Can the energy bound $E \geq 0$ imply supersymmetry?

We utilize the integrality conjecture to show that the torus partition function of a fermionic rational conformal theory in the Ramond-Ramond sector becomes a constant when the bound $h^R \ge \frac{c}{24}$ is satisfied, where $h^R$ denote the conformal weights of Ramond states and $c$ is the central charge. The constant-valued Ramond-Ramond partition function strongly suggests the presence of supersymmetry unless a given theory has free fermions. The lower bound $h^R \ge \frac{c}{24}$ can then be identified with the unitarity bound of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. We thus propose that, for rational CFTs without free fermions, $(h^R-c/24) \geq 0$ can imply supersymmetry.

Emergent Supersymmetry on the Edges

The WZW models describe the dynamics of the edge modes of Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions. We explore the WZW models which can be mapped to supersymmetric theories via the generalized Jordan-Wigner transformation. Some of such models have supersymmetric Ramond vacua, but the others break the supersymmetry spontaneously. We also make a comment on recent proposals that the Read-Rezayi states at filling fraction $ν=1/2,~2/3$ are able to support supersymmetry.

Bootstrapping Fermionic Rational CFTs with Three Characters

Recently, the modular linear differential equation (MLDE) for level-two congruence subgroups $Γ_θ, Γ^{0}(2)$ and $Γ_0(2)$ of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ was developed and used to classify the fermionic rational conformal field theories (RCFT). Two character solutions of the second-order fermionic MLDE without poles were found and their corresponding CFTs are identified. Here we extend this analysis to explore the landscape of three character fermionic RCFTs obtained from the third-order fermionic MLDE without poles. Especially, we focus on a class of the fermionic RCFTs whose Neveu-Schwarz sector vacuum character has no free-fermion currents and Ramond sector saturates the bound $h^{\text{R}} \ge \frac{c}{24}$, which is the unitarity bound for the supersymmetric case. Most of the solutions can be mapped to characters of the fermionized WZW models. We find the pairs of fermionic CFTs whose characters can be combined to produce $K(τ)$, the character of the $c=12$ fermionic CFT for $\text{Co}_0$ sporadic group.

Fermionic Rational Conformal Field Theories and Modular Linear Differential Equations

We define Modular Linear Differential Equations (MLDE) for the level-two congruence subgroups $Γ_\vartheta$, $Γ^0(2)$ and $Γ_0(2)$ of $\text{SL}_2(\mathbb Z)$. Each subgroup corresponds to one of the spin structures on the torus. The pole structures of the fermionic MLDEs are investigated by exploiting the valence formula for the level-two congruence subgroups. We focus on the first and second order holomorphic MLDEs without poles and use them to find a large class of `Fermionic Rational Conformal Field Theories', which have non-negative integer coefficients in the $q$-series expansion of their characters. We study the detailed properties of these fermionic RCFTs, some of which are supersymmetric. This work also provides a starting point for the classification of the fermionic Modular Tensor Category.

On the Spectrum of Pure Higher Spin Gravity

We study the spectrum of pure massless higher spin theories in $AdS_3$. The light spectrum is given by a tower of massless particles of spin $s=2,\cdots,N$ and their multi-particles states. Their contribution to the torus partition function organises into the vacuum character of the ${\cal W}_N$ algebra. Modular invariance puts constraints on the heavy spectrum of the theory, and in particular leads to negative norm states, which would be inconsistent with unitarity. This negativity can be cured by including additional light states, below the black hole threshold but whose mass grows with the central charge. We show that these states can be interpreted as conical defects with deficit angle $2π(1-1/M)$. Unitarity allows the inclusion of such defects into the path integral provided $M \geq N$.

Conformal Field Theories with Sporadic Group Symmetry

The monster sporadic group is the automorphism group of a central charge $c=24$ vertex operator algebra (VOA) or meromorphic conformal field theory (CFT). In addition to its $c=24$ stress tensor $T(z)$, this theory contains many other conformal vectors of smaller central charge; for example, it admits $48$ commuting $c=\frac12$ conformal vectors whose sum is $T(z)$. Such decompositions of the stress tensor allow one to construct new CFTs from the monster CFT in a manner analogous to the Goddard-Kent-Olive (GKO) coset method for affine Lie algebras. We use this procedure to produce evidence for the existence of a number of CFTs with sporadic symmetry groups and employ a variety of techniques, including Hecke operators, modular linear differential equations, and Rademacher sums, to compute the characters of these CFTs. Our examples include (extensions of) nine of the sporadic groups appearing as subquotients of the monster, as well as the simple groups ${}^2{E}_6(2)$ and ${F}_4(2)$ of Lie type. Many of these examples are naturally associated to McKay's $\widehat{E_8}$ correspondence, and we use the structure of Norton's monstralizer pairs more generally to organize our presentation.

