Positive or sign-changing solutions for a critical semilinear nonlocal equation

We consider the following critical semilinear nonlocal equation involving the fractional Laplacian $$ (-Δ)^su=K(|x|)|u|^{2^*_s-2}u,\ \ \hbox{in}\ \ \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $K(|x|)$ is a positive radial function, $N>2+2s$, $0<s<1$, and $2^*_s=\frac{2N}{N-2s}$. Under some asymptotic assumptions on $K(x)$ at an extreme point, we show that this problem has infinitely many non-radial positive or sign-changing solutions.

Anisotropic defect-induced ferromagnetism and transport in Gd-doped GaN two-dimensional electron gasses

Here we report on the effect of rare earth Gd-doping on the magnetic properties and magnetotransport of GaN two-dimensional electron gasses (2DEGs). Samples are grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy and consist of AlN/GaN heterostructures where Gd is delta-doped within a polarization-induced 2DEG. Ferromagnetism is observed in these Gd-doped 2DEGs with a Curie temperature above room temperature and an anisotropic spontaneous magnetization preferring an out-of-plane (c-axis) orientation. At magnetic fields up to 50 kOe, the magnetization remains smaller for in-plane configuration than for out-of-plane, which is indicative of exchange coupled spins locked along the polar c-axis. The sample with the lowest Gd concentration (2.3 $\times$ $10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$) exhibits a saturation magnetization of 41.1 $μ_B/Gd^{3+}$ at 5 K revealing that the Gd ion spins (7 $μ_B$) alone do not account for the magnetization. Surprisingly, control samples grown without any Gd display inconsistent magnetic properties; in some control samples weak ferromagnetism is observed and in others paramagnetism. The ferromagnetic 2DEGs do not exhibit the anomalous Hall effect; the Hall resistance varies non-linearly with the magnetic field, but does not track the magnetization indicating the lack of coupling between the ferromagnetic phase and the conduction band electrons within the 2DEG.

Theoretical Modeling of Tribochemical Reaction on Pt and Au Contacts: Mechanical Load and Catalysis

Micro-electro-mechanical system and nano-electro-mechanical system (MEMS and NEMS) transistors are considered promising for size-reducing and power-maximizing electronic devices. However, the tribopolymer which forms due to the mechanical load to the surface contacts affects the conductivity between the contacts dramatically. This is one of the challenging problems that prevent widespread practical use of these otherwise promising devices. Here, we use density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the mechanisms of tribopolymer formation, including normal mechanical loading, the catalytic effect, as well as the electrochemical effect of the metal contacts. We select benzene select as the background gas, because it is one of the most common and severe hydrocarbon contaminants. Two adsorption cases are considered: one is benzene on the reactive metal surface, Pt(111), and the other is benzene on the noble metal, Au(111). We demonstrate that the formation of tribopolymer is induced both by the mechanical load and by the catalytic effect of the contact. First, benzene molecules are adsorbed on the Pt surfaces. Then, due to the closure of the Pt contacts, stress is applied to the adsorbates, making the C-H bonds more fragile. As the stress increases further, H atoms are pressed close to the Pt substrate and begin to bond with Pt atoms. Thus Pt acts as a catalyst, accelerating the dehydrogenation process. When there is voltage applied across the contacts, the catalytic effect is enhanced by electrochemistry. Finally, due to the loss of H atoms, C atoms become more reactive and link together or pile up to form tribopolymer. By understanding these mechanisms, we provide guidance on design strategies for suppressing tribopolymer formation.

Flagellar Kinematics and Swimming of Algal Cells in Viscoelastic Fluids

The motility of microorganisms is influenced greatly by their hydrodynamic interactions with the fluidic environment they inhabit. We show by direct experimental observation of the bi-flagellated alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii that fluid elasticity and viscosity strongly influence the beating pattern - the gait - and thereby control the propulsion speed. The beating frequency and the wave speed characterizing the cyclical bending are both enhanced by fluid elasticity. Despite these enhancements, the net swimming speed of the alga is hindered for fluids that are sufficiently elastic. The origin of this complex response lies in the interplay between the elasticity-induced changes in the spatial and temporal aspects of the flagellar cycle and the buildup and subsequent relaxation of elastic stresses during the power and recovery strokes.

Solutions for a nonlocal elliptic equation involving critical growth and Hardy potential

In this paper, by an approximating argument, we obtain infinitely many solutions for the following Hardy-Sobolev fractional equation with critical growth \begin{equation*}\label{0.1} \left\{% \begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{s} u-\ds\frac{μu}{|x|^{2s}}=|u|^{2^*_s-2}u+au, & \hbox{$\text{in}~ Ω$},\vspace{0.1cm} u=0,\,\, &\hbox{$\text{on}~\partial Ω$}, \\ \end{array}% \right. \end{equation*} provided $N>6s$, $μ\geq0$, $0< s<1$, $2^*_s=\frac{2N}{N-2s}$, $a>0$ is a constant and $Ω$ is an open bounded domain in $\R^N$ which contains the origin.

