibility and is manifested in various aspects of these systems. The nonequilibrium stochastic dynamics of fluid systems including turbulence with detailed balance breaking is shown to be driven by both the non-Gaussian potential landscape gradient and the irreversible probability flux, together with the reversible convective force and the stochastic stirring force. We reveal an underlying connection of the energy flux essential for turbulence energy cascade to the irreversible probability flux and the non-Gaussian potential landscape generated by detailed balance breaking. Using the energy flux as a center of connection, we demonstrate that the four-fifths law in fully developed turbulence is a consequence and reflection of the nonequilibrium trinity. We also show how the nonequilibrium trinity can affect the scaling laws in turbulence.

Predicting Surgery Duration from a New Perspective: Evaluation from a Database on Thoracic Surgery

BACKGROUND: Clinical factors influence surgery duration. This study also investigated non-clinical effects. METHODS: 22 months of data about thoracic operations in a large hospital in China were reviewed. Linear and nonlinear regression models were used to predict the duration of the operations. Interactions among predictors were also considered. RESULTS: Surgery duration decreased with the number of operations a surgeon performed in a day (P<0.001). Also, it was found that surgery duration decreased with the number of operations allocated to an OR as long as there were no more than four surgeries per day in the OR (P<0.001), but increased with the number of operations if it was more than four (P<0.01). The duration of surgery was affected by its position in a sequence of surgeries performed by a surgeon. In addition, surgeons exhibited different patterns of the effects of surgery type for surgeries in different positions in the day. CONCLUSIONS: Surgery duration was affected not only by clinical effects but also some non-clinical effects. Scheduling and allocation decisions significantly influenced surgery duration.

High Fidelity Single-qubit Gates of a Single Neutral Atom in the Magic-Intensity Optical Dipole Trap

We demonstrate high fidelity single-qubit gate operation in a trapped single neutral atom. The atom is trapped in the recently invented magic-intensity optical dipole trap (MI-ODT) with more stable magnetic field. The MI-ODT efficiently mitigates the detrimental effects of light shifts thus sufficiently improves the performance of single qubit-gates. The gates are driven with microwave, and the fidelity of gate operation is characterized by using the randomized benchmarking method. We obtain an average error per Clifford gate of $3.0(7)\times10^{-5}$ which is much below the error threshold ($10^{-4}$) for fault-tolerance. This error is found to be dominated by qubit dephasing, and the corresponding coherence time relevant to the Clifford gates is also measured experimentally. This work is an essential step toward the construction of a scalable quantum computer with neutral atoms trapped in an MI-ODT array.

Calibration of atomic trajectories in a large-area dual-atom-interferometer gyroscope

We propose and demonstrate a method for calibrating atomic trajectories in a large-area dual-atom-interferometer gyroscope. The atom trajectories are monitored by modulating and delaying the Raman transition, and they are precisely calibrated by controlling the laser orientation and the bias magnetic field. To improve the immunity to the gravity effect and the common phase noise, the symmetry and the overlapping of two large-area atomic interference loops are optimized by calibrating the atomic trajectories and by aligning the Raman-laser orientations. The dual-atom-interferometer gyroscope is applied in the measurement of the Earth rotation. The sensitivity is $1.2\times10^{-6}$ rad/s/$\sqrt{Hz}$, and the long-term stability is $6.2\times10^{-8}$ rad/s $@$ $2000$ s.

On Andrews--Warnaar's identities of partial theta functions

In this paper we set up a bivariate representation of partial theta functions which not only unifies some famous identities for partial theta functions due to Andrews and Warnaar, et al. but also unveils a new characteristic of such identities. As further applications, we establish a general form of Warnaar's identity and a general $q$--series transformation associated with Bailey pairs via the use of the power series expansion of partial theta functions.

Pilot Optimization and Power Allocation for OFDM-based Full-duplex Relay Networks with IQ-imbalances

In OFDM relay networks with IQ imbalances and full-duplex relay station (RS), how to optimize pilot pattern and power allocation using the criterion of minimizing the sum of mean square errors (Sum-MSE) for the frequency-domain least-squares channel estimator has a heavy impact on self-interference cancellation. Firstly, the design problem of pilot pattern is casted as a convex optimization. From the KKT conditions, the optimal analytical expression is derived given the fixed source power and RS power. Subsequently, an optimal power allocation (OPA) strategy is proposed and presented to further alleviate the effect of Sum-MSE under the total transmit power sum constraint of source node and RS. Simulation results show that the proposed OPA performs better than equal power allocation (EPA) in terms of Sum-MSE, and the Sum-MSE performance gain grows with deviating $ρ$ from the value of $ρ^o$ minimizing the Sum-MSE, where $ρ$ is defined as the average ratio of the residual SI channel at RS to the intended channel from source to RS. For example, the OPA achieves about 5dB SNR gain over EPA by shrinking or stretching $ρ$ with a factor $4$. More importantly, as $ρ$ decreases or increases more, the performance gain becomes more significant.