Rademacher Expansions and the Spectrum of 2d CFT

A classical result from analytic number theory by Rademacher gives an exact formula for the Fourier coefficients of modular forms of non-positive weight. We apply similar techniques to study the spectrum of two-dimensional unitary conformal field theories, with no extended chiral algebra and $c>1$. By exploiting the full modular constraints of the partition function we propose an expression for the spectral density in terms of the light spectrum of the theory. The expression is given in terms of a Rademacher expansion, which converges for spin $j \neq 0$. For a finite number of light operators the expression agrees with a variant of the Poincare construction developed by Maloney, Witten and Keller. With this framework we study the presence of negative density of states in the partition function dual to pure gravity, and propose a scenario to cure this negativity.

Magnetically charged AdS5 black holes from class S theories on hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We study the twisted index of 4d $\mathcal{N}$ = 2 class S theories on a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold $M_3$. Via 6d picture, the index can be written in terms of topological invariants called analytic torsions twisted by irreducible flat connections on the 3-manifold. Using the topological expression, we determine the full perturbative 1/N expansion of the twisted index. The leading part nicely matches the Bekestein-Hawking entropy of a magnetically charged black hole in the holographic dual $AdS_5$ with $AdS_2\times M_3$ near-horizon.

Monster Anatomy

We investigate the two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) of $c=\frac{47}{2}$, $c=\frac{116}{5}$ and $c=23$ `dual' to the critical Ising model, the three state Potts model and the tensor product of two Ising models, respectively. We argue that these CFTs exhibit moonshines for the double covering of the baby Monster group, $2\cdot \mathbb{B}$, the triple covering of the largest Fischer group, $3\cdot \text{Fi}_{24}'$ and multiple-covering of the second largest Conway group, $2\cdot 2^{1+22} \cdot \text{Co}_2$. Various twined characters are shown to satisfy generalized bilinear relations involving Mckay-Thompson series. We also rediscover that the `self-dual' two-dimensional bosonic conformal field theory of $c=12$ has the Conway group $\text{Co}_{0}\simeq2\cdot\text{Co}_1$ as an automorphism group.

Modular Constraints on Superconformal Field Theories

We constrain the spectrum of $\mathcal{N}=(1, 1)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2, 2)$ superconformal field theories in two-dimensions by requiring the NS-NS sector partition function to be invariant under the $Γ_θ$ congruence subgroup of the full modular group $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$. We employ semi-definite programming to find constraints on the allowed spectrum of operators with or without $U(1)$ charges. Especially, the upper bounds on the twist gap for the non-current primaries exhibit interesting peaks, kinks, and plateau. We identify a number of candidate rational (S)CFTs realized at the numerical boundaries and find that they are realized as the solutions to modular differential equations associated to $Γ_θ$. Some of the candidate theories have been discussed by Höhn in the context of self-dual extremal vertex operator (super)algebra. We also obtain bounds for the charged operators and study their implications to the weak gravity conjecture in AdS$_3$.

Modular Constraints on Conformal Field Theories with Currents

We study constraints coming from the modular invariance of the partition function of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We constrain the spectrum of CFTs in the presence of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic currents using the semi-definite programming. In particular, we find the bounds on the twist gap for the non-current primaries depend dramatically on the presence of holomorphic currents, showing numerous kinks and peaks. Various rational CFTs are realized at the numerical boundary of the twist gap, saturating the upper limits on the degeneracies. Such theories include Wess-Zumino-Witten models for the Deligne's exceptional series, the Monster CFT and the Baby Monster CFT. We also study modular constraints imposed by $\mathcal{W}$-algebras of various type and observe that the bounds on the gap depend on the choice of $\mathcal{W}$-algebra in the small central charge region.

Exploring Free Matrix CFT Holographies at One-Loop

We extend our recent study on the duality between stringy higher spin theories and free CFTs in the $SU(N)$ adjoint representation to other matrix models namely the free $SO(N)$ and $Sp(N)$ adjoint models as well as the free $U(N)\times U(M)$ bi-fundamental and $O(N)\times O(M)$ bi-vector models. After determining the spectrum of the theories in the planar limit by Polya counting, we compute the one loop vacuum energy and Casimir energy for their respective bulk duals by means of the CIRZ method that we have introduced recently. We also elaborate on possible ambiguities in the application of this method.

