Two-dimensional modeling of the tearing-mode-governed magnetic reconnection in the large-scale current sheet above the two-ribbon flare

We attempt to model magnetic reconnection during the two-ribbon flare in the gravitationally stratified solar atmosphere with the Lundquist number of $S=10^6$ using 2D simulations. We found that the tearing mode instability leads to the inhomogeneous turbulence inside the reconnecting current sheet (CS) and invokes the fast phase of reconnection. Fast reconnection brings an extra dissipation of magnetic field which enhances the reconnection rate in an apparent way. The energy spectrum in the CS shows the power-law pattern and the dynamics of plasmoids governs the associated spectral index. We noticed that the energy dissipation occurs at a scale $l_{ko}$ of 100-200~km, and the associated CS thickness ranges from 1500 to 2500~km, which follows the Taylor scale $l_T=l_{ko} S^{1/6}$. The termination shock(TS) appears in the turbulent region above flare loops, which is an important contributor to heating flare loops. Substantial magnetic energy is converted into both kinetic and thermal energies via TS, and the cumulative heating rate is greater than the rate of the kinetic energy transfer. In addition, the turbulence is somehow amplified by TS, of which the amplitude is related to the local geometry of the TS.

A model of double coronal hard X-ray sources in solar flares

A number of double coronal X-ray sources have been observed during solar flares by RHESSI, where the two sources reside at different sides of the inferred reconnection site. However, where and how are these X-ray-emitting electrons accelerated remains unclear. Here we present the first model of the double coronal hard X-ray (HXR) sources, where electrons are accelerated by a pair of termination shocks driven by bi-directional fast reconnection outflows. We model the acceleration and transport of electrons in the flare region by numerically solving the Parker transport equation using velocity and magnetic fields from the macroscopic magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a flux rope eruption. We show that electrons can be efficiently accelerated by the termination shocks and high-energy electrons mainly concentrate around the two shocks. The synthetic HXR emission images display two distinct sources extending to $>$100 keV below and above the reconnection region, with the upper source much fainter than the lower one. The HXR energy spectra of the two coronal sources show similar spectral slopes, consistent with the observations. Our simulation results suggest that the flare termination shock can be a promising particle acceleration mechanism in explaining the double-source nonthermal emissions in solar flares.

Symmetry potentials and in-medium nucleon-nucleon cross sections within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in relativistic impulse approximation

In the relativistic impulse approximation (RIA), we study symmetry potentials and in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) cross sections with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model that features chiral symmetry. The chiral symmetry that plays a fundamental role in the nonperturbative physics in the strong interaction is anticipated to add restrictive effects on the symmetry potentials and in-medium NN cross sections. For comparison, we also perform the study with the usual relativistic mean-field (RMF) model. The numerical results with the NJL and RMF models are similar at saturation density and below, since a priori fit was made to saturation properties. With the increase of nuclear density, the chiral symmetry starts to be restored partially in the NJL model, resulting in the explicit fall of the scalar density. In a large energy span, the symmetry potential acquires a significant rise for the partial restoration of the chiral symmetry, compared to the one with the RMF model. It is found that the in-medium NN cross sections in the RIA with the NJL and RMF models both increase with the density in the energy region interested in this study, whereas those with the NJL model increase sharply as long as a clear chiral symmetry restoration takes place. The different tendency of observables in density can be transmitted to the different energy dependence in the RIA. The NJL model is shown to have characteristic energy-dependent symmetry potentials and NN cross sections beyond saturation point, apart from the RMF models.

A software decoder implementation for H.266/VVC video coding standard

Versatile Video Coding Standard (H.266/VVC) was completed by Joint Video Expert Team (JVET) of ITU-T and ISO/IEC, in July 2020. This new ITU recommendation/international standard is a successor to the well-known H.265/HEVC video coding standard with roughly doubled compression efficiency, but also at the cost of an increased computational complexity. The complexity of H.266/VVC decoder processing modules is studied in this paper. An optimized decoder implementation using SIMD instruction extensions and additional parallel processing including data and task level parallelism is presented, which can achieve real-time decoding of 4K 60fps VVC bitstreams on an x86 based CPU.

A numerical study of heat source reconstruction for the advection-diffusion operator: A conjugate gradient method stabilized with SVD

In order to better understand micromechanical phenomena such as viscoelasticity and plasticity, the thermomechanical viewpoint is of prime importance but requires calorimetric measurements to be performed during a deformation process. Infrared imaging is commonly used to this aim but does not provide direct access to the intrinsic volumetric Thermomechanical Heat Sources (THS). An inversemethod is needed to convert temperature fields in the former quantity. The one proposed here relies on adiffusion-advection heat transfer model. Advection is generally not considered in such problems but due to plastic instabilities, a heterogeneous and non-negligible velocity field can play a role in the local heat transfer balance. Discretization of the governing equation is made through appropriate spectral approach. Spatial regularization is then achieved through regular modal truncation. The objective of the inversion process lies in a proper identification of the decomposition coefficients (states) which minimize the residuals. When a Conjugate Gradient Method (CGM) is applied to this nonlinear least square optimization, the use of Karhunen-Loeve Decomposition (KLD) or Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) on gradient vectors is shown to produce very good temporal regularization. Two test-cases were explored for noisy data which show that this algorithm performs very well when compared to the Tikhonov penalized conjugate gradient method.
