Liquid-Solid Phase Transition Alloy as Reversible and Rapid Molding Bone Cement

Bone cement has been demonstrated as an essential restorative material in the orthopedic surgery. However current materials often imply unavoidable drawbacks, such as tissue-cement reaction induced thermal injuries and troublesome revision procedure. Here we proposed an injectable alloy cement to address such problems through its liquid-solid phase transition mechanism. The cement is made of a unique alloy BiInSnZn with a specifically designed low melting point 57.5°C. This property enables its rapid molding into various shapes with high plasticity. Some fundamental characteristics including mechanical strength behaviors and phase transition-induced thermal features have been measured to demonstrate the competence of alloy as unconventional cement with favorable merits. Further biocompatible tests showed that this material could be safely employed in vivo. In addition, experiments also found the alloy cement capability as an excellent contrast agent for radiation imaging. Particularly, the proposed alloy cement with reversible phase transition feature significantly simplifies the revision of cement and prosthesis. This study opens the way to implement alloy material as bone cement to fulfill diverse clinical needs.

Liquid Metal Angiography for Mega Contrast X-ray Visualization of Vascular Network

Visualizing the anatomical vessel networks plays a vital role in physiological or pathological investigations. However, identifying the fine structures of the smallest capillary vessels via conventional imaging ways remains a big challenge. Here, the room temperature liquid metal angiography was proposed for the first time to produce mega contrast X-ray images for multi-scale vasculature mapping. Gallium was used as the room temperature liquid metal contrast agent and perfused into the vessels of in vitro pig hearts and kidneys. We scanned the samples under X-ray and compared the angiograms with those obtained via conventional contrast agent--the iohexol. As quantitatively proved by the gray scale histograms, the contrast of the vessels to the surrounding tissues in the liquid metal angiograms is orders higher than that of the iohexol enhanced images. And the resolution of the angiograms has reached 100μm, which means the capillaries can be clearly distinguished in the liquid metal enhanced images. With tomography from the micro-CT, we also managed to reconstruct the 3-dementional structures of the kidney vessels. Tremendous clarity and efficiency of the method over existing approaches were experimentally demonstrated. It was disclosed that the usually invisible capillary networks now become distinctively clear in the gallium angiograms. This mechanism can be generalized and extended to a wide spectrum of 3-dimensional computational tomographic areas. It provides a soft tool for quickly reconstructing high resolution spatial channel networks for scientific researches or engineering applications where complicated and time consuming surgical procedures are no longer necessary.

Fully Automatic Liquid Metal Printer towards Personal Electronics Manufacture

Printed electronics is quickly emerging with tremendous value in a wide variety of latest electrical engineering areas. However, restricted to the rather limited conductive inks and printing strategies, the currently existing electronics manufacturing tools are generally complicated, expensive, time, material, water and energy consuming, and thus mainly restricted to the industrial use. Here from an alternative way, the present article demonstrated for the first time an entirely automatic printing system for personal electronics manufacturing through introducing a composite liquid metal ink delivery and printing mechanism to overcome the large surface tension facing the solution, and integrating it with the notebook computer controlling algorithm. With the developed printer, any desired electronically conductive patterns spanning from single wires to various complex structures like integrated circuit (IC), antenna, PCB, RFID, electronic greeting cards, decoration arts, classical buildings (White House, Great Wall etc.) or more do-it-yourself (DIY) circuits were demonstrated to be printed out in a moment with high precision. And the total cost for the whole system has reached personal affordability, which is hard to offer by so far the state of the art technologies. Some fundamental fluid dynamics mechanisms related to the proposed tapping mode enabled reliable printing and adhesion of the liquid metal electronics on the flexible substrate was systematically disclosed through theoretical interpretation and experimental measurements. This clearly beyond-the-lab technology and pervasively available liquid metal printer opens the way for large scale home level electronics making in the coming time.

