Towards Delay-Tolerant Flexible Data Access Control for Smart Grid with Renewable Energy Resources

In the Smart Grid with Renewable Energy Resources (RERs), the Residential Units (RUs) with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are considered to be both power consumers and suppliers. Specifically, RUs with excessive renewable generations can trade with the utility in deficit of power supplies for mutual benefits. It causes two challenging issues. First, the trading data of RUs is quite sensitive, which should be only accessed by authorized users with fine-grained policies. Second, the behaviors of the RUs to generate trading data are spontaneous and unpredictable, then the problem is how to guarantee system efficiency and delay tolerance simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a delay-tolerant flexible data access control scheme based on Key Policy Attribute Based Encryption (KP-ABE) for Smart Grid with Renewable Energy Resources (RERs). We adopt the secret sharing scheme (SSS) to realize a flexible access control with encryption delay tolerance. Furthermore, there is no central trusted server to perform the encryption/decryption. We reduce the computation cost on RUs and operators via a semi-trusted model. The analysis shows that the proposed scheme can meet the data security requirement of the Smart Grid with RERs, and it also has less cost compared with other popular models.

An Efficient Encryption Scheme with Verifiable Outsourced Decryption in Mobile Cloud Computing

With the increasing number of mobile applications and the popularity of cloud computing, the combination of these two techniques that named mobile cloud computing (MCC) attracts great attention in recent years. A promising public key encryption scheme, Attribute-Based Encryption (ABE), especially the Ciphertext Policy Attribute-Based Encryption (CP-ABE), has been used for realizing fine-grained access control on encrypted data stored in MCC. However, the computational overhead of encryption and decryption grow with the complexity of the access policy. Thus, maintaining data security as well as efficiency of data processing in MCC are important and challenging issues. In this paper, we propose an efficient encryption method based on CP-ABE, which can lower the overhead on data owners. To further reduce the decryption overhead on data receivers, we additionally propose a verifiable outsourced decryption scheme. By security analysis and performance evaluation, the proposed scheme is proved to be secure as well as efficient.

A Low-latency Secure Data Outsourcing Scheme for Cloud-WSN

With the support of cloud computing, large quantities of data collected from various WSN applications can be managed efficiently. However, maintaining data security and efficiency of data processing in cloud-WSN (C-WSN) are important and challenging issues. In this paper, we present an efficient data outsourcing scheme based on CP-ABE, which can not only guarantee secure data access, but also reduce overall data processing time. In our proposed scheme, a large file is divided into several data blocks by data owner (DO) firstly. Then, the data blocks are encrypted and transferred to the cloud server in parallel. For data receiver (DR), data decryption and data transmission is also processed in parallel. In addition, data integrity can be checked by DR without any master key components. The security analysis shows that the proposed scheme can meet the security requirement of C-WSN. By performance evaluation, it shows that our scheme can dramatically improve data processing efficiency compared to the traditional CP-ABE method.

Hybrid-MST: A Hybrid Active Sampling Strategy for Pairwise Preference Aggregation

In this paper we present a hybrid active sampling strategy for pairwise preference aggregation, which aims at recovering the underlying rating of the test candidates from sparse and noisy pairwise labelling. Our method employs Bayesian optimization framework and Bradley-Terry model to construct the utility function, then to obtain the Expected Information Gain (EIG) of each pair. For computational efficiency, Gaussian-Hermite quadrature is used for estimation of EIG. In this work, a hybrid active sampling strategy is proposed, either using Global Maximum (GM) EIG sampling or Minimum Spanning Tree (MST) sampling in each trial, which is determined by the test budget. The proposed method has been validated on both simulated and real-world datasets, where it shows higher preference aggregation ability than the state-of-the-art methods.

Hubble Space Telescope Observations of 3200 Phaethon At Closest Approach

We present Hubble Space Telescope observations of the active asteroid (and Geminid stream parent) 3200 Phaethon when at its closest approach to Earth (separation 0.07 AU) in 2017 December. Images were recorded within $\sim$1\degr~of the orbital plane, providing extra sensitivity to low surface brightness caused by scattering from a large-particle trail. We placed an upper limit to the apparent surface brightness of such a trail at 27.2 magnitudes arcsecond$^{-2}$, corresponding to an in-plane optical depth $\le 3\times10^{-9}$. No co-moving sources brighter than absolute magnitude 26.3, corresponding to circular equivalent radius $\sim$12 m (albedo 0.12 assumed), were detected. Phaethon is too hot for near-surface ice to survive. We briefly consider the thermodynamic stability of deeply-buried ice, finding that its survival would require either a very small (regolith-like) thermal diffusivity ($< 10^{-8}$ m$^2$ s$^{-1}$), or the unexpectedly recent injection of Phaethon (timescale $\lesssim$ 10$^6$ yr) into its present orbit, or both.

