SCR-Auth: Secure Call Receiver Authentication on Smartphones Using Outer Ear Echoes

Receiving calls is one of the most universal functions of smartphones, involving sensitive information and critical operations. Unfortunately, to prioritize convenience, the current call receiving process bypasses smartphone authentication mechanisms (e.g., passwords, fingerprint recognition, and face recognition), leaving a significant security gap. To address this issue, we propose SCR-Auth, a secure call receiver authentication scheme for smartphones that leverages outer ear echoes. It sends inaudible acoustic signals through the earpiece speaker to actively sense the call receiver's outer ear structure and records the resulting echoes using the top microphone. These echoes are then analyzed to extract unique outer ear biometric information for authentication. It operates implicitly, without requiring extra hardware or imposing additional burden. Comprehensive experiments conducted under diverse conditions demonstrate SCR-Auth's effectiveness and security, showing an average balanced accuracy of 96.95% and resilience against potential attacks.

Variable Projection Algorithms: Theoretical Insights and A Novel Approach for Problems with Large Residual

This paper delves into an in-depth exploration of the Variable Projection (VP) algorithm, a powerful tool for solving separable nonlinear optimization problems across multiple domains, including system identification, image processing, and machine learning. We first establish a theoretical framework to examine the effect of the approximate treatment of the coupling relationship among parameters on the local convergence of the VP algorithm and theoretically prove that the Kaufman's VP algorithm can achieve a similar convergence rate as the Golub \& Pereyra's form. These studies fill the gap in the existing convergence theory analysis, and provide a solid foundation for understanding the mechanism of VP algorithm and broadening its application horizons. Furthermore, drawing inspiration from these theoretical revelations, we design a refined VP algorithm for handling separable nonlinear optimization problems characterized by large residual, called VPLR, which boosts the convergence performance by addressing the interdependence of parameters within the separable model and by continually correcting the approximated Hessian matrix to counteract the influence of large residual during the iterative process. The effectiveness of this refined algorithm is corroborated through numerical experimentation.

SFADNet: Spatio-temporal Fused Graph based on Attention Decoupling Network for Traffic Prediction

In recent years, traffic flow prediction has played a crucial role in the management of intelligent transportation systems. However, traditional prediction methods are often limited by static spatial modeling, making it difficult to accurately capture the dynamic and complex relationships between time and space, thereby affecting prediction accuracy. This paper proposes an innovative traffic flow prediction network, SFADNet, which categorizes traffic flow into multiple traffic patterns based on temporal and spatial feature matrices. For each pattern, we construct an independent adaptive spatio-temporal fusion graph based on a cross-attention mechanism, employing residual graph convolution modules and time series modules to better capture dynamic spatio-temporal relationships under different fine-grained traffic patterns. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that SFADNet outperforms current state-of-the-art baselines across four large-scale datasets.

LLMs for Knowledge Graph Construction and Reasoning: Recent Capabilities and Future Opportunities

This paper presents an exhaustive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of Large Language Models (LLMs) for Knowledge Graph (KG) construction and reasoning. We engage in experiments across eight diverse datasets, focusing on four representative tasks encompassing entity and relation extraction, event extraction, link prediction, and question-answering, thereby thoroughly exploring LLMs' performance in the domain of construction and inference. Empirically, our findings suggest that LLMs, represented by GPT-4, are more suited as inference assistants rather than few-shot information extractors. Specifically, while GPT-4 exhibits good performance in tasks related to KG construction, it excels further in reasoning tasks, surpassing fine-tuned models in certain cases. Moreover, our investigation extends to the potential generalization ability of LLMs for information extraction, leading to the proposition of a Virtual Knowledge Extraction task and the development of the corresponding VINE dataset. Based on these empirical findings, we further propose AutoKG, a multi-agent-based approach employing LLMs and external sources for KG construction and reasoning. We anticipate that this research can provide invaluable insights for future undertakings in the field of knowledge graphs. The code and datasets are in https://github.com/zjunlp/AutoKG.

DynaShard: Secure and Adaptive Blockchain Sharding Protocol with Hybrid Consensus and Dynamic Shard Management

Blockchain sharding has emerged as a promising solution to the scalability challenges in traditional blockchain systems by partitioning the network into smaller, manageable subsets called shards. Despite its potential, existing sharding solutions face significant limitations in handling dynamic workloads, ensuring secure cross-shard transactions, and maintaining system integrity. To address these gaps, we propose DynaShard, a dynamic and secure cross-shard transaction processing mechanism designed to enhance blockchain sharding efficiency and security. DynaShard combines adaptive shard management, a hybrid consensus approach, plus an efficient state synchronization and dispute resolution protocol. Our performance evaluation, conducted using a robust experimental setup with real-world network conditions and transaction workloads, demonstrates DynaShard's superior throughput, reduced latency, and improved shard utilization compared to the FTBS method. Specifically, DynaShard achieves up to a 42.6% reduction in latency and a 78.77% improvement in shard utilization under high transaction volumes and varying cross-shard transaction ratios. These results highlight DynaShard's ability to outperform state-of-the-art sharding methods, ensuring scalable and resilient blockchain systems. We believe that DynaShard's innovative approach will significantly impact future developments in blockchain technology, paving the way for more efficient and secure distributed systems.