Atomized Spraying of Liquid Metal Droplets on Desired Substrate Surfaces as a Generalized Way for Ubiquitous Printed Electronics

A direct electronics printing technique through atomized spraying for patterning room temperature liquid metal droplets on desired substrate surfaces is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for the first time. This method has generalized purpose and is highly flexible and capable of fabricating electronic components on any desired target objects, with either flat or rough surfaces, made of different materials, or different orientations from 1-D to 3-D geometrical configurations. With a pre-designed mask, the liquid metal ink can be directly deposited on the substrate to form various specific patterns which lead to the rapid prototyping of electronic devices. Further, extended printing strategies were also suggested to illustrate the adaptability of the method such that the natural porous structure can be adopted to offer an alternative way of making transparent conductive film with an optical transmittance of 47% and a sheet resistance of 5.167Ω/O. Different from the former direct writing technology where large surface tension and poor adhesion between the liquid metal and the substrate often impede the flexible printing process, the liquid metal here no longer needs to be pre-oxidized to guarantee its applicability on target substrates. One critical mechanism was found as that the atomized liquid metal microdroplets can be quickly oxidized in the air due to its large specific surface area, resulting in a significant increase of the adhesive capacity and thus firm deposition of the ink to the substrate. This study established a generalized way for pervasively and directly printing electronics on various substrates which are expected to be significant in a wide spectrum of electrical engineering areas.

The Influence of Ca and Y on the Microstructure and Corrosion Resistance of Vacuum Die Casting AZ91 Alloy

The influence of Ca and Y on the microstructure and corrosion resistance of vacuum die casting AZ91 alloy is investigated using optical microscope, electron scanning microscope, weight-loss test and electrochemical corrosion test. The results indicate that the microstructure of AZ91 alloy can be refined, amount of Mg17Al12 phases is reduced, making Mg17Al12 phases transform from banding to reticular, and stringer Al2Ca phases and block Al2Y phases are formed through adding both Ca and Y. The corrosion resistance of AZ91 magnesium alloy can be increased greatly by adding both Ca and Y. The corrosion rate of AZ91-1.5Ca-1.0Y alloy is dropped to 16.2% of that of AZ91 alloy immersed in 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution for 24 hours. The corrosion current density of AZ91-1.5Ca-1.0Y alloy is dropped by one order of magnitude.

Liquid Metal Flow Can Be One Clue to Explain the Frequently Observed Fluid-Like Matters on Mars

The frequently discovered flooding structure on Mars and other planets has long been an intriguing mystery remained un-disclosed so far. Considering that on Earth, quite a few low melting point liquid metals or their alloy can be candidates of fluid like matters, we proposed here that there might also exists certain liquid metal instead of water or methane alone on Mars or the like planets. Compared with water, such liquid metal would be much easier to stay at the Mars surface because of its low melting point however extremely high evaporation point. Along this theoretical route, quite a few observations on the fluid like matters in former space explorations can be well interpreted. Such hypothesis for the existence of liquid metal on Mars surface does not mean refuting the possibility of water on Mars. This new point would be helpful for planning further exploration of Mars in a sense according to the characters of liquid metal. It at least identifies one more target fluid towards either finding or denying life at outer space. Whether the planet could harbor life in some form or it reaffirms Mars as an important future destination for human exploration still needs serious but not just enthusiasm explorations.

Study on the effect of humidity and dust on leakage current of bulk micro-MEGAS detector

In this paper, the effect of humidity and dust trapped in avalanche region on leakage current of bulk micro-MEGAS detector is studied. Pyralux PC1025 layers of DuPont are introduced in bulk technique and micro-MEGAS detector with pillars of 300μm in diameter is fabricated. Leakage current is tested in air with different humidity. Silicon carbide powder and PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) powder are added as dust to avalanche region. Leakage current with and without powder is tested in air and results are depicted in the same figure. Test results indicate that leakage current increases with both storage humidity and test humidity, and also increases when powder is introduced in avalanche region.

Mechanical Therapy as a Potential Green Way to Attack Cancer Disease

Mechanical force is tightly connected to human health status, and the occurrence of disease can generally be ascribed to certain loss of force balance. However, the role of mechanical approaches in tumor therapy is largely neglected, while the currently available cancer prevention and treatment methods are generally either expensive or just cause too much side effect. In this article, we present a systematic interpretation on a promising strategy which was termed here as Mechanical Therapy for the first time based on the fact that mechanical force closely accompanies the whole life (growth and death) of a cell, and plays a crucial role in biological functions. In order to mold the mechanical force as a practical tool for cancer therapy, we expound the effects of the mechanical force related to the tumors from molecule to tissue level and evaluate its feasibility for treatment purpose. It can be conceived that given enough investigations, the mechanical therapy may generate big potential to open new windows for cancer prevention, relieving or even destroying if well administrated. As an easy going and convenient method, a systematic and thorough study of mechanical therapy may clarify more options for future clinical practices. Besides, when patients encounter various forces in daily life, they can at least identify the good or bad forces for a better and healthy life style based on the mechanisms thus disclosed.