A Systematic Study of Hale and Anti-Hale Sunspot Physical Parameters

We present a systematic study of sunspot physical parameters using full disk magnetograms from MDI/SoHO and HMI/SDO. Our aim is to use uniform datasets and analysis procedures to characterize the sunspots, paying particular attention to the differences and similarities between "Hale" and "anti-Hale" spots. Included are measurements of the magnetic tilt angles, areas, fluxes and polarity pole separations for 4385 sunspot groups in Cycles 23 and 24 each measured, on average, at $\sim$66 epochs centered on meridian-crossing. The sunspots are classified as either "Hale" or "anti-Hale", depending on whether their polarities align or anti-align with Hale's hemispheric polarity rule. We find that (1) The "anti-Hale" sunspots constitute a fraction ($8.1\pm0.4$)\% of all sunspots, and this fraction is the same in both hemispheres and cycles, (2) "Hale" sunspots obey Joy's law in both hemispheres and cycles but "anti-Hale" sunspots do not. Three equivalent forms of Joy's law are derived, $\sinγ=(0.38\pm0.05)\sinϕ$, $γ=(0.39\pm0.06)ϕ$, and $γ=(23.80\pm3.51)\sinϕ$, where $γ$ is the tilt angle and $ϕ$ is the heliospheric latitude, (3) The average Hale sunspot tilt angle is $\overlineγ = 5.49^\circ\pm0.09$, (4) The tilt angles, magnetic fluxes and pole separations of sunspots are interrelated, with larger fluxes correlated with larger pole separations and smaller tilt angles. We present empirical relations between these quantities. Cycle 24 is a much weaker cycle than Cycle 23 in sunspot numbers, cumulative magnetic flux, and average sunspot magnetic flux. The "anti-Hale" sunspots are also much weaker than "Hale" sunspots in those parameters, but they share similar magnetic flux distributions and average latitudes. We characterize the two populations, and aim to shed light on the origin of "anti-Hale" sunspots.

Topic Memory Networks for Short Text Classification

Many classification models work poorly on short texts due to data sparsity. To address this issue, we propose topic memory networks for short text classification with a novel topic memory mechanism to encode latent topic representations indicative of class labels. Different from most prior work that focuses on extending features with external knowledge or pre-trained topics, our model jointly explores topic inference and text classification with memory networks in an end-to-end manner. Experimental results on four benchmark datasets show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art models on short text classification, meanwhile generates coherent topics.

A Joint Model of Conversational Discourse and Latent Topics on Microblogs

Conventional topic models are ineffective for topic extraction from microblog messages, because the data sparseness exhibited in short messages lacking structure and contexts results in poor message-level word co-occurrence patterns. To address this issue, we organize microblog messages as conversation trees based on their reposting and replying relations, and propose an unsupervised model that jointly learns word distributions to represent: 1) different roles of conversational discourse, 2) various latent topics in reflecting content information. By explicitly distinguishing the probabilities of messages with varying discourse roles in containing topical words, our model is able to discover clusters of discourse words that are indicative of topical content. In an automatic evaluation on large-scale microblog corpora, our joint model yields topics with better coherence scores than competitive topic models from previous studies. Qualitative analysis on model outputs indicates that our model induces meaningful representations for both discourse and topics. We further present an empirical study on microblog summarization based on the outputs of our joint model. The results show that the jointly modeled discourse and topic representations can effectively indicate summary-worthy content in microblog conversations.

A Unified Stochastic Particle Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook Method for Multiscale Gas Flows

The stochastic particle method based on Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook (BGK) or ellipsoidal statistical BGK (ESBGK) model approximates the pairwise collisions in the Boltzmann equation using a relaxation process. Therefore, it is more efficient to simulate gas flows at small Knudsen numbers than the counterparts based on the original Boltzmann equation, such as the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. However, the traditional stochastic particle BGK method decouples the molecular motions and collisions in analogy to the DSMC method, and hence its transport properties deviate from physical values as the time step increases. This defect significantly affects its computational accuracy and efficiency for the simulation of multiscale flows, especially when the transport processes in the continuum regime is important. In the present paper, we propose a unified stochastic particle ESBGK (USP-ESBGK) method by combining the molecular convection and collision effects. In the continuum regime, the proposed method can be applied using large temporal-spatial discretization and approaches to the Navier-Stokes solutions accurately. Furthermore, it is capable to simulate both the small scale non-equilibrium flows and large scale continuum flows within a unified framework efficiently and accurately. The applications of USP-ESBGK method to a variety of benchmark problems, including Couette flow, thermal Couette flow, Poiseuille flow, Sod tube flow, cavity flow, and flow through a slit, demonstrated that it is a promising tool to simulate multiscale gas flows ranging from rarefied to continuum regime.