Back-to-back correlations of boson-antiboson pairs for anisotropic expanding sources

In the hot and dense hadronic sources formed in high energy heavy ion collisions, the particle interactions in medium might lead to a measurable back-to-back correlation (BBC) of boson-antiboson pairs. We calculate the BBC functions of $ϕ\,ϕ$ and $K^+K^-$ for anisotropic expanding sources. The dependences of the BBC on the particle momentum and source expanding velocity are investigated. The results indicate that the BBC functions increase with the magnitude of particle momentum and exhibit an obvious dependence on the direction of the momentum for the anisotropic sources. As the source expanding velocity decreases, the BBC function decreases when the particle momentum is approximately perpendicular to the source velocity, and the BBC function increases when the particle momentum is approximately parallel to the source velocity.

Relativistic effects on the back-to-back correlation functions of boson-antiboson pairs in high energy heavy ion collisions

We calculate the back-to-back correlation (BBC) functions of relativistic boson-antiboson pairs in high energy heavy ion collisions using the Monte Carlo method. The relativistic effects on the BBC functions of $ϕ\,ϕ$ and $K^+K^-$ pairs are investigated. The investigations indicate that the relativistic effects on the BBC functions of $K^+K^-$ pairs with large momenta are significant, and the effect is sensitive to the particle freeze-out temperature.

Squeezed correlations of $ϕ$ meson pairs for hydrodynamic sources in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

In the hot and dense hadronic sources formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, the particle interactions in medium might lead to a squeezed back-to-back correlation (BBC) of boson-antiboson pairs. We calculate the BBC functions of $ϕϕ$ for sources evolving hydrodynamically in ($2+1$) dimensions and with longitudinal boost invariance. The BBC functions for hydrodynamic sources exhibit oscillations as a function of the particle momentum because the temporal distributions of hydrodynamic sources have sharp falls to 0 at large evolving times. The dependences of the BBC functions on the directions of the particle momentum are investigated. For transverse anisotropic sources, the BBC functions are minimum when the azimuthal angles of the particles reach 0. The BBC functions increase with decreasing absolute value of the particle pseudorapidity. The oscillations and the dependences on the particle azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity are the significant signatures for detecting the BBC in high-energy heavy-ion collisions.

Adaptive Compressive Tracking via Online Vector Boosting Feature Selection

Recently, the compressive tracking (CT) method has attracted much attention due to its high efficiency, but it cannot well deal with the large scale target appearance variations due to its data-independent random projection matrix that results in less discriminative features. To address this issue, in this paper we propose an adaptive CT approach, which selects the most discriminative features to design an effective appearance model. Our method significantly improves CT in three aspects: Firstly, the most discriminative features are selected via an online vector boosting method. Secondly, the object representation is updated in an effective online manner, which preserves the stable features while filtering out the noisy ones. Finally, a simple and effective trajectory rectification approach is adopted that can make the estimated location more accurate. Extensive experiments on the CVPR2013 tracking benchmark demonstrate the superior performance of our algorithm compared over state-of-the-art tracking algorithms.

Infinitely many solutions to linearly coupled Schrödinger equations with non-symmetric potential

We study a linearly coupled Schrödinger system in $\R^N(N\leq3).$ Assume that the potentials in the system are continuous functions satisfying suitable decay assumptions, but without any symmetry properties and the parameters in the system satisfy some suitable restrictions. Using the Liapunov-Schmidt reduction methods two times and combing localized energy method, we prove that the problem has infinitely many positive synchronized solutions, which extends the result Theorem 1.2 about nonlinearly coupled Schrödinger equations in \cite{aw} to our linearly coupled problem.

Infinitely many sign-changing solutions for an elliptic problem with double critical Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya terms

In this paper, we investigate the following elliptic problem involving double critical Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya terms: $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu = μ\frac{|u|^{2^*(t)-2}u}{|y|^t} + \frac{|u|^{2^*(s)-2}u}{|y|^s} + a(x) u, & {\rm in}\ Ω,\\ \quad u = 0, \,\, &{\rm on}\ \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. $$ where $μ\geq0$, $a(x)>0$, $2^*(t)=\frac{2(N-t)}{N-2}$, $2^*(s) = \frac{2(N-s)}{N-2}$, $0\leq t 6+t$ when $μ>0,$ and $N>6+s$ when $μ=0,$ and $Ω$ satisfies some geometric conditions, then the above problem has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. The main tool is to estimate Morse indices of these nodal solution.

