Experimental generation of genuine four-partite entangled states with total three-party correlation for continuous variables

We experimentally prepare a new type of continuous variable genuine four-partite entangled states, the quantum correlation property of which is different from that of the four-mode GHZ and cluster states, and which has not any qubit counterpart to be proposed at present. In the criterion inequalities for the full inseparability of the genuine four-partite entangled states, the amplitude and phase quadrature correlation variances totally consisting of three-party combination from the four entangled modes are involved. The measured correlation variances among the quadratures of the prepared entangled states satisfy the sufficient requirements for the full inseparability. The type of entangled states has especially potential application in quantum information with continuous quantum variables.

Continuous-Variable Telecloning with Phase-Conjugate Inputs

We propose a scheme for continuous-variable telecloning with phase-conjugate inputs (PCI). Two cases of PCI telecloning are considered. The first case is where PCI telecloning produces $M$ clones nonlocally and $M$ anticlones locally, or vice versa. This kind of PCI telecloning requires only one EPR (Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen) entangled, two-mode squeezed state as a resource for building the appropriate multi-mode, multipartite entangled state via linear optics. The other case is a PCI telecloning protocol in which both clones and anticlones are created nonlocally. Such a scheme requires two EPR entangled states for the generation of a suitable multipartite entangled state. As our schemes are reversible, optimal cloning fidelities are achieved in the limit of infinite squeezing.

Affine Algebraic Varieties

In this paper, we give new criteria for affineness of a variety defined over $\Bbb{C}$. Our main result is that an irreducible algebraic variety $Y$ (may be singular) of dimension $d$ ($d\geq 1$) defined over $\Bbb{C}$ is an affine variety if and only if $Y$ contains no complete curves, $H^i(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)=0$ for all $i>0$ and the boundary $X-Y$ is support of a big divisor, where $X$ is a projective variety containing $Y$. We construct three examples to show that a variety is not affine if it only satisfies two conditions among these three conditions. We also give examples to demonstrate the difference between the behavior of the boundary divisor $D$ and the affineness of $Y$. If $Y$ is an affine variety, then the ring $Γ(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)$ is noetherian. However, to prove that $Y$ is an affine variety, we do not start from this ring. We explain why we do not need to check the noetherian property of the ring $Γ(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)$ directly but use the techniques of sheaf and cohomology.

Algebraic Stein Varieties

It is well-known that the associated analytic space of an affine variety defined over $\mathbb{C}$ is Stein but the converse is not true, that is, an algebraic Stein variety is not necessarily affine. In this paper, we give sufficient and necessary conditions for an algebraic Stein variety to be affine. One of our results is that an irreducible quasi-projective variety $Y$ defined over $\mathbb{C}$ with dimension $d$ ($d\geq 1$) is affine if and only if $Y$ is Stein, $H^i(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)=0$ for all $i>0$ and $κ(D, X)= d$ (i.e., $D$ is a big divisor), where $X$ is a projective variety containing $Y$ and $D$ is an effective divisor with support $X-Y$. If $Y$ is algebraic Stein but not affine, we also discuss the possible transcendental degree of the nonconstant regular functions on $Y$. We prove that $Y$ cannot have $d-1$ algebraically independent nonconstant regular functions. The interesting phenomenon is that the transcendental degree can be even if the dimension of $Y$ is even and the degree can be odd if the dimension of $Y$ is odd.

Nonlocal Nondegenerate Optical Parametric Amplifier Based on Genuine Multipartite Entanglement

We propose a new scheme for realizing nonlocal nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier by means of genuine four-mode entanglement. The nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier is regarded as a unitary transformation from two input fields to two outputs. Two inputs and two outputs are located at the remote stations respectively. Employing off-line four-mode entanglement, homodyne detection, classical communication and local displacement, the nonlocal nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier can be achieved. This scheme can be implemented with a setup that is experimentally accessible at present.

Energy Optimal Control for Quantum System Evolving on SU(1,1)

This paper discusses the energy optimal control problem for the class of quantum systems that possess dynamical symmetry of SU(1,1), which are widely studied in various physical problems in the quantum theory. Based on the maximum principle on Lie group, the complete set of optimal controls are analytically obtained, including both normal and abnormal extremals. The results indicate that the normal extremal controls can be expressed by the Weierstrass elliptic function, while the abnormal extremal controls can only be constant functions of time t.

