TextGuider: Training-Free Guidance for Text Rendering via Attention Alignment

Despite recent advances, diffusion-based text-to-image models still struggle with accurate text rendering. Several studies have proposed fine-tuning or training-free refinement methods for accurate text rendering. However, the critical issue of text omission, where the desired text is partially or entirely missing, remains largely overlooked. In this work, we propose TextGuider, a novel training-free method that encourages accurate and complete text appearance by aligning textual content tokens and text regions in the image. Specifically, we analyze attention patterns in Multi-Modal Diffusion Transformer(MM-DiT) models, particularly for text-related tokens intended to be rendered in the image. Leveraging this observation, we apply latent guidance during the early stage of denoising steps based on two loss functions that we introduce. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in test-time text rendering, with significant gains in recall and strong results in OCR accuracy and CLIP score.

RoCOCO: Robustness Benchmark of MS-COCO to Stress-test Image-Text Matching Models

With the extensive use of vision-language models in various downstream tasks, evaluating their robustness is crucial. In this paper, we propose a benchmark for assessing the robustness of vision-language models. We believe that a robust model should properly understand both linguistic and visual semantics and be resilient to explicit variations. In pursuit of this goal, we create new variants of texts and images in the MS-COCO test set and re-evaluate the state-of-the-art (SOTA) models with the new data. Specifically, we alter the meaning of text by replacing a word, and generate visually altered images that maintain some visual context while introducing noticeable pixel changes through image mixing techniques. Our evaluations on the proposed benchmark reveal substantial performance degradation in many SOTA models (e.g., Image-to-Text Recall@1: 81.9\% $\rightarrow$ 48.4\% in BLIP, 66.1\% $\rightarrow$ 37.6\% in VSE$\infty$), with the models often favoring the altered texts/images over the original ones. This indicates the current vision-language models struggle with subtle changes and often fail to understand the overall context of texts and images. Based on these findings, we propose semantic contrastive loss and visual contrastive loss to learn more robust embedding. Hierarchical Visual Feature Aggregation for OCR-Free Document Understanding

We present a novel OCR-free document understanding framework based on pretrained Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs). Our approach employs multi-scale visual features to effectively handle various font sizes within document images. To address the increasing costs of considering the multi-scale visual inputs for MLLMs, we propose the Hierarchical Visual Feature Aggregation (HVFA) module, designed to reduce the number of input tokens to LLMs. Leveraging a feature pyramid with cross-attentive pooling, our approach effectively manages the trade-off between information loss and efficiency without being affected by varying document image sizes. Furthermore, we introduce a novel instruction tuning task, which facilitates the model's text-reading capability by learning to predict the relative positions of input text, eventually minimizing the risk of truncated text caused by the limited capacity of LLMs. Comprehensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach, demonstrating superior performance in various document understanding tasks.

Active Learning for Finely-Categorized Image-Text Retrieval by Selecting Hard Negative Unpaired Samples

Securing a sufficient amount of paired data is important to train an image-text retrieval (ITR) model, but collecting paired data is very expensive. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose an active learning algorithm for ITR that can collect paired data cost-efficiently. Previous studies assume that image-text pairs are given and their category labels are asked to the annotator. However, in the recent ITR studies, the importance of category label is decreased since a retrieval model can be trained with only image-text pairs. For this reason, we set up an active learning scenario where unpaired images (or texts) are given and the annotator provides corresponding texts (or images) to make paired data. The key idea of the proposed AL algorithm is to select unpaired images (or texts) that can be hard negative samples for existing texts (or images). To this end, we introduce a novel scoring function to choose hard negative samples. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed method on Flickr30K and MS-COCO datasets.

MoST: Motion Style Transformer between Diverse Action Contents

While existing motion style transfer methods are effective between two motions with identical content, their performance significantly diminishes when transferring style between motions with different contents. This challenge lies in the lack of clear separation between content and style of a motion. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel motion style transformer that effectively disentangles style from content and generates a plausible motion with transferred style from a source motion. Our distinctive approach to achieving the goal of disentanglement is twofold: (1) a new architecture for motion style transformer with `part-attentive style modulator across body parts' and `Siamese encoders that encode style and content features separately'; (2) style disentanglement loss. Our method outperforms existing methods and demonstrates exceptionally high quality, particularly in motion pairs with different contents, without the need for heuristic post-processing. Gaussian Mixture Proposals with Pull-Push Learning Scheme to Capture Diverse Events for Weakly Supervised Temporal Video Grounding

In the weakly supervised temporal video grounding study, previous methods use predetermined single Gaussian proposals which lack the ability to express diverse events described by the sentence query. To enhance the expression ability of a proposal, we propose a Gaussian mixture proposal (GMP) that can depict arbitrary shapes by learning importance, centroid, and range of every Gaussian in the mixture. In learning GMP, each Gaussian is not trained in a feature space but is implemented over a temporal location. Thus the conventional feature-based learning for Gaussian mixture model is not valid for our case. In our special setting, to learn moderately coupled Gaussian mixture capturing diverse events, we newly propose a pull-push learning scheme using pulling and pushing losses, each of which plays an opposite role to the other. The effects of components in our scheme are verified in-depth with extensive ablation studies and the overall scheme achieves state-of-the-art performance. Balanced Energy Regularization Loss for Out-of-distribution Detection

