Analysis of the SDFEM in a modified streamline diffusion norm for singularly perturbed convection diffusion problems

In this paper we consider a model singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem which is solved by a streamline diffusion finite element method (SDFEM) on a Shishkin rectangular mesh. To put insight into the influences of stabilization parameters on SDFEM's solutions, we discuss how to obtain the uniform estimates in the streamline diffusion norm which have not been analyzed up to now. By decreasing the standard stabilization parameters properly near the exponential layers, we obtain the uniform estimates in a norm, which is stronger than the $\varepsilon-$energy norm and weaker than the standard streamline diffusion norm. Numerical experiments show that the presented stabilization parameters provide enough stability for the numerical schemes and yield same accurate solutions as the standard ones.

Direct Evidence of Metallic Bands in a Monolayer Boron Sheet

The search for metallic boron allotropes has attracted great attention in the past decades and recent theoretical works predict the existence of metallicity in monolayer boron. Here, we synthesize the \b{eta}12-sheet monolayer boron on a Ag(111) surface and confirm the presence of metallic boron-derived bands using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The Fermi surface is composed of one electron pocket at the S point and a pair of hole pockets near the X point, which is supported by the first-principles calculations. The metallic boron allotrope in \b{eta}12 sheet opens the way to novel physics and chemistry in material science.

Similarity of Jet Radiation between Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars and GeV Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 Galaxies: A Universal $δ$-$L_{\rm c}$ Correlation

By modeling the broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of a typical flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ, 3C 279) and two GeV narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s, PMN J0948+0022 and 1H 0323+342) in different flux stages with the one-zone leptonic models, we find a universal correlation between their Doppler factors ($δ$) and peak luminosities ($L_{\rm c}$) of external Compton scattering bumps. Compiling a combined sample of FSRQs and GeV NLS1s, it is found that both FSRQs and GeV NLS1s in different stages and in different sources well follow the same $δ$-$L_{\rm c}$ correlation. This indicates that the variations of observed luminosities may be essentially due to the Doppler boosting effect. And the universal $δ$-$L_{\rm c}$ relation between FSRQs and GeV NLS1s in different stages may be further evidence that the particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms for the two kinds of sources are similar. In addition, by replacing $L_{\rm c}$ with the observed luminosity in the Fermi/LAT band ($L_{\rm LAT}$), this correlation holds, and it may serve as an empirical indicator of $δ$. We estimate the $δ$ values with $L_{\rm LAT}$ for 484 FSRQs in the Fermi/LAT Catalog and they range from 3 to 41, with a median of 16, which are statistically consistent with the values derived by other methods.

Magnetic Dirac Fermions and Chern Insulator Supported on Pristine Silicon Surface

Emergence of ferromagnetism in non-magnetic semiconductors is strongly desirable, especially in topological materials thanks to the possibility to achieve quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on first-principles calculations, we propose that for Si thin film grown on metal substrate, the pristine Si(111)-root3xroot3 surface with a spontaneous weak reconstruction has a strong tendency of ferromagnetism and nontrivial topological properties, characterized by spin polarized Dirac-fermion surface states. In contrast to conventional routes relying on introduction of alien charge carriers or specially patterned substrates, the spontaneous magnetic order and spin-orbit coupling on the pristine silicon surface together gives rise to quantized anomalous Hall effect with a finite Chern number C=-1. This work suggests exciting opportunities in silicon-based spintronics and quantum computing free from alien dopants or proximity effects.

Supercloseness of the SDFEM on Shishkin triangular meshes for problems with exponential layers

In this paper, we analyze the supercloseness property of the streamline diffusion finite element method (SDFEM) on Shishkin triangular meshes, which is different from one in the case of rectangular meshes. The analysis depends on integral inequalities for the part related to the diffusion in the bilinear form. Moreover, our result allows the construction of a simple postprocessing that yields a more accurate solution. Finally, numerical experiments support these theoretical results.

Experimental quantum coding against photon loss error

A significant obstacle for practical quantum computation is the loss of physical qubits in quantum computers, a decoherence mechanism most notably in optical systems. Here we experimentally demonstrate, both in the quantum circuit model and in the one-way quantum computer model, the smallest non-trivial quantum codes to tackle this problem. In the experiment, we encode single-qubit input states into highly-entangled multiparticle codewords, and we test their ability to protect encoded quantum information from detected one-qubit loss error. Our results prove the in-principle feasibility of overcoming the qubit loss error by quantum codes.