One-Loop Free Energy of Tensionless Type IIB String in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$

Considering the zero 't Hooft coupling limit of ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory, the exact spectrum of all single-trace operators can be accessed in terms of the underlying $so(2,4)$ character. This makes it possible in turn to compute the one-loop free energy of the tensionless type IIB string theory in AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background, with help of the recently developed method of character integral representation of zeta function (CIRZ). We calculate first the one-loop free energy of the string states in the $(p-1)$-th Regge trajectory and find the result to be $p$ times the free energy of a single ${\cal N}=4$ Maxwell multiplet. The full one-loop free energy is hence proportional to the divergent series $\sum_{p=2}^\infty p\,$. The divergence arises as a result of interrupting the regularization procedure in an intermediate stage. With a reorganization of states, we extract the finite part of free energy after summing over the Regge trajectories. This way gives us a finite result which is minus of the free energy of the ${\cal N}=4$ multiplet. Hence, this bulk one-loop result matches the -1 term in the $N^2-1$ factor of the boundary result.

A Note on Vectorial AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ Duality for Spin-$j$ Boundary Theory

The vectorial holographic correspondences between higher-spin theories in AdS$_5$ and free vector models on the boundary are extended to the cases where the latter is described by free massless spin-$j$ field. The dual higher-spin theory in the bulk does not include gravity and can only be defined on rigid AdS$_5$ background with $S^4$ boundary. We discuss various properties of these rather special higher-spin theories and calculate their one-loop free energies. We show that the result is proportional to the same quantity for spin-$j$ doubleton treated as if it is a AdS$_5$ field. Finally, we consider even more special case where the boundary theory itself is given by an infinite tower of massless higher-spin fields.

3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal SCFTs from Wrapped M5-branes

We study CFT data of 3-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) arising from wrapped two M5-branes on closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Via so-called 3d/3d correspondence, central charges of these SCFTs are related to a $SL(2)$ Chern-Simons (CS) invariant on the 3-manifolds. We give a rigorous definition of the invariant in terms of resurgence theory and a state-integral model for the complex CS theory. We numerically evaluate the central charges for several closed 3-manifolds with small hyperbolic volume. The computation suggests that the wrapped M5-brane systems give infinitely many discrete SCFTs with small central charges. We also analyze these `minimal' SCFTs in the eye of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal bootstrap.

Bootstrapping Pure Quantum Gravity in AdS3

The three-dimensional pure quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant is supposed to be dual to the extremal conformal field theory of central charge $c=24k$ in two dimensions. We employ the conformal bootstrap method to analyze the extremal CFTs, and find numerical evidence for the non-existence of the extremal CFTs for sufficiently large central charge ($k \ge 20$). We also explore near-extremal CFTs, a small modification of extremal ones, and find similar evidence for their non-existence for large central charge. This indicates, under the assumption of holomorphic factorization, the pure gravity in the weakly curved AdS$_3$ do not exist as a consistent quantum theory.

On the Holography of Free Yang-Mills

We study the AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ duality where the boundary CFT is free Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(N). At the planar level we use the spectrum and correlation functions of the boundary theory to explicate features of the bulk theory. Further, by computing the one-loop partition function of the bulk theory using the methods of arXiv:1603.05387, we argue that the bulk coupling constant should be shifted to $N^2$ from $N^2-1$. Similar conclusions are reached by studying the dualities in thermal AdS$_5$ with $S^1\times S^3$ boundary.

One-loop Test of Free SU(N) Adjoint Model Holography

We consider the holographic duality where the CFT side is given by $SU(N)$ adjoint free scalar field theory. Compared to the vector models, the set of single trace operators is immensely extended so that the corresponding AdS theory also contains infinitely many massive higher spin fields on top of the massless ones. We compute the one-loop vacuum energy of these AdS fields to test this duality at the subleading order in large $N$ expansion. The determination of the bulk vacuum energy requires a proper scheme to sum up the infinitely many contributions. For that, we develop a new method and apply it first to calculate the vacuum energies for the first few `Regge trajectories' in AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$. In considering the full vacuum energy of AdS theory dual to a matrix model CFT, we find that there exist more than one available prescriptions for the one-loop vacuum energy. Taking a particular prescription, we determine the full vacuum energy of the AdS$_5$ theory, whereas the AdS$_4$ calculation still remains technically prohibitive. This result shows that the full vacuum energy of the AdS$_5$ theory coincides with minus of the free energy of a single scalar field on the boundary. This is analogous to the $O(N)$ vector model case, hence suggests an interpretation of the \emph{positive} shift of the bulk coupling constant, i.e. from $N^2-1$ to $N^2$.