In the field of out-of-distribution (OOD) detection, a previous method that use auxiliary data as OOD data has shown promising performance. However, the method provides an equal loss to all auxiliary data to differentiate them from inliers. However, based on our observation, in various tasks, there is a general imbalance in the distribution of the auxiliary OOD data across classes. We propose a balanced energy regularization loss that is simple but generally effective for a variety of tasks. Our balanced energy regularization loss utilizes class-wise different prior probabilities for auxiliary data to address the class imbalance in OOD data. The main concept is to regularize auxiliary samples from majority classes, more heavily than those from minority classes. Our approach performs better for OOD detection in semantic segmentation, long-tailed image classification, and image classification than the prior energy regularization loss. Furthermore, our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in two tasks: OOD detection in semantic segmentation and long-tailed image classification. Confidence-Based Feature Imputation for Graphs with Partially Known Features

This paper investigates a missing feature imputation problem for graph learning tasks. Several methods have previously addressed learning tasks on graphs with missing features. However, in cases of high rates of missing features, they were unable to avoid significant performance degradation. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a novel concept of channel-wise confidence in a node feature, which is assigned to each imputed channel feature of a node for reflecting certainty of the imputation. We then design pseudo-confidence using the channel-wise shortest path distance between a missing-feature node and its nearest known-feature node to replace unavailable true confidence in an actual learning process. Based on the pseudo-confidence, we propose a novel feature imputation scheme that performs channel-wise inter-node diffusion and node-wise inter-channel propagation. The scheme can endure even at an exceedingly high missing rate (e.g., 99.5\%) and it achieves state-of-the-art accuracy for both semi-supervised node classification and link prediction on various datasets containing a high rate of missing features. Influential Rank: A New Perspective of Post-training for Robust Model against Noisy Labels

Deep neural network can easily overfit to even noisy labels due to its high capacity, which degrades the generalization performance of a model. To overcome this issue, we propose a new approach for learning from noisy labels (LNL) via post-training, which can significantly improve the generalization performance of any pre-trained model on noisy label data. To this end, we rather exploit the overfitting property of a trained model to identify mislabeled samples. Specifically, our post-training approach gradually removes samples with high influence on the decision boundary and refines the decision boundary to improve generalization performance. Our post-training approach creates great synergies when combined with the existing LNL methods. Experimental results on various real-world and synthetic benchmark datasets demonstrate the validity of our approach in diverse realistic scenarios.

Audio Bank: A High-Level Acoustic Signal Representation for Audio Event Recognition

Automatic audio event recognition plays a pivotal role in making human robot interaction more closer and has a wide applicability in industrial automation, control and surveillance systems. Audio event is composed of intricate phonic patterns which are harmonically entangled. Audio recognition is dominated by low and mid-level features, which have demonstrated their recognition capability but they have high computational cost and low semantic meaning. In this paper, we propose a new computationally efficient framework for audio recognition. Audio Bank, a new high-level representation of audio, is comprised of distinctive audio detectors representing each audio class in frequency-temporal space. Dimensionality of the resulting feature vector is reduced using non-negative matrix factorization preserving its discriminability and rich semantic information. The high audio recognition performance using several classifiers (SVM, neural network, Gaussian process classification and k-nearest neighbors) shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Font Representation Learning via Paired-glyph Matching

Fonts can convey profound meanings of words in various forms of glyphs. Without typography knowledge, manually selecting an appropriate font or designing a new font is a tedious and painful task. To allow users to explore vast font styles and create new font styles, font retrieval and font style transfer methods have been proposed. These tasks increase the need for learning high-quality font representations. Therefore, we propose a novel font representation learning scheme to embed font styles into the latent space. For the discriminative representation of a font from others, we propose a paired-glyph matching-based font representation learning model that attracts the representations of glyphs in the same font to one another, but pushes away those of other fonts. Through evaluations on font retrieval with query glyphs on new fonts, we show our font representation learning scheme achieves better generalization performance than the existing font representation learning techniques. Finally on the downstream font style transfer and generation tasks, we confirm the benefits of transfer learning with the proposed method. Meta-node: A Concise Approach to Effectively Learn Complex Relationships in Heterogeneous Graphs

Existing message passing neural networks for heterogeneous graphs rely on the concepts of meta-paths or meta-graphs due to the intrinsic nature of heterogeneous graphs. However, the meta-paths and meta-graphs need to be pre-configured before learning and are highly dependent on expert knowledge to construct them. To tackle this challenge, we propose a novel concept of meta-node for message passing that can learn enriched relational knowledge from complex heterogeneous graphs without any meta-paths and meta-graphs by explicitly modeling the relations among the same type of nodes. Unlike meta-paths and meta-graphs, meta-nodes do not require any pre-processing steps that require expert knowledge. Going one step further, we propose a meta-node message passing scheme and apply our method to a contrastive learning model. In the experiments on node clustering and classification tasks, the proposed meta-node message passing method outperforms state-of-the-arts that depend on meta-paths. Our results demonstrate that effective heterogeneous graph learning is possible without the need for meta-paths that are frequently used in this field.