Prediction of a new ground state of superhard compound B6O at ambient conditions

Boron suboxide B6O, the hardest known oxide, has an R-3m crystal structure (α-B6O) that can be described as an oxygen-intercalated structure of α-boron, or, equivalently, as a cubic close packing of B12 icosahedra with two oxygen atoms occupying all octahedral voids in it. Here we show a new ground state of this compound at ambient conditions, Cmcm-B6O (\b{eta}-B6O), which in all quantum-mechanical treatments that we tested (GGA, LDA, and hybrid functional HSE06) comes out to be slightly but consistently more stable. Increasing pressure and temperature further stabilize it with respect to the known α-B6O structure. \b{eta}-B6O also has a slightly higher hardness and may be synthesized using different experimental protocols. We suggest that \b{eta}-B6O is present in mixture with α-B6O, and its presence accounts for previously unexplained bands in the experimental Raman spectrum.

Analysis of SDFEM on Shishkin triangular meshes and hybrid meshes for problems with characteristic layers

In this paper, we analyze the streamline diffusion finite element method (SDFEM) for a model singularly perturbed convection-diffusion equation on a Shishkin triangular mesh and hybrid meshes. Supercloseness property of $u^I-u^N$ is obtained, where $u^I$ is the interpolant of the solution $u$ and $u^N$ is the SDFEM's solution. The analysis depends on novel integral inequalities for the diffusion and convection parts in the bilinear form. Furthermore, analysis on hybrid meshes shows that bilinear elements should be recommended for the exponential layer, not for the characteristic layer. Finally, numerical experiments support these theoretical results.

Experimental Realization of Two-Dimensional Boron Sheets

Boron is the fifth element in the periodic table and possesses rich chemistry second only to carbon. A striking feature of boron is that B12 icosahedral cages occur as the building blocks in bulk boron and many boron compounds. This is in contrast to its neighboring element, carbon, which prefers 2D layered structure (graphite) in its bulk form. On the other hand, boron clusters of medium size have been predicted to be planar or quasi-planar, such as B12+ , B13+, B19-, B36, and so on. This is also in contrast to carbon clusters which exhibit various cage structures (fullerenes). Therefore, boron and carbon can be viewed as a set of complementary chemical systems in their bulk and cluster structures. Now, with the boom of graphene, an intriguing question is that whether boron can also form a monoatomic-layer 2D sheet structure? Here, we report the first successful experimental realization of 2D boron sheets. We have revealed two types of boron sheet structures, corresponding to a triangular boron lattice with different arrangements of the hexagonal holes. Moreover, our boron sheets were found to be relatively stable against oxidization, and interacts only weekly with the substrate. The realization of such a long expected 2D boron sheet could open a door toward boron electronics, in analogous to the carbon electronics based on graphene.

Effective action for the Abelian-Higgs model for a gauge-invariant implementation on optical lattices

We present a gauge-invariant effective action for the Abelian-Higgs model in 1+1 dimensions. It is constructed by integrating out the gauge field and then using the hopping parameter expansion. The latter is tested with Monte Carlo simulations for small values of the scalar self-coupling. In the opposite limit, at infinitely large self-coupling, the Higgs mode is frozen and the partition function can be written in terms of local tensors and the tensor renormalization group blocking can be applied. The numerical implementation requires truncations and the time continuum limit of the blocked transfer matrix can be obtained numerically. At zero gauge coupling and with a spin-1 truncation, the small volume energy spectrum is identical to the low energy spectrum of a two-species Bose-Hubbard model in the limit of large onsite repulsion. The procedure is extended to finite gauge coupling and we derive a spin-1 approximation of the Hamiltonian which involves terms corresponding to transitions among the two species in the Bose-Hubbard model. An optical lattice implementation involving a ladder structure is proposed.