Two-stage iterative Procrustes match algorithm and its application for VQ-based speaker verification

In the past decades, Vector Quantization (VQ) model has been very popular across different pattern recognition areas, especially for feature-based tasks. However, the classification or regression performance of VQ-based systems always confronts the feature mismatch problem, which will heavily affect the performance of them. In this paper, we propose a two-stage iterative Procrustes algorithm (TIPM) to address the feature mismatch problem for VQ-based applications. At the first stage, the algorithm will remove mismatched feature vector pairs for a pair of input feature sets. Then, the second stage will collect those correct matched feature pairs that were discarded during the first stage. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed TIPM algorithm, speaker verification is used as the case study in this paper. The experiments were conducted on the TIMIT database and the results show that TIPM can improve VQ-based speaker verification performance clean condition and all noisy conditions.

The graphs with all but two eigenvalues equal to $2$ or $-1$

In this paper, all graphs whose adjacency matrix has at most two eigenvalues (multiplicities included) different from $2$ and $-1$ are determined. These graphs conclude a class of generalized friendship graphs $F_{t,r,k}, $ which is the graph of $k$ copies of the complete graph $K_t$ meeting in common $r$ vertices such that $t-r=3.$ Which of these graphs are determined by its spectrum is are also obtained.

Stochastic collocation methods via minimization of Transformed $L_1$ penalty

We study the properties of sparse reconstruction of transformed $\ell_1$ (TL1) minimization and present improved theoretical results about the recoverability and the accuracy of this reconstruction from undersampled measurements. We then combine this method with the stochastic collocation approach to identify the coefficients of sparse orthogonal polynomial expansions for uncertainty quantification. In order to implement the TL1 minimization, we use the DCA-TL1 algorithm which was introduced by Zhang and Xin. In particular, when recover non-sparse functions, we adopt an adaptive DCA-TL1 method to guarantee the sparest solutions. Various numerical examples, including sparse polynomial functions recovery and non-sparse analytical functions recovery are presented to demonstrate the recoverability and efficiency of this novel method and its potential for problems of practical interests.

Theoretical investigation of novel electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of metallic hydrogen at 495 GPa

Atomic metallic hydrogen has been produced in the laboratory at high pressure and low temperature, prompting further investigations of its different properties. However, purely experimental approaches are infeasible because of the extreme requirements in producing and preserving the metastable phase. Here we perform a systematic investigation of the electronic, optical, mechanical and thermal properties of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen at 495 GPa using first-principles calculations. We calculate the electronic structure and dielectric function to verify the metallic behaviour of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen. The calculated total plasma frequency from both intraband and interband transitions, 33.40 eV, agrees well with the experimental result. The mechanical properties including elastic stability and sound velocity are also investigated. The mechanical stability of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is limited by shear modulus other than bulk modulus, and the high Young's modulus indicates that $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is a stiff material. After investigating the lattice vibrational properties, we study the thermodynamical properties and lattice anharmonicity to understand thermal behaviours in metallic hydrogen. Finally, the lattice thermal conductivity of $I4_1/amd$ hydrogen is calculated to be 194.72 W/mK and 172.96 W/mK along the $x$ and $z$ directions, respectively. Using metallic hydrogen as an example, we demonstrate that first-principles calculations can be a game-changing solution to understand a variety of material properties in extreme conditions.

A Manually Annotated Chinese Corpus for Non-task-oriented Dialogue Systems

This paper presents a large-scale corpus for non-task-oriented dialogue response selection, which contains over 27K distinct prompts more than 82K responses collected from social media. To annotate this corpus, we define a 5-grade rating scheme: bad, mediocre, acceptable, good, and excellent, according to the relevance, coherence, informativeness, interestingness, and the potential to move a conversation forward. To test the validity and usefulness of the produced corpus, we compare various unsupervised and supervised models for response selection. Experimental results confirm that the proposed corpus is helpful in training response selection models.

