Human-imperceptible, Machine-recognizable Images

Massive human-related data is collected to train neural networks for computer vision tasks. A major conflict is exposed relating to software engineers between better developing AI systems and distancing from the sensitive training data. To reconcile this conflict, this paper proposes an efficient privacy-preserving learning paradigm, where images are first encrypted to become ``human-imperceptible, machine-recognizable'' via one of the two encryption strategies: (1) random shuffling to a set of equally-sized patches and (2) mixing-up sub-patches of the images. Then, minimal adaptations are made to vision transformer to enable it to learn on the encrypted images for vision tasks, including image classification and object detection. Extensive experiments on ImageNet and COCO show that the proposed paradigm achieves comparable accuracy with the competitive methods. Decrypting the encrypted images requires solving an NP-hard jigsaw puzzle or an ill-posed inverse problem, which is empirically shown intractable to be recovered by various attackers, including the powerful vision transformer-based attacker. We thus show that the proposed paradigm can ensure the encrypted images have become human-imperceptible while preserving machine-recognizable information. Grounded Affordance from Exocentric View

Affordance grounding aims to locate objects' "action possibilities" regions, which is an essential step toward embodied intelligence. Due to the diversity of interactive affordance, the uniqueness of different individuals leads to diverse interactions, which makes it difficult to establish an explicit link between object parts and affordance labels. Human has the ability that transforms the various exocentric interactions into invariant egocentric affordance to counter the impact of interactive diversity. To empower an agent with such ability, this paper proposes a task of affordance grounding from exocentric view, i.e., given exocentric human-object interaction and egocentric object images, learning the affordance knowledge of the object and transferring it to the egocentric image using only the affordance label as supervision. However, there is some "interaction bias" between personas, mainly regarding different regions and different views. To this end, we devise a cross-view affordance knowledge transfer framework that extracts affordance-specific features from exocentric interactions and transfers them to the egocentric view. Specifically, the perception of affordance regions is enhanced by preserving affordance co-relations. In addition, an affordance grounding dataset named AGD20K is constructed by collecting and labeling over 20K images from $36$ affordance categories. Experimental results demonstrate that our method outperforms the representative models regarding objective metrics and visual quality. Code is released at https://github.com/lhc1224/Cross-view-affordance-grounding.

Generation of multipartite entangled states based on double-longitudinal-mode cavity optomechanial system

Optomechanical system is a promising platform to connect different notes of quantum networks, therefore, entanglement generated from it is also of great importance. In this paper, the parameter dependence of optomechanical and optical-optical entanglements generated from the double-longitudinal-mode cavity optomechanical system are discussed and two quadrapartite entanglement generation schemes based on such a system are proposed. Furthermore, 2N or 4N-partite entangled states can be obtained by coupling N cavities with N-1 beamsplitter(BS)s, and these schemes are scalable in increasing the partite number of entanglement. Certain ladder or linear structures are contained in the finally obtained entanglement structure, which can be applied in quantum computing or quantum networks in the future.

OSP2B: One-Stage Point-to-Box Network for 3D Siamese Tracking

Two-stage point-to-box network acts as a critical role in the recent popular 3D Siamese tracking paradigm, which first generates proposals and then predicts corresponding proposal-wise scores. However, such a network suffers from tedious hyper-parameter tuning and task misalignment, limiting the tracking performance. Towards these concerns, we propose a simple yet effective one-stage point-to-box network for point cloud-based 3D single object tracking. It synchronizes 3D proposal generation and center-ness score prediction by a parallel predictor without tedious hyper-parameters. To guide a task-aligned score ranking of proposals, a center-aware focal loss is proposed to supervise the training of the center-ness branch, which enhances the network's discriminative ability to distinguish proposals of different quality. Besides, we design a binary target classifier to identify target-relevant points. By integrating the derived classification scores with the center-ness scores, the resulting network can effectively suppress interference proposals and further mitigate task misalignment. Finally, we present a novel one-stage Siamese tracker OSP2B equipped with the designed network. Extensive experiments on challenging benchmarks including KITTI and Waymo SOT Dataset show that our OSP2B achieves leading performance with a considerable real-time speed.Code will be available at https://github.com/haooozi/OSP2B.

