Liquid phase mass production of air-stable black phosphorus/phospholipids nanocomposite with ultralow tunneling barrier

Few-layer black phosphorus (FLBP), a recently discovered two-dimensional semiconductor, has attracted substantial attention in the scientific and technical communities due to its great potential in electronic and optoelectronic applications. However, reactivity of FLBP flakes with ambient species limits its direct applications. Among various methods to passivate FLBP in ambient environment, nanocomposites mixing FLBP flakes with stable matrix may be one of the most promising approaches for industry applications. Here, we report a simple one-step procedure to mass produce air-stable FLBP/phospholipids nanocomposite in liquid phase. The resultant nanocomposite is found to have ultralow tunneling barrier for charge carriers which can be described by an Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping mechanism. Devices made from such mass-produced FLBP/phospholipids nanocomposite show highly stable electrical conductivity and opto-electrical response in ambient conditions, indicating its promising applications in both electronic and optoelectronic applications. This method could also be generalized to the mass production of nanocomposites consisting of other air-sensitive two-dimensional materials, such as FeSe, NbSe2, WTe2, etc.

Long-term Blood Pressure Prediction with Deep Recurrent Neural Networks

Existing methods for arterial blood pressure (BP) estimation directly map the input physiological signals to output BP values without explicitly modeling the underlying temporal dependencies in BP dynamics. As a result, these models suffer from accuracy decay over a long time and thus require frequent calibration. In this work, we address this issue by formulating BP estimation as a sequence prediction problem in which both the input and target are temporal sequences. We propose a novel deep recurrent neural network (RNN) consisting of multilayered Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks, which are incorporated with (1) a bidirectional structure to access larger-scale context information of input sequence, and (2) residual connections to allow gradients in deep RNN to propagate more effectively. The proposed deep RNN model was tested on a static BP dataset, and it achieved root mean square error (RMSE) of 3.90 and 2.66 mmHg for systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) prediction respectively, surpassing the accuracy of traditional BP prediction models. On a multi-day BP dataset, the deep RNN achieved RMSE of 3.84, 5.25, 5.80 and 5.81 mmHg for the 1st day, 2nd day, 4th day and 6th month after the 1st day SBP prediction, and 1.80, 4.78, 5.0, 5.21 mmHg for corresponding DBP prediction, respectively, which outperforms all previous models with notable improvement. The experimental results suggest that modeling the temporal dependencies in BP dynamics significantly improves the long-term BP prediction accuracy.

Gravitational Waves from Oscillons with Cuspy Potentials

We study the production of gravitational waves during oscillations of the inflaton around the minimum of a cuspy potential after inflation. We find that a cusp in the potential can trigger copious oscillon formation, which sources a characteristic energy spectrum of gravitational waves with double peaks. The discovery of such a double-peak spectrum could test the underlying inflationary physics.

Investigation on the performance of a ducted propeller in oblique flow

In this study, the ducted propeller has been numerically investigated under oblique flow, which is crucial and challenging for the design and safe operation of thruster driven vessel and dynamic positioning (DP) system. A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) model has been first evaluated in the quasi-steady investigation on a single ducted propeller operating in open water condition, and then a hybrid RANS/LES model is adapted for the transient sliding mesh computations. A representative test geometry considered here is a marine model thruster which is discretized with structured hexahedral cells, and the gap between the blade tip and nozzle is carefully meshed to capture the flow dynamics. The computational results are assessed by a systematic grid convergence study and compared with the available experimental data. As a part of novel contribution, multiple incidence angles from $15^\circ$ to $60^\circ$ have been analyzed with varying advance coefficients. The main emphasis has been placed on the hydrodynamic loads that act on the propeller blades and nozzle as well as their variation with different configurations. The results reveal that while the nozzle absorbs much effort from the oblique flow, the imbalance between blades at different positions is still noticeable. Such unbalance flow dynamics on the blades and the nozzle has a direct implication on the variation of thrust and torque of a marine thruster.