HeteroSample: Meta-path Guided Sampling for Heterogeneous Graph Representation Learning

The rapid expansion of Internet of Things (IoT) has resulted in vast, heterogeneous graphs that capture complex interactions among devices, sensors, and systems. Efficient analysis of these graphs is critical for deriving insights in IoT scenarios such as smart cities, industrial IoT, and intelligent transportation systems. However, the scale and diversity of IoT-generated data present significant challenges, and existing methods often struggle with preserving the structural integrity and semantic richness of these complex graphs. Many current approaches fail to maintain the balance between computational efficiency and the quality of the insights generated, leading to potential loss of critical information necessary for accurate decision-making in IoT applications. We introduce HeteroSample, a novel sampling method designed to address these challenges by preserving the structural integrity, node and edge type distributions, and semantic patterns of IoT-related graphs. HeteroSample works by incorporating the novel top-leader selection, balanced neighborhood expansion, and meta-path guided sampling strategies. The key idea is to leverage the inherent heterogeneous structure and semantic relationships encoded by meta-paths to guide the sampling process. This approach ensures that the resulting subgraphs are representative of the original data while significantly reducing computational overhead. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HeteroSample outperforms state-of-the-art methods, achieving up to 15% higher F1 scores in tasks such as link prediction and node classification, while reducing runtime by 20%.These advantages make HeteroSample a transformative tool for scalable and accurate IoT applications, enabling more effective and efficient analysis of complex IoT systems, ultimately driving advancements in smart cities, industrial IoT, and beyond.

Semantic Sleuth: Identifying Ponzi Contracts via Large Language Models

Smart contracts, self-executing agreements directly encoded in code, are fundamental to blockchain technology, especially in decentralized finance (DeFi) and Web3. However, the rise of Ponzi schemes in smart contracts poses significant risks, leading to substantial financial losses and eroding trust in blockchain systems. Existing detection methods, such as PonziGuard, depend on large amounts of labeled data and struggle to identify unseen Ponzi schemes, limiting their reliability and generalizability. In contrast, we introduce PonziSleuth, the first LLM-driven approach for detecting Ponzi smart contracts, which requires no labeled training data. PonziSleuth utilizes advanced language understanding capabilities of LLMs to analyze smart contract source code through a novel two-step zero-shot chain-of-thought prompting technique. Our extensive evaluation on benchmark datasets and real-world contracts demonstrates that PonziSleuth delivers comparable, and often superior, performance without the extensive data requirements, achieving a balanced detection accuracy of 96.06% with GPT-3.5-turbo, 93.91% with LLAMA3, and 94.27% with Mistral. In real-world detection, PonziSleuth successfully identified 15 new Ponzi schemes from 4,597 contracts verified by Etherscan in March 2024, with a false negative rate of 0% and a false positive rate of 0.29%. These results highlight PonziSleuth's capability to detect diverse and novel Ponzi schemes, marking a significant advancement in leveraging LLMs for enhancing blockchain security and mitigating financial scams.

Federated Learning and Free-riding in a Competitive Market

Federated learning (FL) is a collaborative technique for training large-scale models while protecting user data privacy. Despite its substantial benefits, the free-riding behavior raises a major challenge for the formation of FL, especially in competitive markets. Our paper explores this under-explored issue on how the free-riding behavior in a competitive market affects firms' incentives to form FL. Competing firms can improve technologies through forming FL to increase the performance of their products, which in turn, affects consumers' product selection and market size. The key complication is whether the free-riding behavior discourages information contribution by participating firms and results in the decomposition of FL, and even free riding does not discourage information contribution, this does not necessarily mean that a firm wants to form FL in a competitive market because free riding may reshape the competition positions of each participating firm and thus forming FL may not be profitable. We build a parsimonious game theoretical model that captures these interactions and our analyses show several new findings. First, even in the presence of the free-riding behavior, competing firms under FL find it optimal to contribute all its available information. Second, the firm with less amount of information always finds it profitable to free ride; whether its rival (with more amount of information) have an incentive to form FL only when the level of competition or when the gap in information volume is not high. Third, when FL is formed, there exists an "All-Win" situation in which all stakeholders (participating firms, consumers, and social planner) benefit. Last, subsidizing by the free-riding firm can align its rival's incentive to form FL only when the level of competition is intermediate.