An Empirical Study of Remote Sensing Pretraining

Deep learning has largely reshaped remote sensing (RS) research for aerial image understanding and made a great success. Nevertheless, most of the existing deep models are initialized with the ImageNet pretrained weights. Since natural images inevitably present a large domain gap relative to aerial images, probably limiting the finetuning performance on downstream aerial scene tasks. This issue motivates us to conduct an empirical study of remote sensing pretraining (RSP) on aerial images. To this end, we train different networks from scratch with the help of the largest RS scene recognition dataset up to now -- MillionAID, to obtain a series of RS pretrained backbones, including both convolutional neural networks (CNN) and vision transformers such as Swin and ViTAE, which have shown promising performance on computer vision tasks. Then, we investigate the impact of RSP on representative downstream tasks including scene recognition, semantic segmentation, object detection, and change detection using these CNN and vision transformer backbones. Empirical study shows that RSP can help deliver distinctive performances in scene recognition tasks and in perceiving RS related semantics such as "Bridge" and "Airplane". We also find that, although RSP mitigates the data discrepancies of traditional ImageNet pretraining on RS images, it may still suffer from task discrepancies, where downstream tasks require different representations from scene recognition tasks. These findings call for further research efforts on both large-scale pretraining datasets and effective pretraining methods. The codes and pretrained models will be released at https://github.com/ViTAE-Transformer/ViTAE-Transformer-Remote-Sensing.

Scalable Mask Annotation for Video Text Spotting

Video text spotting refers to localizing, recognizing, and tracking textual elements such as captions, logos, license plates, signs, and other forms of text within consecutive video frames. However, current datasets available for this task rely on quadrilateral ground truth annotations, which may result in including excessive background content and inaccurate text boundaries. Furthermore, methods trained on these datasets often produce prediction results in the form of quadrilateral boxes, which limits their ability to handle complex scenarios such as dense or curved text. To address these issues, we propose a scalable mask annotation pipeline called SAMText for video text spotting. SAMText leverages the SAM model to generate mask annotations for scene text images or video frames at scale. Using SAMText, we have created a large-scale dataset, SAMText-9M, that contains over 2,400 video clips sourced from existing datasets and over 9 million mask annotations. We have also conducted a thorough statistical analysis of the generated masks and their quality, identifying several research topics that could be further explored based on this dataset. The code and dataset will be released at \url{https://github.com/ViTAE-Transformer/SAMText}.

Room-temperature van der Waals 2D ferromagnet switching by spin-orbit torques

Emerging wide varieties of the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets with atomically thin and smooth interfaces holds great promise for next-generation spintronic devices. However, due to the lower Curie temperature of the vdW 2D ferromagnets than room temperature, electrically manipulating its magnetization at room temperature has not been realized. In this work, we demonstrate the perpendicular magnetization of 2D vdW ferromagnet Fe3GaTe2 can be effectively switched at room temperature in Fe3GaTe2/Pt bilayer by spin-orbit torques (SOTs) with a relatively low current density of 1.3 10^7A/cm2. Moreover, the high SOT efficiency of ξ_{DL}~0.22 is quantitatively determined by harmonic measurements, which is higher than those in Pt-based heavy metal/conventional ferromagnet devices. Our findings of room-temperature vdW 2D ferromagnet switching by SOTs provide a significant basis for the development of vdW-ferromagnet-based spintronic applications.