3D Printing of Flexible Room-Temperature Liquid Metal Battery

The entirely soft and transformable room-temperature liquid metal battery based on 3D hybrid printing was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Liquid metal gallium and conductive gel were employed as the negative and positive electrode material, respectively. The discharge process of batteries with different structure, single-cell and multi-cell, were clarified. The results indicated that the obtained battery possessed rather stable and persisted discharge property, but the multi-cell battery presented stair-step decrease overtime. SEM and EDS images were obtained to evaluate the morphological change of the electrode during the discharge process, and the liquid metal was found to be easily exposed and active according to the solubility of the alkaline electrolyte to oxidized gallium. The successful 3D hybrid printing allowed different polymers, including PLA, ABS and TPU, to be precisely patterned in any required battery body structures, with liquid electrodes in appropriate specified positions. The flexibility and practicability of this new generation battery was illustrated through working devices. The present soft battery offers important power supply for future wearable and epidermal electronics.

Transformable Soft Quantum Device based on Liquid Metals with Sandwiched Liquid Junctions

Quantum tunneling effect has been an important issue in both fundamental science and practical applications. Classical quantum tunneling devices are generally rigid in structures which may encounter technical difficulties during fabrication, functional tuning and shape adapting. Here through introducing the room-temperature liquid metals as two conductive electrodes and a soft even liquid insulating layer sandwiched between them, we proposed a conceptually innovative all-soft or liquid quantum device which would help realize a couple of unconventional quantum capabilities such as flexibility, deformability, transformability, and reconfigurability, etc. which may not be easily offered by a rigid quantum device. Representative structural configurations to make such transformable quantum devices via sandwiching various liquid metal-insulating layer-liquid metal (LM-IL-LM) components are suggested. The feasibility for making such an all-soft quantum device is interpreted through experimental evidences and theoretical evaluations. Potential future applications of the proposed devices in a group of emerging fields including intelligent quantum systems and quantum computing are prospected.

Control-enhanced multiparameter quantum estimation

Most studies in multiparameter estimation assume the dynamics is fixed and focus on identifying the optimal probe state and the optimal measurements. In practice, however, controls are usually available to alter the dynamics, which provides another degree of freedom. In this paper we employ optimal control methods, particularly the gradient ascent pulse engineering (GRAPE), to design optimal controls for the improvement of the precision limit in multiparameter estimation. We show that the controlled schemes not only capable to provide a higher precision limit, but also have a higher stability to the inaccuracy of the time point performing the measurements. This high time stability will benefit the practical metrology where it is hard to perform the measurement at a very accurate time point due to the response time of the measurement apparatus.

Gas Eruption Phenomenon Happening from Ga-In Alloy in Electrolyte

We report a gas eruption phenomenon caused by electrolysis of liquid Ga-In alloy in an electrolyte, especially NaOH solution. A volcanic eruption-like blowout of gas occurred from the orifice on the alloy surface. In addition to gas plume, large gas bubbles were also generated and the total gas yield increased as In ratio was increased. It is found that destructiveness of the passivation layer on the Ga-In alloy is critical to gas generation. The mechanism of gas eruption can be ascribed to a galvanic interaction happens owing to passivation film and alloy with different activity connected as electrode in electrolyte. Further investigation demonstrated that the lattice of the film expands because of the incorporation of indium, which brings about the decrease in band gap and finally enhances more gas generation. These findings regain the basic understanding of room temperature liquid metal inside electrolyte.

Pressure-induced melting of magnetic order and emergence of new quantum state in alpha-RuCl3

Here we report the observation of pressure-induced melting of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and emergence of a new quantum state in the honeycomb-lattice halide alpha-RuCl3, a candidate compound in the proximity of quantum spin liquid state. Our high-pressure heat capacity measurements demonstrate that the AFM order smoothly melts away at a critical pressure (Pc) of 0.7 GPa. Intriguingly, the AFM transition temperature displays an increase upon applying pressure below the Pc, in stark contrast to usual phase diagrams, for example in pressurized parent compounds of unconventional superconductors. Furthermore, in the high-pressure phase an unusual steady of magnetoresistance is observed. These observations suggest that the high-pressure phase is in an exotic gapped quantum state which is robust against pressure up to ~140 GPa.