Active User Detection of Uplink Grant-Free SCMA in Frequency Selective Channel

Massive machine type communication (mMTC) is one of the three fifth generation mobile networking (5G) key usage scenarios, which is characterized by a very large number of connected devices typically transmitting a relatively low volume of non-delay sensitive data. To support the mMTC communication, an uplink (UL) grant-free sparse code multiple access (SCMA) system has been proposed. In this system, the knowledge of user equipments' (UEs') status should be obtained before decoding the data by a message passing algorithm (MPA). An existing solution is to use the compressive sensing (CS) theory to detect active UEs under the assumed condition of flat fading channel. But the assumed condition is not suitable for the frequency selective channel and will decrease the accuracy of active UEs detection. This paper proposes a new simple module named refined active UE detector (RAUD), which is based on frequency selective channel gain analyzing. By making full use of the channel gain and analyzing the difference between characteristic values of the two status of UEs, RAUD module can enhance the active UEs detection accuracy. Meanwhile, the addition of the proposed module has a negligible effect on the complexity of UL grant-free SCMA receiver.

Investigation of the near-threshold cluster resonance in $^{14}\rm{C}$

An experiment for $p(^{14}\rm{C}$,$^{14}\rm{C}^{*}\rightarrow^{10}\rm{Be}+α)\mathit{p}$ inelastic excitation and decay was performed in inverse kinematics at a beam energy of 25.3 MeV/u. A series of $^{14}\rm{C}$ excited states, including a new one at 18.3(1) MeV, were observed which decay to various states of the final nucleus of $^{10}\rm{Be}$. A specially designed telescope-system, installed around the zero degree, played an essential role in detecting the resonant states near the $α$-separation threshold. A state at 14.1(1) MeV is clearly identified, being consistent with the predicted band-head of the molecular rotational band characterized by the $π$-bond linear-chain-configuration. Further clarification of the properties of this exotic state is suggested by using appropriate reaction tools.

The Nucleus of Active Asteroid 311P/(2013 P5) PANSTARRS

The unique inner-belt asteroid 311P/PANSTARRS (formerly P/2013 P5) is notable for its sporadic, comet-like ejection of dust in nine distinct epochs spread over $\sim$250 days in 2013. This curious behavior has been interpreted as the product of localized, equator-ward landsliding from the surface of an asteroid rotating at the brink of instability. We obtained new Hubble Space Telescope observations to directly measure the nucleus and to search for evidence of its rapid rotation. However, instead of providing photometric evidence for rapid nucleus rotation, our data set a lower limit to the lightcurve period, $P \ge$ 5.4 hour. The dominant feature of the lightcurve is a V-shaped minimum, $\sim$0.3 magnitudes deep, that is suggestive of an eclipsing binary. Under this interpretation, the time-series data are consistent with a secondary/primary mass ratio, $m_s/m_p \sim$ 1:6, a ratio of separation/primary radius, $r/r_p \sim$ 4 and an orbit period $\sim$0.8 days. These properties lie within the range of other asteroid binaries that are thought to be formed by rotational breakup. While the lightcurve period is long, centripetal dust ejection is still possible if one or both components rotates rapidly ($\lesssim$ 2 hour) and has a small lightcurve variation because of azimuthal symmetry. Indeed, radar observations of asteroids in critical rotation reveal "muffin-shaped" morphologies which are closely azimuthally symmetric and which show minimal lightcurves. Our data are consistent with 311P being a close binary in which one or both components rotates near the centripetal limit. The mass loss in 2013 suggests that breakup occurred recently and could even be on-going. A search for fragments that might have been recently ejected beyond the Hill sphere reveals none larger than effective radius $r_e \sim$ 10 m.

Electronic, optical and transport properties of van der Waals Transition-metal Dichalcogenides Heterostructures: A First-principle Study

Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) MX$_2$ (M = Mo, W; X= S, Se, Te) possess unique properties and novel applications. In this work, we perform first-principles calculations on the van der Waals (vdW) stacked MX$_2$ heterostructures to investigate their electronic, optical and transport properties systematically. We perform the so-called Anderson's rule to classify the heterostructures by providing the scheme of the construction of energy band diagrams for the heterostructure consisting of two semiconductor materials. For most of the MX$_2$ heterostructures, the conduction band maximum (CBM) and valence band minimum (VBM) reside in two separate semiconductors, forming type II band structure, thus the electron-holes pairs are spatially separated. We also find strong interlayer coupling at $Γ$ point after forming MX$_2$ heterostructures, even leading to the indirect band gap. While the band structure near $K$ point remain as the independent monolayer. The carrier mobilities of MX$_2$ heterostructures depend on three decisive factors, elastic modulus, effective mass and deformation potential constant, which are discussed and contrasted with those of monolayer MX$_2$, respectively.
