Substructure grooming of inclusive and photon-tagged jets in heavy-ion collisions

Jet substructure provides a powerful probe of partonic interactions within the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, we present a systematic theoretical study of the groomed substructures for both inclusive jets and photon-tagged jets ($γ+$jets) utilizing the Dynamical and Soft-Drop Grooming algorithms in PbPb collisions by employing the SHELL transport model. Our theoretical calculations exhibit a suppression at high $k_{\rm T,g}$, the relative transverse momentum between the two subjets in the groomed substructure, consistent with the recent ALICE measurements. We show that the suppression of high $k_{\rm T,g}$ arises from the combined effects of the reduction of the subleading subjet transverse momentum due to partonic energy loss and the narrowing of the groomed jet radius $R_g$ induced by selection bias. Our findings demonstrate that no enhancement is observed at high $k_{\rm T,g}$, even in the complete absence of selection bias. Furthermore, we propose that the broadening of $R_g$ in photon-tagged jets, which are less susceptible to selection bias compared to inclusive jets, provides relatively direct evidence of the jet substructure broadening. Our analysis reveals that the $R_g$ broadening becomes more pronounced as the jet radius increases, where the medium-induced gluon radiation plays a dominant role in driving such broadening. In particular, we find that as the jet radius increases, the Soft Drop grooming algorithm exhibits a better resolving power for the contribution of the medium response to the jet substructure broadening.

Unveiling the jet angular broadening with photon-tagged jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

The medium modification of jet substructure in hot and dense nuclear matter has garnered significant interest from the heavy-ion physics community in recent years. Measurements of inclusive jets show an angular narrowing in nucleus-nucleus collisions, while recent CMS results for photon-tagged jets ($γ$+jets) suggest evidence of broadening. In this study, we conduct a theoretical analysis of the angular structure of inclusive jets and $γ$+jets using a transport approach that accounts for jet energy loss and the medium response in the quark-gluon plasma. We examine the girth modification of $γ$+jets in $0-30\%$ PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02$ TeV, achieving satisfactory agreement with recent CMS measurements. We explore the relationship between selection bias and jet kinematics by varying the threshold for $x_{jγ} = p_T^{\rm jet}/p_T^γ$. Notably, we quantitatively demonstrate that $γ$+jets significantly reduce selection bias and can effectively select jets that have been sufficiently quenched in PbPb collisions, which is crucial for capture the jet angular broadening. Additionally, we estimate the contributions of medium-induced gluon radiation and the medium response to the broadening of the jet angular substructure. Lastly, we analyze the modification patterns of jet $R_g$ and $ΔR_{\rm axis}$ in PbPb collisions, which indicate slight broadening for $γ$+jets and noticeable narrowing for inclusive jets compared to pp collisions.

Multijet topology in high-energy nuclear collisions: jet broadening

This work presents the first theoretical investigation of the medium modification of jet broadening as an event-shape observable in multijet final states due to jet quenching in high-energy nuclear collisions. The partonic spectrum of $pp$ collisions with next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV is provided by the POWHEG$+$PYTHIA8 event generator, while the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model is utilized to investigate the energy loss of fast partons as they traverse through the hot and dense QCD medium. We present the jet broadening distributions in multijet final states for both $pp$ and PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV, then observe an enhancement at the small jet broadening region and suppression at the large jet broadening region in PbPb collisions relative to that in $pp$. This suggests that medium modification with parton energy loss in the QGP leads to a more concentrated energy flow in all observed multijet events in PbPb reactions. We also demonstrate that the intertwining of two effects, the jet number reduction and the restructured contribution, results in the novel behavior of nuclear modification of the jet broadening observable in PbPb collisions.