Phosphorene and Doped Monolayers Interfaced TiO$_2$ with Type-II Band Alignments: Novel Excitonic Solar Cells

Phosphorene, a new elemental two dimensional (2D) material recently isolated by mechanical exfoliation, holds the feature of a direct band gap of around 2.0 eV, overcoming graphene's weaknesses (zero band gap) to realize the potential application in optoelectronic devices. Constructing van der Waals heterostructures is an efficient approach to modulate the band structure, to advance the charge separation efficiency, and thus to optimize the optoelectronic properties. Here, we theoretically investigated three type-II heterostructures based on perfect phosphorene and its doped monolayers interfaced with TiO$_2$(110) surface. Doping in phosphorene has a tunability on built-in potential, charge transfer, light absorbance, as well as electron dynamics, which helps to optimize the light absorption efficiency. Three excitonic solar cells (XSCs) based on the phosphorene$-$TiO$_2$ heterojunctions have been proposed, which exhibit high power conversion efficiencies dozens of times higher than conventional solar cells, comparable to MoS$_2$/WS$_2$ XSC. The nonadiabatic molecular dynamics within the time-dependent density functional theory framework shows ultrafast electron transfer time of 6.1$-$10.8 fs, and slow electron$-$hole recombination of 0.58$-$1.08 ps, yielding $>98\%$ quantum efficiency for charge separation, further guaranteeing the practical power conversion efficiencies in XSC.

A Tight $L_{\rm p, iso}-E'_{\rm p}-Γ_0$ Correlation of Gamma-Ray Bursts

We select a sample of 34 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) whose $Γ_0$ values are derived with the onset peaks observed in the afterglow lightcurves (except for GRB 060218 whose $Γ_0$ is estimated with its radio data), and investigate the correlations among $Γ_0$, the isotropic peak luminosity ($L_{\rm iso}$), and the peak energy ($E_{\rm p,z}$) of the $νf_ν$ spectrum in the cosmological rest frame. An analysis of pair correlations among these observables well confirms the results reported by the previous papers. More interestingly, a tight correlation among $L_{\rm iso}$, $E_{\rm p,z}$, and $Γ_0$ is found from a multiple regression analysis, which takes the form of $L_{\rm iso} \propto E_{\rm p,z}^{1.34\pm 0.14} Γ_0^{1.32\pm 0.19}$ or $E_{\rm p,z} \propto L_{\rm iso}^{0.55\pm 0.06}Γ_0^{-0.50\pm 0.17}$. Nine other GRBs whose $Γ_0$ are derived via the pair production opacity constraint also follow such a correlation. Excluding GRB 060218, the $L_{\rm iso}-E_{\rm p,z}-Γ_0$ correlation is valid, and it even holds in the jet co-moving frame. However, GRB 060218 deviates the $L^{'}_{\rm iso}-E^{'}_{\rm p}$ relation of typical GRBs in the jet co-moving frame with $3σ$. We argue that the $L_{\rm iso} - E_{\rm p, z} - Γ_0$ correlation may be more physical than the $L_{\rm iso} - E_{\rm p,z}$ correlation, since physically the relationship between the observed $L_{\rm iso}$ and $E_{\rm p,z}$ not only depends on radiation physics, but also depends on the bulk motion of the jet. We explore the possible origins of this correlation and discuss its physical implications for understanding GRB jet composition and radiation mechanism.

Mechanism and modulation of terahertz generation from a semimetal - graphite

Semi-metals might offer a stronger interaction and a better confinement for terahertz wave than semiconductors, while preserve tunability. Particularly, graphene-based materials are envisioned as terahertz modulators, filters and ultra-broadband sources. However, the understanding of terahertz generation from those materials is still not clear, thus limits us recognizing the potential and improving device performances. Graphite, the mother material of graphene and a typical bulk semi-metal, is a good system to study semi-metals and graphene-based materials. Here we experimentally modulate and maximize the terahertz signal from graphite surface, thus reveal the mechanism - surface field driving photon induced carriers into transient current to radiate terahertz wave. We also discuss the differences between graphite and semiconductors; particularly graphite shows no temperature dependency from room temperature to 80C. Above knowledge will help us understand terahertz generations, achieve maximum output and electric modulation, in semi-metal or graphene based devices.