Pion Transverse Momentum Spectrum, Elliptic Flow and Interferometry in the Granular Source Model in Ultra-Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We systematically investigate the pion transverse momentum spectrum, elliptic flow, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry in the granular source model of quark-gluon plasma droplets in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions. The granular source model can well reproduce the experimental results of the Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200 GeV and the Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} =$ 2.76 TeV with different centralities. We examine the parameters of the granular source models with an uniform and Woods-Saxon initial energy distributions in a droplet. The parameters exhibit certain regularities for collision centrality and energy.

Pion transverse momentum spectrum, elliptic flow and interferometry in the granular source model for RHIC and LHC heavy ion collisions

We systematically investigate the pion transverse momentum spectrum, elliptic flow, and Hanbury-Brown-Twiss (HBT) interferometry in the granular source model for the heavy ion collisions of Au-Au at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 200 GeV and Pb-Pb at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV with different centralities. The granular source model can well reproduce the experimental results of the heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We examine the parameters involved in the granular source model. The experimental data of the momentum spectrum, elliptic flow, and HBT radii for the two collision energies and different centralities impose very strict constraints on the model parameters. They exhibit certain regularities for collision centrality and energy. The space-time structure and expansion velocities of the granular sources for the heavy ion collisions at the RHIC and LHC energies with different centralities are investigated.

Comments on 'Maximally permissive supervisor synthesis based on a new constraint transformation method'

Luo et al. proposed a new method to design the maximally permissive and efficient supervisor for enforcing linear constraints on an ordinary Petri net with uncontrollable transitions. In order to develop this method, Theorem 3 is given. It is claimed that 'a linear constraint can be equivalently transformed at an uncontrollable transition into a disjunction of weakly admissible ones.' However, this result is erroneous. In this correspondence paper, a counterexample contradicting it is presented.

Weight Distributions of a Class of Cyclic Codes with Arbitrary Number of Zeros II

Cyclic codes are an important class of linear codes, whose weight distribution have been extensively studied. So far, most of previous results obtained were for cyclic codes with no more than three zeros. Recently, \cite{Y-X-D12} constructed a class of cyclic codes with arbitrary number of zeros, and computed the weight distributions for several cases. In this paper, we determine the weight distribution for a new family of such codes. This is achieved by certain new methods, such as the theory of Jacobi sums over finite fields and subtle treatment of some complicated combinatorial identities.

Infinitely many positive solutions for nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equations

We consider the following nonlinear fractional Schrödinger equation $$ (-Δ)^su+u=K(|x|)u^p,\ \ u>0 \ \ \hbox{in}\ \ R^N, $$ where $K(|x|)$ is a positive radial function, $N\ge 2$, $0<s<1$, $1<p<\frac{N+2s}{N-2s}$. Under some asymptotic assumptions on $K(x)$ at infinity, we show that this problem has infinitely many non-radial positive solutions, whose energy can be made arbitrarily large.

GdN Nanoisland-Based GaN Tunnel Junctions

We show that GdN nanoislands can enhance inter-band tunneling in GaN PN junctions by several orders of magnitude, enabling low optical absorption low-resistance tunnel junctions (specific resistivity 1.3 X 10-3 Ω-cm2) for various optoelectronic applications. We exploit the ability to overgrow high quality GaN over GdN nanoislands to create new nanoscale heterostructure designs that are not feasible in planar epitaxy. GdN nanoisland assisted inter-band tunneling was found to enhance tunneling in both of the polar orientations of GaN. Tunnel injection of holes was confirmed by low temperature operation of GaN p-n junction with a tunneling contact layer, showing strong electroluminescence down to 20K. The availability of tunnel junctions with negligible absorption could not only improve the efficiency of existing optoelectronic devices significantly, but also enable new electronic and optical devices based on wide band gap materials.

On Identity Tests for High Dimensional Data Using RMT

In this work, we redefined two important statistics, the CLRT test (Bai et.al., Ann. Stat. 37 (2009) 3822-3840) and the LW test (Ledoit and Wolf, Ann. Stat. 30 (2002) 1081-1102) on identity tests for high dimensional data using random matrix theories. Compared with existing CLRT and LW tests, the new tests can accommodate data which has unknown means and non-Gaussian distributions. Simulations demonstrate that the new tests have good properties in terms of size and power. What is more, even for Gaussian data, our new tests perform favorably in comparison to existing tests. Finally, we find the CLRT is more sensitive to eigenvalues less than 1 while the LW test has more advantages in relation to detecting eigenvalues larger than 1.
