Thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma and dynamical formation of Bose-Einstein Condensate

We report recent progress on understanding the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma during the early stage in a heavy ion collision. The initially high overpopulation in the pre-equilibrium gluonic matter (``glasma'') is shown to play a crucial role. The strongly interacting nature (and thus fast evolution) naturally arises as an {\em emergent property} of this pre-equilibrium matter where the intrinsic coupling is weak but the highly occupied gluon states coherently amplify the scattering. A possible transient Bose-Einstein Condensate is argued to form dynamically on a rather general ground. We develop the kinetic approach for describing this highly overpopulated system and find approximate scaling solutions as well as numerically study the onset of condensation. Finally we discuss possible phenomenological implications.

Hard Probe of Soft Matter Geometry and Fluctuations from RHIC to LHC

We report results on event-by-event hard probe of soft matter geometry and fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. Geometric data ($v_2$ of high $p_t$ hadrons) from RHIC plus LHC clearly favors jet "monography" model with strong near-Tc enhancement of jet-medium interaction strength which also implies a less opaque medium at LHC. We also quantify the jet responses to all harmonic anisotropy $v_n$($n=1,2,3,4,5,6$) and their manifestation in hard-soft azimuthal correlations.

Charge-Dependent Correlations in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions and the Chiral Magnetic Effect

We provide a phenomenological analysis of present experimental searches for local parity violation manifested through the Chiral Magnetic Effect. We introduce and discuss the relevant correlation functions used for the measurements. Our analysis of the available data from both RHIC and LHC shows that the present experimental evidence for the Chiral Magnetic Effect is rather ambiguous. We further discuss in some detail various background contributions due to conventional physics, which need to be understood quantitatively in order to draw a definitive conclusion about the existence of local parity violation in heavy ion collisions.

Jet Tomography of Harmonic Fluctuations in the Initial Condition of Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper we study the jet response (particularly azimuthal anisotropy) as a hard probe of the harmonic fluctuations in the initial condition of central heavy ion collisions. By implementing the fluctuations via cumulant expansion for various harmonics quantified by $ε_n$ and using the geometric model for jet energy loss, we compute the response $χ^h_n=v_n/ε_n$. Combining these results with the known hydrodynamic response of the bulk matter expansion in the literature, we show that the hard-soft azimuthal correlation arising from their respective responses to the common geometric fluctuations reveals a robust and narrow near-side peak that may provide the dominant contribution to the "hard-ridge" observed in experimental data.

Non-perturbative Jet Quenching from Geometric Data

This contribution discusses the geometric tomography by highly energetic jets penetrating the hot QCD matter in heavy ion collisions from RHIC to LHC energies. In particular the geometric data on the azimuthal anisotropy of high $p_t$ hadrons discriminate different models and strongly hint at energy loss mechanism beyond those based on perturbation theory. Taking together the RHIC and LHC data, the comparison with models is in favor of the model with strong enhancement of jet quenching in near-$T_c$ matter.

Bose--Einstein Condensation and Thermalization of the Quark Gluon Plasma

In ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, the matter formed shortly after the collision is a dense, out of equilibrium, system of gluons characterized by a semi-hard momentum scale $Q_{\rm s}$. Simple power counting arguments indicate that this system is over-occupied: the gluon occupation number is parametrically large when compared to a system in thermal equilibrium with the same energy density. On short time scales, soft elastic scatterings tend to drive the system towards the formation of a Bose--Einstein condensate that contains a large fraction of the gluons while contributing little to the energy density. The lifetime and existence of this condensate depends on whether inelastic processes, that occur on the same time scale as the elastic ones, preferably increase or decrease the number of gluons. During this overpopulated stage, and all the way to thermalization, the system behaves as a strongly interacting fluid, even though the elementary coupling constant is small. We argue that while complete isotropization may never be reached, the system may yet evolve for a long time with a fixed anisotropy between average longitudinal and transverse momenta.

