Energy Management for Autonomous Underwater Vehicles Using Economic Model Predictive Control

This paper investigates the problem of energy-optimal control for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). To improve the endurance of AUVs, we propose a novel energy-optimal control scheme based on the economic model predictive control (MPC) framework. We first formulate a cost function that computes the energy spent for vehicle operation over a finite-time prediction horizon. Then, to account for the energy consumption beyond the prediction horizon, a terminal cost that approximates the energy to reach the goal (energy-to-go) is incorporated into the MPC cost function.

Single frame wide-field Nanoscopy based on Ghost Imaging via Sparsity Constraints (GISC Nanoscopy)

The applications of present nanoscopy techniques for live cell imaging are limited by the long sampling time and low emitter density. Here we developed a new single frame wide-field nanoscopy based on ghost imaging via sparsity constraints (GISC Nanoscopy), in which a spatial random phase modulator is applied in a wide-field microscopy to achieve random measurement for fluorescence signals. This new method can effectively utilize the sparsity of fluorescence emitters to dramatically enhance the imaging resolution to 80 nm by compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction for one raw image. The ultra-high emitter density of 143 μm-2 has been achieved while the precision of single-molecule localization below 25 nm has been maintained. Thereby working with high-density of photo-switchable fluorophores GISC nanoscopy can reduce orders of magnitude sampling frames compared with previous single-molecule localization based super-resolution imaging methods.

MPC-Based Precision Cooling Strategy (PCS) for Efficient Thermal Management of Automotive Air Conditioning System

In this paper, we propose an MPC-based precision cooling strategy (PCS) for energy efficient thermal management of automotive air conditioning (A/C) system. The proposed PCS is able to provide precise tracking of the time-varying cooling power trajectory, which is assumed to match the passenger comfort requirements. In addition, by leveraging the emerging connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) technology, vehicle speed preview can be incorporated in our A/C thermal management strategy for further energy efficiency improvement. This proposed A/C thermal management strategy is developed and evaluated based on a physics-based A/C system model (ACSim) from Ford Motor Company for the vehicles with electrified powertrains. In a comparison with Ford benchmark case over SC03 cycle, for tracking the same cooling power trajectory, the proposed PCS provides 4.9% energy saving at the cost of a slight increase in the cabin temperature (less than 1$^oC$). It is also demonstrated that by coordinating with future vehicle speed and shifting the A/C power load, the A/C energy consumption can be further reduced.

Numerical algorithm for the space-time fractional Fokker-Planck system with two internal states

The fractional Fokker-Planck system with multiple internal states is derived in [Xu and Deng, Math. Model. Nat. Phenom., $\mathbf{13}$, 10 (2018)], where the space derivative is Laplace operator. If the jump length distribution of the particles is power law instead of Gaussian, the space derivative should be replaced with fractional Laplacian. This paper focuses on solving the two state Fokker-Planck system with fractional Laplacian. We first provide a priori estimate for this system under different regularity assumptions on the initial data. Then we use $L_1$ scheme to discretize the time fractional derivatives and finite element method to approximate the fractional Laplacian operators. Furthermore, we give the error estimates for the space semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes without any assumption on regularity of solutions. Finally, the effectiveness of the designed scheme is verified by numerical experiments.

Integrated Optimization of Power Split, Engine Thermal Management, and Cabin Heating for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Cabin heating demand and engine efficiency degradation in cold weather lead to considerable increase in fuel consumption of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), especially in congested traffic conditions. This paper presents an integrated power and thermal management (i-PTM) scheme for the optimization of power split, engine thermal management, and cabin heating of HEVs. A control-oriented model of a power split HEV, including power and thermal loops, is developed and experimentally validated against data collected from a 2017 Toyota Prius HEV. Based on this model, the dynamic programming (DP) technique is adopted to derive a bench-mark for minimal fuel consumption, using 2-dimensional (power split and engine thermal management) and 3-dimensional (power split, engine thermal management, and cabin heating) formulations. Simulation results for a real-world congested driving cycle show that the engine thermal effect and the cabin heating requirement can significantly influence the optimal behavior for the power management, and substantial potential on fuel saving can be achieved by the i-PTM optimization as compared to conventional power and thermal management strategies.

Thermal Responses of Connected HEVs Engine and Aftertreatment Systems to Eco-Driving

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have been recognized as providing unprecedented opportunities for substantial fuel economy improvement through CAV-based vehicle speed trajectory optimization (eco-driving). At the same time, the implications of the CAV operation on thermal responses, including those of engine and exhaust aftertreatment system, have not been fully investigated. To this end, firstly, a sequential optimization framework for vehicle speed trajectory planning and powertrain control in hybrid electric CAVs is proposed in this paper. Next, the impact of eco-driving and power split optimization on the engine and catalytic converter thermal responses, as well as on the tailpipe emissions is characterized. Despite an average 16% improvement in fuel economy through sequential optimization, this study shows that eco-driving slows down the thermal responses, which could unfavorably affect the tailpipe emissions.

