On a New Approach for Constructing Wormholes in Einstein-Born-Infeld Gravity

We study a new approach for the wormhole construction in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity, which does not require exotic matters in the Einstein equation. The Born-Infeld field equation is not modified from "coordinate independent" conditions of continuous metric tensor and its derivatives, even though the Born-Infeld fields have discontinuities in their derivatives at the throat in general. We study the relation of the newly introduced conditions with the usual continuity equation for the energy-momentum tensor and the gravitational Bianchi identity. We find that there is no violation of energy conditions for the Born-Infeld fields contrary to the usual approaches. The exoticity of energy-momentum tensor is not essential for sustaining wormholes. Some open problems are discussed.

Analysis of the Packet Loss Probability in Energy Harvesting Cognitive Radio Networks

A Markovian battery model is proposed to provide the variation of energy states for energy harvesting (EH) secondary users (SUs) in the EH cognitive radio networks (CRN). Based on the proposed battery model, we derive the packet loss probability in the EH SUs due to sensing inaccuracy and energy outage. With the proposed analysis, the packet loss probability can easily be predicted and utilized to optimize the transmission policy (i.e., opportunities for successful transmission and EH) of EH SUs to improve their throughput. Especially, the proposed method can be applied to upper layer (scheduling and routing) optimization. To this end, we validate the proposed analysis through Monte-Carlo simulation and show an agreement between the analysis and simulations results.

Evaluation of the clinical usefulness of modulated Arc treatment

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of modulated arc (mARC) treatment techniques. The mARC treatment plans of the non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients were performed in order to verify the clinical usefulness of mARC. A pre study was conducted to find the most competent plan condition of mARC treatment and the usefulness of mARC treatment plan was evaluated by comparing it with the other Arc treatment plans such as Tomotherapy and RapidArc. In the case of mARC, the optimal condition for the mARC plan was determined by comparing the dosimetric performance of the mARC plans with the use of various parameters. The various parameters includes the photon energies (6 MV, 10 MV), optimization point angle (6°-10° intervals), and total segment number (36-59 segment). The best dosimetric performance of mARC was observed at 10 MV photon energy and the point angle 6 degree, and 59 segments. The each treatment plans of three different techniques were compared with the following parameters: conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI), target coverage, dose in the OARs, monitor units (MU), beam on time and the normal tissue complication probability (NTCP). As a result, all three different treatment techniques show the similar target coverage. The mARC results the lowest V20 and MU per fraction compared with both RapidArc and Tomotherapy plan. The mARC plan reduces the beam on time as well. Therefore, the results of this study provided a satisfactory result which mARC technique is considered as a useful clinical technique for radiation treatment.

Light bending in radiation background

We consider the velocity shift of light in presence of radiation emitted by a black body. Within geometric optics formalism we calculate the bending angle of a light ray when there is a gradient in the energy density. We model the bending for two simplified cases. The bending angle is proportional to the inverse square power of the impact parameter ($\propto 1/b^2$) when the dilution of energy density is spherically symmetric. The bending angle is inversely proportional to the impact parameter ($\propto 1/b$) when the energy density dilutes cylindrically. Assuming that a neutron star is an isothermal black body, we estimate the order of magnitude for such bending angle and compare it with the bending angle by magnetic field.

Bending of electromagnetic wave in an ultra-strong magnetic field

We consider the bending of light by nonlinear electrodynamics when the magnetic field $B$ exceeds the critical value $B_{\rm c}$. Using the index of refraction derived from the analytic series representation in one-loop effective action of QED, we found the trajectory and the bending angle of light in geometric optics. The angle bent by ultra-strong magnetic field of magnetar was estimated and compared with the gravitational bending. The result may be useful in studying the lensing, birefringence, and other nonlinear quantum electrodynamic effects above $B_{\rm c}$.

Light bending by nonlinear electrodynamics under strong electric and magnetic field

We calculate the bending angles of light under the strong electric and magnetic fields by a charged black hole and a magnetized neutron star according to the nonlinear electrodynamics of Euler-Heisenberg interaction. The bending angle of light by the electric field of charged black hole is computed from geometric optics and a general formula is derived for light bending valid for any orientation of the magnetic dipole. The astronomical significance of the light bending by magnetic field of a neutron star is discussed.

Stabilizing radion and dilaton with brane gas and flux

We consider the dynamics of moduli fields in brane gas cosmology. By calculating the effective potentials from brane gas and bulk RR field, we found an attractor behavior that can fix both the radion and the dilaton. The potentials for radion and dilaton show global minima that can provide the stabilizing forces so that they can be stabilized dynamically. The effective potential for the three-dimensional volume is runaway-type so that it can inflate.