Controllability of Quantum Systems on the Lie Group SU(1,1)

This paper examines the controllability for quantum control systems with SU(1,1) dynamical symmetry, namely, the ability to use some electromagnetic field to redirect the quantum system toward a desired evolution. The problem is formalized as the control of a right invariant bilinear system evolving on the Lie group SU(1,1) of two dimensional special pseudo-unitary matrices. It is proved that the elliptic condition of the total Hamiltonian is both sufficient and necessary for the controllability. Conditions are also given for small time local controllability and strong controllability. The results obtained are also valid for the control systems on the Lie groups SO(2,1) and SL(2,R).

Asymptotically noise decoupling for Markovian open quantum systems

The noise decoupling problem is investigated for general N-level Markovian open quantum systems. Firstly, the concept of Cartan decomposition of the Lie algebra $su(N)$ is introduced as a tool of designing control Hamiltonians. Next, under certain assumptions, it is shown that a part of variables of the coherence vector of the system density matrix can be asymptotically decoupled from the environmental noises. The resulting noise decoupling scheme is applied to one-qubit, qutrit and two-qubit quantum systems, by which the coherence evolution of the one-qubit and qutrit systems can always be asymptotically preserved, while, for two-qubit systems, our findings indicate that evolution of some variables can be preserved only for some initial states.

Expansion of an ultra-cold lithium gas in the BEC-BCS crossover

We present an experimental study of the time of flight properties of a gas of ultra-cold fermions in the BEC-BCS crossover. Since interactions can be tuned by changing the value of the magnetic field, we are able to probe both non interacting and strongly interacting behaviors. These measurements allow us to characterize the momentum distribution of the system as well as its equation of state. We also demonstrate the breakdown of superfluid hydrodynamics in the weakly attractive region of the phase diagram, probably caused by pair breaking taking place during the expansion.

Continuous-Variable Quantum Cloning of Coherent states with Phase-Conjugate Input Modes Using Linear Optics

We propose a scheme for continuous-variable quantum cloning of coherent states with phase-conjugate input modes using linear optics. The quantum cloning machine yields $M$ identical optimal clones from $N$ replicas of a coherent state and $N$ its replicas of phase conjugate. This scheme can be straightforwardly implemented with the setup accessible at present since its optical implementation only employs simple linear optical elements and homodyne detection. Compared with the original scheme for continuous variables quantum cloning with phase-conjugate input modes proposed by Cerf and Iblisdir [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 247903 (2001)], which utilized a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier, our scheme loses the output of phase-conjugate clones and is regarded as irreversible quantum cloning.

Hodge Cohomology Criteria For Affine Varieties

We give several new criteria for a quasi-projective variety to be affine. In particular, we prove that an algebraic manifold $Y$ with dimension $n$ is affine if and only if $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and $κ(D, X)=n$, i.e., there are $n$ algebraically independent nonconstant regular functions on $Y$, where $X$ is the smooth completion of $Y$, $D$ is the effective boundary divisor with support $X-Y$ and $Ω^j_Y$ is the sheaf of regular $j$-forms on $Y$. This proves Mohan Kumar's affineness conjecture for algebraic manifolds and gives a partial answer to J.-P. Serre's Steinness question \cite{36} in algebraic case since the associated analytic space of an affine variety is Stein [15, Chapter VI, Proposition 3.1].

On the $D$-dimension of a certain type of threefolds

Let $Y$ be an algebraic manifold of dimension 3 with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and $h^0(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y) > 1$. Let $X$ be a smooth completion of $Y$ such that the boundary $X-Y$ is the support of an effective divisor $D$ on $X$ with simple normal crossings. We prove that the $D$-dimension of $X$ cannot be 2, i.e., either any two nonconstant regular functions are algebraically dependent or there are three algebraically independent nonconstant regular functions on $Y$. Secondly, if the $D$-dimension of $X$ is greater than 1, then the associated scheme of $Y$ is isomorphic to Spec$Γ(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)$. Furthermore, we prove that an algebraic manifold $Y$ of any dimension $d\geq 1$ is affine if and only if $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and it is regularly separable, i.e., for any two distinct points $y_1$, $y_2$ on $Y$, there is a regular function $f$ on $Y$ such that $f(y_1)\neq f(y_2)$.