Sequential Optimization of Speed, Thermal Load, and Power Split in Connected HEVs

The emergence of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) provides an unprecedented opportunity to capitalize on these technologies well beyond their original designed intents. While abundant evidence has been accumulated showing substantial fuel economy improvement benefits achieved through advanced powertrain control, the implications of the CAV operation on power and thermal management have not been fully investigated. In this paper, in order to explore the opportunities for the coordination between the onboard thermal management and the power split control, we present a sequential optimization solution for eco-driving speed trajectory planning, air conditioning (A/C) thermal load planning (eco-cooling), and powertrain control in hybrid electric CAVs to evaluate the individual as well as the collective energy savings through proactive usage of traffic data for vehicle speed prediction. Simulation results over a real-world driving cycle show that compared to a baseline non-CAV, 11.9%, 14.2%, and 18.8% energy savings can be accumulated sequentially through speed, thermal load, and power split optimizations, respectively.

Fast algorithms for convolution quadrature of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative

Recently, the numerical schemes of the Fokker-Planck equations describing anomalous diffusion with two internal states have been proposed in [Nie, Sun and Deng, arXiv: 1811.04723], which use convolution quadrature to approximate the Riemann-Liouville fractional derivative; and the schemes need huge storage and computational cost because of the non-locality of fractional derivative and the large scale of the system. This paper first provides the fast algorithms for computing the Riemann-Liouville derivative based on convolution quadrature with the generating function given by the backward Euler and second-order backward difference methods; the algorithms don't require the assumption of the regularity of the solution in time, while the computation time and the total memory requirement are greatly reduced. Then we apply the fast algorithms to solve the homogeneous fractional Fokker-Planck equations with two internal states for nonsmooth data and get the first- and second-order accuracy in time. Lastly, numerical examples are presented to verify the convergence and the effectiveness of the fast algorithms.

Numerical scheme for the Fokker-Planck equations describing anomalous diffusions with two internal states

Recently, the fractional Fokker-Planck equations (FFPEs) with multiple internal states are built for the particles undergoing anomalous diffusion with different waiting time distributions for different internal states, which describe the distribution of positions of the particles [Xu and Deng, Math. Model. Nat. Phenom., $\mathbf{13}$, 10 (2018)]. In this paper, we first develop the Sobolev regularity of the FFPEs with two internal states, including the homogeneous problem with smooth and nonsmooth initial values and the inhomogeneous problem with vanishing initial value, and then we design the numerical scheme for the system of fractional partial differential equations based on the finite element method for the space derivatives and convolution quadrature for the time fractional derivatives. The optimal error estimates of the scheme under the above three different conditions are provided for both space semidiscrete and fully discrete schemes. Finally, one- and two-dimensional numerical experiments are performed to confirm our theoretical analysis and the predicted convergence order.

Real-Time Model Predictive Control for Energy Management in Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

Improving endurance is crucial for extending the spatial and temporal operation range of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Considering the hardware constraints and the performance requirements, an intelligent energy management system is required to extend the operation range of AUVs. This paper presents a novel model predictive control (MPC) framework for energy-optimal point-to-point motion control of an AUV. In this scheme, the energy management problem of an AUV is reformulated as a surge motion optimization problem in two stages. First, a system-level energy minimization problem is solved by managing the trade-off between the energies required for overcoming the positive buoyancy and surge drag force in static optimization. Next, an MPC with a special cost function formulation is proposed to deal with transients and system dynamics. A switching logic for handling the transition between the static and dynamic stages is incorporated to reduce the computational efforts. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to achieve near-optimal energy consumption with considerable lower computational complexity.

Two-Layer Model Predictive Battery Thermal and Energy Management Optimization for Connected and Automated Electric Vehicles