MPMQA: Multimodal Question Answering on Product Manuals

Visual contents, such as illustrations and images, play a big role in product manual understanding. Existing Product Manual Question Answering (PMQA) datasets tend to ignore visual contents and only retain textual parts. In this work, to emphasize the importance of multimodal contents, we propose a Multimodal Product Manual Question Answering (MPMQA) task. For each question, MPMQA requires the model not only to process multimodal contents but also to provide multimodal answers. To support MPMQA, a large-scale dataset PM209 is constructed with human annotations, which contains 209 product manuals from 27 well-known consumer electronic brands. Human annotations include 6 types of semantic regions for manual contents and 22,021 pairs of question and answer. Especially, each answer consists of a textual sentence and related visual regions from manuals. Taking into account the length of product manuals and the fact that a question is always related to a small number of pages, MPMQA can be naturally split into two subtasks: retrieving most related pages and then generating multimodal answers. We further propose a unified model that can perform these two subtasks all together and achieve comparable performance with multiple task-specific models. The PM209 dataset is available at https://github.com/AIM3-RUC/MPMQA.

DCN-T: Dual Context Network with Transformer for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification is challenging due to spatial variability caused by complex imaging conditions. Prior methods suffer from limited representation ability, as they train specially designed networks from scratch on limited annotated data. We propose a tri-spectral image generation pipeline that transforms HSI into high-quality tri-spectral images, enabling the use of off-the-shelf ImageNet pretrained backbone networks for feature extraction. Motivated by the observation that there are many homogeneous areas with distinguished semantic and geometric properties in HSIs, which can be used to extract useful contexts, we propose an end-to-end segmentation network named DCN-T. It adopts transformers to effectively encode regional adaptation and global aggregation spatial contexts within and between the homogeneous areas discovered by similarity-based clustering. To fully exploit the rich spectrums of the HSI, we adopt an ensemble approach where all segmentation results of the tri-spectral images are integrated into the final prediction through a voting scheme. Extensive experiments on three public benchmarks show that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods for HSI classification.

Joint Spatio-Temporal Modeling for the Semantic Change Detection in Remote Sensing Images

Semantic Change Detection (SCD) refers to the task of simultaneously extracting the changed areas and the semantic categories (before and after the changes) in Remote Sensing Images (RSIs). This is more meaningful than Binary Change Detection (BCD) since it enables detailed change analysis in the observed areas. Previous works established triple-branch Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures as the paradigm for SCD. However, it remains challenging to exploit semantic information with a limited amount of change samples. In this work, we investigate to jointly consider the spatio-temporal dependencies to improve the accuracy of SCD. First, we propose a Semantic Change Transformer (SCanFormer) to explicitly model the 'from-to' semantic transitions between the bi-temporal RSIs. Then, we introduce a semantic learning scheme to leverage the spatio-temporal constraints, which are coherent to the SCD task, to guide the learning of semantic changes. The resulting network (SCanNet) significantly outperforms the baseline method in terms of both detection of critical semantic changes and semantic consistency in the obtained bi-temporal results. It achieves the SOTA accuracy on two benchmark datasets for the SCD.

Rethinking Portrait Matting with Privacy Preserving

Recently, there has been an increasing concern about the privacy issue raised by identifiable information in machine learning. However, previous portrait matting methods were all based on identifiable images. To fill the gap, we present P3M-10k, which is the first large-scale anonymized benchmark for Privacy-Preserving Portrait Matting (P3M). P3M-10k consists of 10,421 high resolution face-blurred portrait images along with high-quality alpha mattes, which enables us to systematically evaluate both trimap-free and trimap-based matting methods and obtain some useful findings about model generalization ability under the privacy preserving training (PPT) setting. We also present a unified matting model dubbed P3M-Net that is compatible with both CNN and transformer backbones. To further mitigate the cross-domain performance gap issue under the PPT setting, we devise a simple yet effective Copy and Paste strategy (P3M-CP), which borrows facial information from public celebrity images and directs the network to reacquire the face context at both data and feature level. Extensive experiments on P3M-10k and public benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of P3M-Net over state-of-the-art methods and the effectiveness of P3M-CP in improving the cross-domain generalization ability, implying a great significance of P3M for future research and real-world applications.

