Averaging with a time-dependent perturbation parameter

Motivated by recent problems in mathematical cosmology, in which temporal averaging methods are applied in order to analyze the future asymptotics of models which exhibit oscillatory behavior, we provide a theorem concerning the large-time behavior for solutions of a general class of systems. We thus propose our result to be applicable to a wide range of problems in spatially homogenous cosmology with oscillatory behavior. Mathematically the theorem builds upon the standard theory of averaging in non-linear dynamical systems.

Global Classical Solutions to the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation without Angular Cut-off

We prove the unique existence and exponential decay of global in time classical solutions to the special relativistic Boltzmann equation without any angular cut-off assumptions with initial perturbations in some weighted Sobolev spaces. We consider perturbations of the relativistic Maxwellian equilibrium states. We work in the case of a spatially periodic box. We consider the general conditions on the collision kernel from Dudyński and Ekiel-Jeźewska (Commun Math Phys \textbf{115}(4):607--629, 1985). Additionally, we prove sharp constructive upper and coercive lower bounds for the linearized relativistic Boltzmann collision operator in terms of a geometric fractional Sobolev norm; this shows that a spectral gap exists and that this behavior is similar to that of the non-relativistic case as shown by Gressman and Strain (Journal of AMS \textbf{24}(3), 771--847, 2011). Lastly, we derive the relativistic analogue of Carleman dual representation of Boltzmann collision operator. This is the first global existence and stability result for relativistic Boltzmann equation without angular cutoff and this resolves the open question of perturbative global existence for the relativistic kinetic theory without the Grad's angular cut-off assumption.

The relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation near equilibrium

The relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation (or the relativistic Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation) describes the dynamics of single-species fast-moving quantum particles. With the recent development of the relativistic quantum mechanics, the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation has been widely used in physics and engineering such as in the quantum collision experiments and the simulations of electrons in graphene. In spite of such importance, there has been no mathematical theory on the existence of solutions for the relativistic quantum Boltzmann equation to the best of authors' knowledge. In this paper, we prove the global existence of a unique classical solution to the relativistic Boltzmann equation for both bosons and fermions when the initial distribution is nearby a global equilibrium.

$L^2$ decay for the linearized Landau equation with the specular boundary condition

In this paper, we develop an alternative approach to establish the $L^2$ decay estimate for the linearized Landau equation in a bounded domain with specular boundary condition. The proof is based on the methodology of proof by contradiction motivated by [Guo, Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 55(9):1104-1135, 2002] and [Guo, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 197(3):713-809, 2010].

The model reduction of the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck system to the Poisson-Nernst-Planck system via the Deep Neural Network Approach

The model reduction of a mesoscopic kinetic dynamics to a macroscopic continuum dynamics has been one of the fundamental questions in mathematical physics since Hilbert's time. In this paper, we consider a diagram of the diffusion limit from the Vlasov-Poisson-Fokker-Planck (VPFP) system on a bounded interval with the specular reflection boundary condition to the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) system with the no-flux boundary condition. We provide a Deep Learning algorithm to simulate the VPFP system and the PNP system by computing the time-asymptotic behaviors of the solution and the physical quantities. We analyze the convergence of the neural network solution of the VPFP system to that of the PNP system via the Asymptotic-Preserving (AP) scheme. Also, we provide several theoretical evidence that the Deep Neural Network (DNN) solutions to the VPFP and the PNP systems converge to the a priori classical solutions of each system if the total loss function vanishes.

On the Determinant Problem for the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation

This article considers a long-outstanding open question regarding the Jacobian determinant for the relativistic Boltzmann equation in the center-of-momentum coordinates. For the Newtonian Boltzmann equation, the center-of-momentum coordinates have played a large role in the study of the Newtonian non-cutoff Boltzmann equation, in particular, we mention the widely used cancellation lemma by Alexandre et al. (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 152(4):327-355, 2000). In this article we calculate specifically the very complicated Jacobian determinant, in ten variables, for the relativistic collision map from the momentum $p$ to the post-collisional momentum $p'$; specifically we calculate the determinant for $p\mapsto u = θp'+\left(1-θ\right)p$ for $θ\in [0,1]$. Afterwards we give an upper-bound for this determinant that has no singularity in both $p$ and $q$ variables. Next we give an example where we prove that the Jacobian goes to zero in a specific pointwise limit. We further explain the results of our numerical study which shows that the Jacobian determinant has a very large number of distinct points at which it is machine zero. This generalizes the work of Glassey-Strauss (Transport Theory Statist. Phys. 20(1):55-68, 1991) and Guo-Strain (Comm. Math. Phys. 310(3):649-673, 2012). These conclusions make it difficult to envision a direct relativistic analog of the Newtonian cancellation lemma in the center-of-momentum coordinates.

Propagation of $L^p$ estimates for the Spatially Homogeneous Relativistic Boltzmann Equation

In this paper, we prove the propagation of $L^p$ upper bounds for the spatially homogeneous relativistic Boltzmann equation for any $1<p<\infty$. We consider the case of relativistic \textit{hard ball} with Grad's angular cutoff. Our proof is based on a detailed study of the interrelationship between the relative momenta, the regularity and the $L^p$ estimates for the gain operator, the development of the relativistic Carleman representation, and several estimates on the relativistic hypersurface $E^{v_*}_{v'-v}$. We also derive a Pythagorean theorem for the \textit{relative momenta} $g(v,v_*),$ $g(v,v')$, and $g(v',v_*)$, which has a crucial role in the reduction of the momentum singularity.

Trend to Equilibrium for the Kinetic Fokker-Planck Equation via the Neural Network Approach

The issue of the relaxation to equilibrium has been at the core of the kinetic theory of rarefied gas dynamics. In the paper, we introduce the Deep Neural Network (DNN) approximated solutions to the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation in a bounded interval and study the large-time asymptotic behavior of the solutions and other physically relevant macroscopic quantities. We impose the varied types of boundary conditions including the inflow-type and the reflection-type boundaries as well as the varied diffusion and friction coefficients and study the boundary effects on the asymptotic behaviors. These include the predictions on the large-time behaviors of the pointwise values of the particle distribution and the macroscopic physical quantities including the total kinetic energy, the entropy, and the free energy. We also provide the theoretical supports for the pointwise convergence of the neural network solutions to the \textit{a priori} analytic solutions. We use the library \textit{PyTorch}, the activation function \textit{tanh} between layers, and the \textit{Adam} optimizer for the Deep Learning algorithm.

The Landau equation with the specular reflection boundary condition

The existence and stability of the Landau equation (1936) in a general bounded domain with a physical boundary condition is a long-outstanding open problem. This work proves the global stability of the Landau equation with the Coulombic potential in a general smooth bounded domain with the specular reflection boundary condition for initial perturbations of the Maxwellian equilibrium states. The highlight of this work also comes from the low-regularity assumptions made for the initial distribution. This work generalizes the recent global stability result for the Landau equation in a periodic box (KGH-2016). Our methods consist of the generalization of the wellposedness theory for the Fokker-Planck equation (HJV-2014, HJJ-2018) and the extension of the boundary value problem to a whole space problem, as well as the use of a recent extension of De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory for the kinetic Fokker-Planck equations (GIMV-2016) and the Morrey estimates (Polidoro-Ragusa-1998) to further control the velocity derivatives, which ensures the uniqueness. Our methods provide a new understanding of the grazing collisions in the Landau theory for an initial-boundary value problem.