Molecular near-infrared transitions determined with sub-kHz accuracy

Precise molecular transition frequencies are of great interest in the test of fundamental physics and also in various applications. Two well isolated ro-vibrational transitions of $^{12}$C$^{16}$O at 1.57 $μ$m, R(9) and R(10) in the second overtone band molecule, were measured by a comb-locked cavity ring-down spectrometer. Despite the weakness of the lines (Einstein coefficient $A\simeq 0.008$ s$^{-1}$), Lamb-dip spectra were recorded with a signal-to-noise ratio over 1000, and the line positions were determined to be 191 360 212 763.7 and 191 440 612 664.8 kHz respectively, with an uncertainty of 0.5 kHz ($δν/ν=2.6\times 10^{-12}$). The present work demonstrated the possibility to explore extensive molecular lines in the near-infrared with sub-kHz accuracy.

Funneled Potential and Flux Landscapes Dictate the Stabilities of both the States and the Flow: Fission Yeast Cell Cycle

We have uncovered that the non-equilibrium network dynamics and global properties are determined by two essential features: the potential landscape and the flux landscape. We have found that the funneled potential landscape is crucial for the stability of the states on the cell cycle, however, the stabilities of the oscillation states cannot guarantee the stable directional flows. We have uncovered that the funneled flux landscape is important for the emergence and maintenance of the stable limit cycle oscillation flow. This work will allow us to identify the key factors and structure elements of the networks in determining the stability, speed and robustness of the fission yeast cell cycle oscillations. We see that the nonequilibriumness characterized by the degree of detailed balance breaking from the energy pump quantified by the flux is the cause of the energy dissipation for initiating and sustaining the replications essential for the origin and evolution of life. Regulating the cell cycle speed is crucial for designing the prevention and curing strategy of cancer.

Origin of long-lived coherence and excitation dynamics in pigment-protein complexes

We explore the mechanism for the long-lived quantum coherence by considering the discrete phonon modes: these vibrational modes effectively weaken the exciton-environment interaction, due to the new composite (polaron) formed by excitons and vibrons. This subsequently demonstrates the role of vibrational coherence which greatly contributes to long-lived feature of the excitonic coherence that has been observed in femtosecond experiments. The estimation of the timescale of coherence elongated by vibrational modes is given in an analytical manner. To test the validity of our theory, we study the pigment-protein complex in detail by exploring the energy transfer and coherence dynamics. The ground-state vibrational coherence generated by incoherent radiations is shown to be long-survived and is demonstrated to be significant in promoting the excitation energy transfer. This is attributed to the nonequilibriumness of the system caused by the detailed-balance-breaking, which funnels the downhill migration of excitons.

Nonequilibrium-induced enhancement of dynamical quantum coherence and entanglement of spin arrays

The random magnetic field produced by nuclear spins has long been viewed as the dominating source of decoherence in the quantum-dot based spins. Here we obtain in both exact and analytical manner the dynamics of spin qubits coupled to nuclear spin environments via the hyperfine interaction, going beyond the weak system-bath interaction and Markovian approximation. We predict that the detailed-balance breaking produced by chemical potential gradient in nuclear baths leads to the rapid oscillations of populations, quantum coherence and entanglement, which are absent in the conventional case (i.e., Overhauser noise). This is attributed to the nonequilibrium feature of the system as shown in the relation between the oscillation period and the chemical potential imbalance. Our results reveal the essentiality of nonequilibriumness with detailed-balance breaking for enhancing the dynamical coherence and entanglement of spin qubits. Moreover, our exact solution explicitly demonstrates that the non-Markovian bath comprised by nuclear spins can preserve the collective quantum state, due to the recovery of coherence. Finally, we propose an experiment using ultracold trapped ions to observe these nonequilibrium and memory effects.

The emergence of the two cell fates and their associated switching for a negative auto-regulating gene

Decisions in the cell that lead to its ultimate fate are important for cellular functions such as proliferation, growth, differentiation, development and death. Understanding this decision process is imperative for advancements in the treatment of diseases such as cancer. It is clear that underlying gene regulatory networks and surrounding environments of the cells are crucial for function. The self-repressor is a very abundant gene regulatory motif, and is often believed to have only one cell fate. In this study, we elucidate the effects of microenvironments mimicking the epigenetic effects on cell fates through the introduction of inducers capable of binding to a self-repressing gene product (protein), thus regulating the associated gene. This alters the effective regulatory binding speed of the self-repressor regulatory protein to its destination DNA without changing the gene itself. The steady state observations and real time monitoring of the self-repressor expression dynamics reveal the emergence of the two cell fates, The simulations are consistent with the experimental findings. We provide physical and quantitative explanations for the origin of the two phenotypic cell fates. We find that two cell fates, rather than a single fate, and their associated switching dynamics emerge from a change in effective gene regulation strengths. The switching time scale is quantified. Our results reveal a new mechanism for the emergence of multiple cell fates. This provides an origin for the heterogeneity often observed among cell states, while illustrating the influence of microenvironments on cell fates and their decision-making processes without genetic changes

Information Landscape and Flux, Mutual Information Rate Decomposition and Entropy Production

We explore the dynamics of information systems. We show that the driving force for information dynamics is determined by both the information landscape and information flux which determines the equilibrium time reversible and the nonequilibrium time-irreversible behaviours of the system respectively. We further demonstrate that the mutual information rate between the two subsystems can be decomposed into the time-reversible and time-irreversible parts respectively, analogous to the information landscape-flux decomposition for dynamics. Finally, we uncover the intimate relation between the nonequilibrium thermodynamics in terms of the entropy production rates and the time-irreversible part of the mutual information rate. We demonstrate the above features by the dynamics of a bivariate Markov chain.
