A Unified Description for Comprehensive Sets of Jet Energy Loss Observables with CUJET3

Jet energy loss in heavy ion collisions, as quantified by the traditional observable of high $p_T$ hadron's nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$, provides highly informative "imaging" of the hot medium created in heavy ion collisions. There are now comprehensive sets of available data, from average suppression to azimuthal anisotropy, from light to heavy flavors, from RHIC 200GeV to LHC 2.76TeV as well as 5.02TeV collisions. A unified description of such comprehensive data presents a stringent vetting of any viable model for jet quenching phenomenology. In this contribution we report such a systematic and successful test of CUJET3, a jet energy loss simulation framework built upon a nonperturbative microscopic model for the hot medium as a semi-quark-gluon-monopole plasma (sQGMP) which integrates two essential elements of confinement, i.e. the Polyakov-loop suppression of quarks/gluons and emergent magnetic monopoles.

Quantifying the Chiral Magnetic Effect from Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics

In this contribution we report a recently developed Anomalous-Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD) framework, which simulates the evolution of fermion currents in QGP on top of the bulk expansion from data-validated VISHNU hydrodynamics. With reasonable estimates of initial conditions and magnetic field lifetime, the predicted CME signal is quantitatively consistent with change separation measurements in 200GeV Au-Au collisions at RHIC. We further develop the event-by-event AVFD simulations that allow direct evaluation of two-particle correlations arising from CME signal as well as the non-CME backgrounds. Finally we report predictions from AVFD simulations for the upcoming isobaric (Ru-Ru v.s. Zr-Zr ) collisions that could provide the critical test of the CME in heavy ion collisions.

Rotating quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We study the rotational collective motion of the quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy ion collisions using the widely-adopted AMPT (A Multi-Phase Transport) model. The global angular momentum, the average vorticity carried by the quark-gluon plasma, and the locally defined vorticity fields are computed for Au+Au collisions, with detailed information of their time evolution, spatial distribution, as well as the dependence on beam energy and collision centrality.

Anomalous Chiral Transport in Heavy Ion Collisions

Chiral anomaly is a very fundamental aspect of quantum theories with chiral fermion, from the Standard Model to supersymmetric field theories or even string theories. How such microscopic anomaly manifests itself in a macroscopic many-body system with chiral fermions, is a highly nontrivial question that has recently attracted significant interest. As it turns out, unusual transport currents can be induced by chiral anomaly under suitable conditions in such systems, with the notable example of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) where a vector current (e.g. electric current) is generated along an external magnetic field. The CME has been enthusiastically studied in two very different physical systems: the Dirac and Weyl semimetals in condensed matter physics as well as the quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions. In this contribution, we report the latest theoretical and experimental status for the search of CME in heavy ion collisions.

From gluon topology to chiral anomaly: Emergent phenomena in quark-gluon plasma

Heavy-ion collision experiments at RHIC and the LHC have found a new emergent phase of QCD, a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) that is distinctively different from either the low temperature hadron phase or the very high temperature weakly coupled plasma phase. Highly nontrivial emergent phenomena occur in such sQGP and two examples will be discussed in this contribution: the magnetic component of sQGP that stems from topologically nontrivial configurations in the gluon sector; and the anomalous chiral transport that arises as macroscopic manifestation of microscopic chiral anomaly in the quark sector. For both examples, their important roles in explaining pertinent heavy-ion data will be emphasized.

The thermalization of soft modes in non-expanding isotropic quark gluon plasmas

We discuss the role of elastic and inelastic collisions and their interplay in the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma. We consider a simplified situation of a static plasma, spatially uniform and isotropic in momentum space. We focus on the small momentum region, which equilibrates first, and on a short time scale. We obtain a simple kinetic equation that allows for an analytic description of the most important regimes. The present analysis suggests that the formation of a Bose condensate, expected when only elastic collisions are present, is strongly hindered by the inelastic, radiative, processes.

Pairing Phase Transitions of Matter under Rotation

The phases and properties of matter under global rotation have attracted much interest recently. In this paper we investigate the pairing phenomena in a system of fermions under the presence of rotation. We find that there is a generic suppression effect on pairing states with zero angular momentum. We demonstrate this effect with the chiral condensation and the color superconductivity in hot dense QCD matter as explicit examples. In the case of chiral condensation, a new phase diagram in the temperature-rotation parameter space is found, with a nontrivial critical point.

