Plans for Evaluating Structured Generative Search Summaries

We propose a framework for evaluating structured generative search summaries that are placed atop organic web search results. A structured summary, generated by a large language model, typically consists of an overview, several sections with section titles, and a list of source documents that are cited within the summary. We then describe our plans for implementing and evaluating the framework.

Self supervised convolutional kernel based handcrafted feature harmonization: Enhanced left ventricle hypertension disease phenotyping on echocardiography

Radiomics, a medical imaging technique, extracts quantitative handcrafted features from images to predict diseases. Harmonization in those features ensures consistent feature extraction across various imaging devices and protocols. Methods for harmonization include standardized imaging protocols, statistical adjustments, and evaluating feature robustness. Myocardial diseases such as Left Ventricular Hypertrophy (LVH) and Hypertensive Heart Disease (HHD) are diagnosed via echocardiography, but variable imaging settings pose challenges. Harmonization techniques are crucial for applying handcrafted features in disease diagnosis in such scenario. Self-supervised learning (SSL) enhances data understanding within limited datasets and adapts to diverse data settings. ConvNeXt-V2 integrates convolutional layers into SSL, displaying superior performance in various tasks. This study focuses on convolutional filters within SSL, using them as preprocessing to convert images into feature maps for handcrafted feature harmonization. Our proposed method excelled in harmonization evaluation and exhibited superior LVH classification performance compared to existing methods.

Enrichment by supernovae in globular clusters with multiple populations

The most massive globular cluster in the Milky Way, omega Centauri, is thought to be the remaining core of a disrupted dwarf galaxy, as expected within the model of hierarchical merging. It contains several stellar populations having different heavy elemental abundances supplied by supernovae -- a process known as metal enrichment. Although M22 appears to be similar to omega Cen, other peculiar globular clusters do not. Therefore omega Cen and M22 are viewed as exceptional, and the presence of chemical inhomogeneities in other clusters is seen as `pollution' from the intermediate-mass asymptotic-giant-branch stars expected in normal globular clusters. Here we report Ca abundances for seven globular clusters and compare them to omega Cen. Calcium and other heavy elements can only be supplied through numerous supernovae explosions of massive stars in these stellar systems, but the gravitational potentials of the present-day clusters cannot preserve most of the ejecta from such explosions. We conclude that these globular clusters, like omega Cen, are most probably the relics of more massive primeval dwarf galaxies that merged and disrupted to form the proto-Galaxy.