Evidence of Electron-Hole Imbalance in WTe2 from High-Resolution Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

WTe2 has attracted a great deal of attention because it exhibits extremely large and nonsaturating magnetoresistance. The underlying origin of such a giant magnetoresistance is still under debate. Utilizing laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with high energy and momentum resolutions, we reveal the complete electronic structure of WTe2. This makes it possible to determine accurately the electron and hole concentrations and their temperature dependence. We find that, with increasing the temperature, the overall electron concentration increases while the total hole concentration decreases. It indicates that the electron-hole compensation, if it exists, can only occur in a narrow temperature range, and in most of the temperature range there is an electron-hole imbalance. Our results are not consistent with the perfect electron-hole compensation picture that is commonly considered to be the cause of the unusual magnetoresistance in WTe2. We identified a flat band near the Brillouin zone center that is close to the Fermi level and exhibits a pronounced temperature dependence. Such a flat band can play an important role in dictating the transport properties of WTe2. Our results provide new insight on understanding the origin of the unusual magnetoresistance in WTe2.

Stacked Deconvolutional Network for Semantic Segmentation

Recent progress in semantic segmentation has been driven by improving the spatial resolution under Fully Convolutional Networks (FCNs). To address this problem, we propose a Stacked Deconvolutional Network (SDN) for semantic segmentation. In SDN, multiple shallow deconvolutional networks, which are called as SDN units, are stacked one by one to integrate contextual information and guarantee the fine recovery of localization information. Meanwhile, inter-unit and intra-unit connections are designed to assist network training and enhance feature fusion since the connections improve the flow of information and gradient propagation throughout the network. Besides, hierarchical supervision is applied during the upsampling process of each SDN unit, which guarantees the discrimination of feature representations and benefits the network optimization. We carry out comprehensive experiments and achieve the new state-of-the-art results on three datasets, including PASCAL VOC 2012, CamVid, GATECH. In particular, our best model without CRF post-processing achieves an intersection-over-union score of 86.6% in the test set.

Transformable Biomimetic Liquid Metal Chameleon

Liquid metal (LM) is of current core interest for a wide variety of newly emerging areas. However, the functional materials thus made so far by LM only could display a single silver-white appearance. Here in this study, the new conceptual colorful LM marbles working like transformable biomimetic chameleons were proposed and fabricated from LM droplets through encasing them with fluorescent nano-particles. We demonstrated that this unique LM marble can be manipulated into various stable magnificent appearances as one desires. And it can also splitt and merge among different colors. Such multifunctional LM chameleon is capable of responding to the outside electric-stimulus and realizing shape transformation and discoloration behaviors as well. Further more, the electric-stimuli has been disclosed to be an easy going way to trigger the release of nano/micro-particles from the LM. The present fluorescent biomimetic liquid metal chameleon is expected to offer important opportunities for diverse unconventional applications, especially in a wide variety of functional smart material and color changeable soft robot areas.

Surfing Liquid Metal Droplet on the Same Metal Bath via Electrolyte Interface

We reported a phenomenon that when exerting an electric field gradient across a liquid metal/electrolyte interface, a droplet of the same liquid metal can persistently surf on the interface without coalescence. A thin layer of the intermediate solution, which separates the droplet from direct metallic contacting and provides the levitating force, is responsible for such surfing effect. The electric resistance of this solution film is measured and the film thickness is further theoretically calculated. The fact that the levitating state can be switched on and off via a controlled manner paves a way for reliable manipulation of liquid metal droplet.

Quantum parameter estimation with optimal control

A pivotal task in quantum metrology, and quantum parameter estimation in general, is to de- sign schemes that achieve the highest precision with given resources. Standard models of quantum metrology usually assume the dynamics is fixed, the highest precision is achieved by preparing the optimal probe states and performing optimal measurements. However, in many practical experimental settings, additional controls are usually available to alter the dynamics. Here we propose to use optimal control methods for further improvement on the precision limit of quantum parameter estimation. We show that by exploring the additional degree of freedom offered by the controls higher precision limit can be achieved. In particular we show that the precision limit under the controlled schemes can go beyond the constraints put by the coherent time, which is in contrast to the standard scheme where the precision limit is always bounded by the coherent time.