Bridging Soft-Hard Transport Properties of Quark-Gluon Plasmas with CUJET3.0

A new model of jet quenching in nuclear collisions, CUJET3.0, is constructed by generalizing the perturbative QCD based CUJET2.0 model to include two complementary non-perturbative features of the QCD confinement cross-over phase transition near $T_c\approx 160$ MeV: (1) the suppression of quark and gluon degrees of freedom and (2) the emergence of chromo-magnetic monopole degrees of freedom. Such a semi-Quark-Gluon-Monopole Plasma (sQGMP) microscopic scenario is tested by comparing predictions of the leading hadron nuclear modification factors, $R^h_{AA}(p_T>10{\rm GeV/c},\sqrt{s})$, and their azimuthal elliptic asymmetry $v^h_2(p_T>10{\rm GeV/c},\sqrt{s})$ with available data on $h=π,D,B$ jet fragments from nuclear collisions at RHIC($\sqrt{s}=0.2$ ATeV) and LHC($\sqrt{s}$=2.76 ATeV). The sQGMP model is shown to solve the long standing $R_{AA}$ vs $v_2$ puzzle by predicting a maximum of the jet quenching parameter field $\hat{q}(E,T)/T^3$ near $T_c$. The consistency of jet quenching with observed bulk perfect fluidity is demonstrated by extrapolating the sQGMP $\hat{q}$ down to thermal energy $E\sim 3 T$ scales and showing that the sQGMP shear viscosity to entropy density ratio $η/s \approx T^3/\hat{q}$ falls close to the unitarity bound, $1/4π$, in the range $(1-2)T_c$. Detailed comparisons of CUJET2.0 and CUJET3.0 reveal that the remarkably different $\hat{q}(T)$ could be consistent with the same $R_{AA}$ data and could only be distinguished by anisotropy observables. These findings demonstrate clearly the inadequacy of focusing on the jet path averaged quantity $<\hat{q}>$ as the only relevant medium property to characterize jet quenching, and point to the crucial roles of other essential factors, such as the chromo electric and magnetic composites of the plasma, the screening masses and the running couplings at multiple scales that all strongly influence jet energy loss.

Hydrodynamics with chiral anomaly and charge separation in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Matter with chiral fermions is microscopically described by theory with quantum anomaly and macroscopically described (at low energy) by anomalous hydrodynamics. For such systems in the presence of external magnetic field and chirality imbalance, a charge current is generated along the magnetic field direction --- a phenomenon known as the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME). The quark-gluon plasma created in relativistic heavy ion collisions provides an (approximate) example, for which the CME predicts a charge separation perpendicular to the collisional reaction plane. Charge correlation measurements designed for the search of such signal have been done at RHIC and the LHC for which the interpretations, however, remain unclear due to contamination by background effects that are collective flow driven, theoretically poorly constrained, and experimentally hard to separate. Using anomalous (and viscous) hydrodynamic simulations, we make a first attempt at quantifying contributions to observed charge correlations from both CME and background effects in one and same framework. The implications for the search of CME are discussed.

Chiral Magnetic Effect in Heavy Ion Collisions

The Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) is a remarkable phenomenon that stems from highly nontrivial interplay of QCD chiral symmetry, axial anomaly, and gluonic topology. It is of fundamental importance to search for the CME in experiments. The heavy ion collisions provide a unique environment where a hot chiral-symmetric quark-gluon plasma is created, gluonic topological fluctuations generate chirality imbalance, and very strong magnetic fields $|\vec{\bf B}|\sim m_π^2$ are present during the early stage of such collisions. Significant efforts have been made to look for CME signals in heavy ion collision experiments. In this contribution we give a brief overview on the status of such efforts.

Long wavelength perfect fluidity from short distance jet transport in quark-gluon plasmas

We build a new phenomenological framework that bridges the long wavelength bulk viscous transport properties of the strongly-coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) and short distance hard jet transport properties in the QGP. The full nonperturbative chromo-electric (E) and chromo-magnetic (M) structure of the near "perfect fluid" like sQGP in the critical transition region are integrated into a semi-Quark-Gluon-Monopole Plasma (sQGMP) model lattice-compatibly and implemented into the new CUJET3.0 jet quenching framework. All observables computed from CUJET3.0 are found to be consistent with available data at RHIC and LHC simultaneously. A quantitative connection between the shear viscosity and jet transport parameter is rigorously established within this framework. We deduce the $T=160-600$ MeV dependence of the QGP's $η/s$: its near vanishing value in the near $T_c$ regime is determined by the composition of E and M charges, it increases as $T$ rises, and its high $T$ limit is fixed by color screening scales.