Cold-Start based Multi-Scenario Ranking Model for Click-Through Rate Prediction

Online travel platforms (OTPs), e.g., Ctrip.com or Fliggy.com, can effectively provide travel-related products or services to users. In this paper, we focus on the multi-scenario click-through rate (CTR) prediction, i.e., training a unified model to serve all scenarios. Existing multi-scenario based CTR methods struggle in the context of OTP setting due to the ignorance of the cold-start users who have very limited data. To fill this gap, we propose a novel method named Cold-Start based Multi-scenario Network (CSMN). Specifically, it consists of two basic components including: 1) User Interest Projection Network (UIPN), which firstly purifies users' behaviors by eliminating the scenario-irrelevant information in behaviors with respect to the visiting scenario, followed by obtaining users' scenario-specific interests by summarizing the purified behaviors with respect to the target item via an attention mechanism; and 2) User Representation Memory Network (URMN), which benefits cold-start users from users with rich behaviors through a memory read and write mechanism. CSMN seamlessly integrates both components in an end-to-end learning framework. Extensive experiments on real-world offline dataset and online A/B test demonstrate the superiority of CSMN over state-of-the-art methods.

Electronic properties of 2{\it H}-stacking bilayer MoS$_2$ measured by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

Bilayer (BL) molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) is one of the most important electronic structures not only in valleytronics but also in realizing twistronic systems on the basis of the topological mosaics in Moiré superlattices. In this work, BL MoS$_2$ on sapphire substrate with 2$H$-stacking structure is fabricated. We apply the terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) for examining the basic optoelectronic properties of this kind of BL MoS$_2$. The optical conductivity of BL MoS$_2$ is obtained in temperature regime from 80 to 280 K. Through fitting the experimental data with the theoretical formula, the key sample parameters of BL MoS$_2$ can be determined, such as the electron density, the electronic relaxation time and the electronic localization factor. The temperature dependence of these parameters is examined and analyzed. We find that, similar to monolayer (ML) MoS$_2$, BL MoS$_2$ with 2$H$-stacking can respond strongly to THz radiation field and show semiconductor-like optoelectronic features. The theoretical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) can help us to further understand why the THz optoelectronic properties of BL MoS$_2$ differ from those observed for ML MoS$_2$. The results obtained from this study indicate that the THz TDS can be applied suitably to study the optoelectronic properties of BL MoS$_2$ based twistronic systems for novel applications as optical and optoelectronic materials and devices.

UVA: Towards Unified Volumetric Avatar for View Synthesis, Pose rendering, Geometry and Texture Editing

Neural radiance field (NeRF) has become a popular 3D representation method for human avatar reconstruction due to its high-quality rendering capabilities, e.g., regarding novel views and poses. However, previous methods for editing the geometry and appearance of the avatar only allow for global editing through body shape parameters and 2D texture maps. In this paper, we propose a new approach named \textbf{U}nified \textbf{V}olumetric \textbf{A}vatar (\textbf{UVA}) that enables local and independent editing of both geometry and texture, while retaining the ability to render novel views and poses. UVA transforms each observation point to a canonical space using a skinning motion field and represents geometry and texture in separate neural fields. Each field is composed of a set of structured latent codes that are attached to anchor nodes on a deformable mesh in canonical space and diffused into the entire space via interpolation, allowing for local editing. To address spatial ambiguity in code interpolation, we use a local signed height indicator. We also replace the view-dependent radiance color with a pose-dependent shading factor to better represent surface illumination in different poses. Experiments on multiple human avatars demonstrate that our UVA achieves competitive results in novel view synthesis and novel pose rendering while enabling local and independent editing of geometry and appearance. The source code will be released.

RESDSQL: Decoupling Schema Linking and Skeleton Parsing for Text-to-SQL

One of the recent best attempts at Text-to-SQL is the pre-trained language model. Due to the structural property of the SQL queries, the seq2seq model takes the responsibility of parsing both the schema items (i.e., tables and columns) and the skeleton (i.e., SQL keywords). Such coupled targets increase the difficulty of parsing the correct SQL queries especially when they involve many schema items and logic operators. This paper proposes a ranking-enhanced encoding and skeleton-aware decoding framework to decouple the schema linking and the skeleton parsing. Specifically, for a seq2seq encoder-decode model, its encoder is injected by the most relevant schema items instead of the whole unordered ones, which could alleviate the schema linking effort during SQL parsing, and its decoder first generates the skeleton and then the actual SQL query, which could implicitly constrain the SQL parsing. We evaluate our proposed framework on Spider and its three robustness variants: Spider-DK, Spider-Syn, and Spider-Realistic. The experimental results show that our framework delivers promising performance and robustness. Our code is available at https://github.com/RUCKBReasoning/RESDSQL.