Splashing phenomena of room temperature liquid metal droplet striking on the pool of the same liquid under ambient air environment

In this article, the fluid dynamics of room temperature liquid metal (RTLM) droplet impacting onto a pool of the same liquid in ambient air was investigated. A series of experiments were conducted in order to disclose the influence of the oxidation effect on the impact dynamics. The droplet shape and impact phenomenology were recorded with the aid of a high-speed digital camera. The impact energy stored in the splash structures was estimated via a theoretical model and several morphological parameters obtained from instantaneous images of the splash. It was observed that the droplet shape and the splashing morphology of RTLM were drastically different from those of water, so was the impact dynamics between room temperature LM pool and high temperature LM pool. The energy analysis disclosed that the height of the jet is highly sensitive to the viscosity of the fluid, which is subjected to the oxidation effect and temperature effect simultaneously, and thus perfectly explained the phenomena. These basic findings are important for the application of RTLM in a series of newly emerging technologies such as liquid metal based spray cooling, ink-jet printed electronics, interface material painting and coating, metallurgy, and 3D packages, etc.

Pervasive liquid metal direct writing electronics with roller-ball pen

A roller-ball pen enabled direct writing electronics via room temperature liquid metal ink was proposed. With the rolling to print mechanism, the metallic inks were smoothly written on flexible polymer substrate to form conductive tracks and electronic devices. The contact angle analyzer and scanning electron microscope were implemented to probe the inner property of the obtained electronics. An ever high writing resolution with line width and thickness as 200μm and 80μm, respectively was realized. Further, with the administration of external writing pressure, GaIn24.5 droplets embody increasing wettability on polymer which demonstrates the pervasive adaptability of the roller-ball pen electronics.

Break-up phenomena of liquid metal thin film induced by high electric current

The room temperature liquid metal related electronics has been found important in a wide variety of emerging areas over the past few years. However, its failure features under high electrical current densities are not clear until now. Here we show that a liquid metal thin film would break-up as the applied current increases to a critical magnitude. The break-up phenomenon is attributed to be caused by the so-called electromigration effect. This problem could be one of the major hurdles that must be tackled with caution in the research and application of future liquid metal film electronics.

Phase matching condition for enhancement of phase sensitivity in quantum metrology

We find a phase matching condition for enhancement of sensitivity in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer illuminated by an arbitrary state in one input port and an odd(even) state in the other port. Under this condition, the Fisher information becomes maximal with respect to the relative phase of two modes and the phase sensitivity is enhanced. For the case with photon losses, we further find that the phase matching condition keeps unchanged with a coherent state and a coherent superposition state as the input states.

Indistinguishability of Warm Dark Matter, Modified Gravity, and Coupled Cold Dark Matter

The current accelerated expansion of our universe could be due to an unknown energy component with negative pressure (dark energy) or a modification to general relativity (modified gravity). On the other hand, recently warm dark matter (WDM) remarkably rose as an alternative of cold dark matter (CDM). Obviously, it is of interest to distinguish these different types of models. In fact, many attempts have been made in the literature. However, in the present work, we show that WDM, modified gravity and coupled CDM form a trinity, namely, they are indistinguishable by using the cosmological observations of both cosmic expansion history and growth history. Therefore, to break this degeneracy, the other complementary probes beyond the ones of cosmic expansion history and growth history are required.

Quantum Fisher Information of Entangled Coherent States in a Lossy Mach-Zehnder Interferometer

We give an analytical result for the quantum Fisher information of entangled coherent States in a lossy Mach-Zehnder Interferometer recently proposed by J. Joo et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 083601(2011)]. For small loss of photons, we find that the entangled coherent state can surpass the Heisenberg limit. Furthermore, The formalism developed here is applicable to the study of phase sensitivity of multipartite entangled coherent states.