Phenomenological study of the angle between jet axes in heavy-ion collisions

This paper presents a phenomenological study on the angle between the Standard and the Winner-Take-All (WTA) jet axes ($ΔR_{\rm axis}^{\rm WTA-Std}$) in high-energy nuclear collisions. The $p$+$p$ baseline is provided by the Pythia8 event generator. The in-medium jet propagation is simulated by the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model, which considers both the elastic and inelastic jet-medium interactions. Our theoretical results calculated by the LBT model show that the $ΔR_{\rm axis}^{\rm WTA-Std}$ distribution in Pb+Pb at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV is narrower than that in $p$+$p$, which agrees well with the recent ALICE measurements. The narrowing of $ΔR_{\rm axis}^{\rm WTA-Std}$ seems to violate the $p_T$-broadening nature of the jet quenching effect, usually explained by the influence of "selection bias". However, the physical details still need to be fully understood. Utilizing a matching-jet method to track the jet evolution in the QGP to remove the selection bias in the Monte Carlo simulations, we observe that the $ΔR_{\rm axis}^{\rm WTA-Std}$ distribution becomes broader due to the jet-medium interactions. At the same time, by rescaling the quark/gluon-jet fractions in Pb+Pb collisions to be the same as that in $p$+$p$, we find that the fraction change may not significantly influence the modification pattern of jet $ΔR_{\rm axis}^{\rm WTA-Std}$. On the other hand, the selected jet sample in A+A collisions has a significantly narrower initial $ΔR_{\rm axis}^{\rm WTA-Std}$ distribution than the $p$+$p$ baseline, and such a biased comparison between $p$+$p$ and A+A conceals the actual jet-broadening effect in the experimental measurements. The investigations presented in this paper will deepen our understanding of the relationship between the actual intra-jet modifications in the QGP and the experimental observations.

A note on the connection between non-additive entropy and $h$-derivative

In order to study as a whole a wide part of entropy measures, we introduce a two-parameter non-extensive entropic form with respect to the $h$-derivative, which generalizes the conventional Newton--Leibniz calculus. This new entropy, $S_{h,h'}$, is proved to describe the non-extensive systems and recover several types of well-known non-extensive entropic expressions, such as the Tsallis entropy, the Abe entropy, the Shafee entropy, the Kaniadakis entropy and even the classical Boltzmann--Gibbs one. As a generalized entropy, its corresponding properties are also analyzed.

Jet radius and momentum splitting fraction with dynamical grooming in heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the medium modifications of momentum splitting fraction and groomed jet radius with both dynamical grooming and soft drop algorithms in heavy-ion collisions. In the calculation, the partonic spectrum of initial hard scattering in p+p collisions is provided by the event generator PYTHIA 8, and the energy loss of fast parton traversing in a hot/dense QCD medium is simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We predict the normalized distributions of the groomed jet radius $θ_g$ and momentum splitting fraction $z_g$ with the dynamical grooming algorithm in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV, then compare these quantities in dynamical grooming at $a=0.1$, with that in soft drop at $z_{\mathrm{cut}} = 0.1$ and $β= 0$. It is found that the normalized distribution ratios Pb+Pb/p+p with respect to $z_g$ in $z_{\mathrm{cut}} = 0.1$, $β= 0$ soft drop case are close to unity and those in $a=0.1$ dynamical grooming case show enhancement at small $z_g$, and Pb+Pb/p+p with respect to $θ_g$ in the dynamical grooming case demonstrate weaker modification than those in the soft drop counterparts. We further calculate the groomed jet number averaged momentum splitting fraction $\rm \langle z_g \rangle_{jets}$ and averaged groomed jet radius $\rm \langle θ_g \rangle_{jets}$ in p+p and A+A for both grooming cases in three $p^{\rm ch, jet}_{\rm T}$ intervals, and find that the originally generated well balanced groomed jets will become more momentum imbalanced and less jet size narrowing due to jet quenching, and weaker medium modification of $z_g$ and $θ_g$ in $a =0.1$ dynamical grooming case than in the soft drop counterparts.

Probing the in-medium $P_T$-broadening by $γ$+HF angular de-correlations

Angular correlations between vector boson and heavy flavors~(HF) are potentially new effective tools to gain insight into the partonic interactions in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this paper, we present the theoretical study of the azimuthal angular de-correlations of $γ+$HF in nucleus-nucleus collisions as a new probe of the in-medium $P_T$-broadening effect. The initial production of $γ+$HF in p+p is generated by SHERPA which matches the next-to-leading hard processes with parton shower. The in-medium heavy quark evolution is implemented by a Monte Carlo Langevin simulation, which takes into account the collisional and radiative energy loss. We observe considerable suppression at $Δϕ_{γD}\simπ$ and enhancement at $Δϕ_{γD}<2.8$ in $γ+$D azimuthal angular distribution in $0-10\%$ Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$5.02 TeV compared to the p+p baseline, which indicates evident in-medium $P_T$-broadening of charm quarks. We also find that the overall modification patterns of $γ+$D angular distribution are sensitive to the selection cut of D meson $p_T$. Furthermore, by constructing the 2D ($x_{J}^{γD}, Δϕ_{γD}$) correlation diagram, it's possible to display the respective impacts of the two aspects of jet quenching, energy loss and $P_T$-broadening, on the final-state $γ+$D observable simultaneously. Additionally, we find weaker angular de-correlations of $γ+$B compared to $γ+$D which may be helpful to understand the mass hierarchy in heavy-ion collisions. Finally, the nuclear modification of $Δϕ_{γD}$ distributions in central $0-10\%$ Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy is provided for completeness.