On threefolds without nonconstant regular functions

We consider smooth threefolds $Y$ defined over $\Bbb{C}$ with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$. Let $X$ be a smooth projective threefold containing $Y$ and $D$ be the boundary divisor with support $X-Y$. We are interested in the following question: What geometry information of $X$ can be obtained from the regular function information on $Y$? Suppose that the boundary $X-Y$ is a smooth projective surface. In this paper, we analyse two different cases, i.e., there are no nonconstant regular functions on $Y$ or there are lots of regular functions on $Y$. More precisely, if $H^0(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y)=\Bbb{C}$, we prove that ${1/2}(c_1^2+c_2)\cdot D=χ({\mathcal{O}}_D)\geq 0$. In particular, if the line bundle ${\mathcal{O}}_D(D)$ is not torsion, then $q=h^1(X, {\mathcal{O}}_X)=0$, ${1/2}(c_1^2+c_2)\cdot D=χ({\mathcal{O}}_D)=0$, $χ({\mathcal{O}}_X) >0$ and $K_X$ is not nef. If there is a positive constant $c$ such that $h^0(X, {\mathcal{O}}_X(nD))\geq c n^3$ for all sufficiently large $n$ (we say that $D$ is big or the $D$-dimension of $X$ is 3) and $D$ has no exceptional curves, then $|nD|$ is base point free for $n\gg 0$. Therefore $Y$ is affine if $D$ is big.

Experimental Preparation of Quadripartite Cluster and GHZ Entangled States for Continuous Variables

The cluster states and Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states are two different types of multipartite quantum entangled states. We present the first experimental results generating continuous variable quadripartite cluster and GHZ entangled states of electromagnetic fields. Utilizing four two-mode squeezed states of light and linearly optical transformations, the two types of entangled states for amplitude and phase quadratures of light are experimentally produced. The combinations of the measured quadrature variances prove the full inseparability of the generated four subsystems. The presented experimental schemes show that the multipartite entanglement of continuous variables can be deterministically generated with the relatively simple implementation.

Quasi multipartite entanglement measure based on quadratic functions

We develop a new entanglement measure by extending Jaeger's Minkowskian norm entanglement measure. This measure can be applied to a much wider class of multipartite mixed states, although still "quasi" in the sense that it is still incapable of dividing precisely the sets of all separable and entangled states. As a quadratic scalar function of the system density matrix, the quasi measure can be easily expressed in terms of the so-called coherence vector of the system density matrix, by which we show the basic properties of the quasi measure including (1) zero-entanglement for all separable states, (2) invariance under local unitary operations, and (3) non-increasing under local POVM (positive operator-valued measure) measurements. These results open up perspectives in further studies of dynamical problems in open systems, especially the dynamic evolution of entanglement, and the entanglement preservation against the environment-induced decoherence effects.

Continuous-Variable Quantum Information Distributor: Reversible Telecloning

We propose a scheme of continuous-variable reversible telecloning, which broadcast the information of an unknown state without loss from a sender to several spatially separated receivers exploiting multipartite entanglement as quantum channels. In this scheme, quantum information of an unknown state is distributed into $M$ optimal clones and $M-1$ anticlones using $2M$% -partite entanglement. For the perfect quantum information distribution that is optimal cloning, $2M$-partite entanglement is required to be a maximum two-party entanglement. Comparing with the quantum telecloning proposed by Loock and Braunstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 247901 (2001)], this protocol produces the anticlones (or time-reversed state) of the unknown quantum state, thus, keep all information of an unknown state.

Coherence Phenomena in the Phase-sensitive Optical Parametric Amplification inside a Cavity

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate coherence phenomena in optical parametric amplification inside a cavity. The mode splitting in transmission spectra of phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifier is observed. Especially, we show a very narrow dip and peak, which are the shape of $δ$ function, appear in the transmission profile. The origin of the coherence phenomenon in this system is the interference between the harmonic pump field and the subharmonic seed field in cooperation with dissipation of the cavity.

There Exist Nontrivial Threefolds with Vanishing Hodge Cohomology

We analyze the structure of the algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and $h^0(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y) > 1$, by showing the deformation invariant of some open surfaces. Secondly, we show when a smooth threefold with nonconstant regular functions satisfies the vanishing Hodge cohomology. As an application, we prove the existence of nonaffine and nonproduct threefolds $Y$ with this property by constructing a family of a certain type of open surfaces parametrized by the affine curve $\C-\{0\}$ such that the corresponding smooth completion $X$ has Kodaira dimension $-\infty$ and $D$-dimension 1, where $D$ is the effective boundary divisor with support $X-Y$.
