Sliding Ferroelectric Tunnel Junctions

Very recently, ferroelectric polarization in staggered bilayer hexagonal boron nitride (BBN) and its novel sliding inversion mechanism was reported experimentally (Science 2021, 372, 1458; 2021, 372, 1462), which paves a new way to realize van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectric devices with new functionalities. Here, we develop vdW sliding ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs) using the sliding ferroelectric BBN unit as ultrathin barriers and explore their transport properties with different ferroelectric states and metal contacts via the first principles. It is found that the electrode/BBN contact electric field quenches the ferroelectricity in the staggered BBN, resulting a very small tunnelling electroresistance (TER). Inserting high-mobility 2D materials between Au and BN can restore the BBN ferroelectricity, reaching a giant TER of ~10,000% in sliding FTJs. We finally investigate the metal-contact and thickness effect on the tunnelling property of sliding FTJs. The giant TER and multiple non-volatile resistance states in vdW sliding FTJs show the promising applications in voltage-controlled nano-memories with ultrahigh storage density.

Trapping Horizons of the Evolving Charged Wormhole and Black Bounce

We obtain one family of dynamic solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar(EMS) theory. Our solutions could describe the evolving charged black(white) hole or wormhole and its transition, including the case of black bounce/wormhole transition. We compare different wormhole throat definitions and suggest that the usage of trapping horizons is the most suitable choice for tracking the evolution of the dynamic black(white) hole and wormhole, and their conversion in a unified framework. Then we research several evolving processes in the appropriate parameters region, including the charge, the initial condition for the scalar hair, and parameters in our EMS Lagrangian. The results show that the appearance of a degenerate marginal trapped surface is the crucial event for the conversion or transition, particularly in these cases: i) when the evolving wormhole converts to a black hole, the surface emerges and splits into two trapping horizons; ii) if the metric would become a black hole but finally fails, two trapping horizons combine as the surface and then vanish; iii) if the black bounce/wormhole transition happens, one single trapping horizon changes its type.

Metamagnetic Transitions in Few-Layer CrOCl Controlled by Magnetic Anisotropy Flipping

The pivotal role of magnetic anisotropy in stabilising two-dimensional (2D) magnetism has been widely accepted, however, direct correlation between magnetic anisotropy and long-range magnetic ordering in the 2D limit is yet to be explored. Here, using angle- and temperature-dependent tunnelling magnetoresistance, we report unprecedented metamagnetic phase transitions in atomically-thin CrOCl, triggered by magnetic easy-axis flipping instead of the conventional spin flop mechanism. Few-layer CrOCl tunnelling devices of various thicknesses consistently show an in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with the easy axis aligned along the Cr-O-Cr direction (b-axis). Strikingly, with the presence of a magnetic field perpendicular to the easy-axis (H||c), magnetization of CrOCl does not follow the prevalent spin rotation and saturation pattern, but rather exhibits an easy-axis flipping from the in-plane to out-of-plane directions. Such magnetic anisotropy controlled metamagnetic phase transitions are manifested by a drastic upturn in tun- nelling current, which shows anomalous shifts towards higher H when temperature increases. By 2D mapping of tunnelling currents as a function of both temperature and H, we determine a unique ferrimagnetic state with a superstructure periodicity of five unit cells after the field-induced metam- agnetic transitions. The feasibility to control 2D magnetism by manipulating magnetic anisotropy may open enormous opportunities in spin-based device applications.

Observation of the Orbital Rashba-Edelstein Magnetoresistance

We report the observation of magnetoresistance (MR) originating from the orbital angular momentum transport (OAM) in a Permalloy (Py) / oxidized Cu (Cu*) heterostructure: the orbital Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance. The angular dependence of the MR depends on the relative angle between the induced OAM and the magnetization in a similar fashion as the spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). Despite the absence of elements with large spin-orbit coupling, we find a sizable MR ratio, which is in contrast to the conventional SMR which requires heavy elements. By varying the thickness of the Cu* layer, we confirm that the interface is responsible for the MR, suggesting that the orbital Rashba-Edelstein effect is responsible for the generation of the OAM. Through Py thickness-dependence studies, we find that the effective values for the spin diffusion and spin dephasing lengths of Py are significantly larger than the values measured in Py / Pt bilayers, approximately by the factor of 2 and 4, respectively. This implies that another mechanism beyond the conventional spin-based scenario is responsible for the MR observed in Py / Cu* structures originated in a sizeable transport of OAM. Our findings not only unambiguously demonstrate the current-induced torque without using any heavy element via the OAM channel but also provide an important clue towards the microscopic understanding of the role that OAM transport can play for magnetization dynamics.