Future vehicles are expected to be able to exploit increasingly the connected driving environment for efficient, comfortable, and safe driving. Given relatively slow dynamics associated with the state of charge and temperature response in electrified vehicles with large batteries, a long prediction/planning horizon is needed to achieve improved energy efficiency benefits. In this paper, we develop a two-layer Model Predictive Control (MPC) strategy for battery thermal and energy management of electric vehicle (EV), aiming at improving fuel economy through real-time prediction and optimization. In the first layer, the long-term traffic flow information and an approximate model reflective of the relatively slow battery temperature dynamics are leveraged to minimize energy consumption required for battery cooling while maintaining the battery temperature within the desired operating range. In the second layer, the scheduled battery thermal and state of charge (SOC) trajectories planned to achieve long-term battery energy-optimal thermal behavior are used as the reference over a short horizon to regulate the battery temperature. Additionally, an intelligent online constraint handling (IOCH) algorithm is developed to compensate for the mismatch between the actual and predicted driving conditions and reduce the chance for battery temperature constraint violation. The simulation results show that, depending on the driving cycle, the proposed two-layer MPC is able to save 2.8-7.9% of the battery energy compared to the traditional rule-based controller in connected and automated vehicle (CAV) operation scenario. Moreover, as compared to a single layer MPC with a long horizon, the two-layer structure of the proposed MPC solution reduces significantly the computing effort without compromising the performance.

Numerical algorithms of the two-dimensional Feynman-Kac equation for reaction and diffusion processes

This paper provides a finite difference discretization for the backward Feynman-Kac equation, governing the distribution of functionals of the path for a particle undergoing both reaction and diffusion [Hou and Deng, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor., {\bf51}, 155001 (2018)]. Numerically solving the equation with the time tempered fractional substantial derivative and tempered fractional Laplacian consists in discretizing these two non-local operators. Here, using convolution quadrature, we provide a first-order and second-order schemes for discretizing the time tempered fractional substantial derivative, which doesn't require the assumption of the regularity of the solution in time; we use the finite difference method to approximate the two-dimensional tempered fractional Laplacian, and the accuracy of the scheme depends on the regularity of the solution on $\barΩ$ rather than the whole space. Lastly, we verify the predicted convergence orders and the effectiveness of the presented schemes by numerical examples.

Evaluation of the Energy Efficiency in a Mixed Traffic with Automated Vehicles and Human Controlled Vehicles

The energy efficiency of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) is significantly influenced by surrounding road users. This paper presents the evaluation of energy efficiency of CAVs in a mixed traffic interacted with human controlled vehicles. To simulate the interaction between the CAVs and the cut-in vehicles controlled by human drivers near the intersection, a lane changing model is proposed to emulate the politeness and patience characteristics of the human driver. The proposed lane changing model is then calibrated based on over 100,000 naturalistic lane changing events collected by the University of Michigan Safety Pilot Model Deployment Program. A case study on simulation of the cut-in scenario is carried out to demonstrate the human driver's lane changing sensitivity under different driving trajectories of a frontal CAV and the influence on the energy consumption of the CAV due to the cut-in vehicle is evaluated. The simulation results indicate that the fuel economy of the CAV can be substantially improved if its surrounding cut-in vehicles can be well handled.

Interpenetrating Cooperative Localization in Dynamic Connected Vehicle Networks

In this paper, we proposed the Interpenetrating Cooperative Localization (ICL) method to enhance the localization accuracy in dynamic connected vehicle networks. This mechanism makes the information from one group of connected vehicles interpenetrate to other groups without full communication between all nodes, thus improving the utility of information in a low connected vehicle penetration situation. We tested the approach using the dynamic traffic data collected in the Safety Pilot Model Deployment program in Ann Arbor Michigan, USA, with dynamic changing networks due to the traveling of vehicles and packet drops of the Dedicated Short-Range Communication. Results show enhancement of localization accuracy with errors reduced by up to 70 % even in complex dynamic scenarios.

Model Predictive Climate Control of Connected and Automated Vehicles for Improved Energy Efficiency

This paper considers an application of model predictive control to automotive air conditioning (A/C) system in future connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) with battery electric or hybrid electric powertrains. A control-oriented prediction model for A/C system is proposed, identified, and validated against a higher fidelity simulation model (CoolSim). Based on the developed prediction model, a nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) problem is formulated and solved online to minimize the energy consumption of the A/C system. Simulation results illustrate the desirable characteristics of the proposed NMPC solution such as being able to enforce physical constraints of the A/C system and maintain cabin temperature within a specified range. Moreover, it is shown that by utilizing the vehicle speed preview and through coordinated adjustment of the cabin temperature constraints, energy efficiency improvements of up to 9% can be achieved.

Algorithm implementation and numerical analysis for the two-dimensional tempered fractional Laplacian

Tempered fractional Laplacian is the generator of the tempered isotropic Lévy process [W.H. Deng, B.Y. Li, W.Y. Tian, and P.W. Zhang, Multiscale Model. Simul., 16(1), 125-149, 2018]. This paper provides the finite difference discretization for the two dimensional tempered fractional Laplacian $(Δ+λ)^{\fracβ{2}}$. Then we use it to solve the tempered fractional Poisson equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and derive the error estimates. Numerical experiments verify the convergence rates and effectiveness of the schemes.