Deep Image Matting: A Comprehensive Survey

Image matting refers to extracting precise alpha matte from natural images, and it plays a critical role in various downstream applications, such as image editing. Despite being an ill-posed problem, traditional methods have been trying to solve it for decades. The emergence of deep learning has revolutionized the field of image matting and given birth to multiple new techniques, including automatic, interactive, and referring image matting. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent advancements in image matting in the era of deep learning. We focus on two fundamental sub-tasks: auxiliary input-based image matting, which involves user-defined input to predict the alpha matte, and automatic image matting, which generates results without any manual intervention. We systematically review the existing methods for these two tasks according to their task settings and network structures and provide a summary of their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, we introduce the commonly used image matting datasets and evaluate the performance of representative matting methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. Finally, we discuss relevant applications of image matting and highlight existing challenges and potential opportunities for future research. We also maintain a public repository to track the rapid development of deep image matting at https://github.com/JizhiziLi/matting-survey.

Explicit Boundary Guided Semi-Push-Pull Contrastive Learning for Supervised Anomaly Detection

Most anomaly detection (AD) models are learned using only normal samples in an unsupervised way, which may result in ambiguous decision boundary and insufficient discriminability. In fact, a few anomaly samples are often available in real-world applications, the valuable knowledge of known anomalies should also be effectively exploited. However, utilizing a few known anomalies during training may cause another issue that the model may be biased by those known anomalies and fail to generalize to unseen anomalies. In this paper, we tackle supervised anomaly detection, i.e., we learn AD models using a few available anomalies with the objective to detect both the seen and unseen anomalies. We propose a novel explicit boundary guided semi-push-pull contrastive learning mechanism, which can enhance model's discriminability while mitigating the bias issue. Our approach is based on two core designs: First, we find an explicit and compact separating boundary as the guidance for further feature learning. As the boundary only relies on the normal feature distribution, the bias problem caused by a few known anomalies can be alleviated. Second, a boundary guided semi-push-pull loss is developed to only pull the normal features together while pushing the abnormal features apart from the separating boundary beyond a certain margin region. In this way, our model can form a more explicit and discriminative decision boundary to distinguish known and also unseen anomalies from normal samples more effectively. Code will be available at https://github.com/xcyao00/BGAD.

Hierarchically Fusing Long and Short-Term User Interests for Click-Through Rate Prediction in Product Search

Estimating Click-Through Rate (CTR) is a vital yet challenging task in personalized product search. However, existing CTR methods still struggle in the product search settings due to the following three challenges including how to more effectively extract users' short-term interests with respect to multiple aspects, how to extract and fuse users' long-term interest with short-term interests, how to address the entangling characteristic of long and short-term interests. To resolve these challenges, in this paper, we propose a new approach named Hierarchical Interests Fusing Network (HIFN), which consists of four basic modules namely Short-term Interests Extractor (SIE), Long-term Interests Extractor (LIE), Interests Fusion Module (IFM) and Interests Disentanglement Module (IDM). Specifically, SIE is proposed to extract user's short-term interests by integrating three fundamental interests encoders within it namely query-dependent, target-dependent and causal-dependent interest encoder, respectively, followed by delivering the resultant representation to the module LIE, where it can effectively capture user long-term interests by devising an attention mechanism with respect to the short-term interests from SIE module. In IFM, the achieved long and short-term interests are further fused in an adaptive manner, followed by concatenating it with original raw context features for the final prediction result. Last but not least, considering the entangling characteristic of long and short-term interests, IDM further devises a self-supervised framework to disentangle long and short-term interests. Extensive offline and online evaluations on a real-world e-commerce platform demonstrate the superiority of HIFN over state-of-the-art methods.