Glasma Evolution and Bose-Einstein Condensation with Elastic and Inelastic Collisions

In this paper we investigate the role of inelastic collisions in the kinetic evolution of a highly overpopulated gluon system starting from Glasma-type initial condition. Using the Gunion-Bertsch formula we derive the inelastic collision kernel under the collinear and small angle approximations. With both numerics and analytic analysis, we show that the inelastic process has two effects: globally changing (mostly reducing) the total particle number, while locally at small momentum regime always filling up the infrared modes extremely quickly. This latter effect is found to significantly speed up the emergence of a local thermal distribution in the infrared regime with vanishing local "chemical potential" and thus catalyze the onset of dynamical Bose-Einstein Condensation to occur faster (as compared with the purely elastic case) in the overpopulated Glasma.

Chiral vortical wave and induced flavor charge transport in a rotating quark-gluon plasma

We show the existence of a new gapless collective excitation in a rotating fluid system with chiral fermions, named as the Chiral Vortical Wave (CVW). The CVW has its microscopic origin at the quantum anomaly and macroscopically arises from interplay between vector and axial charge fluctuations induced by vortical effects. The wave equation is obtained both from hydrodynamic current equations and from chiral kinetic theory and its solutions show nontrivial CVW-induced charge transport from different initial conditions. Using the rotating quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions as a concrete example, we show the formation of induced flavor quadrupole in QGP and estimate the elliptic flow splitting effect for Lambda baryons that may be experimentally measured.

Charge-dependent azimuthal correlations from AuAu to UU collisions

We study the charge-dependent azimuthal correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions, as motivated by the search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) and the investigation of related background contributions. In particular we aim to understand how these correlations induced by various proposed effects evolve from collisions with AuAu system to that with UU system. To do that, we quantify the generation of magnetic field in UU collisions at RHIC energy and its azimuthal correlation to the matter geometry using event-by-event simulations. Taking the experimental data for charge-dependent azimuthal correlations from AuAu collisions and extrapolating to UU with reasonable assumptions, we examine the resulting correlations to be expected in UU collisions and compare them with recent STAR measurements. Based on such analysis we discuss the viability for explaining the data with a combination of the CME-like and flow-induced contributions.

Consistency of Perfect Fluidity and Jet Quenching in semi-Quark-Gluon Monopole Plasmas

We utilize a new framework, CUJET3.0, to deduce the energy and temperature dependence of jet transport parameter, $\hat{q}(E>10\; {\rm GeV},T)$, from a combined analysis of available data on nuclear modification factor and azimuthal asymmetries from RHIC/BNL and LHC/CERN on high energy nuclear collisions. Extending a previous perturbative-QCD based jet energy loss model (known as CUJET2.0) with (2+1)D viscous hydrodynamic bulk evolution, this new framework includes three novel features of nonperturbative physics origin: (1) the Polyakov loop suppression of color-electric scattering (aka "semi-QGP" of Pisarski et al) and (2) the enhancement of jet scattering due to emergent magnetic monopoles near $T_c$ (aka "magnetic scenario" of Liao and Shuryak) and (3) thermodynamic properties constrained by lattice QCD data. CUJET3.0 reduces to v2.0 at high temperatures $T > 400$ MeV, but greatly enhances $\hat{q}$ near the QCD deconfinement transition temperature range. This enhancement accounts well for the observed elliptic harmonics of jets with $p_T>10$ GeV. Extrapolating our data-constrained $\hat{q}$ down to thermal energy scales, $E \sim 2$ GeV, we find for the first time a remarkable consistency between high energy jet quenching and bulk perfect fluidity with $η/s\sim T^3/\hat{q} \sim 0.1$ near $T_c$.

Gluon Transport Equation with Effective Mass and Dynamical Onset of Bose-Einstein Condensation

We study the transport equation describing a dense system of gluons, in the small scattering angle approximation, taking into account medium-generated effective masses of the gluons. We focus on the case of overpopulated systems that are driven to Bose-Einstein condensation on their way to thermalization. The presence of a mass modifies the dispersion relation of the gluon, as compared to the massless case, but it is shown that this does not change qualitatively the scaling behavior in the vicinity of the onset.