A study of the correlations between jet quenching observables at RHIC

Focusing on four types of correlation plots, $R_{\rm AA}$ vs. $v_2$, $R_{\rm AA}$ vs. $I_{\rm AA}$, $I_{\rm AA}$ vs. $v_2^{I_{\rm AA}}$ and $v_2$ vs.\ $v_2^{I_{\rm AA}}$, we demonstrate how the centrality dependence of \emph{correlations} between multiple jet quenching observables provide valuable insight into the energy loss mechanism in a quark-gluon plasma. In particular we find that a qualitative energy loss model gives a good description of $R_{\rm AA}$ vs.\ $v_2$ only when we take $ΔE\sim l^3$ and a medium geometry generated by a model of the Color Glass Condensate. This same $ΔE\sim l^3$ model also qualitatively describes the trigger $p_T$ dependence of $R_{\rm AA}$ vs.\ $I_{\rm AA}$ data and makes novel predictions for the centrality dependence for this $R_{\rm AA}$ vs.\ $I_{\rm AA}$ correlation. Current data suggests, albeit with extremely large uncertainty, that $v_2^{I_{\rm AA}}\gg v_2$, a correlation that is difficult to reproduce in current energy loss models.

Chiral magnetic wave at finite baryon density and the electric quadrupole moment of quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions

Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) is a gapless collective excitation of quark-gluon plasma in the presence of external magnetic field that stems from the interplay of Chiral Magnetic (CME) and Chiral Separation Effects (CSE); it is composed by the waves of the electric and chiral charge densities coupled by the axial anomaly. We consider CMW at finite baryon density and find that it induces the electric quadrupole moment of the quark-gluon plasma produced in heavy ion collisions: the "poles" of the produced fireball (pointing outside of the reaction plane) acquire additional positive electric charge, and the "equator" acquires additional negative charge. We point out that this electric quadrupole deformation lifts the degeneracy between the elliptic flows of positive and negative pions leading to $v_2(π^+) < v_2(π^-)$, and estimate the magnitude of the effect.

Azimuthal correlations from transverse momentum conservation and possible local parity violation

We analytically calculate the contribution of transverse momentum conservation to the azimuthal correlations that have been proposed as signals for possible local strong parity violation and recently measured in heavy ion collisions. These corrections are of the order of the inverse of the total final state particle multiplicity and thus are of the same order as the observed signal. The corrections contribute with the same sign to both like-sign and opposite-sign pair correlations. Their dependence on the momentum is in qualitative agreement with the measurements by the STAR collaboration, while the pseudorapidity dependence differs from the data.

Static $\bar Q Q$ Potentials and the Magnetic Component of QCD Plasma near $T_c$

Static quark-anti-quark potential encodes important information on the chromodynamical interaction between color charges, and recent lattice results show its very nontrivial behavior near the deconfinement temperature $T_c$. In this paper we study such potential in the framework of the ``magnetic scenario'' for the near Tc QCD plasma, and particularly focus on the linear part (as quantified by its slope, the tension) in the potential as well as the strong splitting between the free energy and internal energy. By using an analytic ``ellipsoidal bag'' model, we will quantitatively relate the free energy tension to the magnetic condensate density and relate the internal energy tension to the thermal monopole density. By converting the lattice results for static potential into density for thermal monopoles we find the density to be very large around Tc and indicate at quantum coherence, in good agreement with direct lattice calculation of such density. A few important consequences for heavy ion collisions phenomenology will also be discussed.

On the Charge Separation Effect in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

In this paper, we discuss alternative means of measuring the possible presence of local parity violation in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We focus on the phenomenon of charge separation and introduce the charged dipole vector $\hat{Q}^c_1$, which will measure the charge separation on an event-by-event basis. Using Monte Carlo events, we demonstrate the method and its discriminating power. In particular we show that such an analysis will reveal the strength of charge separation effect and its azimuthal correlation with the reaction plane. We further show that our proposed method may be able to distinguish between the actual charge separation effect and effects due to certain two particle correlations. The connection to present measurements based on particle correlations is discussed.