Magnetic coupling in Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Gd$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ heterostructures

Ferrimagnetic Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) is the prototypical material for studying magnonic properties due to its exceptionally low damping. By substituting the yttrium with other rare earth elements that have a net magnetic moment, we can introduce an additional spin degree of freedom. Here, we study the magnetic coupling in epitaxial Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$/Gd$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG/GIG) heterostructures grown by pulsed laser deposition. From bulk sensitive magnetometry and surface sensitive spin Seebeck effect (SSE) and spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) measurements, we determine the alignment of the heterostructure magnetization through temperature and external magnetic field. The ferromagnetic coupling between the Fe sublattices of YIG and GIG dominates the overall behavior of the heterostructures. Due to the temperature dependent gadolinium moment, a magnetic compensation point of the total bilayer system can be identified. This compensation point shifts to lower temperatures with increasing thickness of YIG due the parallel alignment of the iron moments. We show that we can control the magnetic properties of the heterostructures by tuning the thickness of the individual layers, opening up a large playground for magnonic devices based on coupled magnetic insulators. These devices could potentially control the magnon transport analogously to electron transport in giant magnetoresistive devices.

Extreme Suppression of Antiferromagnetic Order and Critical Scaling in a Two-Dimensional Random Quantum Magnet

Sr$_2$CuTeO$_6$ is a square-lattice Néel antiferromagnet with superexchange between first-neighbor $S=1/2$ Cu spins mediated by plaquette centered Te ions. Substituting Te by W, the affected impurity plaquettes have predominantly second-neighbor interactions, thus causing local magnetic frustration. Here we report a study of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$ using neutron diffraction and $μ$SR techniques, showing that the Néel order vanishes already at $x = 0.025 \pm 0.005$. We explain this extreme order suppression using a two-dimensional Heisenberg spin model, demonstrating that a W-type impurity induces a deformation of the order parameter that decays with distance as $1/r^2$ at temperature $T=0$. The associated logarithmic singularity leads to loss of order for any $x>0$. Order for small $x>0$ and $T>0$ is induced by weak interplane couplings. In the nonmagnetic phase of Sr$_2$CuTe$_{1-x}$W$_x$O$_6$, the $μ$SR relaxation rate exhibits quantum critical scaling with a large dynamic exponent, $z \approx 3$, consistent with a random-singlet state.

Identifying the origin of the non-monotonic thickness dependence of spin-orbit torques and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a ferrimagnetic insulator heterostructure

Electrical manipulation of magnetism via spin-orbit torques (SOTs) promises efficient spintronic devices. In systems comprising magnetic insulators and heavy metals, SOTs have started to be investigated only recently, especially in systems with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI). Here, we quantitatively study the SOT efficiency and iDMI in a series of gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) / thulium iron garnet (TmIG) / platinum (Pt) heterostructures with varying TmIG and Pt thicknesses. We find that the non-monotonic SOT efficiency as a function of the magnetic layer thickness is not consistent with the 1/thickness dependence expected from a simple interfacial SOT mechanism. Moreover, considering the insulating nature of TmIG, our results cannot be explained by the SOT mechanism established for metallic magnets where the transverse charge spin current can inject and dephase in the magnetic layers. Rather we can explain this non-monotonic behavior by a model based on the interfacial spin mixing conductance that is affected by the thickness-dependent exchange splitting energy by determining the phase difference of the reflected spin-up and spin-down electrons at the TmIG / Pt interface. By studying the Pt thickness dependence, we find that the effective DMI for GGG / TmIG / Pt does not depend on the Pt thickness, which indicates that the GGG / TmIG interface is the source of the iDMI in this system. Our work demonstrates that SOT and DMI can originate from two different interfaces, which enables independent optimization of DMI and SOT for advanced chiral spintronics with low damping magnetic insulators.