Measuring the Diffuse Interstellar Bands at 5780, 5797, and 6614 Å in Low-Resolution Spectra of Cool Stars from LAMOST

We attempt to measure the DIBs $λ$5780, $λ$5797 and $λ$6614 in over two million low-resolution spectra of cool stars from LAMOST. Based on the DIB measurements, the correlation between DIBs and extinction, the kinematics of DIBs, and the Galactic distribution of DIBs are reviewed and investigated from the perspective of statistics. A pipeline is developed to measure the DIBs $λ$5780, $λ$5797 and $λ$6614 in the LAMOST low-resolution spectra. We obtain the DIB measurements of spectra of late-type stars from LAMOST, and screen out 176,831, 13,473 and 110,152 high-quality (HQ) measurements of the DIBs $λ$5780, $λ$5797 and $λ$6614, respectively, corresponding to 142,074, 11,480 and 85,301 unique sources. Utilizing these HQ measurements, we present the Galactic maps of the DIBs $λ$5780 and $λ$6614 in the northern sky for the first time. The central wavelengths of the DIBs $λ$5780, $λ$5797 and $λ$6614 in air are determined to be 5780.48 $\pm$ 0.01, 5796.94 $\pm$ 0.02 and 6613.64 $\pm$ 0.01 Å, respectively, based on their kinematics. The equivalent widths of these three DIBs per unit extinction are statistically fitted to be 0.565, 0.176 and 0.256 Å/mag. As a part of our work, three catalogs of the HQ measurements for the DIBs $λ$5780, $λ$5797 and $λ$6614 are provided online. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest number of measurements of these three DIBs to date. It is also the first time that the Galactic maps of the DIBs $λ$5780 and $λ$6614 in the northern hemisphere are presented, and the central wavelengths of the DIBs $λ$5780, $λ$5797 and $λ$6614 are estimated from the kinematics.

Sealed-bid Auctions on Blockchain with Timed Commitment Outsourcing

Sealed-bid auctions play a crucial role in blockchain ecosystems. Previous works introduced viable blockchain sealed-bid auction protocols, leveraging timed commitments for bid encryption. However, a crucial challenge remains unresolved in these works: Who should bear the cost of decrypting these timed commitments? This work introduces a timed commitment outsourcing market as a solution to the aforementioned challenge. We first introduce an aggregation scheme for timed commitments, which combines all bidders' timed commitments into one while ensuring security and correctness and allowing a varying number of bidders. Next, we remodel the utility of auctioneers and timed commitment solvers, developing a new timed commitment competition mechanism and combining it with the sealed-bid auction to form a two-sided market. The protocol includes bid commitment collection, timed commitment solving, and payment. Through game-theoretical analysis, we prove that our protocol satisfies Dominant Strategy Incentive Compatibility (DSIC) for bidders, Bayesian Incentive Compatibility (BIC) for solvers, and achieves optimal revenue for the auctioneer among a large class of mechanisms. Finally, we prove that no mechanism can achieve positive expected revenue for the auctioneer while satisfying DSIC and Individual Rationality (IR) for both bidders and solvers.

Iterative Optimization Annotation Pipeline and ALSS-YOLO-Seg for Efficient Banana Plantation Segmentation in UAV Imagery

Precise segmentation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-captured images plays a vital role in tasks such as crop yield estimation and plant health assessment in banana plantations. By identifying and classifying planted areas, crop area can be calculated, which is indispensable for accurate yield predictions. However, segmenting banana plantation scenes requires a substantial amount of annotated data, and manual labeling of these images is both time-consuming and labor-intensive, limiting the development of large-scale datasets. Furthermore, challenges such as changing target sizes, complex ground backgrounds, limited computational resources, and correct identification of crop categories make segmentation even more difficult. To address these issues, we proposed a comprehensive solution. Firstly, we designed an iterative optimization annotation pipeline leveraging SAM2's zero-shot capabilities to generate high-quality segmentation annotations, thereby reducing the cost and time associated with data annotation significantly. Secondly, we developed ALSS-YOLO-Seg, an efficient lightweight segmentation model optimized for UAV imagery. The model's backbone includes an Adaptive Lightweight Channel Splitting and Shuffling (ALSS) module to improve information exchange between channels and optimize feature extraction, aiding accurate crop identification. Additionally, a Multi-Scale Channel Attention (MSCA) module combines multi-scale feature extraction with channel attention to tackle challenges of varying target sizes and complex ground backgrounds.

ToolBeHonest: A Multi-level Hallucination Diagnostic Benchmark for Tool-Augmented Large Language Models

Tool-augmented large language models (LLMs) are rapidly being integrated into real-world applications. Due to the lack of benchmarks, the community has yet to fully understand the hallucination issues within these models. To address this challenge, we introduce a comprehensive diagnostic benchmark, ToolBH. Specifically, we assess the LLM's hallucinations through two perspectives: depth and breadth. In terms of depth, we propose a multi-level diagnostic process, including (1) solvability detection, (2) solution planning, and (3) missing-tool analysis. For breadth, we consider three scenarios based on the characteristics of the toolset: missing necessary tools, potential tools, and limited functionality tools. Furthermore, we developed seven tasks and collected 700 evaluation samples through multiple rounds of manual annotation. The results show the significant challenges presented by the ToolBH benchmark. The current advanced models Gemini-1.5-Pro and GPT-4o only achieve total scores of 45.3 and 37.0, respectively, on a scale of 100. In this benchmark, larger model parameters do not guarantee better performance; the training data and response strategies also play crucial roles in tool-enhanced LLM scenarios. Our diagnostic analysis indicates that the primary reason for model errors lies in assessing task solvability. Additionally, open-weight models suffer from performance drops with verbose replies, whereas proprietary models excel with longer reasoning.