Global-local Motion Transformer for Unsupervised Skeleton-based Action Learning

We propose a new transformer model for the task of unsupervised learning of skeleton motion sequences. The existing transformer model utilized for unsupervised skeleton-based action learning is learned the instantaneous velocity of each joint from adjacent frames without global motion information. Thus, the model has difficulties in learning the attention globally over whole-body motions and temporally distant joints. In addition, person-to-person interactions have not been considered in the model. To tackle the learning of whole-body motion, long-range temporal dynamics, and person-to-person interactions, we design a global and local attention mechanism, where, global body motions and local joint motions pay attention to each other. In addition, we propose a novel pretraining strategy, multi-interval pose displacement prediction, to learn both global and local attention in diverse time ranges. The proposed model successfully learns local dynamics of the joints and captures global context from the motion sequences. Our model outperforms state-of-the-art models by notable margins in the representative benchmarks. Codes are available at https://github.com/Boeun-Kim/GL-Transformer.

Position-aware Location Regression Network for Temporal Video Grounding

The key to successful grounding for video surveillance is to understand a semantic phrase corresponding to important actors and objects. Conventional methods ignore comprehensive contexts for the phrase or require heavy computation for multiple phrases. To understand comprehensive contexts with only one semantic phrase, we propose Position-aware Location Regression Network (PLRN) which exploits position-aware features of a query and a video. Specifically, PLRN first encodes both the video and query using positional information of words and video segments. Then, a semantic phrase feature is extracted from an encoded query with attention. The semantic phrase feature and encoded video are merged and made into a context-aware feature by reflecting local and global contexts. Finally, PLRN predicts start, end, center, and width values of a grounding boundary. Our experiments show that PLRN achieves competitive performance over existing methods with less computation time and memory.

The Majority Can Help The Minority: Context-rich Minority Oversampling for Long-tailed Classification

The problem of class imbalanced data is that the generalization performance of the classifier deteriorates due to the lack of data from minority classes. In this paper, we propose a novel minority over-sampling method to augment diversified minority samples by leveraging the rich context of the majority classes as background images. To diversify the minority samples, our key idea is to paste an image from a minority class onto rich-context images from a majority class, using them as background images. Our method is simple and can be easily combined with the existing long-tailed recognition methods. We empirically prove the effectiveness of the proposed oversampling method through extensive experiments and ablation studies. Without any architectural changes or complex algorithms, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on various long-tailed classification benchmarks. Pose-MUM : Reinforcing Key Points Relationship for Semi-Supervised Human Pose Estimation

A well-designed strong-weak augmentation strategy and the stable teacher to generate reliable pseudo labels are essential in the teacher-student framework of semi-supervised learning (SSL). Considering these in mind, to suit the semi-supervised human pose estimation (SSHPE) task, we propose a novel approach referred to as Pose-MUM that modifies Mix/UnMix (MUM) augmentation. Like MUM in the dense prediction task, the proposed Pose-MUM makes strong-weak augmentation for pose estimation and leads the network to learn the relationship between each human key point much better than the conventional methods by adding the mixing process in intermediate layers in a stochastic manner. In addition, we employ the exponential-moving-average-normalization (EMAN) teacher, which is stable and well-suited to the SSL framework and furthermore boosts the performance. Extensive experiments on MS-COCO dataset show the superiority of our proposed method by consistently improving the performance over the previous methods following SSHPE benchmark.

Influence-Balanced Loss for Imbalanced Visual Classification

In this paper, we propose a balancing training method to address problems in imbalanced data learning. To this end, we derive a new loss used in the balancing training phase that alleviates the influence of samples that cause an overfitted decision boundary. The proposed loss efficiently improves the performance of any type of imbalance learning methods. In experiments on multiple benchmark data sets, we demonstrate the validity of our method and reveal that the proposed loss outperforms the state-of-the-art cost-sensitive loss methods. Furthermore, since our loss is not restricted to a specific task, model, or training method, it can be easily used in combination with other recent re-sampling, meta-learning, and cost-sensitive learning methods for class-imbalance problems.

Unsupervised Hyperbolic Representation Learning via Message Passing Auto-Encoders

Most of the existing literature regarding hyperbolic embedding concentrate upon supervised learning, whereas the use of unsupervised hyperbolic embedding is less well explored. In this paper, we analyze how unsupervised tasks can benefit from learned representations in hyperbolic space. To explore how well the hierarchical structure of unlabeled data can be represented in hyperbolic spaces, we design a novel hyperbolic message passing auto-encoder whose overall auto-encoding is performed in hyperbolic space. The proposed model conducts auto-encoding the networks via fully utilizing hyperbolic geometry in message passing. Through extensive quantitative and qualitative analyses, we validate the properties and benefits of the unsupervised hyperbolic representations. Codes are available at https://github.com/junhocho/HGCAE.