Identification of a New $γ$-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxy, at Redshift $\sim1$

We report on the identification of a new $γ$-ray-emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy, SDSS J122222.55+041315.7, which increases the number of known objects of this remarkable but rare type of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to seven. Its optical spectrum, obtained in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, reveals a broad H $β$ emission line with a width (FWHM) of 1734$\pm$104 km s$^{-1}$. This, along with strong optical Fe II multiplets [$R_{4570}=0.9$] and a weak [O III] $λ5007$ emission line, makes the object a typical NLS1. On the other hand, the source exhibits a high radio brightness temperature, rapid infrared variability, and a flat X-ray spectrum extending up to $\sim$200 keV. It is associated with a luminous $γ$-ray source detected significantly with {\it Fermi}/LAT. Correlated variability with other wavebands has not yet been tested. The spectral energy distribution can be well modelled by a one-zone leptonic jet model. This new member is by far the most distant $γ$-ray-emitting NLS1, at a redshift of $z=0.966$.

Pressure induced novel compounds in the Hf-O system from first-principles calculations

Using first-principles evolutionary simulations, we have systematically investigated phase stability in the Hf-O system at pressure up to 120 GPa. New compounds Hf5O2, Hf3O2, HfO and HfO3 are discovered to be thermodynamically stable at certain pressure ranges and a new stable high-pressure phase is found for Hf2O with space group Pnnm and anti-CaCl2-type structure. Both P62m-HfO and P4m2-Hf2O3 show semimetallic character. Pnnm-HfO3 shows interesting structure, simultaneously containing oxide O2- and peroxide [O-O]2- anions. Remarkably, it is P62m-HfO rather than OII-HfO2 that exhibits the highest mechanical characteristics among Hf-O compounds. Pnnm-Hf2O, Imm2-Hf5O2, P31m-Hf2O and P4m2-Hf2O3 phases also show superior mechanical properties, these phases can be quenched to ambient pressure and their properties can be exploited.

Preference Completion: Large-scale Collaborative Ranking from Pairwise Comparisons

In this paper we consider the collaborative ranking setting: a pool of users each provides a small number of pairwise preferences between $d$ possible items; from these we need to predict preferences of the users for items they have not yet seen. We do so by fitting a rank $r$ score matrix to the pairwise data, and provide two main contributions: (a) we show that an algorithm based on convex optimization provides good generalization guarantees once each user provides as few as $O(r\log^2 d)$ pairwise comparisons -- essentially matching the sample complexity required in the related matrix completion setting (which uses actual numerical as opposed to pairwise information), and (b) we develop a large-scale non-convex implementation, which we call AltSVM, that trains a factored form of the matrix via alternating minimization (which we show reduces to alternating SVM problems), and scales and parallelizes very well to large problem settings. It also outperforms common baselines on many moderately large popular collaborative filtering datasets in both NDCG and in other measures of ranking performance.

Correlations among Jet, Accretion Disk, and Broad Line Region of Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars

The SEDs of 18 GeV FSRQs are collected and compiled from literature, in which both the jet emission and the accretion disk radiation can be observed, in order to investigate the correlations among their jet power (P_jet), accretion disk luminosity (L_disk), and luminosity of broad line region (BLR, L_BLR). On the basis of the SED fits with the jet radiation and accretion disk radiation models, we calculate P_jet and L_disk. No correlation between P_jet with either L_disk or L_BLR is found. With a sub-sample of L_BLR for 13 GeV FSRQs, it is observed that L_BLR is strongly correlated with their L_disk. We also study the BLR covering factors of the GeV FSRQs in our sample, averagely which are smaller than that of the large samples of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars. P_jet of some GeV FSRQs is higher than L_disk, but P_jet of all the GeV FSRQs is lower than the accretion power of black hole (BH), which is estimated by \dot{M}c^2=L_disk/0.1, indicating that the total accretion power of BH is sufficient to drive the jets in these sources; however the uncorrelation between L_disk and P_jet of the GeV FSRQs may suggest that their jets are launched by the BZ process via extracting the rotational energy of BH. Using the L_BLR-L_disk relation of the GeV FSRQs, we estimate L_disk of a BL Lac sample with their L_BLR. A comparison of L_BLR and Eddington ratio (L_disk/L_Edd) among BL Lacs, very radio-loud NLS1 galaxies, and FSRQs is also presented. It is found that along with the BL Lac-NLS1-FSRQ sequence L_BLR and L_disk/L_Edd increase, which may correspond to the change of the accretion disk structure and the transformation of the dominant mechanism for jet launching. This is also consistent with the division of their parent populations, i.e., low-excitation radio galaxies and high-excitation radio galaxies.