Bronnikov-like Wormholes in Einstein-Scalar Gravity

In this paper, we analyse the global structure of the Bronnikov wormhole, which is the most general spherically-symmetric and static solution in Einstein gravity coupled to a free massless phantom scalar. We then introduce a scalar potential and construct a large class of exact solutions that can be viewed as generalizations of the Bronnikov wormhole. We study the global structure and classify the parameters of these new wormholes. For suitable parameters, some are regular black holes with a bouncing de Sitter spacetime inside the event horizon.

Influence of Atomic Roughness at The Uncompensated Fe/CoO (111) Interface on Exchange Bias Effect

The effect of interface roughness of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers on exchange bias is still not well understood. In this report we have investigated the effect of surface roughness in (111)-oriented antiferromagnetic CoO films on exchange bias with ferromagnetic Fe grown on top. The surface roughness is controlled at the atomic scale, over a range below ~ 0.35 nm, by varying layer thickness of the CoO films. It is observed that both exchange bias field ($H_{E}$) and coercivity ($H_{C}$) extensively depend on the atomic scale roughness of the CoO (111) at the interface with Fe film. An opposite dependence of $H_{E}$ and $H_{C}$ on interface roughness was found, which was ascribed to partially compensated spin states induced by the atomic roughness at the fully uncompensated CoO (111) surfaces and was corroborated using the Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, the onset temperature for $H_{C}$ is found to be up to ~ 80 K below the blocking temperature ($T_{B}$) and the temperature dependence of $H_{C}$ follows the power law with a critical exponent equal to one, which indicates that, in this system, $H_{C}$ is more of an interface-related property than $H_{E}$.

Charged Ellis Wormhole and Black Bounce

By replacing the scalar $ϕ$ with $iϕ$ in the solution constructed in Ref\cite{Huang:2019lsl}, we obtain electrically-charged wormhole and black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory, in which the scalar is a phantom field coupled to the Maxwell field non-minimally. Our solutions are simpler than the previously-known charged wormholes in the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in that both the scalar and the radius of the foliating sphere of our solutions are independent of electric charge. The wormhole solution has two asymptotically flat regions and reduces to Ellis wormhole when the charge is zero. We draw the embedding diagrams for the wormholes and demonstrate that the two sides are asymmetric. As the charge increases, horizons will appear, and the wormhole becomes a black hole, with no curvature singularity but a wormhole throat or a bounce. We analyze black hole thermodynamics and the causal structure. We also determine the photon spheres of both the wormhole and the black hole and discuss their observable characteristics.

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and chiral magnetic textures in a ferrimagnetic insulator

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in multilayers of heavy metal and ferromagnetic metals enables the stabilization of novel chiral spin structures such as skyrmions. Magnetic insulators, on the other hand can exhibit enhanced dynamics and properties such as lower magnetic damping and therefore it is of interest to combine the properties enabled by interfacial DMI with insulating systems. Here, we demonstrate the presence of interfacial DMI in heterostructures that include insulating magnetic layers. We use a bilayer of perpendicularly magnetized insulating thulium iron garnet (TmIG) and the heavy metal platinum, and find a surprisingly strong interfacial DMI that, combined with spin-orbit torque results, in efficient switching. The interfacial origin is confirmed through thickness dependence measurements of the DMI, revealing the characteristic 1/thickness dependence with one order of magnitude longer decay length compared to metallic layers. We combine chiral spin structures and spin-orbit torques for efficient switching and identify skyrmions that allow us to establish the GGG/TmIG interface as the origin of the DMI.

The global monopole spacetime and its topological charge

In this paper, we show that the global monopole spacetime is one of the exact solutions of Einstein equations by means of the method treating the matter field as a non-linear sigma model, without the weak field approximation applied in the original derivation by Barriola and Vilenkin in 1989. Furthermore, we find the physical origin of the topological charge in the global monopole spacetime. Finally, we generalize the proposal which generates spacetime from thermodynamical laws to the case that spacetime with global monopole charge.