Scholte waves generated by seafloor topography

Seafloor topography can excite strong interface waves called Scholte waves that are often dispersive and characterized by slow propagation but large amplitude. This type of wave can be used to invert for near seafloor shear wave velocity structure that is important information for multi-component P-S seismic imaging. Three different approaches are taken to understand excitation of Scholte waves and numerical aspects of modeling Scholte waves, including analytical Cagniard-de Hoop analysis, the boundary integral method and a staggered grid finite difference method. For simple media for which the Green's function can be easily computed, the boundary element method produces accurate results. The finite difference method shows strong numerical artifacts and stagnant artificial waves can be seen in the vicinity of topography at the fluid-solid interface even when using fine computational grids. However, the amplitude of these artificial waves decays away from the seafloor. It is sensible to place receivers away from the fluid-solid interface for seismic modeling. To investigate Scholte wave generation, one needs to correctly implement the fluid-solid boundary condition. It is also shown through numerical examples including using a seafloor profile from the recent SEG Advanced Modeling (SEAM) Project that even mild topographic features can generate Scholte waves and these waves can be used to constrain near seafloor S wave velocity by dispersion analysis of interface Scholte waves. The implication to the full waveform inversion is that, although low frequency data are crucial for convergence, seafloor topography may have a large effect on low frequency seismic waves.

Non-unital non-Markovianity of quantum dynamics

We show that Breuer-Laine-Piilo (BLP) non-Markovianity cannot capture the dynamical information in the non-unital aspect of the quantum dynamics. Moreover, we provide a measure on the effect of the non-unitality of quantum processes on the infinitesimal non-divisibility. This measure can be used as a supplement to BLP non-Markovianity for non-unital quantum processes. A measure on the degree of the non-unital behavior of quantum processes is also given in this paper.

Cosmological Constraints on Variable Warm Dark Matter

Although $Λ$CDM model is very successful in many aspects, it has been seriously challenged. Recently, warm dark matter (WDM) remarkably rose as an alternative of cold dark matter (CDM). In the literature, many attempts have been made to determine the equation-of-state parameter (EoS) of WDM. However, in most of the previous works, it is usually assumed that the EoS of dark matter (DM) is constant (and usually the EoS of dark energy is also constant). Obviously, this assumption is fairly restrictive. It is more natural to assume a variable EoS for WDM (and dark energy). In the present work, we try to constrain the EoS of variable WDM with the current cosmological observations. We find that the best fits indicate WDM, while CDM is still consistent with the current observational data. However, $Λ$CDM is still better than WDM models from the viewpoint of goodness-of-fit. So, in order to distinguish WDM and CDM, the further observations on the small/galactic scale are required. On the other hand, in this work we also consider WDM whose EoS is constant, while the role of dark energy is played by various models. We find that the cosmological constraint on the constant EoS of WDM is fairly robust.

Structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene under pressure

The structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene are measured at high pressures up to 30.2 GPa by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. Two phase transitions are observed in raman spectra under pressures of 2.3 GPa and 5.4 GPa with significant changes of intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes, and all the raman peaks disappeared in the luminesce background above 10.2 GPa. Upon further compression above 20.0 GPa, three broad bands are observed respectively around 1600, 2993 and 3181 cm$^{-1}$ in Raman spectra, strongly indicating that phenanthrene has transformed into amorphous hydrogenated carbon. Based on x-ray diffraction, the structures of corresponding phases observed in Raman spectra are identified with space group of $P_{\rm}2_{1}$ for phase I at 0-2.2 GPa, $P_{\rm}$2/\emph{m} for phase II at 2.2-5.6 GPa and $P_{\rm}$2/\emph{m}+\emph{Pmmm} for phase III at 5.6-11.4 GPa, and the structure above 11.4 GPa is identified with space group of \emph{Pmmm}. Although phenanthrene has amorphized above 20.0 GPa, the amorphous hydrogenated carbon clusters still remain the crystalline characteristic based on x-ray diffraction patterns. Our results suggest that the long-range periodicity and the local disorder state coexist in phenanthrene at high pressures.