Phenomenological study of the anisotropic quark matter in the 2-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

With the two flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model we carry out a phenomenological study on the chiral phase structure, mesonic properties and transport properties in a momentum-space anisotropic quark matter. To calculate transport coefficients we have utilized the kinetic theory in the relaxation time approximation, where the momentum anisotropy is embedded in the estimation of both distribution function and the relaxation time. It is shown that an increase of the anisotropy parameter $ξ$ may results in a catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking. The critical endpoint (CEP) is shifted to smaller temperatures and larger quark chemical potentials as $ξ$ increases, the impact of momentum anisotropy on temperature of CEP is almost the same as that on the quark chemical potential of CEP. The meson masses and the associated decay widths also exhibit a significant $ξ$ dependence. It is observed that the temperature behavior of scaled shear viscosity $η/T^3$ and scaled electrical conductivity $σ_{el}/T$ exhibit a similar dip structure, with the minima of both $η/T^3$ and $σ_{el}/T$ shifting toward higher temperatures with increasing $ξ$. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the Seebeck coefficient $S$ decreases when temperature goes up and its sign is positive, indicating the dominant carriers for converting the temperature gradient to the electric field are up-quarks. The Seebeck coefficient $S$ is significantly enhanced with a large $ξ$ for the temperature below the critical temperature.

Thermoelectric properties of (an-)isotropic QGP in magnetic fields

The Seebeck effect and the Nernst effect, which reflect the appearance of electric fields along $x$-axis and along $y$-axis ($E_{x}$ and $E_{y}$), respectively, induced by the thermal gradient along $x$-axis, are studied in the QGP at an external magnetic field along $z$-axis. We calculate the associated Seebeck coefficient ($S_{xx}$) and Nernst signal ($N$) using the relativistic Boltzmann equation under the relaxation time approximation. In an isotropic QGP, the influences of magnetic field ($B$) and quark chemical potential ($μ_{q}$) on these thermoelectric transport coefficients are investigated. In the presence (absence) of weak magnetic field, we find $S_{xx}$ for a fixed $μ_{q}$ is negative (positive) in sign, indicating that the dominant carriers for converting heat gradient to electric field are negatively (positively) charged quarks. The absolute value of $S_{xx}$ decreases with increasing temperature. Unlike $S_{xx}$, the sign of $N$ is independent of charge carrier type, and its thermal behavior displays a peak structure. In the presence of strong magnetic field, due to the Landau quantization of transverse motion of (anti-)quarks perpendicular to magnetic field, only the longitudinal Seebeck coefficient ($S_{zz}$) exists. Our results show that the value of $S_{zz}$ at a fixed $μ_{q}$ in the lowest Landau level (LLL) approximation always remains positive. Within the effect of high Landau levels, $S_{zz}$ exhibits a thermal structure similar to that in the LLL approximation. As the Landau level increases further, $S_{zz}$ decreases and even its sign changes from positive to negative. The computations of these thermoelectric transport coefficients are also extended to a medium with momentum-anisotropy induced by initial spatial expansion as well as strong magnetic field.

In-medium effect on the thermodynamics and transport coefficients in van der Waals hadron resonance gas

An extension of the van der Waals hadron resonance gas (VDWHRG) model which includes in-medium thermal modification of hadron masses, the TVDWHRG model, is considered in this paper. Based on the 2+1 flavor Polyakov Linear Sigma Model(PLSM) and the scaling mass rule for hadrons we obtain the temperature behavior of all hadron masses for different fixed baryon chemical potentials $μ_{B}$. We calculate various thermodynamic observables at $μ_{B}=0$ GeV in TVDWHRG model. An improved agreement with the lattice data by TVDWHRG model in the crossover region ($T\sim 0.16-0.19$ GeV) is observed as compared to those by VDWHRG and Ideal HRG (IHRG) models. We further discuss the effects of in-medium modification of hadron masses and VDW interactions on the transport coefficients such as shear viscosity ($η$), scaled thermal ($λ/T^{2}$) and electrical ($σ_{el}/T$ conductivities in IHRG model at different $μ_{B}$, by utilizing quasi-particle kinetic theory with relaxation time approximation.