Enhancement of exchange bias in ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic core-shell nanoparticles through ferromagnetic domain wall formation

The spin configuration in the ferromagnetic part during the magnetization reversal plays a crucial role in the exchange bias effect. Through Monte Carlo simulation, the exchange bias effect in ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic core-shell nanoparticles is investigated. Magnetization reversals in the ferromagnetic core were controlled between the coherent rotation and the domain wall motion by modulating ferromagnetic domain wall width with parameters of uniaxial anisotropy constant and exchange coupling strength. An anomalous monotonic dependence of exchange bias on the uniaxial anisotropy constant is found in systems with small exchange coupling, showing an obvious violation of classic Meiklejohn-Bean model, while domain walls are found to form close to the interface and propagate in the ferromagnetic core with larger uniaxial anisotropy in both branches of the hysteresis. The asymmetric magnetization reversal with the formation of a spherical domain wall dramatically reduces the coercive field in the ascending branch, leading to the enhancement of the exchange bias. The results provide another degree of freedom to optimize the magnetic properties of magnetic nanoparticles for applications.

Spontaneous Valley Splitting and Valley Pseudospin Field Effect Transistor of Monolayer VAgP2Se6

Valleytronics is a rising topic to explore the emergent degree of freedom for charge carriers in energy band edges and has attracted a great interest due to many intriguing quantum phenomena and potential application in information processing industry. Creation of permanent valley polarization, i.e. unbalanced occupation at different valleys, is a chief challenge and also urgent question to be solved in valleytronics. Here we predict that the spin-orbit coupling and magnetic ordering allow spontaneous valley Zeeman-type splitting in pristine monolayer of VAgP2Se6 by using first-principles calculations. The Zeeman-type valley splitting can lead to permanent valley polarization after suitable doping. The Zeeman-type valley splitting is similar to the role of spin polarization in spintronics and is a vital requirement for practical devices in valleytronics. The nonequivalent valleys of VAgP2Se6 monolayer can emit or absorb circularly polarized photons with opposite chirality, and thus this material shows a great potential to work as a photonic spin filter and circularly-polarized-light resource. A valley pseudospin field effect transistor (VPFET) is designed based on the monolayer VAgP2Se6 akin to the spin field effect transistors. Beyond common transistors, VPFETs carry information of not only the electrons but also the valley pseudospins.

Symmetric Space-times from Thermodynamics

We apply thermodynamics method to generate exact solution with maximum symmetric surface for Einstein equation without solving it. The exact solutions are identified with which people have solved before. The horizons structure of solutions are discussed in different situation. These results suggest that plane,spherical,pseudo-spherical symmetric spacetime form a family of solutions, and this relationship can also be extended to Kerr spacetime and Taub-NUT spacetime. It sheds light on exploring more general definition of Misner-Sharp mass.

Tunable giant exchange bias in single-phase rare earth-transition metal intermetallics YMn12-xFex with highly homogenous inter-sublattice exchange coupling

In this paper, we have found a family of intermetallic compounds YMn12-xFex (x = 6.6-8.8) showing a bulk form of tunable giant exchange bias effect which arises from global interactions among ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) sublattices but not the interfacial exchange coupling or inhomogeneous magnetic clusters. A giant exchange bias with a loop shift up to 6.1 kOe has been observed in YMn4.4Fe7.6 compound with the strongest competing magnetic interactions. In a narrow temperature range, the exchange bias field shows a sudden switching off whereas the coercivity shows a sudden switching on with increasing temperature. This unique feature indicates that the inter-sublattice exchange coupling is highly homogenous, which can be perfectly interperated by our theoretical calculations.

Does P-type Ohmic Contact Exist in WSe2-metal Interfaces?

Formation of low-resistance metal contacts is the biggest challenge that masks the intrinsic exceptional electronic properties of 2D WSe2 devices. We present the first comparative study of the interfacial properties between ML/BL WSe2 and Sc, Al, Ag, Au, Pd, and Pt contacts by using ab initio energy band calculations with inclusion of the spin-orbital coupling (SOC) effects and quantum transport simulations. The interlayer coupling tends to reduce both the electron and hole Schottky barrier heights (SBHs) and alters the polarity for WSe2-Au contact, while the SOC chiefly reduces the hole SBH. In the absence of the SOC, Pd contact has the smallest hole SBH with a value no less than 0.22 eV. Dramatically, Pt contact surpasses Pd contact and becomes p-type Ohmic or quasi-Ohmic contact with inclusion of the SOC. Our study provides a theoretical foundation for the selection of favorable metal electrodes in ML/BL WSe2 devices.