Electronic structure of heavy fermion system CePt2In7 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have carried out high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the Cebased heavy fermion compound CePt2In7 that exhibits stronger two-dimensional character than the prototypical heavy fermion system CeCoIn5. Multiple Fermi surface sheets and a complex band structure are clearly resolved. We have also performed detailed band structure calculations on CePt2In7. The good agreement found between our measurements and the calculations suggests that the band renormalization effect is rather weak in CePt2In7. A comparison of the common features of the electronic structure of CePt2In7 and CeCoIn5 indicates that CeCoIn5 shows a much stronger band renormalization effect than CePt2In7. These results provide new information for understanding the heavy fermion behaviors and unconventional superconductivity in Ce-based heavy fermion systems.

Erasing and Correction of Liquid Metal Printed Electronics Made of Gallium Alloy Ink from the Substrate

Gallium-based liquid metals have recently been found important in a variety of newly emerging applications such as room temperature metal 3D printing, direct writing of electronics and biomedicine etc. In all these practices, one frequently encounters the situations that a printed circuit or track needs to be corrected or the unwanted parts of the device should be removed as desired. However, few appropriate strategies are currently available to tackle such important issues at this stage. Here we have identified several low cost ways toward this goal by comparatively investigating three typical strategies spanning from mechanical, chemical, to electrochemical principles, for removing the gallium-based liquid metal circuits or thin films. Regarding the mechanical approach, we constructed an eraser for removing the liquid metal thin films. It was shown that ethanol (CH3CH2OH) could serve as a good candidacy material for the mechanical eraser. In the chemical category, we adopted alkalis and acids to remove the finely printed liquid metal circuits and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution was particularly revealed to be rather efficient in making a chemical eraser. In the electrochemical strategy, we applied a 15 V voltage to a liquid metal thin film (covered with water) and successfully removed the target metal part. These methods were comparatively evaluated with each of the merits and shortcomings preliminarily clarified in the end. The present work is expected to be important for the increasing applications of the liquid metal enabled additive manufactures.

Interactive Levy Flight in Interest Space

Compared to the well-studied topic of human mobility in real geographic space, very few studies focus on human mobility in virtual space, such as interests, knowledge, ideas, and so forth. However, it relates to the issues of management of public opinions, knowledge diffusion, and innovation. In this paper, we assume that the interests of a group of online users can span a Euclidean space which is called interest space, and the transfers of user interests can be modeled as the Levy Flight on the interest space. To consider the interaction between users, we assume that the random walkers are not independent but interact each other indirectly via the digital resources in the interest space. The model can successfully reproduce a set of scaling laws for describing the growth of the attention flow networks of real online communities, and the ranges of the exponents of the scaling are similar with the empirical data. Further, we can infer parameters for describing the individual behaviors of the users according to the scaling laws of the empirical attention flow network. Our model can not only provide theoretical understanding on human online behaviors, but also has wide potential applications, such as dissemination and management of public opinions, online recommendation, etc.

Synchronous Observation on the Spontaneous Transformation of Liquid Metal under Free Falling Microgravity Situation

The unusually high surface tension of room temperature liquid metal is molding it as unique material for diverse newly emerging areas. However, unlike its practices on earth, such metal fluid would display very different behaviors when working in space where gravity disappears and surface property dominates the major physics. So far, few direct evidences are available to understand such effect which would impede further exploration of liquid metal use for space. Here to preliminarily probe into this intriguing issue, a low cost experimental strategy to simulate microgravity environment on earth was proposed through adopting bridges with high enough free falling distance as the test platform. Then using digital cameras amounted along x, y, z directions on outside wall of the transparent container with liquid metal and allied solution inside, synchronous observations on the transient flow and transformational activities of liquid metal were performed. Meanwhile, an unmanned aerial vehicle was adopted to record the whole free falling dynamics of the test capsule from the far end which can help justify subsequent experimental procedures. A series of typical fundamental phenomena were thus observed as: (a) A relatively large liquid metal object would spontaneously transform from its original planar pool state into a sphere and float in the container if initiating the free falling; (b) The liquid metal changes its three-dimensional shape due to dynamic microgravity strength due to free falling and rebound of the test capsule; and (c) A quick spatial transformation of liquid metal immersed in the solution can easily be induced via external electrical fields. The mechanisms of the surface tension driven liquid metal actuation in space were interpreted. All these findings indicated that microgravity effect should be fully treated in developing future generation liquid metal space technologies.