Fluidity and supercriticality of the QCD matter created in relativistic heavy ion collisions

In this paper we discuss the fluidity of the hot and dense QCD matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions in comparison with various other fluids, and in particular suggest its possible supercriticality. After examining the proper way to compare non-relativistic and relativistic fluids from both thermodynamic and hydrodynamic perspectives, we propose a new fluidity measure which shows certain universality for a remarkable diversity of critical fluids. We then demonstrate that a fluid in its supercritical regime has its fluidity considerably enhanced. This may suggest a possible relationship between the seemingly good fluidity of the QCD matter produced in heavy ion collisions at center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=200 \rm AGeV$ and the supercriticality of this matter with respect to the Critical-End-Point on the QCD phase diagram. Based on such observation, we predict an even better fluidity of the matter to be created in heavy ion collisions at LHC energy and the loss of good fluidity at certain lower beam energy. Finally based on our criteria, we analyze the suitability of a hydrodynamic description for the fireball evolution in heavy ion collisions at various energies.

Remarks on possible local parity violation in heavy ion collisions

In this note we discuss some observations concerning the possible local parity violation in heavy ion collisions recently announced by the STAR Collaboration. Our results can be summarized as follows (i) the measured correlations for same charge pairs are mainly in-plain and not out of plane, (ii) if there is a parity violating component it is large and, surprisingly, of the same magnitude as the background, and (iii) the observed dependence of the signal on the transverse momentum (p_t) is consistent with a soft boost in p_t and thus in line with expectations from the proposed chiral magnetic effect.

On Analytic Solutions of (1+3)D Relativistic Ideal Hydrodynamic Equations

In this paper, we find various analytic (1+3)D solutions to relativistic ideal hydrodynamic equations based on embedding of known low-dimensional scaling solutions. We first study a class of flows with 2D Hubble Embedding, for which a single ordinary differential equation for the remaining velocity field can be derived. Using this equation, all solutions with transverse 2D Hubble embedding and power law ansatz for the remaining longitudinal velocity field will be found. Going beyond the power law ansatz, we further find a few solutions with transverse 2D Hubble embedding and nontrivial longitudinal velocity field. Finally we investigate general scaling flows with each component of the velocity fields scaling independently, for which we also find all possible solutions. Possible physical relevance of these solutions will be discussed.

On the Baryonic Density and Susceptibilities in a Holographic Model of QCD

In this paper, we calculate analytically the baryonic density and susceptibilities, which are sensitive probes to the fermionic degrees of freedom, in a holographic model of QCD both in its hot QGP phase and in its cold dense phase. Interesting patterns due to strong coupling dynamics will be shown and valuable lessons for QCD will be discussed.

Exposing the Noncollectivity in Elliptic Flow

We show that backward-forward elliptic anisotropy correlation provides an experimentally accessible observable which distinguishes between collective and non-collective contributions to the observed elliptic anisotropy $v_2$ in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The measurement of this observable will reveal the momentum scale at which collective expansion seizes and where the elliptic anisotropy is dominated by (semi)-hard processes.

Magnetic Scenario for the QCD Fluid at RHIC

We present new developments of the "magnetic scenario" for the QCD Fluid observed at RHIC. The recent lattice data for finite T monopoles are used to pin down the parameters of the magnetic component of quark-gluon plasma: in particular we show how the magnetic density and plasma coupling $Γ_M$ change with $T$. We then discuss one central issue imposed by the heavy ion data: i.e. the extremely short dissipation length in the QCD fluid around $T_c$. We show that the Lorentz trapping effect, present only in a plasma with both electric and magnetic charges and maximal for an equal 50%-50% mixture, is the microscopic mechanism leading to the nearly perfect fluidity.

Angular Dependence of Jet Quenching Indicates Its Strong Enhancement Near the QCD Phase Transition

We study dependence of jet quenching on matter density, using "tomography" of the fireball provided by RHIC data on azimuthal anisotropy $v_2$ of high $p_t$ hadron yield at different centralities. Slicing the fireball into shells with constant (entropy) density, we derive a "layer-wise geometrical limit" $v_2^{max}$ which is indeed above the data $v_2 T_c$. One possible reason for that may be recent indications that the near-$T_c$ region is a magnetic plasma of relatively light color-magnetic monopoles.