Radion effective potential in brane gas cosmology

We consider a cosmological solution which can explain anisotropic evolution of spatial dimensions and the stabilization of extra dimensions in brane gas formalism. We evaluate the effective potentials, induced by brane gas, bulk flux and supergravity particles, which govern the sizes of the observed three and the extra dimensions. It is possible that the wrapped internal volume can oscillate between two turning points or sit at the minimum of the potential while the unwrapped three dimensional volume can expand monotonically. Including the supergravity particles makes the effective potential steeper as the internal volume shrinks.

Stabilization of the Extra Dimensions in Brane Gas Cosmology with Bulk Flux

We consider the anisotropic evolution of spatial dimensions and the stabilization of internal dimensions in the framework of brane gas cosmology. We observe that the bulk RR field can give an effective potential which prevents the internal subvolume from collapsing. For a combination of $(D-3)$-brane gas wrapping the extra dimensions and 4-form RR flux in the unwrapped dimensions, it is possible that the wrapped subvolume has an oscillating solution around the minimum of the effective potential while the unwrapped subvolume expands monotonically. The flux gives a logarithmic bounce to the effective potential of the internal dimensions.

Mirage cosmology with an unstable probe D3-brane

We consider the mirage cosmology by an unstable probe brane whose action is represented by BDI action with tachyon. We study how the presence of tachyon affects the evolution of the brane inflation. At the early stage of the brane inflation, the tachyon kinetic term can play an important role in curing the superluminal expansion in mirage cosmology.

Late time evolution of brane gas cosmology and compact internal dimensions

We study the late-time behavior of a universe in the framework of brane gas cosmology. We investigate the evolution of a universe with a gas of supergravity particles and a gas of branes. Considering the case when different dimensions are anisotropically wrapped by various branes, we have derived Friedman-like equations governing the dynamics of wrapped and unwrapped subvolumes. We point out that the compact internal dimensions are wrapped by three or higher dimensional branes.

Brane-Bulk Interaction and Holographic Principle

We introduce the brane-bulk interaction to discuss a limitation of the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula which is useful for the holographic description of brane cosmology. In the presence of the brane-bulk interaction, we cannot find the entropy representation of the first Friedmann equation (the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula). In the absence of the interaction, the cosmological Cardy-Verlinde formula is established even for the time-dependent charged AdS background. Hence, if there exists a dynamic exchange of energy between the brane and the bulk (that is, if $\tilde T^t~_y \not=0$), we cannot achieve the cosmological holographic principle on the brane.

Classical stability of stringy wormholes in flat and AdS spaces

We study small fluctuations of the stringy wormhole solutions of graviton-dilaton-axion system in arbitrary dimensions. We show under O($d$)-symmetric harmonic perturbation that the Euclidean wormhole solutions are unstable in flat space irrespective of dimensions and in anti de Sitter space of $d=3$.

Mirage Cosmology in M-theory

We extend the idea of mirage cosmology to M-theory. Considering the motion of a probe brane in the M-theory background generated by a stack of non-threshold (M2,M5) bound states, we study the cosmological evolution of the brane universe in this background. We estimate the range of $r$ where the formalism is valid. Effective energy density on the probe brane is obtained in terms of the scale factor. Comparing the limiting case of the result with that from type IIB background, we confirm that the cosmological evolution by mirage matter is a possible scenario in the M-theory context.

Stability and fluctuation modes of giant gravitons with NSNS B field

We study the stability of the giant gravitons in the string theory background with NSNS B field. We consider the perturbation of giant gravitons formed by a probe D$(8-p)$ brane in the background generated by D$(p-2)$-D$(p)$ branes for $2 \le p \le 5$. We use the quadratic approximation to the brane action to find the equations of motion. For $p=5$, giant graviton configurations are stable independent of the size of the brane. For $p \ne 5$, we calculated the range of the size of the brane where they are stable. We also present the mode frequencies explicitly for some special cases.

Vibration modes of giant gravitons in the background of dilatonic D-branes

We consider the perturbation of giant gravitons in the background of dilatonic D-branes whose geometry is not of a conventional form of ${\rm AdS}_m \times {\rm S}^n$. We use the quadratic approximation to the brane action to investigate their vibrations around the equilibrium configuration. We found the normal modes of small vibrations of giant gravitons and these vibrations are turned out to be stable.

Brane inflation in tachyonic and non-tachyonic type 0B string theories

We consider the motion of the brane universe moving in a background bulk space of tachyonic and non-tachyonic type 0B string theory. The effective densities are calculated for both cases and they show different power law behavior. Brane inflation for non-tachyonic type 0B background has the same power law behavior as that for type IIB background. The brane inflation under tachyonic background is less divergent than the one without tachyon. The role of tachyonic field in brane inflation scenario is different from that of the ordinary matter field.
